Struggling with weight loss 3 yrs post VSG
LindaJean46 replied to LindaJean46's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I’m not interested in revision either. I’ m trying my best to get these 15lbs off but I feel like I take 2 steps forward and 3 steps back! It’s been that way my whole life but I refuse to give up! I’m adding this HIIT training ( high intensity interval training) workouts and resistance bands to my workouts to see if that makes a difference... -
Struggling with weight loss 3 yrs post VSG
Hopefulmommy44 replied to LindaJean46's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi there! I'm with you on the struggle. I had vsg in Fall 2012, lost 120 lbs. Had babies in 2014 and 2016, so I never even made it to the 3 yr mark at my goal weight 😫. I've so far lost 40 pounds, on 1200 calories per day, and I'm starting a reset today. I never thought to try Phentermine, but I will be making an appt to get some this week! The struggle is very real! We can encourage each other. I am not at all interested in revision, at this time. -
Bariatric Weight Loss Major Turning Point Decision
BigSue replied to Hope to Resolve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I first looked into WLS about 15 years ago. At that time, gastric bypass was the only option from most surgeons, and I was scared away (and talked out of it by my family) due to the potential complications. It was mostly being done as an open procedure; the surgeon I talked to was doing it laparoscopically only for patients with a BMI below 40. When I started looking into it again this year, I was leaning toward the gastric sleeve because it seemed like a less extreme, less scary version of WLS. But when I went to my consultation with the surgeon, he pushed me toward gastric bypass, mainly because I started with a very high BMI (60) and gastric bypass tends to result in slightly more weight loss. The more I have looked into it, the more I became convinced that gastric bypass was the way to go. Maybe it was just confirmation bias since that's what the surgeon thought I should do, but I learned that the complications are actually not that different between sleeve and bypass. They are both done laparoscopically and have relatively quick recoveries. You have to take vitamins either way. Dumping is more common with bypass, but could happen with either. I have never had acid reflux, so I wasn't too concerned about that, but I have seen a lot of people on this forum end up with GERD after having the sleeve, and a lot of people getting revisions from sleeve to bypass. I saw a surgeon on YouTube (Dr. Vuong) say that everyone should get the sleeve because you can always get it revised to bypass if necessary, but to me that's crazy -- I don't want to go through a second surgery! I'm 3.5 weeks out from bypass so the jury's still out on whether it was a good decision, but that was my decision process. -

