Looking to see if my Dr. Will do the revision because of my Gerd
jenuinelygenuinely replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I went with a totally different hospital/program after having a bad nutritionist. Like @Daja I had to get an upper endoscopy and a barium swallow test done which was required. My first consult the doctor told me a revision would be best if I had severe GERD but they weren't going to approve me for surgery without doing tests...LOL During my tests they found the reason for my GERD and deemed it medically necessary. The surgeon did tell me if they found a HERNIA he would've performed SAD-IS procedure or a DS. -
I have decided to get a revision from a sleeve to gastric bypass. My heartburn is getting worse and i'm gaining weight. I was originally sleeved in 2017. I am ready for this second chance because I have to self pay. I can't believe I have two full-time jobs and I'm still concerned about costs for this procedure. My first job won't cover the procedure and the second contracting job won't either. Since being sleeved, I never got to my goal weight. If you have any recommendations for bariatric surgeons in the Atlanta area, please let me know because my original surgeon has since retired during covid. I've found one surgeon, but he's very pricey at $24,000 and it doesn't include post-op appointments (insurance can cover), labs (insurance can cover), nutritional visits, (not covered by insurance) or supplements. Any feedback is welcomed.

Fitness level before surgery
Possum220 replied to Gucci73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was only able to walk past 4 houses and back. That was the most I could walk. Four months have gone by since my bypass. I can now walk 2 km per day. 1 mile? My ankle has been sore from arthritis and arthritis in my lower back. I feel so much better not carrying the weight that I used to. Now things are getting easier like looking after myself and even standing is so much easier. Hopefully your support team will be able to work around your health issues to get you to a better place. -
It has been 12 years since my husband passed. I am scheduled for surgery August 24. I have not dated at all since his passing But I feel this may change after my bypass. I am 60 years old. Have two wonderful grown responsible children. And three grandchildren that are the loves of my life

Looking to see if my Dr. Will do the revision because of my Gerd
Daja replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I went with a different surgeon due to insurance issues. Had major GERD issues with Barrettβs esophagus, my GI had me maxed out on PPIβs and did PH monitoring, EGD, and Bariumβs swallow tests. All of this is usually required by insurance companies before they will pay for the revision. Sometimes GERD is caused by a change in the anatomy of the original sleeve (which was not the case for me) my Dr told me if that is the case they can use a ballon to change it to what it should be or try to resleeve rather than a revision to RNY. Itβs definitely worth a consult before such a major surgery. Wishing you all the bestβ¦ -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully
Dogmom68 replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes, my doctor is deciding whether or not to appeal or just submit a new request for authorization for repair to my hiatal hernia (and I self pay the bypass portion.) I have BCBS and they said my revision was not medically necessary. Iβm afraid if my doctor submits paperwork for an appeal (and the whole thing gets denied again) then thatβs the end of the road for me. I donβt mind paying the bypass portion since itβs very doable ($2600.) I almost feel like the hernia repair is more likely to be authorized. What do you think?? -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think it depends on when your last WLS was and your surgeon/insurance. I know I had to do the 2 week pre-op liquid diet again for my revision (due to gerd and hiatal hernia of almost my entire gastric sleeve) but I didnβt have to do the nutritional appts or the 6 month preop again because it was within a yr of my VSG. -

Did your insurance have an option to appeal?!?? I would appeal right away! I feel like a Hiatal Hernia is a reason for a revision. Praying everything goes smooth and this storm will pass! You got this!! -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully

Well, Iβm pretty disheartened. My surgery was pushed from 8/8 to 8/29 to give my doctorβs office time to resubmit paperwork for an authorization for a hiatal hernia repair. My insurance didnβt approve the bypass revision so I may have to pay that portion of the surgery myself. I had already started my pre-op liquid diet so now thatβs on hold for a few more weeks. I was so ready to have my surgery next Monday and now I just feel disappointed and frustrated. If I could afford to pay for the entire surgery, I would just to avoid the hoops Iβm having to jump through to get this approved. I could use some words of encouragement right about now. π’ -
I had never heard of this but if it is the same as DS surgery itβs been around a while and seems to be a good surgery. Itβs a little more drastic than the bypass or sleeve but it is said to produce more weight loss. If your doctor thinks itβs warranted I would consider it. The main thing I have heard that is really different is that you may need to take some extra vitamins post surgery. We all have to take them in the beginning and most people have to take some for life but DS usually have to take a few more. As long as you are someone who will comply with taking vitamins probably 3 or 4 times a day for life it should be an option. I would check out Hop Scotchβs suggestion though and see what others who have had the surgery have to offer.

