Noticed side effects from VSG
Marcia91 replied to Marcia91's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for your words of wisdom, I had to take Milk Of Magnesium last week but not much came out, I hoping adding more soft foods to the diet will help with something to come out. lmao I am not really meeting my protein or water goals =( I am working on it tho. -
How much soup to eat?
Arabesque replied to Piastix's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was advised 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purées so that much of the oatmeal & that was all I could physically or wanted to eat. I could eat more soups if I still kept them thin (diluted them) so like a cup but sipped over some time. I’d check with your team to see what they recommend. They may say 1/2 cup but physically you can only eat 1/3. Some teams have requirements for the period of time you can eat like no more than 20 minutes for a meal. (I wasn’t given time frames hence my long sipping just those portions.) Of course it depends on what you can tolerate in the end. Go slowly & only eat until you have had enough (not full). It takes a good 8 weeks to be fully healed so until then your nerve endings aren’t able to send you accurate signals to advise you are full or are eating too much. It’s why portion sizes & time frames can be so helpful during this time. -
Symptoms after Gastric sleeve/galbladder surgery MAYBE GERD?
Miaaaagirl posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all, long time! Hope everyone is keeping well. Just need some advice, I had my gastric sleeve surgery about 8 weeks ago and I have been fine since. I also had my gallbladder removed not long after. But for the last week or so a lot of my meals are so painful to get down, they sit on my chest, I feel a pain going up and down my oesophagus for a long time after I eat and I can just about eat a few bites at a time. But before this week I was doing perfectly ok? Is this normal or could this be GERD? Has anyone experienced GERD? How did you deal with it and what do you think I should do! It feels like bubbles up and down my chest and throat I can hear and feel it ? Sorry for the million questions any help is appreciated dearly!- 6 replies

I was the same, first week was 3kg Ive been told by a physician who I work with that no more than 2kg a week is good moving forward is a great goal as it means your body won’t go into the natural starvation mode and try to hold onto the weight. Plus your body is doing it slowly which is good re rapid weight loss problems also. I also felt sad about how slow it is going but we will get there I’m 3 weeks post op and I’ve only been loosing 1.3kg a week roughly. -
After post op gastric sleeve - my experiences
Raevor85 replied to Raevor85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I saw my primary care doctor and he was able to assist me further with some of things i needed. If i have any questions related to the surgery i will definitely be reaching out to the nurse for sure. I wont see my surgeon again until another 3 months. I have this constant itching every now and then on my stomach its so annoying lol. Could be winter itch i dont but i never had that before. Im going to start rubbing cocoa butter on my stomach hopefully that helps. -
I'm so jealous. I also had surgery 1/24 and have lost 7 pounds. One of the reasons I did the VSG was because when I would try to lose weight, it would come off so slowly---like it would take maybe 6 weeks to lose 5 pounds. It took me 8 months to lose 30 lbs and that was with Qsymia and eating about 1000 calories a day. I would get so frustrated and just give up, I'd go back to my regular diet (which wasn't crazy--usually 1500 - 1800 calories a day) and everything I'd lost would come back. Now, given my usual speed of weight loss, 7 pounds in 9 days is great. But on this liquid diet where I'm getting 300 400 calories a day max, I thought I'd lose more quickly. I was hoping for at least 10-12 lbs by now. Still, I'm happy that I've done this; it's going well and I know that I will succeed. I was just hoping for it to be quicker!