@Luv2cruz Unless i read over it, No one has asked a few very important questions. What is your height? What was your beginning weight? Are you logging your food? Are you exercising? What does your diet look like on a daily bases? The reason, if you have less to lose, you will tend to lose a little slower. A person who had 300lbs to lose will lose it faster that say a person that has 100lbs to lose. My story is a little different than some.... but anywho.... After being here for over 10 years i have seen and read many different stories. I have also experienced it with some very close friends. I've had friends like myself who had the band (lost 2017 gained 30lbs). Lost there band and have gained it back or revised to a different WLS. Some with success and some without. I have a few that had only the sleeve and either never lost or gained it all back. I've even had a few that had GB and either gained some or all of the weight back. I do have a few friends that had the band and have kept their weight off for over 10 years. The point is.... ALL WLS have their goods and bads. Ups and downs. It's how you as a person handles YOUR journey. (ok just read your last post, so i'm taking out this part) I would start at the begging, look within yourself. Maybe seek a counselor (it's helping me). Otherwise, i would start tracking your food (if you aren't already). Get yourself a good exercise program (even if it's just walking more and faster). I wish i had journaled.... I write myself inspiring quotes on my bathroom mirror. I know you didn't want to hear it, but its true and hard not to do... But, try to not compare yourself to others. I compared myself to others all the time, then someone years ago told me that..... So now i have on my mirror..... Envy is the thief of happiness. I wish you only good thoughts on your journey. -
Band to Sleeve success...anyone?!?
BayougirlMrsS replied to Redesigned_Curves's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
worked for me..... I was a successful band-member for nearly 8 years. Never had any issues till march 2017. I got a bad stomach virus and threw up violently and slipped my band. I was my worst fear with the band.... LOSING HER. So i went on through life... divorce, dating, meeting someone else, moving out of state..... 2017-2019 on my own with no WLS. For years i tried to get a revision and no dr. would do it. My insurance didn't cover the band removal nor a revision. But i still looked ... same answer over and over.. "you don't weight enough". Over those years I gained 30lbs back. No matter what i did and menopause hit and wow... Now i've gained 30lbs. I was going to go to Mex to have the MGB. But as luck would have it, i found a dr 10 min from my work that did WLS. Went in for a consult and he agreed to do the sleeve..... That was nearly 1 year ago. 11/10/2009 band SW: 232lbs. size 18-20 pants, shirt 2xl (or bigger), bra 44G, shoe 7-7.5 (143lbs) 3/23/2017 band removal: 143lbs. size 6, shirt large, bra 34H, shoe 6.5-7 8/28/2019 sleeved: 173lbs. size 10, shirt large, bra 36G/H, shoe 7 (14k out of pocket) Today: 120lbs, size 0, shirt sm/med, bra 32FF, shoe 6-6.5 -
Bariatric Weight Loss Major Turning Point Decision
JRT Mom replied to Hope to Resolve's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Hope to Resolve Your story sounds a lot like mine. Long story short--12 year old lap band slipped, caused hiatal hernia, constant sliming with no fill in it, etc. Had it taken out and revised to bypass in one surgery. My only regret was I wasted 12 years futzing around with the band. Your concerns about vitamins are valid, but easily addressed with multivitamins and calcium supplements. Hair loss is likely to occur with both the sleeve and bypass but is not as terrible as say chemotherapy--usually only YOU notice it, and it will grow back. Dumping is totally avoidable by not eating sugary or fatty foods, and I consider it a plus since it makes it easier to avoid potential trigger foods for fear of dumping! One definite plus is my a1c and glucose are now totally normal, and that's without ANY metformin at all! I was on 1000 mg a day and now take none. I think the bypass has better statistics for resolving diabetes than the sleeve. Whatever you decide, good luck, and keep us posted! -
6 yrs post op - weight gain - seeking support
mi75 replied to Domika03's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am also a 2014 vet. I too had some regain. Here's the story for me...about 18 months after my op I left a long term career position, took a night, started grad school, switched to a leadership job, lost a parent unexpectedly, graduated grad school, went back for PhD, and more. When I had surgery, one of the main issues was a health problem that was considered reversible. In 2017 after some regain, my GI doc gave me some sobering news that it was returning. I had a serious 'come to Jesus' talk with myself. I went online looking for solutions. I sought my team. I went to some support group meetings (even online). I met with my nut. I met with a surgeon. After being given the option of a RNY revision, I realized that I KNEW WHAT TO DO, AND I HAD THE TOOL...I went full on Keto and never looked back. I am now at my lowest ever. I lost all the regain and then some. I realized through the process that FOR ME, I must always identify as a bariatric patient. I will NEVER be able to eat 'everything in small amounts'. I will always struggle. Surgery saved my life, yes, but it didn't fix my weight permanently- it did part of it but the major work was up to me. I would suggest seeking out support from your surgical team, support group, nut, psych, etc. ANYONE who is part of a bariatric practice. And start from scratch. Dense protein. Water. Shakes if necessary. Skip the 'reset' and all those things. Obviously regain comes from EATING so you have to relearn how to eat as a bariatric patient. It is absolutely possible but there are many of us here on the same timeline as you who have already been through this and are willing to help! -

