    Wellbeing Checkpoint! ✅

2 and a half months post op. I survived Thanksgiving, but there wasn't a lot of snacks like there is with Christmas. I did however have a small mince pie and was able to stop at just one so I'm definitely getting better at self-control. Since I'm going to see friends Christmas Eve and Christmas day (only one last day at work until then) I'm bringing a dish that I can eat and I've asked if I can bring a container so I can take home any of my left over portion of turkey etc. I just had a stall that finally broke so I'm feeling confident again.
  2. Stretching your tummy out again is really just a false scare tactic that anti surgery people spread. To stretch your tummy again you would have to eat very large meals regularly for a long time. You’d have to be committed to doing this. You’d have to eat through the discomfort of your restriction. You’d likely vomit to bring up the excess food you’ve eaten at those large meals. Would you want to do this? The stomach muscle will soften in the months after surgery which allows you to eat a little more as the months pass than you can immediately after surgery but the little more gets you to a point your eating around an acceptable & recommended portion size and allows you to get the nutrients in you need. For example after surgery I could only eat about 1/4 - 1/3 of a cup of food. I’m 6 years post surgery & my meal fits on a side plate now so about 3ozs cooked meat and a cup of vegetables to give you an idea.

    Slowing Down 😶‍🌫️

I'm 8 months almost 9 months post opp and have stalled for a month. I'm like maybe 20 pounds from goal weight. I'm not going to stress about it! I hear it happens often and I dropped hella weight extremely fast with all my exercise I do daily. I also started strength training and I know muscle weighs more than fat. I'm gonna give a update in a few months to see where I'm at. I am in a freaking size 12 jeans BTW never f%]%>] Thought I'd ever see that number again! Obesity is a lifelong DISEASE! We got a lifetime! We GOT THIS!

5’ 3” too! But I think my line would say perfectly practical 🤣
  5. Im 3 weeks post op and I just want to eat solid food again. Anything solid. You will be surprised how you feel post-op versus pre-op. Your priorities will change.

    August Surgery buddies

I am 12 weeks/3 months out. It wasn't my best weekend as far as carbs, but I also don't think it was terrible; it was my highest calorie count since surgery at 1500. The next day, I just tired to really focus on protein and low carbs. I did go walk today and got in a little over 2 miles so that feels good to be more active again.

    My body is my enemy.

Exactly @Spinoza. It’s there all the time. Sometimes just a faint little voice whispering in the distance and sometimes shouting at you. Mine has been shouting a lot lately, Had to give myself a kick in the pants and getting it off my chest here has been a help. Always a such a supportive community here. Was actually thinking about asking my GP for a referral to a menopause specialist. She’s been great right from the start about prescribing HRT and putting me on alternatives when issues arose but I have been thinking I need some extra help. I reduced my estrogen a little last week (3 pumps down to 2.5) because of the bloating and sore breasts but now the daily headaches are back. Sigh! I see my bariatric follow up doctor later this month so I’ll what she says as yes, micro dosing had crossed my mind too. The man I was most surprised by with his bone loss was my cousin @SpartanMaker. He was a walker. Walked for miles, twice a day, up & down hills with his dog when he permanently retired. Still don’t understand that but he had a sedentary job which I think probably contributed and probably does for lots of men and women too these days. My dad was a farmer (horticulturalist) on his feet and lifting things every day. His bones were so hard that when he’d have his bone marrow tests for his multiple myeloma, the doctor would stand on the bed or kneel over my dad to put his weight behind the needle to get it into the bone Yikes!