4 Days Post Op - Revision Update
newbegining2024 replied to Chel1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! How are you feeling now? I thought I was crazy because I had jaundice as well, and thought maybe it’s the vitamin making my skin color change. I was yellow for about 3 days. I gain 7 lbs of water retaining as well, and my stomach also was swollen, but when I had the sleeve I was fine. I felt like I was at my last trimester about to give birth. My surgery was 1/22 and the swollen is going down, but still not so comfortable. Would love to know how you are doing! -
Is this a stall?
newbegining2024 replied to Dan1131's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think 21days post op and losing 16-18lbs is great! I just learned in this community that revision surgery have slowly weight loss. My doctor and me doing my own research never came up till I found this site. i am also feeling that I am having multiple stalls. Before pre op diet I lose 15lbs on my own, then during pre op diet I lost 8 lbs on the first week of liquid diet and stall for one week have no weight loss. Then went into surgery while having the stall. After the surgery, I gained 7 lbs of water retention from the iv I got from the hospital. It took a few days and get back to my surgery day weight, then I loss about 5 lbs in a week. so almost 2 weeks after surgery only loss 5 lbs. So 16-18lbs is great! I am jelly here. But like many said everyone is different, although it’s hard, but I am trying to positive. -

I had surgery 1/24 and this morning was my first post op appt (9 days). I lost 18 pounds! Like, WHAT!? It’s not even 2 weeks. I was so shocked I wasn’t even emotional. Today, I am celebrating me for doing this. -
Liquid diet is messing up my BM’s
catwoman7 replied to Bariover54's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
IIRC, the constipation comes after surgery, not before - although not everyone has issues with it. Some people do have diarrhea post-surgery (especially the first week or so), but constipation is much more common, and it can become chronic. I don't remember if I had any particular BM issues during the pre-op liquid diet or not (may not have had many BM's at all given we weren't eating solid food), but I suspect your system is just whacked out by the change. -
Liquid diet is messing up my BM’s
Bariover54 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have to be on a liquid diet for two weeks before my bypass. I’m on day 9 and if I’m not constipated I have diarrhea! Who knew? I’m only having extra protein Slim Fast, broth, jello, water and occasionally a sugar free popsicle. I think my GI system is out of wack! -
This liquid diet is...not easy!
ChunkCat replied to Raevor85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had two weeks of a modified liquid diet (the shakes all day and a small, lean meat and veggie meal at night), and then another week of pure liquids, no snacks, no pudding or yogurt, just shakes! It was SUCH a marathon... Then I had 2 full weeks of strict liquids post-op, no puddings, no yogurt, and I couldn't tolerate any protein shakes or jello. But post op it was easier in a way because my body was telling me very clearly it didn't want any of those things! Pre-op the diets are a serious head game. LOL -
Today I changed from chicken broth to a cream based soup. I had been eating chicken broth for WEEKS now and was so excited to try a cream based soup. At lunch I was able to finish 1/2 cup with no issues. My tummy felt full and heavy and I wanted to nap. For dinner, I reheated some soup and everything was fine. I was laying in bed, watching some Netflix and then from nowhere the back of my mouth started salivating. I ran to the medicine cabinet for some Zofran. Even thought it dissolved completely, I still threw up my soup from dinner. I was dreading that heaving motion, but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. I think I was just too excited to move onto new things and my stomach wasn’t ready. Tomorrow that soup is going in the garbage and I’m going back to what works, Chicken Broth!!!

Food Before and After Photos
Arabesque replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Cupboard/freezer pie. Minced beef, vegetables & puff pastry from my freezer & tinned tomatoes & lentils from my pantry. Just used fresh basil, parsley & an onion. Made enough for 6 serves so some will go back into the frezer. Ate about 2/3 of this but all the pastry. It’s odd. I struggle with bread, pasta & rice but can eat some puff pastry. Nit a lot but some. 🤷🏻♀️ (Watching UK celebrity Masterchef while I ate dinner as you do.) -
After post op gastric sleeve - my experiences
Arabesque replied to Raevor85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is terrible. What sort of aftercare is that. Send an email directly to the surgeon if you can listing the questions you have & didn’t receive answers about or didn’t have a chance to ask because you were pushed out the door. I had good follow up which is why I’m very surprised & disappointed for you at your after care. I saw my surgeon at week 2, 1 month & then the 3rd month. A colleague then took up my follow up appointments. I saw them every three months until my third year. I still see this doctor every 6 months. I don’t know for how much longer though. I guess my next appointment at my 5 year mark will tell. -
This liquid diet is...not easy!
newbegining2024 replied to Raevor85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, that’s really hard! I applaud all of you who can do the full 2 weeks liquid only. My two weeks liquid diet allowed me to have one small meal a day. It was lunch or dinner with 1 hand size flat lean protein and same portion for veggies. Allowing to be able to have one small meal helped a lot for me and then 2 days before surgery the last mean at lunch then next day no meal and full on liquid till surgery. -