Lap band vs sleeve...help
ms.sss replied to Blyss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had the sleeve done and went from a BMI 43 to BMI 21 in about 7 months. But honestly, for the most part, the success (or non-success) of weight loss has a lot more to with the person vs. the type of surgery chosen. Stick to your plan (and barring any complications), we all end up in the same place. Lapband has been falling out of favour, but yes, there are still surgeons who perform them, and alot of their patients have found success with them (and others who have not). The one thing about lapband though is that the device itself can truly fail (in the sense that it slips), while with the others (vsg, rny, ds, etc.) rarely fail, it is likely more the individual that that failed the tool. As far as sleeve goes, I also +1 all the other posters who say that if you even have a hint of GERD, or reflux, pre-surgery, it’s probably in your best interest to forego this type of surgery and go another route. I had ZERO reflux issues, and since surgery I’ve been on PPI’s. I’ve been trying (again and again) to wean myself off if them, but no luck so far. i take 30mg every other day. I’m lucky that it is controlled by medication, but I’ve read many of others who are not. With that said, however, I’m still extremely satisfied with my sleeve results (reflux or not). In the end, go with your gut. You may very well not exacerbate your occasional reflux. And even if you do, there is always a revision. But do discuss with your surgeon. Good Luck! -
Band to Sleeve success...anyone?!?
Redesigned_Curves posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I’m scheduled for my revision surgery on the 27th. I was successful with the band, but ended up having to have to fluid removed d/t complications. I’ve now gained all my weight back. I feel like everything I read is people saying the revision didn’t work for them. I’m just looking for some SUCCESS stories, because I’m starting to feel really discouraged. -
The bariatric surgeon ordered the scope but a gastroenterologist did it. I was under sedation when they did it so all I remember was having a slightly sore throat when I woke up. I do not believe I had xrays with contrast at the time of this complaint but truthfully with the complications I had going on some of the procedures and tests timeframes get a little blurred. I can only speak for myself and my experience and it took almost a year for me to get back to feeling like myself and I will be honest I wasn’t the best about making sure I reported all my symptoms and following up with my team where I probably should have. I attribute that to me being so used to health issues being blamed on my weight that I just figured it would eventually get better. I was speaking with someone the other day and was asked if I would recommend wls to others and I honestly answered yes but with the caveat that they were warned to report anything that doesn’t feel right to them to the team. After my revision that’s what my surgeon advised my husband and myself They were like don’t feel like you are being a bother please if something doesn’t feel right or is bothering you call the office it’s easier to document and correct when we know as soon as possible.

I am scheduled on August 27th. I start my preop diet this Thursday. I am having a revision from Band to Sleeve. -
I had a sleeve surgery in July 2019 and within the first two weeks it felt like I had a piece of hamburger stuck in my throat and could not get it cleared. It stayed that way for months. I ended up with additional issues that caused me to have a revision from a sleeve to a gastric bypass in February of 2020. (I am not saying you need to have anything changed just explaining my journey). In the process to having the revision my dr did a scope of my throat and almost immediately after that the closed up feeling of my throat and “stuck” food feeling went away and has not bothered me again. I would strongly suggest you speak to your team and explain what you are going through. I can Not emphasize enough the importance of getting your nutrition in and know how difficult that is going to be if you can’t swallow.

Gastric Bypass Peeps: Would you do it again?
MeliE82 replied to Barbwired's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I know exactly that feeling ! I have decided to go with bypass because of the reflux issues I have and I have Esophagitis as well , I had initially wanted to revise to sleeve but after getting my Esophagitis diagnosis from my gastroenterologist, and with the research I did , it didn’t make sense to me to go with the sleeve . It took a lot of research , talking with a counselor about me weighing my options to have made the decision to go with bypass . I am having surgery on 8/13/2020 . I am looking forward to this new step in my journey . But I’m fully committed and ready for it ! -
I’m currently on my second round of pre-op diet as I had a VSG in December 2019 and am having a revision to RNY in a few days but over the last year I’ve amassed quite a collection of protein powder and drinks. I’ve gone through 2 other 2lb tubs of the syntrax nectars and I’ve lost count of the protein shakes. But yeah, I may be hoarding protein powder and shakes. Anyone else do this? I need to know I’m not alone. 😂

