I am 14 weeks out since surgery
Margie122 replied to Fairiefyre's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I thiink 40 pounds in 14 weeks is an amazing result! You should be proud. Why can you only keep down salads and soft foods? Is your fill too tight? Maybe you are craving sugar because you are not getting enough calories and/or Protein? I'm not banded yet, but hope to be soon. I would call your surgeon's office. Best of luck to you! Margie -
How many surgeons did you consult before making a final decision on who to perform the surgery?
Kindle replied to QueenA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did a bunch of research before narrowing my list to 3 surgeons... 2 here in Idaho and 1 in Mexico. The patient coordinators of the two in Idaho were arrogant bitches who wouldn't answer any of my questions until I set up appointments with them first. I explained I was over 3 hours away from them, and just wanted some basic info (how many VSGs has he done, what's his complication rate, what are the pre and post op requirements, etc) but they refused to help me. My contact at the Mexico office was extremely helpful and exchanged dozens of emails and phone calls answering all of my questions. After more research, I discovered my Mexico option was by far the most experienced with a complication rate 1/100th of the US average, so that's who I went with. The best decision ever...great care and great results. -

I'm afraid that it will be something like pasta/baked ziti etc. I could just ask her too Also, I'm not talking about drinking all night, I'm talking about a little champagne especially during toasting time. I'd be happy with salad at this point and eat some Protein before we get there. -
Pre surgery weight loss tips needed
honk replied to new@52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to speak with your doctors' office to know for sure what they want. The 12 pounds loss may be expected before any liquid diet. My experience was that I was told to loose 30 pounds before the surgery. In general my doctor did not require me to do a presurgery diet. My surgery ended up being postponed for other healther reasons but in the end I lost about 54 pounds presurgery. I can tell you what I did. First, if you are not on an exercise program start one. A mistake that over weight people often do is thinking that they have to start an intense program suddenly. If you can do 10 minutes the first couple days that's fine. Personally I swim; it burns lots of calories and your joints are'nt getting a lot of stress all of a sudden. You can even buy waterproof MP3 players which makes swimming way more fun. The first 7 months presurgery I ate a conservative diet and exercized daily. The month prior to surgery I went to 2 Protein drinks a day (made with milk, about 200 calories each); and one lean protein based meal. Remember the surgery is not the end game. Start now rethinking your eating and shopping habits. I think if I were to run into my doctor at the grocery store and was embarressed to have something in my cart then I should'nt buy it. -

Breakfast.
OutsideMatchInside replied to Roberto Molina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For years I have had a protein shake in the morning because I really don't have an appetite in the morning but you should have something. So I just have a protein shake for breakfast. I like it now because it keeps my calories low, kicks me off with some protein for the day. Then later if I change my plans or go out to eat, I already started the day off saving calories and carbs. -
What exactly is allowed on liquid diet?
iwannabealoser posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was not told to do the liquid diet but I want to try anyways to make sure my liver isnt so fatty, but Im not sure which liquids are allowed and which arent. Is it just Clear Liquids? Gatorade and Water is not nearly filling enough. Can I have milk? smoothies? Also, I am noticing that all the liquids have more carbs and less Protein which is the opposite of the pre-op food diet. Is it becuase I am drinking the wrong things or is it ok to have more carbs when you are doing liquids? Is it just the consistency that helps my liver, or does the nutritional value of the liquids make the difference? Sorry for all the questions, but I am on day 2 and so confused. I would rather not starve myself if it isnt necessary but if thats what its suppose to feel like, then Ill stick to it. :smile2: -
What exactly is allowed on liquid diet?
CurvasPeligrosas replied to iwannabealoser's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello~ I start my liquid diet on your surgery date. My surgery is on July 8 so I have to do 1 week liquid diet pre surgery. What I was told that I can drink is protein shakes, soups (just the liquid), juice, water, and broth. Good luck on your journey! -
I'm on my 8th day of post-op. Which included protein drinks, jello, applesauce, watered down oatmeal, cottage cheese etc. I'm a very picky eater and I decided to make some watered down instant potato to a cream of wheat consistency...very thin!!! Do you think that would cause a problem with the band?

I was never given a timeline for alcohol. I'd wait until you're at least done with the special diets post op. Alcohol will hit you harder than prior to surgery - or at least, it does most of us. In the beginning, I sincerely doubt you'll be consuming even remotely close to 700-900 calories a day, let alone what you'd been eating pre-op. There is nothing wrong with the OCCASIONAL indulgence. You have a choice: treat your sleeve like a diet or treat your sleeve like a tool that can help you learn moderation for life. If you choose the first option, remember that you still have to learn how to eat in maintenance. If you choose the second, maintenance becomes infinitely easier. In any case, always be wary of transfer addictions. Freshly sleeved we can't eat our emotions and there are numerous threads on VST about transfer addictions - to alcohol, in particular. So remember that the long term goal is control over food and our emotions, as opposed to letting food and our emotions control us. Do not feel bad for asking this question, OP. For every question you ask, you'll get as many varied responses as their are people on the internet. You have to choose what sounds right to you and what you can live with, but ultimately it's your choice and it's up to what your body will tolerate. ~Cheri

How much did you lose ?
MojoCAMI replied to MrsSantiago's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I dropped 12lbs if I am not mistaken.. I was not on full liquids just reduced carb, sugar fat intake. I did protein shakes breakfast lunch and ate a small meal at dinner low in carb sugar and stuff, lots of jello for snack because I could not have my grapefruit -
How much did you lose ?
MrsSantiago replied to MrsSantiago's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh my you get to eat more than i do. I only can have Protein shakes sugar free popsicles Jello and chicken broth thats it. -
My BMI is under 40, I have a pre-op diet of 1200 cal, low fat, low carb for 2 weeks. It is designed to shrink the liver so that it is easier to move and there is less risk for damage to the liver. The diet my surgeon gave me is essentially 5 slimfast bars or shake and 5oz of lean protein with 2 cups of non starchy vegetables for dinner, and one fat.

