Revision from sleeve to RNY
carlacv replied to CandyMel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Having my revision on 8/3 from sleeve to bypass due to hernia. Can I loose weight my doctor says it as fast as the first one but wondering how much on the average. Also, are there any major differences in the recovery? I was pain free in the first one and walking the first day -
HI! I was wondering if anyone has gone from gastric sleeve to re-sleeve to bypass. Yes I know third revision 🥺 however my GERD has become horrible. So my surgeon wants to convert to bypass. My sleeve was done in 2011 and re-sleeve 2015. Need some input from experience!! Thanks!!

I had a gastric sleeve in 2012 and went down to 167. I'm 5'11" so I looked great. I gained weight after the 5 year mark and went up to 235 [I was originally 280] and I was so depressed. I got a revision sleeve. First 2 weeks I lost 5 lbs each and then BAM nothing week 3 and GAINED 3 lbs week 4. I swear to you if I'm even getting 1200 calories once a week that's a lot and I walk for miles. Anyone else have this experience and any words of hope? Hanging by a thread.

I had a revision 6/24/20. My sleeve was in 2013 and tummy tuck/brachioplasty 2014. My revision was by far the most painful! Month out now and feeling good! -
Revision completed

Weighing in this morning at 165.8. I am 2 months post op from my revision from VSG to GP today. I lost 2 lbs this month and am 1 lb away from my lowest weight last summer. I dont expect to lose anymore weight but if I do I will take it as a buffer. I would like to stay under 170 for life !! I had my first episode of too much food the other day. I ate pork steak and being too full made me sick but I could not throw up, so I was miserable for almost 2 hours !! I didnt weigh it but I am guessing it was around 4 to 5 oz. Never again. So I do have restriction with solid protein but I think I ate too fast and by the time my brain caught up it was too late ! The restriction is not the same as with VSG but it is restriction although I cant explain it. I quit tracking my food around the 5th of July because I noticed my weight creeping up a little. For some reason I do better not tracking after I get going, this happened with my VSG. In Jan of 2019 I quit tracking and lost around 10 lbs and kept it off all last summer. The only thing I can think is I was obsessed with food and stayed to focused on it tracking and would eat up to X amount of calories and protein even if I wasnt hungry. I was like oh I didnt get all my calories so I will just have this ect ect ect. I am weird I know, lol. I am still having the burning acid from time to time, but it isnt as often as it was with the sleeve. I am hoping my esophagus is healing but wont know anything until I go see the Dr. for my checkup in August and am scheduled for an EGD. I think I have another hiatal hernia. I say this because sometimes I feel like something is stuck in my throat when eating like before just not as often. All in all I am doing much better then I was at the beginning of this bypass and am getting use to it. -

July 2020 Surgery anyone?

good luck everyone, my revision is Thursday 23.... -
Personally i would have NEVER chosen to have my band (2009) removed just because. If it's not giving you trouble, i would leave it alone. After mine was ER removed 2017 (143lbs) about 2 weeks later, hunger came back with a vengeance. I couldn't get a revision because i "didn't weigh enough". I had no problems until the stomach virus that caused violent vomiting...... NOT the bands fault, NOT my fault.... It wasn't until 2.5 years and a gain of 30lbs that i paid out of pocket 14K to have the sleeve done 8/2019. Starting weight with that 173ish. Today i weigh 124lbs. and even with the weight loss i still preferred the band. I liked the control i had with the band. As far as the removal. That was on a Thursday and i was back at work on Monday. Sleeve was done on a Wednesday and back at work on Monday I say this to all my band friends...... if you feel like your band stopped working for you ... it didn’t, you just stopped using it...

