  1. When I answered above I was thinking of the physical sensations as I ate, not when I get full. I usually stop at about 80% full. But true true that if I overate (with the VSG), I would get serious heart palpitations and not feel well till I finish digesting it. After the RNY revision, if I take one bite too many, I get a runny nose.

I'm doing gastric bypass. I have ti eat and drink 3 protein shakes a day and 1 lean quisen meal at supper for 2 weeks before surgery Sent from my SM-G781V using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Surgery finally approved and scheduled for late Nov. Has anyone had to be on a pre-op liquid diet for 4 weeks, this is my doctors recommendation.

    Dumping or something else?

I agree with @catwoman7, but I'll add one thing. There are three things I suppose this could be: Dumping syndrome. Not all that likely, but possible I guess? A reaction to one of the ingredient. Could be xylitol, but there are other "not-really-foods" in there that may have also caused a reaction? That said, my money's on excess fiber. Those bars seem to have quite a bit of fiber in them, especially soluble fiber. Soluble fiber will swell in the gut, expanding to a much larger size than the bar itself. As a bypass patient, I think that definitely could have caused your symptoms.

    November Surgeries

I am having my bypass done Nov 4th. So glad your surgery got moved up! Good luck, and keep us updated!
  6. I have had two knee replacements and one of them was a horrible mess from the start. I'd like to not have to have revisions as long as possible. I am so close to diabetic, but I have fought to not take any medications for 12 years after my messed up knee replacement. I am on medication for high blood pressure, my cholesterol is high, my hips are hurting and I just want to be able to move better without as much pain and live a very long happy life with my husband and our fur-kids. I have tried everything out there and loose weight, but it comes right back on when I try to eat real foods.
  7. Interesting question, Kim. A good one. I don't think anyone has asked me that before. I didn't have any different physical sensation with either the vsg or revision except a feeling of tightness in the morning meal only, especially in the beginning. That was solved by drinking a warm drink, like coffee or tea, first to loosen it up a little. There was/is no pain whatsoever otherwise.
  8. This!! I had people suggest it to me, but I never saw myself needing it. I always thought I could do it on my own, I don't weight that much etc. Yet in those years the weight was creeping on me, every year 20-25lbs here and there. My sister had it done earlier this year because of the comorbidities that run in our family, and then it hit me. If she was advised to get it and weighs 80lbs less than me, why wouldn't I need it, why after trying for years I still think I can do it on my own? Got all the details I could from her and a close friend who had bypass (she had vsg), and once I understood my why, everything just fell into place. Now I'm getting ready to have surgery within a month.

    Stomach spasms??

My surgeon prescribed hyoscyamine after my surgery to treat stomach spasms. I didn’t end up needing to take it (I think they just prescribe it to all patients just in case) and I remember the nurse telling me that spasms are more common for VSG patients than gastric bypass. So yes, I think it is common, and your surgeon may be able to prescribe something that can help.

    Awful doctor experience

I will agree with the others your options are to a) accept the surgeon's social awkwardness/rudeness if the other clinic members are supportive, or b) find a different surgeon/clinic. In your shoes I would probably look for another surgeon/clinic. I do want to point out that the RNY bypass surgery is generally accepted to be more effective than VSG. RNY results in greater weight loss, resolves heartburn/GERD, and resolves, improves, or prevents Diabetes 2. Some say VSG is a "more invasive" surgery, but frankly, removing 80% of your stomach is pretty damn invasive. With RNY bypass the stomach is separated but not removed. Both are performed laparoscopically. The VSG is easier and quicker for the surgeon. However, a lot of VSG patients have to have revision to RNY later.
  11. Due to my new insurance excluding all weight loss surgeries, I am looking for high quality/low(er) cost surgeries, Gastric Bypass or Mini Gastric Bypass. From what you have read, what is everyone's opinions on the differences between Mexico Bariatric Center and the Obesity Control Center? If you had to choose, or do your surgery over again, which would you pick? Thanks!

    Stomach spasms??

