    Throwing in the Towel

I have had some second thoughts and fears. I am worried cause I have to pay out of pocket and what if I fail at this like I did other programs.. I also was watching some things on you tube on lapbands and there was a Dr.R something on there cutting down the lapband. Got me pretty scared... But then I sat here and thought more about it looked up some more research and am as ready as ever to do it I have 6 days of protein shakes to go... Holy poop.. It is coming fast and I can do it.. My family doc has a cheering section at his office for me.. It feels good.. Not many people have WLS up here in BC cause it mostly self pay except for the very few who are approved for the GBS... So anyways we can do this... I am here if you ever wanna talk..

got to have a sense of humor !

here is to 2021!!! I live in a very small town and I am not much on social media. I have kept my WLS on the down low, not because I am ashamed but because I am not looking for support or BS from anyone. My husband we into town today to the local cafe (gossip central) to pick up eggs that I forgot to get on my regular grocery run and the old gal who runs the place announced to the whole joint, during the morning coffee run, how sorry she was to hear about my illness. My husband said "she is feeling good but I will tell her your thinking of her" she carried on to ask him how many rounds I would need. He replied " I believe this will do it". The word is I am going though chemo, LOL. I am not telling them any different......let them talk. Chemo or weight loss surgery regardless, I am getting thin!!!! LOL

    Negative comments from family members

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I agree with others who suggested to work with a therapist or tell your family that the issue is closed, but I realize these are hard things to do and not always an option. Are your family members overweight? Sometimes people say these sorts of things out of jealousy or based on their own experiences. It doesn't make it okay, but at least you can know it's their BS and not about you. I personally eat sweets from time to time - I was told I didn't have to be 100% perfect, just keep my eating choices good 80-90% of the time. But that may not work for everyone. I do agree that celebrating with food probably isn't the best idea, but a treat on your birthday sounds pretty harmless as long as you can enjoy a reasonable portion and it doesn't become a binge. Good luck!

    May surgeries!

So my surgery was postponed to June 13th bc my scope showed a small ulcer. I'm still staying to cheer you all on and see how everyone is doing.

Did anyone here not need this (yet)?

I was like you - healthy but overweight for my 20s, 30s, and 40s, Then everything went to hell. HIgh blood pressure, bordering Blood Sugar readings, arthritis in my knees, neck and back, etc. Losing the weight via RNY has helped immensely with all of that. Since you are not having any issues right now you have to ask yourself another question: Have you ever been successful with weight loss and kept it off for any amount of time? Many here were great at losing weight but could not keep it off long term. Also, why are you having DS instead of RNY or VSG? That surgery isn't even offered by my surgeon's practice - a BC/BS Center of Excellence. If you are uncomfortable with that surgery, can you ask for one of the others?

Band Out, Sleeve In! It's done.