@Barbwired Having reflux after the sleeve is a bit of a coin toss. Some get it. Some don't. Before being sleeved, I had a discussion with my doctor about reflux potential and they always gave me a non-commital answer with a cautionary warning. Ultimately, my doctor and I felt that my reflux was largely related to dietary practices, a general state of obesity, and a small hiatal hernia that I had. A friend of mine had really bad reflux with the lap band to the point she had Barrett's esophagus. Her surgeon actually recommended the sleeve and she's had NO ISSUES with reflux after it. Me, I started getting heartburn within a month of having the sleeve. I immediately started taking Nexium, which took care of the heartburn. Flash forward to about a year. I was waking up with a sore throat that I knew was reflux. It kept getting worse and while I have never woken up choking, I knew the reflux was a problem. I tried every home remedy and every reflux supplement I could find. I modified my eating and behavior to reduce reflux. I sleep on a wedge. When the reflux is at its worst, my wedge can be at about 45°. It's not sleeping "sitting up", but pretty darn close. I saw a gastroenterologist and told him that I wasn't interested in revision to bypass. He offered me a choice between Stretta and Linx. I was in the process of scheduling Stretta when COVID hit. Today, my reflux isn't really that bad. I'm not 100% sure why it's been better, but I'm not looking that gift horse in the mouth. I sleep on my lower wedge and am comfortable with that. I do not eat after 7pm. If I do, I will generally go to bed later than usual or make sure I've had a whole glass of water before bed (flush out the sleeve). I take my Nexium religiously every morning and I take digestive enzymes with my evening meal (THAT seems to have made a BIG difference in my reflux). I have prescription Carafate, but haven't needed it for about 2 months. Best of luck.

Gastric Band Revision To Sleeve
catwoman7 replied to Barbwired's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
just so you know, there are a lot of people around who've had that revision. Have you also considered gastric bypass due to your reflux? A lot of surgeons recommend that for people with reflux as bypass often improve that - whereas sleeve can sometimes make it worse. -
Hello All, Hoping someone who has gone through a gastric band revision to a gastric sleeve can help me. I got the band 10 years ago and for awhile it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I lost 100 pounds and I was working out every day and life was good. Then the reflux started. So bad I spent months sleeping in a chair because lying in bed made me choke with all the stomach acid coming up. They took all the fluid out of my band and now I'm on track to get the band removed and get a gastric sleeve. Very worried about going to a hospital in the middle of the pandemic, but I'm going to be 60 soon and they're telling me that it's pretty much now or never. I'm hoping someone here who has had the experience with a band conversion to a sleeve can give me some advice about how different it is, or if it's similar and how much harder it is than the initial surgery. If there is no one on here who has had a conversion I'd also like to hear from people who got the sleeve and if they'd do it again. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Please Help! Surgery tomorrow, threw up bowel prep
waverunner327 replied to waverunner327's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes, my 5th Lapband, lapband revision die to slippage, lapband removal due to erosion, gastric sleeve and now bypass. Sleeve worked great, but ended up with severe heartburn and damage to my esophagus. Hopefully this will resolve that! -
Marc Bessler at Columbia U
Repeatingthoughts replied to aiross's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
hey I know Marc bessler. He is chilled and straight to the point. I think they should offer more support to their patients. Its a good choice, as you are in good hands with him. I had a procedure done with him. I did go there for my consultation to my revision. However, my gut just said naaaaah, go to Lenox Hill. As mentioned, great doctor! I just don't like the vibe of the office staff, but that's petty lol. Trust your gut and ask him and his NP lots of questions. -
Gained almost all weight back
Camella replied to kgfan1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was sleeved 7 years ago and regained all the weight. I maintained my weight loss for 5 years and then over a 2.5yr period I gained it all back. I am now scheduled to have a revision surgery. I feel a lot of shame about regaining, which I am now learning isn't helpful. What I have learn't from regaining is that I have an addiction to food. For me to be successful going forward I need to focus on what motivates me to overeat, and come at the problem from a psychological perspective. Despite everyone saying that you need to work on your head, after my surgery I thought I would never regain and I could get away with not looking at how I became morbidly obese in the first place. I don't know what is happening for you, but if you haven't already I would possibly look into Overeaters Anonymous or seeking help from a therapist, plus a dietician. -
Revision from sleeve to RNY
Tracyringo replied to CandyMel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It has been very different for me. I didnt feel any restriction after the revision. It was also more painful for me but I had a hiatal hernia repair also. I was given yogurt and strained soup in the hospital the same day as surgery. -
So I first had VBG (banded gastroplasty) in 2001. I lost 100 pounds and then plateaued and stayed at the new weight until 2012. All of the sudden I couldn’t eat anything. I threw up everything I ate. I had an endoscopy which showed scar tissue blockage. I had a revision into a gastric bypass. After that the weight flew off, eventually I had lost a total (including the 100 from the first surgery) 197 pounds. Three pounds away from my goal of losing 200 pounds. Then all of the sudden weight loss stopped. One day I had a few sips of Mtn Dew and I didn’t get sick. So the next day I had a whole glass. Then a whole can. Wow, I had all that sugar and no dumping. Maybe I can have a candy bar. Same result. You see where this is going. Now eight years later I have gained 160 pounds back. It makes me physically sick to think of what I’m putting my body through, let alone the emotional part of feeling like a big fat loser (no pun intended). I cut out the Mtn Dew and am drinking Mtn Dew Zero. I want to cut that out too but can’t find a drink that satisfies me. For those of you who know the feeling of gaining weight back, how are you handling it and do you have suggestions on how to get motivated to start losing? I’m desperate and need feedback. Thanks ahead of time.

