So, I've posted comments about making broth-bases in a few threads. This is a correction/ revision to what I've posted about making beef broth from bones. I posted that I don't skim the fat off the broth after boiling, because there's a negligible amount per serving in the finished product (Soup or au jus) if you make a big vat. It's been a long time since I've made beef broth, so I thought since I've been posting about it and it's that time of year, I'd make some. I do save and freeze steak bones and when making beef broth from these bones, it's true, the total fat is negligible per serving when making big vats from these. Since I don't eat that many steaks and my household has shrunk with the kids on their own, there's just not enough bones to make beef broth with- so I buy marrow bones. *HERE'S THE CORRECTION: I'd forgotten, marrow bones do have a LOT of fat that leeches into the broth. I definitely recommend skimming off the fat at the end of beef marrow-bone, broth-production, before freezing. Sorry if I misled anyone. It wasn't intentional.

Well, today is the day. SURGERY DAY. It's more complicated than when I had the gastric sleeve because not only are they doing a revision from sleeve to bypass, they are removing my entire lower and mid stomach (the part that is bypassed) because that's where all my polyps develop. It's a 2 hour surgery, and I was told I'll be in recovery for about an hour after. It's like having 2 bariatric surgeries in 1, so the recovery/healing/down time will be worse than my original surgery. I'll be in the hospital for 2 nights, so I'll be home sometime on Friday the 30th. That sucks, and is really annoying (I hate hospitals) but I know it's necessary and will be worth it. I can't wait to get my life back. Working out, feeling good, no more in and out of the hospital, being ME again. This has been a looooong road, but I'm finally almost at the finish line. It's gonna be awesome when I hit my weight loss goal (I'm 70 pounds away and speaking it into existence now that THIS TIME NEXT YEAR I will be at my goal weight). So wish me luck, and I'll see ya'll on the flip side

Preexisting Gerd before and after Sleeve
MasR posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, Im new here as this is my second post in 2 days. I have a question regarding GERD. Im 32 been pretty much overweight all my life and the small time (about 10 years ago) when i was in great shape, i did not suffer from gerd. I also have a small hiatal hernia that may or may not need to be repaired. I do not take medicine for the Gerd, it really doesn't bother me to be honest. I have been reading that preexisting GERD prior to the sleeve can worsen. So much so, that many times the surgeon will suggest a revision to the bypass. The bypass scares the life out of me and i just dont want to do it. No disrespect to bypass patients, But I rather not surgery than get a bypass Studies can only show you so much and Id really like to hear some of your first hand experiences. Did it get worse, Better, same? Also, did any of you get the LINX installed? If so, howd did that go? -
I am have my band to sleeve revision on Aug 15 th I need a buddy. I will traveling alone. Dr Lopez and Osuna

I had the same problem with a massively dilated esophagus. Got the fill removed and it got better. Unfortunately I had to have a revision anyway because of ongoing reflux problems.

I'm also a band to sleeve, my surgery was 6/18. My dr has ok'd really soft foods 4 days after surgery. I didn't have a lot of scar tissue but my port was the issue and that incision site/area is still tender. I feel so much better now that the band is gone how about you?I feel so much better now that's gone too. I forgot what it felt like for food to actually hit my stomach. I can't believe you had a revision and your doctor has already ok'd soft foods. Only Soups that can go through a strainer and Protein drinks for me till next Tuesday!

