4 months post-op ... hit plateau
JeanZ_RN replied to Princess_Ally's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had more than one stall / plateau since surgery - see my signature area. One thing I think helped me break the most recent stall was to "change it up." I've been following the Atkins diet ever since I resumed solid food a few weeks post-op so I started eating some carbs and increased my calorie intake for a couple of weeks. I eat 4 times a day - 8a, noon, 4p and 8p. I love Quest bars, and I was eating one of those for 2-3 of the 4 meals each day. Someone on this site said she had to cut back on Quest bars to get the wt loss going again, so for the past week I've limited myself to just one bar per day - I eat real food the other 3 times each day now -- but just Protein and fat, keeping the carbs as low as humanly possible. Also I was eating several sugar free hard candies each day, and someone on here said she had to stop eating sugar alcohols for Atkins to work for her, so for the past week I've cut out the hard candies too. I had not been exercising at all since surgery, so now I've started wearing a pedometer to count my steps each day, with a goal of 10,000 steps a day eventually, and I've started taking my dogs for walks several times a week. And sure enough, the pounds have started to come off again, albeit v-e-r-y slowly. I'll TAKE it! The important thing is ... SLEEVE ON!! Best wishes! -
I don't think the "liquid" part is hard...for me, it was finding low calorie liquids! I don't like any of the artificial sweetners, so I did a lot of watered down juice, Gatorade, etc.
-
I'd prefer to eat smaller amounts of real foods than artificially sweetened stuff - I have a morbid fear of artificial sweeteners plus they give me a headache and I think they taste awful. It's all down to calories in vs calories out and I think you can safely say that given how many of the population is obese these days, artificially sweetened and low fat products have not made a big difference to our diet overall. We just eat more instead. So I dont down a tub of yogurt at a time for instance but will have a spoonful or two of real creamy full fat yogurt on my muesli in the morning. Not much difference in calories but a heap of difference in taste. I do drink skim milk though and always have.

Gained 3lbs After Surgery (5 days on clears!)
Swanton_Bomb posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got sleeved on Thursday. Sugar free clears since Tuesday (only broth, SF jello and lots of water), no more than 200 calories each day. I advanced to full liquids today and was able to choke down about 2oz. of protein shake. Upon arriving home today I weighed myself and I was 3 lbs. heavier than I was on my surgery morning. I was urinating a lot so I didn't think I was retaining water but it has to be that. It certainly wasn't from excess calories. Is this typical? -
Don't feel full? Day 11
Richard Foor replied to Penton5seaside's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A lot of people don't feel the full feeling till they stay eating denser solid foods. If you are satisfied without feeling the full feeling then it is better then eating till you feel full. Keep measuring your good and eating what satisfies you. Soon you should start tracking the numbers [calories carbs proteins] to make sure your getting enough. Note you don't have to track forever but it is a good idea until you develop the healthy eating patterns you need. Good luck. Enjoy the journey. -
NEED help reviving my motivation
terrydumont46 replied to Ricksgal_1996's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
i don't know much about the sleeve but if you would like to try what bandsters do is just eat 1/2 to 1cup of food 3 times a day. Protein being the biggest portion of your meal. we eat healthy and exercise. for your wt. loss to continue you need to either cut your calorie intake or up your exercise intensity.keep a food log. try and see where you are eating to many calories. you maybe eating more than you think you are. get a scale. weigh your food. good luck. here's to a healthy you in the new year -
I guess so. It is quite common to gain weight when you move off of mushies to solids then losing it after you start getting fills. Don't panic. Just try and keep your calories to under 1k a day. Protein first.

