  1. My surgery is Monday and im starting to panic!!! Im scared of the surgery itself plus the fear of not getting enough water and protein.....I don't want my nerves get the best of me and have me back out....I've wanted this surgery for so long and worked so hard to get to this point to have my own fear make me back out at the last minute.....did anyone else feel like this right before surgery? ???
  2. Hello Kandi here I'm new the VSG board. I had my surgery on November 23 2010 weighing 335 pre op 350. I live in Grand Rapids MI and Dr. Randall Baker of Grand Health partners performed my surgery. I couldn't ask for a better surgeon or better care at spetrum health Blodgett. I am one week post op and I have went through a series of emotions. I was excited to thinking how easy the recovery is and then back to what in the World have i done to by body. I have been on the liquid diet and I am having a hard time getting the protein down but I am working on it. I also have flu like symptoms needless to say that is where the doubt has came from. GHP provides your supplements for the two weeks but I am so tired of after taste. I have never wanted some cream of wheat or eggs SO BAD!!! I guess I need someone to tell me it gets better.

    Methods of Self paying

I spoke with Dr. Q's facilitator yesterday and they no longer offer financing. He said they never offered in-house financing but utilized an outside company. They no longer utilize that option because the customer's account kept getting sold to other companies and their terms of the loan would also change.

    Special K Protein Shakes?

I have not and still pre op but the reward for the calories doesn't seem that great. My Protein shakes have around 28g protein with only 100 cal and 2 carbs. Might be a good treat though
  5. I saw these while I was at the store today.has anyone tried them? 10g Protein 150 calories 1g sugar 5g fat
  6. Same here. I don't weigh everyday, but I do bounce up and down within the same 5 pounds from week to week. As for the holidays, I was a little above my bounce range after a week of mom's good home cooking, deserts, alcohol and sweets galore. As soon as I got home I detoxed all the sugar out of my system and went back to protein/veggie basics. Took about 2-3 weeks to get back to the bottom of my bounce range. But fluctuation is pretty normal for me. Last week I was actually below my normal range and yesterday I was at the top end. Just go back to basics for a bit, throw in a little extra activity, and you'll get back on track.

    Pre-op diet

I WISH I had a liquid diet pre op. Instead I have a strict diet of mostly protein (I can handle that) and vegetables (HATE them). I understand the importance of the pre op diet, and would be willing to drink veg. juices, even going so far as to juice them myself, but that's not allowed. So far I'm on the "Pre" pre-op diet as I'm still working through the preliminaries. Still heavy on veggies, but a little more doable--I'm managing two servings most days, but must have 3-5 later on. So, does anyone have any ideas, recipes or advice about how to prepare these mass quantities? I love spaghetti sauce, even with chunks of tomato. I've bought some canned stewed and diced tomatoes, what can I do to make them taste like the sauce? Carrots I can mash with potatoes, but won't be allowed potatoes later. Soup? How to season it? I'm not much of a cook.

    Ugh...darn the naysayers!

I had proximal RNY in March 2004. There were a lot fewer options as to procedures being done. I have the kind of personality that if I can figure a way around something I will. At the time of surgery I was working in an office that had only single ladies room with 3stalls for 50+ women. These 2 considerations shaped my choice of procedure. A RNY is not something you can reverse without going through surgery again. I did not go for a distal or duodenal switch because of sharing a bathroom in very close quarters.I had sweeter vs a bloater eating habit and I had read that too much sweet stuff could cause you dump and that was like a fate worse than death! About 1 month post- op a friend of mine found about a pound of fresh duck fois gras on sale and we couldn't resist hauling out my fois gras cook book. I was still on medical leave so we planned to have it the following night. I spent the day making a roasted garlic puree to go with it. I am the cook so I reverently pan seared our prize.and we sat down to eat. I was sated after about 4 bites. About a h Alf hour later I started to feel awful. I had extremely sharp pains in my stomach. This was closely followed by very, severe stomach and intestinal cramps and diarrhea. I was dumping and hoped I was going to die to stop the pain. I had not realized that excessively fatty food could also cause very big problems!! So I learned that my new stomach had done just what I wanted. I was going to have to stick to the programme or bad things would happen again. I knew that I had picked the right procedure for me. I am now 10 years out and have lost and kept off 150lbs. I considered both the mental and physical consequences of the available surgery back then. I needed to have real consequences if I did not follow the Rules. I am sorry for the long post but as you know you have to choose what is best for your life and psyche. Having the surgery will change your life and probably also save it as it did for me. Cheers, Jane

