  2. I REALLY appreciate your responses! It's such a relief to me to read what you've shared. My doctor and his sidekick dietitian suggested that I supplement my mushies with Protein shakes, as in between Snacks, and to make sure I get enough protein for the day. They said their long-term patients found the Protein shake supplement/snack beneficial even years later. Not sure I personally could drink it for that long, but I'll try to keep an open mind. I'm a huge fan of "real" food and would rather find the healthier "real" food alternative. The discomfort and physical inconvenience of recovery was enough to keep me on track so far without any effort (pain easily trumps hunger for me every time), but now that I'm not uncomfortable anymore and I'm hungry. I really got to get into some good, healthy habits ... before I give in to the siren song of the buffet line.
  3. With my first fill I could eat just about anything and have NO problems. I just had my 2nd fill a week ago and have now have 5cc in 14cc band. So, yesterday my husband and I wanted to go out to our fav chinese place. I LOVE their crab bake and I thought ooohhh I have been doing SOOO good I want to try it. Plus I though crab and cheeze good protein Anyhow I took 3 bites and got this AWFUL pain in my chest. I though uh oh...I'm about to throw this up....I ran to the bathroom and sure enough up my food came.....it really threw me for a loop bc up until now I havent had that prob. Anyway it scared me enough that I have gone back to soft food......so I guess no crab bake for me. I dont even want to think about trying meat.

Protein, carbs, water - Oh My!

Follow this. Quality carbs before, quality protein after. Fasted cardio works for tons of people, but at a non intense state. Working out hard on an empty stomach in most will promote catabalysm and you'll end up burning tons of unnecessary muscle mass, you'll lose weight, but that weight will be the worst kind to lose, muscle. Look at low GI carbs. 70% of your energy starts with carbs, eat some oatmeal or sweet potatoes before a workout. You can google best pre workout carbs and get a ton of ideas, or better yet, click here.
  5. I'm trying to figure out what to eat/drink and when in regards to a work out. I started c25k this week and will be starting back to the YMCA next week. I know I need to be hydrated before a work out but what about protein and carbs? Protein before or after a workout? I never worried about it before because I had PLENTY of everything to last but now my intake is so small I want to do it a the best times. And thoughts or suggestions?

    Preop Protein Nausea

Pre-op I drank the RTD EAS carb control shakes. I would stick a straw in them... Drink about half, hold my breath while I stuck some peanut butter or almonds in my mouth. Then I would repeat. Never made me sick, unless I slowed myself to actually taste it. Post-op milk has been my best friend! I never drank milk pre-op. but when it goes you additional protein... I am all about some milk! I also use unjury. Love it! I add Pb2 and it kills the sweetness. Good luck to you!

    Everyone Experiences Hair Loss?

If you do not eat enough protein, then you may lose hair. It seems a lot of us take biotin to prevent hair loss.

    Protein powder help!

Use any unflavored protein isolate, (You can buy it in bulk, much cheaper). Mix it in a little cool water first, then add hot water. It will mix as well as it's going to. I asked the same question after mine turned into little lumps of styrofoam.
  9. Happy birthday!! What a great sounding weekend long celebration - with the focus on spending great time with your loved ones. I plan to make some of Eggface's Protein ice-cream this week. I won her giveaway of the ice creammaker last month and was so excited!! Keep up the great work TES!!

    Protein pills....?!

I think Protein pills would only be for folks who absolutely cannot stand the tase of Protein powder. I haven't priced them recently but whey powder is cheaper I believe. And even at a year out I would rather chew up a tab than swallow one and have it lay on my stomach. The only pills I swallow are gel capsules, the rest I chew up no matter how bad they taste. Have you tried protein powder?

    1st week Banded

That sounds like the same diet I had the first week post-op. My nutritionist specified that Water in the Protein mix counts against water, so maybe that helps. You could put a scoop (~25gm protein) in 16.9 oz bottle of water, that way just by getting your protein in you've also gotten in 40 - 45 oz of water. What makes it hard for you to get your water in? As for the hunger - water. It will satiate you for a while, even when you're hungry. I can't give you any better advice b/c we're having opposite reactions. I was banded March 1 and have yet to feel hungry. I'm maxing out around 3 oz food per day. Then again, I'm constantly sipping water, too.
  12. My nutritionist has me drinking 4 8oz protein shakes a day and 6oz of soup and then 4-8oz of yogurt I'm 2 protein shakes in today a yogurt and a soup it's 4:15 and I'm starving today's the first day since Tuesday I'm not on any pain killers either, is this normal?