Portions Before 1st Fill
RestlessMonkey replied to Miriam's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Miriam, we're all so different! I had my band placed 8/29 and lost just at 42 pounds pre and post op dieting. However, once I advanced to "real" food, I gained back some. Personally, I refuse to diet. For me, it just makes me obsessed with food. If I measure and count etc I CAN (and have, many times) lose weight, for a while. But I am SO concerned with food (what can I eat when can I eat it how MUCH can I eat...if I eat this apple will it ruin my calorie count for the day? what if I weighed this wrong? What if I eat too much now and am HUNGRY later") that I eventually just wore out. The beauty of the band, to me, is the restriction. I can make good choices, and it is easy not to snack (for me anyway) when I'm not hungry. My surgeon is a conservative fill doc and not until my last fill (Jan 30) did I FINALLY feel restriction. From then to 3/5 (date of my 5th fill) I lost 9 pounds...just by making "good choices". Now that I have more restriction, I'm sure I'll lose at least that if not more. 9-10 pounds a month is great, to my mind, because I have not suffered or "starved" or fretted one time. I've even had pizza once (it amazed me how little it took to fill me up) and a patty melt from Whataburger. Well, I had about 1/3 of the patty melt, and was done. I was shocked and pleased. I've also had a lot of fresh fruit and veggies etc... Anyway my point is, it's up to you. It is your tool. Singers have different styles, people who use hammers for a living have their own methods and tricks. You will use the band the way that works for you. If you like calorie counting and knowing exactly what you eat and when, then do that. Because until you get restriction, like me you MAY gain a little back, or not lose. Some diet until the restriction finally kicks in to help them. I chose not to obsess about it but to just live my life making the best choices. And my way works for me, and the other way works for others! So unless your doc is more aggressive with the fills, the first one probably won't do much (you may be one of the lucky ones who feels it right away, but they are in the minority) and if you want to lose until you get restriction, you may need to diet. Or just watch what you eat and trust the process. Your call! Good luck! -
Do you have the stats for this cake? Calories, fat grams, etc? It looks interesting...

A snack is a good idea. I eat1/4c nuts and find them very satisfying. I measure because they are very calorie dense and have significant fat. Low carb though.

BUTTER, it's made from natural ingredients, Cream and salt (if its salted). If you can't say what the ingredients are, you should eat it. Plus if you a tiny bit, the calories are minimal. If you are only get in 500 to 600 calories, what is 45 more....?

hit a plateau .. any ideas?
catmoni2000 replied to kellbell2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, You might actually be eating too little. Especially based on the physical demands of your job, your body might be holding on to every pound it can because it has gone into starvation mode. Try bringing your calories up and see if that helps. Also, my doctor said don't worry too much about losing weight before the first fill. The body is healing and getting used to this new way receiving and processing food. Once you have your first fill, then you should start losing weight. Hope that helps a little. -
My surgery was Aug 27th. I was 350 day of surgery and now I'm at a standstill at 265. Before I could only eat 6oz. The size of a yogurt cup. Recently I increased going to the gym and am now Gibson.g myself so hungry. Today I had soup and then lunch was 3 inches of a turkey hoagie. All low fat. But not even an hour later my stomach was growling so bad and I was hungry again so I ate the other 3" of the hoagie. I'm not supposed to track calories but I am supposed to track portions. Am I eating to much??? Is there anyone else hungry like me? And how about going to the gym, is anyone really hungry afterwards?

I was told nothing over 10 pounds for 6 weeks, 20 pounds for 8 weeks..... after that do as much as your body can handle.... but increase slowly...it takes a LOT of energy to power lift and at that early out we arent eating enough calories to support it in most cases.... I didnt start HEAVY lifting until over 3 months out....

No sugar, no calories. And I would much rather drink Water than those nasty-ass Protein shakes. I've had so many I never want to see them again. I haven't had any trouble with fluids at all, fortunately. I've always been a serious water drinker. It was just those awful shakes. I've tried so many... and couldn't find one that didn't make me want to hurl! PS - I LOVE your signature!!