    Introduction/scared crapless

Honestly these are questions best answered by your surgical team and dietitian. The presurgical diets vary widely from surgical team to surgical team, so they're in the best position to advise you on when to start it and what to eat. While as you said, it may not hurt to start early, it also may not really do much either. Keep in mind that the main goal of a liver reduction diet for most patients is to reduce stores of glycogen and water in your liver. 2 weeks is plenty of time to accomplish that. For larger patients, or patients with a fatty liver, they sometimes have to have an extended pre-surgical diet of 4 weeks plus to try to also reduce the excess fat that has been deposited there. This is really a patient by patient thing based on the surgeon's preferences. I for example, had a 21 day liquid only pre-surgical diet.
  9. So glad I found this forum as I'm looking to calm my nerves. My procedure is scheduled next week and my anxiety is BEYOND. 3 years ago I made it until the night before my surgery where I had a total meltdown and canceled the procedure. This time around the process was shorter (less nutrition visits) and I feel like I'm on the speed round, while that may have seemed helpful at first... the countdown has me so frazzled. I'm open to any feedback, tips, suggestions... anything to get me through these next 6 days. Thanks in advance
  10. I never* used them. My plan called for 3 meals per day, each containing 20+ grams of protein through meat (usually). Days 1 - 30 post-op were the same plan pureed. Day 31 forward not pureed any longer. How much protein, of what sort, and how often, is very much a personal decision in consultation with your medical team. Good luck, Tek * Never in normal times. However, when I was binge running, ramping up for marathons, my plan increased from 3 meals per day, to 4, then 5, then 6, then 6 + a protein drink. I fealt like I was eating all day long. I hated it.
  11. Hi everyone, I had my Lap-Band placed in 1999 in Monterrey, Mexico by Dr. Roberto Rombaut, and I’ve had it ever since — over 25 years now. I was a longtime patient of Dr. Brinkley in Maryland, who recently retired. She always performed blind fills for me, and that approach worked perfectly — I’ve maintained success with my band for decades. I typically only need a fill about once every 3 years, so I’m not seeking ongoing adjustments — just an occasional, simple fill when things begin to loosen. I’m aware that my pouch may be slightly distended over time, but I have no interest in surgery or revision. I just want to continue with what has been working. If anyone knows of a caring, experienced provider in the Fairfax, VA or Washington, D.C. area who still performs blind fills, I’d be so grateful for any recommendations. Thank you so much! Beth

    Supplements??

Now, a year and a half out, I take a bariatric multi-vitamin, turmeric, calcium (with vit D3 and K) and omega 3 (as I don't eat fish) daily. I also take a serving of collagen powder most days, added to my coffee. I don't think I will bother continuing with the turmeric when the current supply runs out as I can't say I have seen any benefit to it.

    Supplements??

Hello! I am 4 weeks post-op, and I am curious about what type of supplements people take - such as fiber, calcium, or any others you want to share. Thank you!

    Food Before and After Photos

Interesting that it's called barley in the UK! We have a different grain we call barley, but the word "farro" is really odd here in that technically there are 3 different varieties of wheat berries we call farro: emmer, spelt & einkorn. These are all really ancient wheat grains that predate modern wheat. The word "farro" is obviously a loan word from Italian and we can thank the large Italian immigrant contingent here for it (and for bringing over some tasty ways to prepare it). Regardless, I agree that it's such a wonderful grain and sadly underutilized here in the states. I think our traditional barley is mostly used in soups and stews here, but farro is more common in salads like I made, or sometimes as a side dish similar to how you might make a risotto (another wonderful Italian dish). Sorry for going off on a tangent a bit, but I'm a huge food history geek and find it fascinating how what we eat has evolved and changed over time!

    Any 50yo or older?

I turn 50 in a little over 2 weeks. 1 week before my surgery.
  16. The time has come in my journey where I have had a little weight gain - about 3lbs in 10 days. I know it is to be expected it is just a little frustrating! For reference, my typical day of eating includes some protein porridge for breakfast, a sandwich or a salad with some chicken/avocado for lunch, some soy marinated boiled eggs as a snack, and then for dinner is usually some form of meat for protein, some veg and some carbs (I'll eat the veg/protein first). I try to aim for 2.5L of water a day - usually manage anywhere from 1.5-2L if I am honest! I do drink tea & coffee, and I go to the gym 3-4 times a week, mostly doing a range of weight training, and also 20-30 mins of cardio: my go to cardio at the moment is on the treadmill, on a 12 incline, speed at 4.8-6 and walking for a set amount of time. ANYWAY - just feeling a little disheartened!!