Eating post surgery question
makemyownluck replied to newbietx's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You do have to do shakes in the beginning stages, usually for a liquid pre op diet and then for a week or two after surgery. Many continue to use them because it's an easy source of Protein to make sure they meet their protein requirement post-op. But you don't have to if you are able to get enough protein elsewhere in your diet. Also, you say you have 150lbs to lose, are you saying you wouldn't be satisfied with 105-120 of that being gone forever? Many people change their goals as they lose, especially when they have that much to lose. However, it is a tool, so it is what you make of it. You can lose it all through a lot of effort on your part with working out, and maybe even plastic surgery to take care of lose skin which can account for 5,10,15 lbs or more depending on how your skin reacts to that much weight loss. How well your skin does is based on genes, age, and current condition. There are definitely a lot of variables to consider, and I agree with mags, you should go to a seminar at a local hospital to get more info! And poke around this site, there is much to be learned. Good luck to you! -
Advice: Have to lose 20 lbs...
mariecarmen replied to Peanut's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did a protein shake for breakfast and lunch. A Dannon Light & Fit (60-90 calorie one) around 3pm 4 oz meat and unlimited vegetables for dinner. Took a walk everyday. I lost close to 20 lbs in 3 weeks but it wasn't easy. I just kept thinking about the surgery. -
The dietician with my program said that too much protein can cause kidney damage. We were told to shoot for 60 grams per day. See what your nutritionist has to say about it.
-
I think its probably unlikely anyone banded could eat too much Protein since we're so limited on quantity. I question the safety of multiple Protein shakes per day, day aftr day though, especially soy based protein, but actual protein you're unlikely to get too much to the point where it causes you problems.

I was just told by my doc to up my protein to 90 gr-but mine is low right now- most people are told to get about 60-

Depressed because of weight gain
Soapandcandlequeen replied to Tess White's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Are you tracking and weighing food? I use my fitness pal. My surgery was June 8th so I am right around same stage. I am getting my protein and fluids in and trying to limit my carbs. Not as low as some here. I usually am between 40 and 80 grams a day. I have been in a stall this week. Don't worry too much. I know that's hard not to do. I went up 2 pounds one day then went back down and then kept losing. -
So after all this time, waiting thinking this will finally be it, I found out today that Tricare has denied my appeal. I was first denied due to lack of information, but this time we were able to get more documentation to send in and I even had a letter of medical neccesity from my pcp. The letter I got form Tricare stated that one of my reasons for being denied again is because its not a procedure covered by Tricare?! It also stated that I have no severe comorbities as of yet but they could arise in the future. The thing that I really dont get is that I'm only 5'1 and weigh 271 pounds. I am concidered small frame and in one part of my denial letter it even states that my health records show I have reached full statue so Im not going to get any taller either. I thought they approved you if you meet the 200% per Met Life table for height and weight??? Im so confuse, upset and I dont know what my other options are.

Help...i Am Hungry!!!
Oregondaisy replied to pfistasista's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't see why you couldn't have those things you mentioned. Carrots are high in carbs though, and carbs set off the hungry feeling. Tuna is protein, and protein stops hunger. I 'd skip the carrots and eat the tuna and green beans or brocolli. -
Is anyone else eating a lot after 2 weeks of surgery?
nuddybuddy replied to 1hawgfan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on Aug 8th (9 days ago) I was really starting to starve to death & since my doc. said full liquids anything you can get thru a straw without using a straw I have been having strained cream of chicken & cream of broccoli soup. I also put some creamy potato soup in the blender.I'm assuming these are okay, as they would go thru a straw. I've got to tell you after having only the diet jello & popsicles, broth & juices, these are REALLY hitting the spot. Plus I have 2 protein shakes a day & no sugar added, fruit flavored applesause & some water/juice/diet lipton gree tea. So... I think I'm gonna make it.I just need to start exercising now that I am feeling better. I'm still not supposed to bend down for another week or tug & pull as in the dishwasher, dryer, vacuuming, sweeping & mopping. & no lifting over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. I won't last 6 weeks on that, but I'll be careful. What has your doc. said? I know some people that are jumping in & doing everything right away & I could too, since I'm feeling much better, but I don't want to take the chance of causing band slippage, or just not healing. What do you think? -
Does everyone who loses 75+ lbs need plastic surgery?
Jachut replied to kero's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No I dont. I dont believe in Protein as the be all and end all of everything, to me its just one of the macronutrients we need - of the same importance as carbs and fats, not more. I dont count protein grams, I dont eat a ton of protein (probably average out 40 to maybe 60 grams most days for my 5ft 10, 168lb frame) and I have not had hanging skin, nor did I lose my hair. I think a well balanced diet, with plenty of the good fats can help, and taking a Multivitamin supplement is good insurance for everyone. I guess the only thing I could say that has perhaps helped is that I'm an exercise fanatic. I run looooong distances and I lift very heavy weights. I work very hard, at least an hour of really hard stuff most days. No namby pamby walking for me, lol. But I really think its luck of the draw. I also had 3 huge 10 lb babies and never got a single stretchmark, and I did not carry weight on my stomach but more, all over, stretched over a tall body. I also was overweight/ish most of my life, but not severely obese for more than about 4 years. Simple as that. -