Food intolerance after wls
redhead_che replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had a revision and the thing I find most interesting is the food I had probably 4 nights a week post sleeve, canβt tolerate it and donβt like it anymoreβtilapia! I had a go to way of cooking and spicing it and looking at it now makes me want to be sick π€’ Iβm actually getting more protein from vegan sources and Iβve never had the desire to be veganβ¦just what my body can tolerate now. -
Hey everyone! I was just thinking, I had my bypass in Feb this year and I'm slowly but surely learning what I can and can't eat. There are randomly some foods I cannot stand now that I'm bypassed and it's not dumping, it just they taste to intense and sickening that I can't do it. Ever since surgery I am OBSESSED with hot tea (never was before). Drink it every day multiple times a day...something about a hot herbal drink feels so good in my esophagus lol Here are things I cannot stand now that im bypassed but used to be able to eat in large amounts: peanuts, peanut butter, any protein peanut powder or anything with peanut flavor, alfredo sauce, full fat cream cheeses or dairy based dips and spreads, pesto, corn based chips, nacho cheese sauce, mayo/cream sauces and dressing, gravy, chowder. So mostly my taste buds and like my throat (I get a weird sensation there with these foods) have changed and it's like im super honed into how fatty a food is when before I wasn't. It's weird but of course I like it because it helps me eat better and know my limits. So what are some foods you cannot do anymore after surgery that you liked before? Hi everyone, I'm just starting on this journey and have mete with my surgeon who mentioned SIPS surgery (Stomach Intestinal Pylorus Sparing). From what I understand it's somewhat of a combination of gastric bypass and duodenal switch surgery. I am not finding much research on it at all, which makes me wonder if it's a good choice. My surgeon advised he will do either surgery ( I'm pretty well set in mind with GP, but am open to options). He described the effects of increased weight loss, lowered rate of ulcers, strictures, & bowel obstructions, increased absorption of nutrients, lowered risk of diarrhea, increased hormonal changes. Has anyone ever had this done or seen much information about it? I still have more than enough time to decide, so I'm in no rush to make a decision. I'd love to hear your experiences with this!

Sleep Apnea after surgery
Iβ‘BypassedMyPhatAssβ‘ replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had sleep apnea before I had my Lap Band surgery. I was on bipap. I was off my machine within a few weeks, maybe 8 if I remember correctly. I just had revision surgery to bypass 12 days ago and it was pretty cool, as a former sleep apnea patient, I was selected to be in a study about former sleep apnea patients and the effects of anesthesia on them. So I had to wear some electrodes from the moment anesthesia ended for 24 hours. The anesthesiologist heading up the study said I definitely still do not have sleep apnea according to their readings. -

Hi Nina I had a revision or reconstruction for the same reason as dream believe. I went to Mexicali MX to a hospital. Mexicali Bariatrics did the reconstruction. It's been a slow process and I am 11 weeks. I feel very satisfied with limited food. I am exercising a lot more this time. I have more energy. I had to have a barium swallow and I had xray from the first sleeve. He told me it was not my fault for the weight regain. The did a barium swallow after revision checking for leaks and to show me the difference in the restriction. I lost 60lbs really fast the first time. I gained 25lbs over 6 years. I have lost 26lbs so far. The first time I lost a lb a day the first month. If your not happy get the second opinion.

Band to Bypass Surgery coming up...SCARED
CDMC1972 replied to MaryRN66's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I am in the process of converting from a band to another type of WLS. I got the band in June 2009, and had it removed in June 2021, due to complications with acid reflux. I met with my surgeon in May of this year to discuss a revision. Due to the issues with the band, he doesn't recommend the sleeve, but the bypass. I am nervous about the re-routing and the fact that I am almost 50. My current weight is 250 lbs. Would you be able to share some of your experiences/challenges before, during and after the revision surgery? I have completed most of my clearances and will meet with the surgeon on September 1st--I think during that visit we will discuss my surgery date and the type of surgery. I appreciate any insight you can provide. Thank you! -
Considering lapband nervious but need help loseing weight and keep off
ShoppGirl replied to Bulletproof's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Is there a reason that you are interested in the lap band instead of sleeve, DS or bypass. As others have said many doctors donβt even do them anymore. -

Hello Tammy! Welcome. My surgery is scheduled for August 19th. I will be having gastric bypass along with hiatal hernia repair. I saw my surgeon for my last preop visit today. I start the liquid diet one week before my surgery. It is all getting so very real now.