Fight, fight, fight and fight
SeattleLady replied to SeattleLady's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The latest, my GERD is getting better by my change in eating habits. Most days, I feel like a perpetual science experiment! I am afraid to eat. I don't want to have acid. My first visit to the nutritionalist is this week. I will have a clear plan at that point. If I am revised? It will occur in late March. Time will surely tell! @@Oregondaisy I have had a lot of experience in this area. I had spondylothesis in my lower lumbar. My disc was almost completely worn away and my L5 had actually fallen creating an unstable lumbar. The nerve was actually trapped caused severe nerve pain. In 2001 I had a lumbar fusion of my l5/S1. Lumbar is a huge surgery and takes a very long time to recover. I was left with nerve damage that ran down my right leg. It almost ended my career because we could not get the pain under control. Many many epidural injections, physical therapy and narcotics and I was still in severe pain but my spine was stable. I wanted a non narcotic solution and finally learned about an internal neuro stimulator. We tested it externally and immediately when we turned it on the pain down my leg improved so significantly I began to cry. Two weeks later I had it installed surgically. That Neurostimulatoe gave me my life back! That was in 2005. I went so many years in severe pain before I found a solution. I have recently had a 3 level spinal fusion in my cervical spine. This too was a huge surgery. Because of the years of recovery needed for lumbar fusion I was terrified to have another fusion and waited until the problem became required due to cord compression. Cervical fusion although painful is definately not as bad as lumbar fusion. Before I had my lumbar fusion a neurosurgeon told me that if I was his wife, mother or daughter he would recommend that I wait until it was absolutely required to survive before having lumbar fusion. One fusion can change everything about how your spine operates causing more damage down the road. He warned me that this is such a long recovery and if you think you know pain now, you definately will after. I really wish I would have listened to him because he was right. I would try every single alternative more than once before moving forward. I wish I had know about the neurostimulator first, it would have made my pain so much more comfortable that I would have been able to live with it without lumbar fusion. I ended up having that lumbar fusion and then a revision before I found a tolerable solution. I have done a ton of research on this subject. I truly believe that my whole spine has been effected by my decision to move forward with lumbar fusion. I now have severe arthritis in my T vertebraes as well as the deterioration of my cervical spine. I still have lower lumbar pain every day but that neurostimulator finally broke through that nerve pain in my leg. Lastly I would say, epidural injections are definately worth it as long as you get results. I used them for 12 years to control my cervical spine pain and when the wear got too bad they stopped working, that is when I knew it was time to think about fusion in my neck. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Just make sure you manage your expectations. Just because they are doing surgery, does not mean that nerve pain will go away. You may have to find other solutions. I choose not to live on narcotics and have learned there are many more options out there to deal with my pain. I was living on narcotics for over 10 years and honestly they didn't even really help. I know I will live with back pain for the rest of my life, I also know that the more I exercise the better I feel. I no longer let it rule me. I definately did at one point in my life. I will say a prayer that everything works out great for you in whatever you decide. My post is not meant to scare you, but More to make sure you research like crazy before deciding, Best of luck and feel free to reach out directly with questions.

acid reflux band to sleeve
stacielynntate replied to f1stborn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was banded in 2008 and got 24/7 acid reflux in 2011 after having my son. Only time no issue was when my band was empty. So got revision on 6/18 and a month out and no issues thank god. It's so nice to not have to deal with it. -
Fears with Revision Surgery
curlyRNYgirl999 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I wanted to share some of my fears with revision surgery. I am only two weeeks away from my operation and I am starting to get nervous about my life afterwards. I figured I could share my fears along with others and hopefully get some support as well. So here goes. These are my top fears about revision surgery: I wont lose any weight or hardly any. I wont be able to follow doctor orders and may cause myself complications. I will come out of surgery only to find they couldn't do it after all. I will not feel as much restriction as I did with the band. I will only lose weight for a short time like with the band, and then start gaining it all back I have more fears but these are the most prominent. I guess this whole journey with the band has just scarred me in some ways and made me doubt the power of surgery, even though I know from seeing my friends and family who have done it that it works. I guess I worry since I chose the band first, things wont be the same for me and it wont work as well. Share your fears with me. -
Fears with Revision Surgery
SoccerMomma73 replied to curlyRNYgirl999's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So, I'm the girl that woke up after band removal only to discover they couldn't do my revision to RNY....too much damage and inflammation, too risky to revise at that time. Six months later I got my RNY. The first few weeks in between totally sucked. I was an emotional mess. Mad at my body, mad at myself, mentally a mess. But time moved on and next month I'm 1 year post RNY. I have lost much slower than my bariatric surgery virgin counterparts. But I've lost and it has been so much easier than my band ever was. At 5'6 and 195', I'm about 40 pounds from a healthy weight. I can eat small amounts of almost anything. I never get stuck, slime, throw up. I never have pain. I do dump and still get random bouts of nausea from time to time. I no longer feel starved or deprived. It has been fabulous. You'll do fine and are normal to have fears . You'd be crazy not to!!!!! -
For me I could not lose all of it on my own my highest weight was 480 I got town to 430 on my own . Could not get past 430. Every time I did I shot back up to 430 . I got tired of going up and down with my weight .i use to weigh 220 . I was hit head on in 91 and shot up to 484 fast . So getting in the gym was very hard to do . I chose the lap band first mainly cause insurance , and it went good . I lost 100 pounds on it but it was slipping and well the removed it in 3 months of putting it in . They put it back in cause I was scared of the by pass but I did not lose any weight after they stuck it back and it was slipping agin . So I went in to see dr suh and we revised it to the sleeve I am just 3 weeks out I had surg on may 30 I have lost close to 30 pounds so far . I seem to be constipated but I don't eat much . I had bad heart burn a week after surg and I had to end up mixing the Pepcid with nexium twice a day and it seems to work . Other then that I am not hungry . I just start cardio at the gym a week ago . But I am excited I was scared but I was getting to the point where I was walking worse everything was getting harder to do . And I just got tired I can do it on my own and keep it off . I think this is a great tool to get you down so you can maintain and feel better it takes work .. The surg is not a walk in the park but it was worth it for me . I am trying to get to 220 back where I was and hope I will keep it off with the new life style I am moving into .

