8 days post HELP ME PLEASE

Gatorade is recommended but I personally don't drink it because of the artificial ingredients and colouring. I buy EmergenC vitamin packets and mix it into my water with crystal light pure. If you are having loose stool I also recommend you add an electrolyte tablet into your water mix asap. I ordered the electrolyte tablet off of Amazon Nuun Active Hydrating Drink Tablets, Juice Box Mix, 4 count were the ones I got off Amazon

    7 Months Report

Love it! Your skin is glowing.
  3. I relocated across Australia 3 months ago, so I got my old dr to send a referal to a new dr here where I now live so I could get continued aftercare. My band has been loose for about a year, and there isn't much I can't eat. I very rarely get stuck. My band has felt looser and looser every month. Then about 3 weeks ago, it's like it 'disappeared'. I couldn't feel it at all. My appetite returned in full force and without restriction, I have been enjoying it a little too much . I gained 5 lbs in 3 weeks. So when I saw my new dr yesterday, I mentioned that I couldn't feel my band. He then decided to withdraw all the Fluid in my band, and found that I only have 6cc in it, when, according to my old dr's notes, I should have had 8.5cc in it. But because I still had fluid in it, I should still have some restriction, so he is concerned that I'm not feeling anything at all. He therefore suspects either I have a leak and have slowly lost any restriction I once had, or my band has eroded. He added another cc to my band, and lo and behold, I'm feeling something today. Only barely, mind you, but I can definitely feel my band again. So I'm hoping it means it's just a slow leak and not erosion after all. But either way, he's booked me for a gastroendoscopy next Tuesday so we can found out for sure what it is. So please, cross your fingers for me that it's not an erosion. P.S. In the meantime, I'm back on the wagon, exercising (which I'd already restarted recently) and now watching what I eat again. I intend to lose those 5lbs and maintain no matter what the outcome of the gastroendoscopy is. I have worked too damned hard to lose the weight to gain any of it back now. I've kept it off for 12 months with a loose band, I can do it now.
  4. congratulations! I am only 11 days post off and since surgery I've not taken any of my blood pressure medication or my diabetes medicine! That in itself makes this all worth it, though I look forward to loosing more weight have having all my joints feel better!

Would you do the Lap Band Surgery again?

Remember the Lap Band works differently in everyones body. Some people may not be able to tolerate it, afterall it is a foreign object! I haven't gotten the band yet but I sm in the process of it. I chose the band for several reasons, according to 3 different books I've read that explains each of the surgeries with pros and cons. The pros of the LB far outweigh the pros and conscof the other two types, gastric sleeve (gb) and the RNy ! Most of the people who get the band have no problems with it and when you learn how to work w/ it, it is very beneficial! Reasons I choose the LB over the others: 1) noone is messing w/ my organs! No cutting, stapling, reconnecting of the original design. 2) the LB is the least invasive and requires the least hospital stay time afterwards. 3) the % of weight regain is lower than that of the other 2 surgeries. With the other two, the belly can be stretched out after many years while the Band continues to provide restriction. 4) It is reversible (removable) if there are other complications that result: ie stomach cancer or something like that! 5) while the LB does require additional visits to the Dr for fills/unfills, the other two require a couple followups and it's done- now up to the patient. The rapid WEIGHTLOSS for these 2 are too quick, and most of the time require plastic/cosmetic surgery later. I'd rather be continually monitored by fills/unfills regularly than to be done after a couple followup appts. In addition, losing the weight more slowly allows for the skin to catch up and thus prevents "less of a chance" for skin removal surgery! Not alwYs but most of the time! 6) the LB is becoming more popular than the other 2 surgeries. The RNy is the most expensive, and most dangerous simply bc it is rearranging the order of how your food is designed to be digested (routing process). The LB is the 2nd most expensive but has longer term lasting effects. Ok so there may be 2 reasons in my #5 but hopefully u get it. Like I said, the L- band does work differently in everyones body , it may not be the right choice for that person! It really depends how u think u can succeed and w/ which surgery u think u would benefit most from. I have read 3 books so far and all are highly praising the Lap Band thus far! Hope it helps!