    Creamy Stage Day 1

Of course you can have ham. Just purée it. Same with chicken. You probably should have blended the eggs too. Eggs are not creamy (I assume you scrambled them). Smooth peanut butter would have been better. I don't have a problem with a but of mashed potato but add some cheese or protein powder. you can have cottage cheese, I bet. And yogurt.
  10. Find a substitute. Protein shakes, SF pudding, sf hot chocolate all go down real nice. You can gain weight with a band if you are not willing to make life style changes. It sounds harsh I know, but really?? You did not have surgery because you like your current weight/health level. Suck it up! There are a lot of people here who have been successful. A few have not, but most of these are finding away around the band.
  11. My program was called Options and is through Kaiser Permanente. It took nearly a year, including 24 weeks of classes and having to lose 10% of my weight. Having waited so long it's kind of surreal that I'm finally so close to my surgery date! I actually live in North County, but Kaiser, in my particular area, contracts out to Pacific Bariatric in SD and all bariatric surgery is done at Scripps. I am only required to do one day of liquids. I think that might be because of already having lost the 10%. But it does make things easier. I feel exactly like I did when I first made the decision to have surgery, in equal parts elated, nervous, hopeful, eager, and above all else, happy. As I've never had surgery I'm, of course, a bit apprehension about the unknown from time to time. But I am 100% certain that this is the right step for me. And as I've overloaded on research this past year, I honestly feel I couldn't be more ready! How about you? What led you here and how are you feeling? ????

    Liver Shrinking? Vent...kinda!?

I'm pretty sure it's a combination...but mostly a deprivation of carbs that shrinks the liver. I mean...if you fasted for two weeks, your liver, among other things, would shrink. It's just that most foods fall into two catagories or a combination of the two...carbs and Protein. I know it stinks...I hated my pre-op diet...but here I am 9 months later and it's all a distant memory. Hang in there...it's worth it

    Hungry

I sure hope it is normal, because I get hungry about every 2-3 hours. I eat something small, enough to safisty me, but not a meal every 2-3 hours. Yep, I get that rumble (almost a kind of hurt) hunger pang, and when Matilda (the name I have for my new stomach) gets hungry, boy does she let me know!! I have noticed that my hunger pangs are much more pronounced now that my stomach is smaller. The first hunger pang I had after surgery scared me to death---it hurt and I thought something was wrong with me. I eat a tablespoon or so of peanut butter on a saltines, an ounce or 2 of cheese, half a protein bar, etc. whenever I get the hungries every 2-3 hours. I really hope this is normal, because I have been doing this since my surgery. I have found it helps me to snack on small stuff about 5-6 times a day instead of having 3 meals a day.
  15. I too couldn't get past the smell and taste of Protein powders. What FINALLY worked for me was the unjury chicken Soup. It's a little salty in flavor, but none of the issues I had with other Proteins. It is 21 grams of protein. I also use [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Nutrition-Instantized-Protein-2-7-Pound/dp/B000GIUQOG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1276226079&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: 100% Any whey Protein: Health & Personal Care[/ame] and add 1/2 scoop to my yogurt and or sugar free Cocoa powder. I cannot taste it at all and it boosts my protein by 8.5 grams. Good luck in finding what works for you. I know it was a struggle for me and many others.
  16. I am two days out from surgery and I tried to drink Isopure, and Cytomax but I can't get past the smell of Isopure and Cytomax is too sweet, even cut with Water. Any other Protein thoughts? My nut says clears until next Thurs, but my doc said shakes were Ok, not sure what the story is??

    Raw veggies?

I'm with Kaiser Fremont. Most people (including me), advance to Stage 4 at 6 weeks, which includes basically all foods. I was advanced last Thursday and so far have enjoyed raw bell peppers, lettuce, and carrots. I've also had corn on cob. Yum! I am so full after eating my Protein that I haven't had room for much else, so it's been 1/8-14 cup max on the veggies. Kaiser seems to advance faster than many Dr.s programs. Clears last less than 48 hours, Full liquids (which includes greek yogurt, cottage cheese and cream soups) lasts till two weeks post-surgery, and soft foods (soft fruits, cooked veggies, all soft Proteins except beef) lasts till six weeks after surgery. Lynda
  18. Does your doctor say this procedure is reversible? Not that u want to reverse it for nothing but in case there is a severe complication in the future, it's always good to have a reversible option so the body can go back to its anatomy
  19. Hi, I just wanted to see who else has their port in places other than under their rib cage. Mine is about six inches down from the top of my shoulder. The PA said that he can access it easier and use a much smaller needle for fills. Also, he said that it seems to be a less used, more comfortable spot. So far it seems just fine. But I am going to ask next visit what will happen when I have my upcoming boob job. (hey -- if I loose the weight ==> i am getting myself a new, higher tighter set). BTW: My husband is thrilled with the weight loss so far.

