How important is malabsorption in maintaining weight loss?
ready2B posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've been researching the differences between the bypass and sleeve options and it gets really confusing! My understanding from most studies is that you can achieve comparable weight loss over the first couple of years with either. But, since I have such a long history of losing large amounts of weight and gaining it all back and more, I am really concerned about choosing the one which will give me the best chance of keeping the weight off for the rest of my life. So, from all I have read so far, the biggest difference between the way bypass works and the sleeve is, that although both restrict intake and hunger, the bypass also changes absorption. So - I assume this means that if I get to the point 3-4 years down the road where I can consume 1000 calories a day with either (which several sites suggested is typical), fewer of those calories will actually be absorbed with the bypass than with the sleeve. Is this correct? My biggest fear is that if I go for a long period of time eating less calories - which will happen with both - will there be a time when my body thinks it is in that starvation mode again and switches back to that horrible place of being able to gain weight at a much lower calorie level than normal. For example now, I might normally eat 1400 calories a day, but if I want to lose weight so I might eat 1000 calories/day for a few months. Then if I start eating 1200 calories/day, I gain all that weight back! Is there that same "diet rebound" with WLS in general or not? If not, why? And if so, is there less of that with bypass because your body just doesn't absorb as much ever again? -
Band out yesterday, sleeve in two weeks. Weird symptoms
Jax replied to anonynurse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am having my band out/revision to sleeve on the 17...day after you. I hope you feel better way before than! Why did your doc choose to do 2 separate operations? How long was your band in? Mine is only 15 months old so maybe its a scar tissue thing if yours was in longer? In any event, you are 1/2 way home! Go you! -
Need Advice for Weight Loss Surgery
Travelher replied to hollyrose062's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Let me start with saying the band is the MOST invasive surgery, not the least because the complication rate is so high (around 50%) that you could require more surgeries...that is my definition of pretty invasive. I can can post a link to a whole host of those studies if you would like, I had to have my band removed and revised to rny. I chose rny because it is the gold standard been around for decades and proven to work. Sleeve hasn't been around for 10 years yet, so after my mistake of using the band when it was still new...wasn't gonna do that again. Also I developed acid reflux from the band and I knew the sleeve could make it worse and rny often cures it. Also I liked the extra insurance with malabsorption...most sleevers don't dump, the majority of rnyers do with the rny. I liked that it was insurance should I make bad food choice. I don't ever plan have another bariatric surgery. Both sleeve and rny require additional Vitamins. I like the Patches..easy to use and don't know they are there. Having said all this the sleeve is getting close to the 10 year mark and looking like a good alternative to rny. It was my backup if the band had done too much damage and an rny couldn't be done. -
Share your story: Weird body habits post-op
James Marusek replied to Rose400491's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
After my RNY gastric bypass surgery I became lactose intolerant. Therefore whenever I drank a glass of milk, it quickly lead to an upset stomach and diarrhea. This condition lasted two months and then went away. Dumping Syndrome is experienced mostly by RNY patients but some sleeve patients can also experience this condition. Recognize the pre-triggers and stop eating the moment you encounter them in the future. The pre-triggers can be hiccups, sneezing, excessive mucous, a change in the way food taste, and others. A runny nose is a pre-trigger. Individuals are different and their pre-triggers vary. Are you drinking decaf coffee? -
Those normally contain a fair amount of sugar, if you're a bypassed you could "dump", I wonder if Breyers or Edys make sugar free forms? Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

I am having stomach and abdominal discomfort in that area, which feels in a way like cramping. I've been having this for months. I actually want to go to the hospital to get it removed its really bad. I spoke with the doctor he said I should have an appointment but he doesnt want to get rid of it.. This seems strange if anything. Anyone have any advice? This seems really confusing. Would there be any steps I could take before I get rid of it?