    Protein Shake Questions

Hi! I am super picky as far as Protein shakes. Can barely tolerate the taste without gagging for the most part. My surgery date is May 1st and I have been experimenting to prepare myself to "endure" those first 2-4 weeks of mainly protein supplements. Preop fruit is ok for Protein Shakes but the first 2 weeks AFTER surgery will definitely be liquid only (no fruit until the "pureed stage"). Basically broths, thin protein shakes (skim milk, 1%, Water consistency), sugar free popsicles. Your sleeve MUST have that time to heal properly before the pureed stage. It seems unbearable but I'm sure those 2 weeks will be well worth it! All of that to say, if you like Peanut Butter try "Metabolic Nutrition: Protizyme Whey Protein Shakes in Peanut Butter Cookie flavor. I mixed it with 8 oz. skim milk (1 scoop powder) and 5 ice cubes. (you can add maybe a tablespoon of natural peanut butter/spenda/sugar free torani syrup to sweeten it up a little more) Pulse everything in a blender until ice is blended down. Honestly there was no trace of protein taste and it was actually enjoyable. They come in a several other flavors if you don't like peanut butter (such as vanilla cake, chocolate cake, banana creme) It's a little on the pricey side but can help get ya through that first month. Also unjury unflavored protein is another good source if you are unable to tolerate the sweetness of flavored whey protein. The best use of this is in your broths/soups that have been strained. (for 1st 2 weeks or however long your doctor has you on that first stage). Note that the protein should not be added to the Soup or any temperature above 130 degrees because it will curdle. The best way is to premix a scoop of the Unjury with 8 oz. water. In the mean time go ahead and heat up your broth in the microwave. Then add the Unjury mixture to the broth and reheat a bit more (make sure the temp never goes above 130, so you may have to heat it for a few seconds and then test it in between. food thermometers are the best! Hope this was of some help!.
  15. Saw my new dietitian. Loved her. She was very down to earth, very straight forward and direct. Loved that. I told her about the questions that my trainer has, as far as supplements and such post workout. She made some small changes in her recommendations for Protein, and changed my Protein powder to a different one that contains extra amino acids for post workout. She also increased my daily protein a bit and increased my carbs a bit. Tomorrow I have my first session with my new lifting trainer, SO excited!!! I'm back. HERE I AM!!

    Sugary Drinks

How do you feel about chocolate milk? When I have a sweet craving, I pick up a bottle of 100 Calorie Nesquik Chocolate Milk from the local convenience store. Ice cold, sweet and creamy...8 grams of protein. It completely satisfies my craving and with the low-ish calories and good protein count, I don't feel guilty.

    Prednisone & weight gain

Sunsett Usually the weight gain is in patients that are on long term steroid use. In your case the doctor is treating you with predisone because it will decrease the inflammation caused by your asthma and respiratory infection hence allow you to cough up all the mucus in your lungs and prevent pneumonia from forming and let you breath easier. Predisone also will increase your blood sugar drasticly if you are diabetic. There are other options avaliable instead of taking the predisone but this usually works the best. 5 days of predisone is nothing, I would suggest to take it and feel better before Christmas arrives. Good Luck! and Good Health!

    Protein Shake Questions

You can make it with fruit, but that's a lot of filler. You'll get used to it. I challenge you to make a shake with PVL whey Gourmet Peanut Butter chocolate Protein powder, a tbsp of peanut butter, and skin milk and then tell me you didn't like it!