    A Change is Coming...

Post op day 3. Feeling 300% better than yesterday! Still sore but I danced in the kitchen this morning and went for several short walks. I even read for about an hour in the sun. The weather down here is phenomenal!! Still trying to find a good position for sleeping. Being on my back sucks. I think the worst part is that I have to get these compression socks back on. Ughhhhhh
  18. Hi lovelies, I hope you’re all doing well? You were all so supportive with the question I asked a few weeks ago that I thought I would come here and see if you have any advice for me now! As of tomorrow I am eight weeks out from the gastric bypass procedure. I have lost quite a bit of weight (2 stone) which I’m absolutely delighted about (and people are starting to notice which has been a really good feeling). However, I must have THE most stubborn self sabotaging streak because I have started to drink alcohol again (and not just on special occasions) as well as not following the food rules and not exercising. I can’t understand why I’m being like this because my family are so happy that I’ve done this and have been so supportive, and my friends (even though they don’t know about the operation are really starting to notice) so WHY am I doing this to myself? I just wondered if you guys knew of a reason I may have hit the wall so early (I really do not want to fail) and especially if you have any advice, book recommendations apps or anything that I might be able to do to help me get back on track and find my way again. Really appreciated as always thank you xx

    New to the group!

You look amazing, well done and good luck with the surgery. I look forward to hearing about your plastics journey in the coming weeks and months.
  21. Congratulations on your new you! My RNY surgery was August 12, 2021. My biggest fear before WLS was maintenance. I kept loosing until 2yrs, 3mo. There were a number of stalls, a couple of gains, but maintenance isn’t that bad. The stats are in the file on here, but I lost 75lbs before surgery, and 75lbs after. My tops are the same size as when I was 5’7” and 140lbs at age 20 so I think I’m there (I’ve aged and shrunk, and acquired a load of skin since then. It all hangs around my belly apron and above my knees.) I’m 56yrs old and love being active and staying active is my passion. The trick is to find activities you love, then let yourself obsess over them! The secret to my maintenance is smell. I have wicked allergies and noticed I loose weight easily when I can’t smell anything. So, I “forget” to take my nasal spray, or wear a mask with peppermint scent in it. Viola, 5-10 lbs falls off in a week. Thankfully, I also dump on sugar so I don’t need to do the smell trick often :)
  22. You are hot! rock on with your bad self! My style has changed for sure, I would wear only bootcut jeans, loose tops, never tank tops, never shorts, wore a ton of makeup. I am 36 and a mom of 3 younger children, so my everyday I am more simple, mom jeans and a crop top with my vans/converse, or I will wear skinny jeans and a tank top. I will wear shorts and crop top/ tank/fited top, summer dresses. Minimal makeup, just my lash extensions and eyebrows (unless I'm going out or having a date night then I will glam up!) I am back to brown hair which I feel suits me more. Also with my new enhancement I feel sexier when I wear tops. Going swimming I will wear a bikini (GASP!) I feel like dressing up everyday for work and to actually try!

    NHS Tier 4 Pre-Op Question

I'm glad you don't have the 12 week milk diet. It was difficult and I slipped up occasionally, but it was helpful for losing weight and shrinking the liver. Because of the 12 week diet, I lost 12.9 kg (28lbs) in those three months. My NHS trust just flat out said "no ozempic" At the time, it was because it hadn't quite been approved for the NHS But I wouldn't have wanted that anyway as it would mean injections for the rest of my life and a lot of people have endless diarhoea on those meds. I had one session with an NHS psychologist and one group session. I don't really know about what tiers I had. I asked for a referral for the weight loss team, then I had an information session which was via zoom where each the nurse, dietician and psychologist gave some advice about the programme. Then I had an individual session with each one. Once I was approved, I had fortnightly appointments with the medical team to check how my weight loss was going with the milk diet, pre surgery vitals and then the surgery itself. I had a one month and 6 month follow up with the surgical nurse. Next month, I have a phone call with the psychologist. It sounds to me like you are getting a lot more psychological support than I did, which I think is great. It really makes a big difference.