    Downers

A co-worker of mine, who prior to my surgery was all about helping me along. She was a successful bander who wanted to take me under her wing. Post-op she changed. Negitive nelly, if you will. She is 3 years post of and has lost 70 lbs. I have no idea what she weighs, she looks nice, not tiny but healthy. She ask me today how much I'd lost. I told her 50+ lbs in 9 months. Rather than saying good job she snickered. She ask how much more I wanted to lose, I said around 50. She plain out said I would never be able to do it with the band and I should have had gastric bypass. If I needed to loose 100 lbs then my doctor never should have done the band. She keeps telling me that I had more to loose than she did. I have never told her my numbers so how the hell does she know. I am sorry, but that is just a b#$%3 thing to say. While my weight loss has slowed, why is it impossible to lose all of my excess body weight? I don't know if I will get that small, but I would at least like to make to the 150's. If you are going to be negitive and discouraging keep it to yourself!

    Complications

You are not alone. I was sleeved 12/17/13 and from the minute I woke up I had sever nausea. This lasted for 6 weeks straight. I had to go to an infusion center 2 times for I.v. fluids due to sever dehydration. I tried 4 different anti nausea medications and 2 different antacids with out any success. Finally on the 6 week mark I was put on aciphex for my acid and started eating solid food. Up until this point I could not tolerate anything, even water. The only thing I could now stomach was ruffles potato chips with american cheese melted on top. Not ideal to say the least but it stayed in and gave me a little energy. After about 4 day of that concoction, I started eating other things and slowly came back to life. I still can not seem to get in enough water or protein I also wish I would have known nausea was a real side effect before having surgery however if I would have known how bad I was going to have it, I probably would have chickened out. The only bad thing is that, as soon as I started eating, I stopped loosing. I dropped 40lbs in that first 6 weeks. Since then I have lost 2 more pounds but that has been in the last couple days because I finally felt well enough to exercise. Having gone through it, here is what I recommend: Puke and ralley- drink water even if it come out to avoid dehydration and having to get fluids through an I.v. Eat what you think you can stomach even if it is carbs. At this point you need to recover any way you can. Make sure your acid is under control with medication. Hang in there, you are most definitely not alone but it does get better.

    Dealing with hair loss.

My PA also told me to try some GNC vitamins. I don't have the bottle right in front of me but it is something like Skin, Hair and Nails. They have a horrible smell, but she said that they work really well.
  11. Well, my 28W's are starting to get big. While they aren't falling down on their own yet, I realized last night when I took off my pants without thinking and didn't unbutton or unzip them (and they were loose when I took them off like that!), that I probably should find some smaller pants. So, today I found a couple of local thrift stores and found myself some 22W's that are still a bit small for me, some 24W's that I think will fit or will in a very short time and a pair of 26W's that I know will fit. I had a hard time finding the 26W's that's why I only got one pair of those. Some of the pants still had the original tags from the "name brand / big box store" on them. I got one pair that was originally $40 at JCPenny for $7.99 at the thrift store. While I was looking forward to buying the smaller sizes, I never really thought it would happen a month after surgery. Shirts are still fitting fine - somewhat baggy around my stomach, but I can tuck them in and they still look good. Best part is when I go to get rid of my too big clothing - one of these local thrift stores will take them as a donation and give me a receipt that I can use for tax purposes! Yay!
  12. Heidikate, I had my orientation first, they weighed me in , then they scheduled me for the dietician and the surgeon ( Dr. Hahn- he is awesome ). At that appointment he gave me a goal weight and said when I come within 5 lbs of that to call in and they would schedule me for my psychiatric appointment. Following the diet in the binder they gave me I lost the weight within a month and completed the psyc. And then had to wait for the last 5 lbs to come off before they would schedule me for the surgery . Then I had to do an ekg. All together it took two months from start to finish. My friend went to Kaiser SSF and got it done with within a month and half. She didn't need to loose weight but had to attend a lot of classes. Did the DR say you had to loose weight? Did you get the binder? Good luck to you !