Revision after only a year of Gastric Sleeve
nidvia posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I had my gastric sleeve in March 22,21. My recovery was great and I didn’t had any pain or complications at all. I have lost like 60lbs so far. The problem is I have severe GERD. Since the day of my surgery I been taking PPI, now twice a day . Few days ago I had my one year visit with my surgeon and I he suggested that I should do a revision because taking the PPI long term is not ideal and he said that small percent of patients with gastric sleeve end up with severe GERD and I was one of them. That the only cure is the revision. I think is too soon but the regurgitation in the middle of the night are a nightmare to the point that I have to sleep sitting down. Have anyone one in here had a revision so soon? Sorry for my English is not my first language. -
Lose Weight And Keep It Off
Creekimp13 replied to Coach Hayward's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Though regain and difficulty with maintenance is very common....Few people who are struggling with regain stick around and post on this board. Most folks here are new to surgery and excited about possibilities, going through the process...high energy. You will see a few people talking about regain on the veteran's forum and revision boards. If you want statistical information about percentages of people who reach goal, regain, what is considered "a success" in the industry...talk to your bariatric surgeon. They are excellent, tough questions that you really should ask. -
I had the sleeve in 2013 and am in the process of looking to revise to a DS. I am extremely worried about the insurance portion. I know "everyone's insurance is different" I get it. Having been through the insurance stuff before I do realize it's case by case etc. I have Aetna and I did read the policy jacket and all that. I just want to know is there anyone on here that was approved for a second surgery and if so what is your story? I have had a little regain but been stalled over a year and a "twisted" sleeve it looks like cobblestones on top of each other. My BMI is 37. NO COMORBIDIES (sp?) Has anyone been approved in a similar situation?

Physiological Changes After WLS
summerset replied to IveGotThePower's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Very interesting, thank you. I'm a revision from band to MGB because of reflux issues and a migrating band and I have to say it is very different now! Wish I had done this way, way, WAY sooner! (I was afraid of having surgery again. Should have done it sooner but it's always easy to say that after everything went ok.) I wonder how it will feel after being 2, 3, 7 years out. Definitely worth a quote. -
Insurance Approval For Revision
Nurse Jen replied to Myskinnydreams0605's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I went to my first seminar in May 2012, I was done with the process and approved by my doc and insurance by July but had to put off surgery due to work. I had my surgery September 25, I starred at 364lbs and I am down to 300. I lost 40lbs before surgery and have lost 24 after. Mine was not a revision, I havent had any other weight loss surgery besides the bypass. I am sure you will do great, just stick to the diet and try not to get upset if something makes you sick.....I got upset the first time because I was doing everything right, my doc was awesome though telling me how our body is adjusting and that it might not like something right away but to try again later. -
Insurance Approval For Revision
Vicki Loichinger replied to Myskinnydreams0605's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I too had anthem BCBS and I was approved on Friday. The approval process took about three weeks and they did ask for some more paperwork in the middle. But really I think it went very well. And if all the info from all my docs had been sent in the first time it would have been even faster. So hopefully tomorrow I will get a surgery date I have had my lap band for seven years and revising to the RNY. I have no horror stories about my lap band it just didn't help me lose all the weight I needed and even when losing weight the diabetes and asthma did not improve. I am kinda putting all my eggs in the RNY basket and hoping I am one of the 80% that the RNY drastically changes the diabetes. Wishing you the very best. -

what are the most common reasons people get their band removed?
Lady VS replied to BQT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I went in thinking I'd be banded for life. That was my plan. However, I have been nauseated and vomiting off and on throughout the year which has made my band slip. Even though I have no saline for the past 8 months, I'm still nauseous. I'm not as big as I was when I was first banded. I don't have acid reflux, my esophagus is fine, however, last year, it was slightly swollen. I am currently prepping my body for this revision surgery I'm having next week. what are the most common reasons people get their band removed?
JRT Mom replied to BQT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sorrynametaken, I could have written your post. My story is exactly the same. Mine is also 10 years old, and even with no fill in it I'm struggling to get food down. The barium swallow doesn't show any problems with dilation or slippage, but I still slime and vomit every other meal. I thought it was going to last a lifetime but it's so stressful being hungry but dreading that next meal, and my surgeon thinks the stoma will eventually totally close off so even water can't pass, so I'm having it removed with a revision to a RNY. I know I'll never eat an average size meal again but I'm OK with that as long as I can do so without dread!