The Real Scoop on Calories
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in Food and Nutrition
I didn't see anything about 7000 calories in the article. The article reinforces to me that calories alone are not the sole determinant of weight loss. The weight loss model is much more complex than calories in/calories out which is one of the primary things I have learned on this journey. -

One year out - What are you eating?
LilMissDiva Irene replied to bookleen's topic in Food and Nutrition
Hi bookleen, I'm a few months shy of being a year out - and by now you know I'm close to goal but not quite there yet. I was never really given a set goal by my PCP nor my surgeon so I've just been "winging it". I originally chose the higher scale from the BMI charts which was 154 Lbs. However the closer I got I realized that would be too light for me and my frame so I bumped it up to 165 Lbs. Anyway I'm very sure that once I have all this skin removed it will be around 10ish pounds! Anyway, here is what a typical day for me would look like: Early morning snack: Protein shake Breakfast: Hi Fiber oatmeal packet -OR- 2 eggs (equiv Egg Beaters) and 2 slices of turkey bacon Mid morning snack: Something around 100 calories - usually a string cheese... Lunch: 2 oz of meat, and good carbs -OR- Protein Shake -OR- Some kind of salad Dinner: 2-3 oz of lean meat (I only eat poultry or seafood/fish) Small serving of green veggie and a couple bites of good carbs Snack: Serving of almonds -OR- 1TBSP of chunky Peanut Butter (yummy!!) -OR- Whole Grain Saltines This is my most common foods. I try to mix it up sometimes to bump around my calories to keep my body guessing. I will also tack on extra Protein shakes from time to time if I burn lots of calories. Typical workouts (spread out): An hour on the treadmill walking/jogging/running 30 Minutes on my Spinner/Stationary Bike 30 Minutes on my Elliptical 30 Minutes of Calisthenics 45 Minutes Brisk Walk at Work I want to incorporate more DVD style workouts and some yoga!! -
My advice is to stop worrying so much about Protein. Honestly, it took many of us MONTHS to consistently get both our liquids and our protein in. Right now you're on the fast track to burning yourself out completely. Cut yourself some slack and eat things that actually sound good to you that are reasonably healthy choices. Sometime around 8-9 months I realized that I needed more carbs but with only so much room in my sleeve I was forced to make up my protein intake elsewhere. You can add unflavored Protein powder to soups (it never really worked great for me but some people swear by it) and I always did two scoops of protein in my morning shake. This way I hit my totals for the day but had room for other foods that I needed. You can also try sludge - a bodybuilder friend of mine taught me this one. Mix one scoop of protein powder (I preferred chocolate) with 1 Tbs. Peanut Butter and just enough Water to make a sludge out of it. I chilled it really cold in the freezer and ate it up like ice cream. It's kinda weird but packs a protein/calorie punch and is easy to get down. Oh, and I second the vote on cottage cheese. If you like it, it's a great food. I was SO sad when my lactose intolerance made me cross it off my list. It's a soft food and is packed with protein. So, eat something you want to eat. Honestly, you're killing yourself here and it's not even necessary! It's very important to stick to your surgeon's guidelines so you heal properly but you're forcing yourself into a corner with your diet. Mental health is important for our overall well-being, too, you know! You need to be happy about what you're eating or you'll start to regret your decision. Good luck. I admire your determination but you don't need to be so fixated on reaching those goals so early out! ~Cheri

I went to my local Vonn's (Randall's) and discovered in their Soup section (the one by the deli/sandwich/bread shop). A Red Curry with chicken Soup. It has the Thai Curry taste. I put it all in the blender and watered it down with some fat free milk (I'm still on full liquids). It was great....it is high calorie 1 cup = 240 cal, but I can't eat a cup at a time and it's a great treat when thinking I need THAI!

I used to be a Starbucks regular.
Marathongirl replied to pik's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never use to like Starbucks, but I became hooked on the unsweetened iced coffee with skim milk. I love it, I love it, I love it!!!! The only thing I hate is that it does have some calories, but it gives me that extra jolt of energy I need. -
You stop losing when you consume as many calories as you burn in a day.
-
So if a person were to eat a few of these outside of planned meals, would you consider it grazing? I think it is sort of a negative calorie food as the number of cals will be negated by the effort to eat and digest them. They seem to be "filling" also in that hunger recedes after eating them and I feel a little restriction. Your thoughts?
-
But if you want to get technical, I suppose since it's vegetative matter, it is grazing >: D Lol! I agree with the negative calories. Carrots would be the same I think. I think I would eat them as one of my Snacks and then be proud of myself for eating negative calories for a snack rather than the high calorie snacks I used to eat.