I had bypass but I had them for a few days in my esophagus. I had esophagus "trimming and stretching" done to repair damage from years of GERD. So my surgeon said it was normal for what he did. Not sure about the abdomen but it seems like it would make sense. He just cut off your stomach and it is probably a little mad about it.
  13. 20 yrs post op...went for a scope yesterday with new Bariatric Dr...have gained back 70lbs in last 4yrs... 55yrs old...he told me I had ulcer...he could burn off part off my stomach so I could lose weight???... only if I quit smoking... New to WLS but not dieting.

For the most part. I had road bumps along the way. I had multiple surgeries following my initial WLS for VSG with hiatal hernia repair (knee hardware removal, WLS revision due gerd by hiatal hernia, mesentery hernia repair, and small bowel resection due to obstruction from the seromas from the hernia repair 🤦‍♀️). I’m just prone to hernias for whatever reason and even knowing what I know now I’d do it all again because I feel so much better now than I did before.

    Unable to vomit

Yeaaaa.. I thought it was just me. After talking to a few other people who had Bypass, it seems like a thing. I know someone who had bypass 3 years ago and hasn't vomited since. like @Arabesque mentioned, I have had a single bite of steak come up one time, from likely not chewing enough. Within minutes of swallowing the bite I was sick and at a restaurant, so went to the bathroom and just stood over the toilet like drooling and gagging,, then PLOP a tiny piece of steak and no joke I FELT PERFECT IMMEDIATELY! IT WAS CRAZY WEIRD. Otherwise just "foamies" 1 other time.

    How much can you eat?

I had VSG revision to bypass due to gerd over a year ago, but my experience with the VSG and restriction for 6 to 7 years was the following: I didn't have alot of restriction either but had enough to be successful. With meat, about 3 ounces. Everything else about 1 cup. The great thing is... Even years out, I was never able to truly "pig out" again. If and when I ate too much, my heart would pound like crazy. I did have to work to stay away from slider foods since the end result of that is very little restriction. As long as you don't get gerd, and you eat protein first, it is a wonderful tool for weightloss and lifetime restriction but it takes work and commitment.

    what surprised you?

Sometimes restriction takes a bit of time to feel. Due to cut nerves. But I get what you're saying. For me, it depends on the foods that I eat, some offer more restriction than others. Like grilled chicken, denser proteins offer more restriction than say, Greek yogurt or crockpot shredded chicken. The bypass is just a tool, and it will not do all of the work for us, which I have to be mindful of now because when I had a lap band, that thing was so restrictive that almost everything got stuck and felt dense. So when you can, choose denser proteins and weigh/measure your food so your stomach and brain learns what your new "full" feels like. I didn't lose my hunger either like a lot of people do. And I work out and lift weights and that has always made me hungrier, especially when I started weights again at 6 weeks post op. I never experienced nausea, but I know acid can cause nausea. Are you on an acid reducer?

    what surprised you?

I guess since I'm a revision, Band to Bypass the only thing that surprised me is how natural Bypass feels. After having a torture device (Lap Band) for about 7 years, this feels so completely natural. I've had no food intolerances. Fried foods smell gross, that's the only thing that I've noticed. Like when you park at Publix, and you're walking inside and the deli is frying chicken and that smell is permeating the parking lot... 🤢 As for medication, I take my normal meds and vitamin in the morning with my proffee and then I have an alarm set on my phone for my calcium. Noon and 4 pm. I carry some calcium in my purse in case I'm not home. It's just part of wls that I committed to, so it's no big deal to me. And that's the extent of my meds for the day. Very doable, imo.