    Protein bars

I used to be an avid consumer of Quest Bars, but they changed their main ingredient several months ago and they just did NOT agree with me after that. Made me SUPER bloated and gassy. So I now switched to Combat Crunch. They are a little higher in calories and carbs than the Quest Bars were, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me since I'm now in maintenance. The one I have at my desk right now has the following nutrition: Calories: 210 Fat: 7g Saturated Fat: 4g Carbs: 25g Dietary Fiber: 12g Sugar: 5g Sugar Alcohol: 1g Protein: 20g So it's basically 210 calories, 20g protein, and 12g net carbs. The Quest Bars were more like 190 calories, 23g protein, and 3-4g net carbs. So better nutritionally, but not worth making myself sick over.
  21. Change things today. Not tomorrow. Right now, get up from your desk or computer or wherever you are and go walk up and down the stairs twice. Get a big glass of Water and drink it. Plan supper and make it Protein heavy and low/no carb. I was in a slump for FIVE months. The holidays were three months ago. Don't let that turn into five for you. The only way to change is to change now. Finish today strong and make an appointment with your doc and NUT for a back on track visit and plan. If you can, get outside and walk when you get home today. Think of all the reasons you had WLS and all the benefits you've already gotten. Think of where you could be one month from today with doable changes if you start *right now*. This is how I am breaking my slump. Never ever ever give up on yourself!
  22. They'll review your medical history, current problems, medications, etc. They'll probably review eating habits and help to determine if sleeve will be best option. Mine listened to my heart and lungs. He examined my abdomen because I had previous abdominal surgery (not sure if they usually do exam). Good luck!
  23. I haven't posted in so long but I am now at the point where I really want to get this ball rolling. I used to have Kaiser So Cal insurance and switched to Aetna PPO 1/1/09. I did this in the hopes that I could get approval through insurance but I keep getting blocked. It seems that even though I have a BMI over 40 right now that isn't good enough and they want to see a two year history of BMI >40. I have been 35+ for over two years but that isn't good enough either. I haven't even tried to go through insurance cause I don't want to get declined. I just want the damn surgery! I have been going to Overeaters Anonymous in order to deal with the emotional issues as to why I eat over everything so hopefully I will have all of my emotional ducks in a row once I get the surgery. So, now I am in the process of finding doctors who will do patients that self pay. The doctor I wanted only does clients with self pay if they meet the criteria of getting insurance to cover but somehow get turned down. That was Dr. Martin @ Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. I am really hoping that some of you can share some of your experiences, strengths and thoughts regarding doctors, self pay options, prices and any other advice you could possibly give me. I just need help and I feel like I keep coming up on dead ends... I am in the Pasadena area and the surgeons that I am going to place calls to are Dr. Owen, Dr. Nazarian, Dr, Liu, Dr. Korman and Dr. Oliak. Does anyone have any other ideas? Any suggestions? Any reviews? HELP?!?!?!?!?
  24. Hello, My name is Raynae' and I just got my surgery date and am so excited and a little nervous. I am going to Dr. Cywes & Dr. Baptista in Jacksonville, FL. I was fortunate to go to the seminar with Kaliah Ali and hear her story and receive a autographed copy of her book! A close friend of mine had the lap band done in Dec 2006 and has had great results. Well, tomorrow I go get the blood work/EKG/x-rays, I live 2 hrs from my surgeon so I am doing all of that at my doctors. I am self pay. I was told that if I opted to have the surgery at the Doctors out patient center that I would save $5,000 The only thing is I have to lose some weight prior to surgery. Good news is, if I don't get off what they want then I can reschedule for Dec. Ok, I have a BMI of 55 and they have to have a BMI of 50 in order for me to have it at the out patient center and not the hospital. Which is a great option b/c remember I will be saving 5K!!! Also, I want to shrink my liver. Any suggestions on how to drop the weight? I have been drinking my Water so well that I am floating away!! The doctor suggested no more than 30 carbs a day. Thanks!! Raynae'

    Describe after diet

The first week post op I was on clear liquids. Week 2 was full liquids (basically anything you can drink through a straw). Week 3 was mushies (anything as long as it was mush). I've never used protein shakes (I'm intolerant to powdered milk). I was told to get in 60 grams of protein a day, which I guess varies with your weight/calorie intake (I started at a BMI of 30). I follow the guidelines of eating protein first, then veggies and carbs if you have space. I didn't have a pre-op diet because my BMI was 30 and they won't operate below that weight. BTW I've never been told that rice is off limits.