Let me ask you a question- I called Cigna and they confirmed that revision coverage is different than starting from scratch and showed the 4 bullet points. I qualify for all but 1 - the one about the band causing the medical problem. The surgeons office said that because of that- I need to see the nutritionist, psyc etc... So that it will be easier to get approved in 3 months vs no wait with the revision. I'm worried that after all that hardwork- what else do I need to do

Losing hope...what now?
travelinsnorkel replied to travelinsnorkel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
He said that he really anchored the port on tight this time and it might just be extra scarring from that. He did do the port revision for free. I am going to see what happens this week and if he can't find it, I'm going to get a second opinion even if I have to pay out of pocket AGAIN! -
Ok, I don't exactly know where to start but I will start with: Today I went for a consult with dr. Jay. He suggested I have the gastric sleeve procedure done. I have a history of healing complications and he advised this would bypass all of those possibilities. I have scheduled for the procedure on 12-4. NOW I AM FREAKING OUT. :help: anyone know anyone that has had this, what their success has been? all those other questions.

Here I am...again...starting anew.

You won't regret your decision to revise to the sleeve. My wife initially had Lap-Band. She lost a lot of weight, but was totally miserable the entire time. When I decided to have surgery, I definitely didn't want the band, I went with sleeve. I had a very positive experience, almost no problems. When my wife's band eventually failed, she went with the sleeve and has had very few problems since. She also lost a lot more weight. -

Did you revise from lap band to sleeve? If so, which did you like better? Good luck with your continued journey!! I have faith you can get back to goal. Thank you so much. You are very kind and I appreciate the encouragement!!! -
Headed to hospital for upper GI. My surgery date 2/4/13. Just a few days ago I have been having problems with the puréed foods I had been eating or even Jello. It is causing pain and nausea . Even Water is starting to hurt to drink. Called the surgeon yesterday and he scheduled me for test today.... Praying for answers. I just want to be "normal" again... I actually had the bypass

Ok, I was saving two pair of jeans because they were like new, they used to be so tight I couldn't wear them. I was looking forward to be able to put them on. I got them out yesterday to try to see if they would fit, and horrors of horrors, they are too big!!! I couldn't even get them to stay up comfortably with a belt. I'm crushed because now they have to go to the good will and I didn't even get to wear them!!! Oh well, I suppose that is a good thing. People have finally noticed that I'm losing weight, one at church and one saleslady at work. I told them thank you and yes it is hard work. I've lost 45lbs and I know I should be proud of that but somehow doesn't feel like enough. I know that I shouldn't compare myself to others but sometimes it's hard not to get weight loss envy. I was sort of complaining the other day and my son said to me that even though I'm losing weight I still look good and healthy unlike two of his co-workers that had the bypass procedure, he says they've lost a lot of weight but look like they've been sick. So i guess that losing slowly isn't so bad as long as I look healthy. I'm off all BP meds now, and have reduced my diabetes meds in half, Doc says probably will be off all soon. I am waiting to go back for another sleep study to see if I can go off my CPAP, I can't wait to get rid of it. I have 4 lbs to go before I hit one-derland, I can wait I'm so close.... but probably another 2-3 weeks. Oh well, slow and steady....

I am 2 days post opp in so much pain. Did anyone else have a lot of pain. Or did anyone get sent home with a drain

The closer you get to a weight that you think might be a goal one, keep in mind how far you have come. You want to be at a weight that you can easily maintain and love the way you look at this weight. Don't get all wrapped around BMI and the like. If you get to 175 and love yourself there and can maintain it then go with it. We are not like regular people who just need to lose 20 pounds. 100+ pounds will be a major accomplishment. Now all that being said my original goal was 180 pounds but when I got their I revised to 170 which according to BMI is in the normal range for my height. I wish you the best, you will do it!!

I called BCBS today (my provider) and they don't cover Lapband... I am soo disappointed. They cover gastric bypass though. What am I going to do? I don't have money to pay out of pocket?!