Reached intermediate WL goal!
California Guy posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just passed my intermediate goal weight of 208 lbs. I'm celebrating this milestone today. My final goal weight is set at a realistic 190 lbs. The intermediate goal of 208 pounds is significant since that is my lowest weight in over 20 years. Also, with a BMI under 30, it is the weight I am no longer obese. I am classified as overweight. Results came so fast. I weighed 300 lbs. at the beginning of the year. It has only been 2 1/2 months since my revision SADI-S surgery. I cleaned out my closet since I couldn't wear any of my clothes anymore. Finding nutritious food I love to eat has made this so easy. Nearly all my meals have been prepared at home. I created a set of original recipes. Today's lunch was ground turkey meat tacos. Dinner will be stir fry cashew chicken. Two factors that motivated me to make these changes are resolved with my weight loss. My blood pressure is now always at a healthy level. Pain in my hip joint has diminished by over 90%. -
I don't think you have anything to lose by continuing to lose weight without revision surgery. It's definitely not impossible, people lose large amounts of weight without any surgery - and you already have the sleeve. Surgery isn't a magic bullet and either way, you're going to need to put in the work around nutrition and exercise. Is there any concern that your sleeve has lost all of its restriction? Honestly, it sounds like you are doing really well - you're already a third of the way back to where you want to be. How long did it take you to lose the 40 lbs? If you are still struggling in 6-12 months, you can always reassess and consider revision again. But given how well you are doing, there's no harm in continuing your weight loss journey without the expense and pain of another surgery - particularly when you have young kids to look after. That's just my two cents (from a random person on the internet). Do whatever is right for you! Wishing you all the best either way! xx

How did you pick your doctor?
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to imlosingit2020's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine worked with my dad for over a year to try and save his leg before they ultimately amputated. I’m thoroughly convinced he saved my dad’s life. I actually met him at one of my dad’s post op appointments 2 years before I needed him. Fast forward to April 2019 and I need an appendectomy and he’s the surgeon I chose for that. At my post op he invited me to a bariatric seminar and he did my sleeve in December 2019. He’s also my surgeon for my RNY revision this coming Tuesday. I don’t think I could trust another surgeon with what he does. -

Wow ... I am so happy I came back to a forum because I literally feel like your story mirrors mine . I read your story and teared up because I had been battling Esophagitis and everything that comes with the reflux for so long I thought it was only me . I am having a revision to gastric bypass on the 13th of March . I first wanted to do a revision to sleeve last year but when we realized how bad my Esophagitis was and reflux I decided the best choice for me was going to be bypass . I understand the apprehension with things like hairloss and such but I have prayed and mentally prepared myself for it.... for a person that had always used her full head of hair as a huge security blanket that was a big leap forward . It’s about healing and being healthier for my self , my daughter and my family . Let me Know your thoughts ! We are all in this together ! -
How did you pick your doctor?
Foxbins replied to imlosingit2020's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I picked my sleeve surgeon because he was the president of the Mexican Bariatric Association and had done more than 3000 sleeves. I loved my sleeve and didn't want to revise to RNY, which is what the first surgeon I consulted said was the only choice to treat my GERD. My gastroenterologist referred me to my eventual surgeon, who had a lot of ideas about how he could address the GERD and still preserve my sleeve. As I was going through testing, though, we found some other conditions. I ultimately had RNY but at least I knew we had explored lots of other options. As for you, what surgery are you having? A sleeve is less technically demanding than RNY, but still you want somebody experienced operating on you. I'd go ahead and ask how many bariatric surgeries and what kinds they have done. Surgeons are used to people asking that question. -

Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Luv2cruz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My case isn’t typical. I developed a hernia in March that has lead to some severe GERD, esophagitis and inflammation because of it. I’m actually having revision surgery this coming Tuesday to fix everything. I do agree with the others. While your surgeon and nutritionist may say 600 calories a day, try adding an extra 100-200 calories and see if that helps. Stalls happen a lot. We just have to figure out what works for us to break through them. -
I'm so frustrated!!! Vsg to DS revision
California Guy replied to Goldy6575's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
In 2013 I requested a DS. My surgeon explained he does the surgery in two parts. He does the VSG first and we see if that produces the desired results. If not, the revision surgery is available. My two surgeries were almost 7 years apart. VSG produced good results by 1 year post OP then I regained weight. I believe my insurance required 5 years between weight loss surgeries. Usually the revision surgery needs to be medically necessary due to high BMI, acid reflux or comorbidities. -
having trouble breaking 400 calories
California Guy replied to joleza's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No, I wasn't hungry at all. I had my sleeve done 7 years ago. Just did the revision to modified DS this year. The liquid diet reset my stomach and I was surprised to feel full with such small portions.