I’m 3 weeks and on puree but am able to have soft scrambled eggs and cottage cheese. been having a lot of pumpkin soup. making overnight oats- that then goes in the blender with some protein and a banana and some peanut butter :) -
Update***** It’s been an extremely difficult process. I’m emotionally defeated😭. My hair has continued to fall out not shed but completely fall out to the point I look sickly. I have seen derm. Had a biopsy done. Basically all my hair entered the shedding phase at once. On top of that I have some hormonal issues that has resulted in female/male pattern hair loss as well. Only thing left to do is take the clippers and even then there’s not much left. My surgeon actually looked me in my eyes last week and said he was so sorry I was going through all this. It’s not a lack or protein, biotin, or any nutrient deficiencies. I’ve literally done everything right according to my surgeon. I am literally in tears every time I look in the mirror. Just wanted to voice my frustrations in a safe place.

I had to do 2 weeks of a very low calorie high protein diet. Its actually going ok, but I do miss eating cereal more than anything else haha. 2 days before my surgery I start liquid only, then the day before I have to stop the protein drinks at 6PM, and NPO after midnight. I have to be at the hospital at 6:30AM for a surgery time of 8:30AM!!! Im getting more excited than nervous for now. Im sure that will change once the date gets even closer. -

That sounds really good Marcia.. I start soft foods next week and will try it out.. -
I had the 2 incisions that hurt for a couple weeks, and I was so afraid of ripping something if I wasn't positioned right. My surgeon seemed miffed when I asked about it. He said there's no way his stitches were going to come loose. "I didn't use cheap common thread," he said. Seriously?? LOL After that I just took my pain meds, slept on my side with a huge body pillow which I hugged tightly for support and quit worrying about it. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I have an appointment with the family Dr on the 22nd and will show her what is going on to have it documented.. I honestly did not know if I would do skin removal cause I did not think it would be an issue but I am only 10 weeks Post op and still have 95lbs to lose so I am sure I am going to need it.. I will try the baby powder/ cornstarch blend..

If you plan to get skin removal surgery and want it to be covered by insurance, make sure you document with your doctor ALL problems with skin rashes, sores etc. It isn't usually covered since it is considered cosmetic but if you can show a history of problems, there's a better chance of it being covered. I have lost over 100 pounds and have some loose skin, but I am getting cryo therapy twice a week. It helps to produce collagen and tightens my skin as the weight comes off. If I had waited till I hit goal weight, I don't think it would have been as effective. I also sit in an infrared sauna which has its own list of benefits. Rebounding helps too. There are some alternatives to surgery. Being proactive is important but it also depends on the amount of weight you have to lose and DNA. When I had rashes before losing the weight, I used a baby powder/cornstarch blend to keep the area dry. Moisture can make things painful and possibly infected. Good luck!!

Feeling very emotional and regretting
newbegining2024 replied to newbegining2024's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thank you! Everyone’s messages is making me clammed down with my sad emotions. I feel the same about the sleeve surgery, I was pretty much ok after 2 -3 days after the sleeve, and didn’t have allergic reaction to the glue. The feeling after the revision was completely different so I guess I was shocked of how much I am going through. I was under the anesthesia much longer this time and I am still feeling dizzy, sweating from doing nothing right now. The nurse said my body is trying to get rid of the anesthesia from aspiration. Hoping to feel better soon.