I've been Approved for the revision
dbernier01 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I spoke to the doc's insurance person last Tuesday - so assuming she sent in my information by Wednesday - I was approved on Friday -- and she called me this morning! 3 days = surreal. 1st available surgery date is Aug 31st -- however I am scheduled to go to a conference (in Vegas) the week of 9/13-15 -- is that doable??? (not worried about not being able to eat, as I can back my Protein drinks and instant Soup.) OR should I ask for a date after the conference? WOW Donna Metro DC area Banded 7/07 and soon to be Sleeved !! -
I'm 10 months in gastric bypass and lost about 80 so far, and haven't last anymore since October. I know I'm eating wrong and what to change and eat things I know will make me sick. I'm ashamed of myself and want to change. I drink with food and over eat because of that. If I don't I can only eat about 4-6 of depending on what it is.. I look at calories and carb and try to stick it out at work. Shake in the morning an Adkins meal for lunch by then it's like 500+ plus and feel that I've over eaten by then and then get home and stress over it and eat more. Banded January 24..mixed feelings
slm2007 replied to jakrnsewing's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad this was posted. I've seen and read all the "flowery" posts about how wonderful this is and I've really really wanted to see someone tell me the nasty truth. I've been going through the pre-surgery approval process and do not have it scheduled yet. I've been tossing back and forth the band or bypass and don't think I can put my body through by-pass.....the idea of them redoing my duct work freaks me out. I'm afraid of the surgery and that it won't work. I didn't realize this was going to be that painful. I figured I could get it done on Wednesday and be back to work by Friday? Is that unrealistic? I have an almost three year old, so should i hold off on this if it is that painful, because I have to take care of him....yeah, husband is there, but my son is definately "mommy do." I'm glad to hear what it is really like. I'm afraid that if I get this done that I won't lose weight and I'll get frustrated. I'm afraid that I'll regret my decision. I'm NOT looking to do fast weight loss like the bypass....because I don't want to look old. I know that is really snotty of me, but my aunt had bypass and she came to my sisters wedding and I didn't even know who she was because she aged so much from it. It was almost scary. I often said to myself "do I want to be fat and youthful looking or do I want to be skinny and old looking." This is why I think the band is my best option because it does it slow enough that you can see results (I hope) and yet your body won't go into weight-loss-shock. I like hearing the Truth about this surgery but it makes me even more on the ropes about it. My family tells me to do it the "healthy" way and they just don't get it...I've tried for 20 years of up and down diets. I can lose weight but I can't keep it off and when it comes back it is twice as much. At this point, I'll never stay motivated enough without help to lose the 80+ pounds I need...not want...but need to lose. I want to be Healthy and be around to raise my son. I'm not looking to be skinny. I have a goal size and I just don't want to shop in the chubby chic section anymore. I want to buy normal clothes even if they are a 12 or 14! I'm an more than willing to hear more truthful post op stories because I want to go into this with my eyes wide open.......you always hear the success stories, which are great motivation, but you never here...the adventures to success. So, it is painful huh! Yikes. -
Do you sometimes NOT like the changes you see in the mirror?
Laurinda replied to dancinglamb's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ok Kate that made me both laugh and become scared lol. I think when I go out tomorrow looking for bras I will bypass the sales person and just take one of every size in the fitting room. ( I say that but I can bypass A-C ) At this point I am not looking for anything pretty just practical..ok industrial even. I just want to be able to adjust the straps like a pulley "higher, higher, higher"! <wink> -
I did tons of research before surgery, but decided against DS for the same reasons I decided against gastric bypass: malabsorption. Both DS and GB require that you monitor your vitamin levels super closely for life, even more closely that we should do with our sleeves. The other issue for me was dumping syndrome. I had IBS pre-op and wanted to avoid making that worse if possible. I've been lucky that I haven't had any episodes of that since surgery, so I made the right choice for me.

Taking the Plunge: surgery on Monday
Trayjay33 replied to MarcK's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery, it's normal to have those questions. It depends on your surgeons restrictions. You may be restricted regarding lifting on the job and it may be affected by whether you have open bypass or laparoscopic. Regarding an active lifestyle it's the same thing, how long you will be on pain medication, how long you will be on blood thinners. All in all the time you spend recovering is important. Take it easy and heal so that you don't have any issues you could have avoided. You will be amazed at how active you will be when that weight starts coming off.