  14. From what I understand, the muscle repair is standard operating procedure during a tummy tuck. They don't just remove skin - they repair the damage as well.

    oddly restricted

I've been banded since July 25th and haven't had a fill yet. I was pretty loose until about 2 weeks ago. I scheduled a fill three weeks ago for Sept. 29th (soonest with work that I could go). I've been under some stress and 2 weeks ago I had what I think was food poisoning. Stomach cramps, etc. I felt horrible and put myself on liquids for 3 days. Since then, I've been very restricted. I can eat about one fourth of a sandwhich and a couple of bites of fruit or a few carrots at one sitting. Before this, I was back to eating close to my pre-band amounts. Suddenly, I'm able to stop easily again when eating and I've stopped wanting to snack. I guess I will keep my fill appt. since I scheduled the time off and this happy place will probably evaporate by then. What do you all suggest?? Now, I notice that whenever I feel stress, I think I feel my band. I know it is probably in my head but it is freaking me out, lol. I'm continually surprised by how the band is IN charge, lol.

WHEN can I take a Bath?

I am with you Yoda, I have two weeks to go, and my skin is so dry, I need a soak with some bath oil bad! Lotions just don't cut it for me, I hate taking the time and having my hands feel slimy. Bath oil is so much better, and I have a new bath pillow too.
  17. New guy here, just found the website this week and I've been reading many threads. I contacted a gastric doctor two months ago and found out about two weeks ago that my insurance will cover 100% after a six month doctor supervised nutrition program. My first visit with the doctor is on April 6th to learn more. I've looked at many, many post op menu's and that scares me. I like to eat! and just recently fell in love with cooking on a Big Green Egg, so I'm still a little on the fence with all of this about not being able to enjoy life after, plus I like a glass of wine (or two) at night to unwind. My wife is not really on board with it as well, and has the typical skinny person thought - just eat less and exercise more. My primary doctor put it bluntly when I asked his opinion about weight loss surgery with a response of "nothing has worked for you in 47 years has it?" I've tried many weight loss programs and two things worked for me, Metabolic and a weight loss competition at the Gym. I lost 42 pounds with MRC and 26 with the gym both getting down to about 230-240, now at 315 later. The gym was hard aerobic exercise twice a day and weight training for an hour - I wish I had time to keep that schedule up - and I did lose fat and gain muscle but really felt let down after four months that my waist only went down three inches (currently squeezing into size 44 jeans) and could barely get into a 40. My neighbor had gastric by pass about ten years ago has gone from 330 to about 160, and is the only person I've know to have the surgery, and I would be ecstatic to be back to 160-180, as would my wife. Does everyone have lose skin post surgery? Do some have skin shrinkage or is skin surgery years down the road happen to everyone? My main motivation is to hopefully ensure that I live long enough to see my kids grow up. The thought of not being a part of my eight year old daughter's wedding (when ever that would be) really scares me. Anyways, just checking in to say hi and go back to reading. I'm sure I will have more questions soon! -Steve in Florida.
  18. People are people...they're gonna think weird crap about everything. As the song goes....you can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself. My loose skin is goofy. Yep, I look a little like melted cheese. LOL But I look dang good in clothes these days, and even a bathing suit...so that's pretty cool:) My hubby is all about thinner me...then again...he was all about fatter me, too...so that hasn't changed much. In new relationships, I can see where it could be awkward, but people are pretty understand really. Everyone has something, you know? Cleanliness is no issue. Just shower. And ultimately, if it bothers you....there's skin surgery somewhere down the road if you want it. It's kind of a nonissue for me. Others might feel different.
  19. I'm amazed at how some people have priorities that show their ignorance. Yes, you may turn into "the skinny one," but if you have a lot of weight to lose, it'll be a long time before you're THAT skinny, and even then, you'll have the side effects of weight loss to deal with (possible loose skin, and so forth.) It's not like you'll be instantly ready for a beauty contest. And of course, you'll still be the same person you always were, just in a nicer package. Some people! When I was in the hospital recovering from my surgery, they had an IV in me to make sure I was getting enough fluids. I was laying in my hospital bed like a beached whale, swollen up from the surgery (and two hernia repairs they did), and I could barely move. I was very sore. The IV had some issues, and at midnight they called in a super-experienced nurse to change the IV to my other arm. The nurse was a seriously obese older woman who was very good at her work, but who suffered greatly from lack of tact. She asked me why I was in the hospital, and I told her I'd just had lap band surgery. She made this disgusted face and went off on a tirade about how banding never works, and how I wasted my money, and how I should have had hypnosis, like she did. (Yeah, her fat self was doing GREAT with that hypnosis...) I didn't say anything, and she continued to rant, completely unaware of how her inconsiderate words were being received. I finally told her to please stop talking, because I didn't want to hear it. She actually looked offended that I wasn't interested in hearing her opinion. WTH? I made sure to tell the regular nursing staff about it. I hope they straightened her out. It was amazing that she would be like that. Maybe your friend was making a lame joke. If she truly is a friend, she'd probably be embarrassed to think she'd said something that would be taken that way. Good luck with your progress! Dave