So I first had a banded gastroplasty in 2001. I had to have a revision into a gastric bypass in 2012 because of scar tissue issues. I had lost 197 pounds between the two surgeries. I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve gained 150 pounds of that back. I’m not supposed to be able to eat sugar or high fatty foods due to dumping, but I can do both with no problems. I’m wondering if anybody else can eat anything they want after bypass? I’m so frustrated it sucks.

Revision from sleeve to RNY
Tracyringo replied to CandyMel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
If you are doing this for weight loss it will be harder as far as I am concerned. You also may not have the same kind of restriction that you are use to with the sleeve. I will be 2 months out revision to bypass due to GERD on the 22nd. I lost 12lbs the first month and have not lost anymore weight. I can eat more then I could with the sleeve and have no issues with food other then dumping but I stay away from those things since I know what they are. Good luck. -
What should my daily protein goal be?
Pandemonium replied to Happyfamilyof5's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
The program I'm in says 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, which seems kind of on the high side to me, but it worked out well for me pre-op. 9 years ago, the program I was in for my lap band had a goal of 60g of protein, so there was a little bit of whiplash on my expectations when I went pre-op for revision to VSG back in February. I'm 9 days post-op and right now I've been getting 89g of protein a day from the liquid diet I'm on. -

Did you have success after revision? From my understanding, having the revision is not as effective as the first surgery that was done. Did you experience this? -
I need a little help from others that have been approved with CIGNA. THIS Is the most up to date policy (see below). They actually update their policy on the 15th of July so it was revised and updated today. No changes were really made. Anyways, I do meet the requirements but my question is regarding Cigna coverage. Most plans require a monitored 3, 6 or 12 month diet/nutrition/weight loss management through PCP or somewhere similar. Cigna's policy says NOTHING about this, only that "a statement from a physician other than the surgeon, that the individual has failed previous attempts to achieve and maintain weight loss by medical management" - it gives no other requirements or indicators. I called Cigna and two different reps confirmed that it is not required. Although when I went to my Drs appointment they told me they thought it was six months worth of supervised diet! I think they are confused bc of the “within the last six months” part. SIGH! They said they will look into it more So, for those of you that have been approved in the past few months, do I have to have a letter from my primary that recommends bariatric surgery? Would this be the same letter or separate from the on where they state I have made several attempts and failed? And what did you submit/have your PCP write to say that you had failed previous attempts? Thanks in advance for your help! Sorry I just know Insurance’s are so picky! below is link to coverage https://static.cigna.com/assets/chcp/pdf/coveragePolicies/medical/mm_0051_coveragepositioncriteria_bariatric_surgery.pdf