    Low folate, iron deficient anemia…

I got my Lap Band almost ten years ago, and I can't remember if they did pre op blood work and if they did what the results were. I'm almost three months post op revision Bypass now and this surgeon did do pre op blood work, but it was all normal. I've been on continual vitamins/calcium for nearly ten years, so that's probably part of the reason my labs were normal. It's not uncommon for obese people to be malnourished/have low vitamins & mineral levels. If you think about it, for most obese people, the choices that they make/made is part of the reason that gets a lot of us to wls. Fast food, pizza, burgers for the most part has very little nourishment as far as vitamins/minerals go (besides carbs, lol). I'm sure your team will get your levels up to normal before you have your surgery. As a matter of fact, after my pre op labs came back, even tho they were normal, I was started on chewable bariatric vitamins. It was standard protocol for pre op patients. So don't fret, you'll be fine! Best wishes!
  20. Hello everyone! I’m new to the site! Just had my initial consultation appointment today with a weight loss surgeon. When he walked into the room, his first comment was, “Hi I’m going to make you mad first. How did you get this big at 34?” For some context, I’m 5’10, 350lbs….size 28. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t know how to answer the question besides saying, “food”. Then when it got to the questions portion of the consult, I had just begun asking my question (didn’t even get to get the whole question out) before he cut over me and began giving an answer which wasn’t even remotely related to the question I was about to ask. So I waited for him to finish, to which I started to ask again and he once again cut me off. He also kept pushing for the bypass option, and when I finally asked my question about vsg, he quickly turned that option down. Now I’m just rethinking the whole thing because it made me feel invisible, and just awful. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or maybe some words of encouragement? It took a lot for me to make this first step, and now I’m completely discouraged.

    Planning surgery mid May

Hello and welcome. I have heard of many people on here who have gone to Mexico and been very happy with their results. Like kcuster83 mentioned some people do run into issues with getting follow up care though so I would ask my family Dr about their take on that to make sure they are on board to do your labs and stuff each year at the very least. Also know if you need a revision or something you may have to go back to Mexico which I assume means you would have to self pay again. You may also consider Las Vegas or one of the others places in the states where it is Not quite as cheap as Mexico but you won’t have the same concerns with follow up. From what I understand if it is an emergency they have to help you here regardless of where you had surgery but I would probably want to hear that from a doctor or maybe the ER just to be sure. This surgery is by no means cheating. You still have to put in every bit of the work and make the same changes as anyone who is dieting and exercising to lose weight. People act like we get to sit there eating pizza and donuts while the fat just melts off or something. We still have to be disciplined and make all the good choices most of us just get to do it without our body screaming out at us that we are starving for once in our lives. It’s a tool that makes it a little easier and in every other aspect of our lives we pride ourselves In choosing the best tools to get the job done so why not use it. If someone uses the dishwasher or a drill instead of doing it by hand we don’t say they are cheating? and if someone creates a spreadsheet to complete a task in half the work we literally praise them for their idea. Or what if someone uses patch or a pill to make quitting smoking a little easier? I don’t know about you but I would encourage it, not treat them like a failure because they aren’t suffering as much as going cold Turkey. I think as a society to many of us believe that obesity is a moral failure and struggling with it is our punishment to which we are sentenced to life without parole or death by preventable medical issues. Don’t get me wrong though. I felt the same way as you pre surgery. I just realized that it couldn’t be further from the truth throughout this process.

    Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?

I went back and forth a bit on if I should have went for bypass rather than sleeve. But I don't regret my decision. I know that I will not lose as fast, but I am ok with that, and I like knowing that revisions are possible.
  23. Hello everyone! I'm planning gastric bypass surgery for mid-May 2023. My insurance doesn't cover it so I've been looking at Mexico. Which of course is causing my family to freak out, because "scary Mexico"! I think I have decided on Oasis of Hope. I like that you stay in the hospital the whole time instead of a hotel and my husband can stay right there with me. I'm terrified I won't be able to stick to the diet afterward and I'll lose weight and then gain it all back. I've done so many diets and every year I'm just a little bit bigger. So tired of being tired and uncomfortable. I saw a post of NSV's and about cried when one person said they fit a regular size towel around themself! I can't even remember the last time I could do that! Or fitting behind the steering wheel without it occasionally rubbing on my belly. Anyways, I thought I'd break the ice and post here. Remind myself that many many people do this and it isn't cheating and I'm not alone!

    Someone please read this

I don’t have any experience with band to speak of but have heard of many people who decide to get them removed and do a revision. Not nearly as many doctors are even doing bands anymore because of the issues people are having with them. If you continue to have issues it’s definitely something to consider.
  25. I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡

    Someone please read this

This is the exact thing that caused the band to damage my esophagus. I now have permanent esophageal damage because the lap band was so unnatural and damaging. For the life of me, I do not understand why surgeons are still placing lap bands. They pose more harm than good imo. If you're having difficulties with your band, consider a revision! There's better options available now. My bypass feels sooo natural compared to the lap band. I hope this resolves for you soon. Best wishes.