    Is my incision infected?

So far it looks ok. But having a bump that hurts, I imagine it feels like a little pimple? You may have a tiny little infection within the skin.. possibly. Just keep it clean as per your doc's directions, and of course, feel free to contact your doc now or later with concerns. A little infection that's localized in the skin isn't usually a big deal (much like a pimple). It's when the infection is deep that it gets scary. @dreamingsmall docs don't put metal staples inside (except onto the actual stomach).. they'll have used absorbable stitches.

  22. Well, I have lost 31 pounds since Oct. 5, 2007. It's not coming off as fast as I would like, but the key thing is that it is coming off. I know I couldn't have lost 31 lbs. without surgery so I am happy with my decision. I am loosing about 5 lbs. a month. I'm exercising more now and that makes me feel better about myself. I've motivated a friend and she now exercises with me. I had my 4th adj. on Jan. 31st and I can really tell a difference in the amount I can eat. I have gotten sick a few times, eating too fast, not chewing enough, so I try to be really careful, but sometimes it happens. I know I will reach my goal, one day at a time! :rolleyes2:

    Is my incision infected?

Sorry about your pain. Why the hell a surgeon would use skin staples on a laparscopic patient is beyond me. Also doctors frequently use a clip applier inside, which are relatively similarish to staples.
  25. Personally, I think its both. We all know its possible to lose weight without a lapband simply with willpower. restriction takes the willpower bit away to some degree, but the behaviour modification sitll have to come from you. I think however that we must be realistic about what the band is doing - even unfilled. Overtime, nearly everyone will require some fill to keep the weight coming off. And statistically, behaviour modification or not, nearly every single person that loses their band regains their weight over time. It just is. So I am thankful for my band, I dont abuse it by making it over tight, I work hard on behaviour changes, but I hate to say that even after six years, behaviour modification isnt the whole answer. I had to have my band ufnilled for over six months - I didnt gain but I hung on by the skin of my teeth. I was able to stick to heatlhy foods and not go wild on McDonalds but the portion sizes increased, hunger increased, etc. And my body, that is now used to eating small amounts and running on under 1500 calories, now cannot cope with normal person amounts of foods - the 2000 or so I am *supposed* to be able to eat at my height, weight, level of activity - I cant. I am now forever dependent on my band because I cant afford to eat more than 1500 a day. And that's from someone who practiced behaviour modification - I ran, I did bootcamp (well I still run and do bootcamp), I ate good foods from all food groups and worked hard to shed the dieting mentality, I cut out counting, weighing, measuring and learned to listent o my body. Works well with the band - without the restriction fronm the band, my body tells me it needs more than it does. I dont mean to be negative, this is a very positive post and everyone is on the right track. But we need these bands and eventually most of us need fills too.