    Another Saturday in the country

Well guess what..First day of winter vacay and I am sick. I am hoping its not the flu because my bones feel like they hurt. My band is tight as a 10 year old virgin! (sorry, but I have wanted to say that for a long time!) I suppose that's good because I don't think I will be burning many calories today. Getting my butt from the bed to the easy chair to the bathroom isn't exactly aerobic. I subscribe to a newsletter from Hungrygirl http://hungrygirl.com. She is a super peppy non banded (I think) chronic dieter. I know that she is financially hooked in with some of the companies she reviews, but her reviews are pretty straight on. She reviews new diet food and has come up with some good ones before I have heard of them elsewhere. Some of her recent rave reviews have been on the light double churned ice creams-haven't tasted a bad one yet (100-120 cals). Quaker Mini Delights in caramel drizzle (90) flavor. These are fantastic! She is fanatical about Fiber One and uses it for breadcrumbs in the recipies she adapts to make them low cal. She is also nuts about tofu shiratake noodles. While I suppose they don't taste too bad after cooking, when you open them they smell like old seafood. I just can't get past it. My new fave is using ranch dressing for a dipping sauce for anything savory. It packs a taste punch with just a bit. It also helps to "lubricate" food for us bandsters. Anyway-I got on this Hungrygirl topic because I ordered a case of Vitatops (muffin tops) http://vitalicious.com at a decent price through her website. They are really expensive, but I got 30 for $29. They have 5-6 grams of fiber and about 100 cals each and are enriched with vitamins. I know some people with bread issues might not like these, but they are delicious if you can tolerate this sort of thing. I had the peanut butter fudge for breakfast this am. So back to moping around garnering sympathy from my DH and DS. Trystelle

    Four month post op pic.

Thanks ladies! I feel good (physically). I have days that I'm tired and lethargic... Then I realize I've missed my vitamins or skipped out on protein (easy fixes! Lol)... Mentally, I still feel like the fat girl in the room. I know I've lost 76lbs, but I still feel just as fat. My mind hasn't caught up with my body yet, I guess. My skin is getting so loose. I can pull my tummy skin out so far. It's weirdddddd. Lol
  22. I know this topic has come up a gazillion times, but here we go again. I met with my surgeon last week, and he gave me the option of doing either surgery. I had assumed RnY because I occasionally have mild reflux and I'm quite large (BMI > 50). The doctor said my reflux is so mild, that it doesn't preclude sleeve surgery. I don't have diabetes, or any of the standard comorbidities that would typically push someone towards RnY. For me, advantages of sleeve are being able to use NSAIDs if needed, maintaining my pyloric valve, no surgery on my intestines, lower complication rate, less malabsorption. Advantages of RnY: greater average weight loss in first year (though it seems to even out by year 3 according to my reading), potential negative reinforcement of eating sweets (dumping syndrome). The Vitamin protocols for both are the same with my program, and our bariatrics specialist says that the risk of malnutrition is very low if you are compliant with Vitamins (<3% for compliant folks, while they typically see closer to 15% of patients with issues). Take your vitamins, folks! For me, it comes down to am I willing to take a higher risk of complications for the possibility of greater weight loss? I'm in this to be healthy and active, not skinny or attractive. It's a tough call to make. Especially when the end result, what happens 3, 5, 15 years down the line, all comes down to how I use the tool that I am given. What were the key things that you thought about when making your choice?
  23. Fiddleman, thank you for posting the chart for calories. Do you have something like that for protein and carbs for the same time periods? I am 3 hrs from my NUT and she really doesn't seem to know much about post surgery diet needs.

Dr. Wants Very Lo-Cal diet forever

i personally will Not lose weight unless my calories are over 1000 per day. if your working out - you HAVE to get more calories in to fuel yourself. as crystal mentions - every wk i allow for a treat, be that an extra snack/dessert - chips/queso - another glass of wine here or there...none of it halts the scale, in fact the opposite occurs. and 3 months on a soft diet, seem excessively long before introducing solid food into your diet. my dr after the 4 wks post op diet wants his patients to eat be able to eat solid protein & start encorporating balanced meals of complex carbs/fruits/veggies. i typically eat 3 meals a day plus one snack - avg meal consists of 1cup of food. this is a gauge, some days i eat more - some less. i think you have to play around with your meals (calories & quantity) to determine what will work for you & produce weight loss.