6-9 months for the sleeve or rny? or bc you did not go w/their recommendations?
  7. I think I have entered what my surgeon called “the tunnel of misery”. I bought so many different broths and soups so I’d have a variety, and the idea of ANY of them makes me nauseous. I also can just BARELY stand the thought of any of the shakes. And I desperately want all the food my husband is cooking for my family. I know I’ll get through it, and it’s worth it, I just needed to share with people who would get it. Also, I’m so sorry to the people who are getting canceled. From my perspective, I am terrified right now about developing complications that could send me back to the hospital in the midst of chaos. For example, I developed a little respiratory rattle in the hospital bc I can’t breathe deeply bc of the pain, and I’m so scared it will develop into pneumonia. Also I feel like while I’m healing my immune system is compromised, so I’m nervous about that too. I don’t mean to devalue the experience of getting your surgery postponed. I would have been devastated. But there are some pros to it. Now will someone help me get out of the Tunnel of Misery?
  8. Complain away! It's important to get those feelings OUT in the open and not let them eat away at your motivation! You mentioned BC pills and TOM. Another 2 factors that will affect you weight dramatically from day to day and week to week is your hormonal levels! So you've got lots going on "in the mix" right now! And of course the healing and recovery overlays everything else. Feel free to feel down for a moment when you're comparing yourself to others (hard not to, I know). Then let that pass and turn to the positives (and grab that drink container and drink to it!) Try Protein shakes.....they will help you deal with 2 challenges simultaneously....protein and fluids! The more protein you do now, the better for weight loss, muscle preservation, long-term preservation of your hair (hair loss sometimes doesn't make itself known for 3-4 months, and early protein helps prevent or at least reduce it!). And of course, I forgot to mention that you should be taking body measurements! If you didn't do this just before your surgery, start now! Often times the body is changing dramatically and the scale doesn't reflect these changes. And many of us can't see the changes when we look in the mirror! Measurements done on a regular basis (I plan on doing mine monthly....so another 2 weeks for me to compare to my starting numbers) will help you see your progress even when the scale is being stubborn. Good luck, and don't worry about venting. That's why we're here! Who better to understand how you feel, and to help you feel better?
  9. I've used the pill since I was 16. That'd be 15 years. I ran out right before surg (July30) and haven't gone back to the OB yet. But I'd like to be on something! I'm wondering what other types of BC y'all like and that work well, but are not pills?? Any suggestions? And if so, why and do you gain weight?
  10. Oh, HELL NO! If I ask my doctor a question about my healthcare, I expect an immediate and honest answer. My body, my right to know, my right to to be fully informed before I consent to any course of action and treatment. I have a 10 cc AP Lap Band. It was filled with 5 cc of saline at time of surgery. My first adjustment added an additional 1/2 cc for a total of 5 1/2 cc. Angi, you have every right to know precisely how much saline is in your band. That is a crucial piece of information that you need to know. It is your body, your band. If your doctor won't tell you, take control, grab your chart and read it. You can, you know. I've done it. Shocked the hell out of the doctor who thought that the sweet faced blonde girl in his exam room would just sit there and swallow his line of condescending BS. LOL Be an advocate for yourself. If you don't do it, who will?

    Coffee.. I need help :(

I know every doctor has his /her own protocol about what we WLS patients can/cannot have, but I have never seen/read/heard that coffee is on the "forbidden" list. Very interesting..... I have no words of wisdom or advice, bc I would be like you.... In a haze. I was in a haze and had headaches when I first gave up sugar and flour. Thank God that only lasted for two weeks. Maybe with time things will get better..... I sure hope so!

    Soft stops?

Foods that are not so good for you seem to get me stuck and slow me down. Now this is a catch 22. I talked to my NP at my surgeons office last week about this. I ate a turkey sausage patty in a biscuit. Not the BEST choice due to the biscuit, we both agreed. First bite. STUCK! pain pain pain. It took me 45 minutes to finish that biscuit and sausage and I wasn't hungry for 5 hours. So, when I make a better food choice, like a natural yogurt made from grass fed cows milk, etc. , I am hungry in 1 hour. So, do I seek out the foods that actually "clog" me so that I am not hungry for hours, or do I eat the healthier foods, and be starving for hours?

    Any December '08 Bandsters?

Hi all! I am still holding out hope for a Dec. Band! My paperwork was faxed off to BC/BS this past Tuesday and I am hoping for a quick approval. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

    Any December '08 Bandsters?

I can totally relate. I just got my surgery date today and it is December 1st! It seems like I've been waiting forever, and then when I got the call today, I was pretty shocked that it's only 16 days away! Luckily, my BC/BS is covering it and I'm going to Dr. Brient in Gainesville, FL. I'm nervous and scared as well!! Good luck!
  16. It's no ones business but I tell ppl and I am not ashamed but rather proud! I needed a little help! Working from home to the last 4yrs didn't help! I did FMLA for work BC I requested time off and they only gave me 2 days...the butt heads! They tried to ask me but I told them it's against Federal law for them to ask! We did it for us and our families! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Anyone not telling anyone about their surgery?

I was proud to tell my colleagues that I got sleeved and very happy about it when they call me to check on me they say congratulations We are all surgeons and it's okay bcs we know the surgery and we see patients doing it all the time Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. I've read on here it happens bc the nerves are not healed in your stomach yet. Search "no feeling of fullness" or something like that and the explanations should come up. I wish they covered this in classes before the surgery! Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App

    Waiting for Approval

Jeez, Louise!!!! I haven't been on this forum lately, as I'm going to be a March bandster. You've DEFINITELY been tested on this one! Maybe after all of this you can start doing presentations on how to deal with insurance companies! One positive thing to keep in mind is at least BC/BC covers this type of surgery. The insurance that I had with my previous employer not only did not cover lapband/gastric surgeries, they didn't even cover medically necessary breast reductions! Thank God that they know that these things are physically beneficial in the long run! I pray ya hear your good news today......SOON! Keep your chin up!

Would you do the Lap Band Surgery again?

Remember the Lap Band works differently in everyones body. Some people may not be able to tolerate it, afterall it is a foreign object! I haven't gotten the band yet but I sm in the process of it. I chose the band for several reasons, according to 3 different books I've read that explains each of the surgeries with pros and cons. The pros of the LB far outweigh the pros and conscof the other two types, gastric sleeve (gb) and the RNy ! Most of the people who get the band have no problems with it and when you learn how to work w/ it, it is very beneficial! Reasons I choose the LB over the others: 1) noone is messing w/ my organs! No cutting, stapling, reconnecting of the original design. 2) the LB is the least invasive and requires the least hospital stay time afterwards. 3) the % of weight regain is lower than that of the other 2 surgeries. With the other two, the belly can be stretched out after many years while the Band continues to provide restriction. 4) It is reversible (removable) if there are other complications that result: ie stomach cancer or something like that! 5) while the LB does require additional visits to the Dr for fills/unfills, the other two require a couple followups and it's done- now up to the patient. The rapid WEIGHTLOSS for these 2 are too quick, and most of the time require plastic/cosmetic surgery later. I'd rather be continually monitored by fills/unfills regularly than to be done after a couple followup appts. In addition, losing the weight more slowly allows for the skin to catch up and thus prevents "less of a chance" for skin removal surgery! Not alwYs but most of the time! 6) the LB is becoming more popular than the other 2 surgeries. The RNy is the most expensive, and most dangerous simply bc it is rearranging the order of how your food is designed to be digested (routing process). The LB is the 2nd most expensive but has longer term lasting effects. Ok so there may be 2 reasons in my #5 but hopefully u get it. Like I said, the L- band does work differently in everyones body , it may not be the right choice for that person! It really depends how u think u can succeed and w/ which surgery u think u would benefit most from. I have read 3 books so far and all are highly praising the Lap Band thus far! Hope it helps!

    Waiting for Approval

Good morning, I've had it! I called just got off the phone with BC/BS...they drive me nuts... spoke to the same girl from yesterday...yes! and on the first try..yes! So I thought it would be my lucky day....NOT! ok....so no denial...but no approval neither.. my record has just been pending there...just plain sitting...out there the frickin' frackin' f'ing supervisor has not forwarded back to RN for reviewal... The rep was even stunned....she can't believe....I told her I've had it...by law this must be decided today...it is DAY 30! She confirmed and is just as flabergasted...she emailed that frackin' supervisor requesting she contact me immediately.... I told her not good enough I want to speak to her now...I am getting my decision today... She couldn't give me her tel# she said. She transfd me to her..ofcourse rings twice straight to voicemail-ok...I think I'll leave a message..nope voicemail box is FULL....I stay on line because it says stay on line if you want to be handled now and the person taking over her calls will assist..it rings...NOT...it goes right back to her frackin' voicemail...and I do this over and over and over... I think ok....hit * get to the directory...choose to do name look up...I have her name...got two hits...they each say their names..I listened to her message so many times I definitely recognized her voice....it asks to verify I want first, last name at extn xxxx....yes I got her extention number...I let the system connect me and voila....I can all of a sudden leave a message!!! I will be sending a request contact to the georgia insurance commission today...and seeing about contacting an attorney...i've had it with these people!:pray2: oh...but I will call today every 2 hours...!
  23. It's funny that you say that bc I look now how I always looked growing up until I got pregnant at 19, then again at 20, but still was only about 40 pounds overweight until I had my son and dilated cardiomyopathy in 2009 and the swelled up like a balloon. I am not pregnant in that first picture but everyone thinks I am. It's great to look like me again.

    New and ANNOYED

I guess I'm confused. Why would you need an attorney to appeal? Seems like a waste of money. I would head to Mexico before I did that. That's what I'm doing. Not wasting another moment on the insurance BS!
