On most things you strive for 'healthy' levels, just like non-ops. You'll find that 60g of Protein is what non-ops should get. The extra may be to compensate for malabsorption, but my plan called for 60g. Sodium, like non-ops, you want to reduce. 600 calories is a draconian crash diet in non-op life and like I said folks that do that have willpower that I don't have. For my plan from day 1 I was learning how to eat for the rest of my life. I basically ate to maintain my goal weight and lost weight down to that balance point. At any rate, for everyone losing all that weight is/was great positive reinforcement, telling our lizard brain "plan = good." All minerals, vitamins and other nutrients: you need what a non-op needs. Except you may need a bit more iron and calcium as our malabsorption seems to hit those hard. Again, fat is the same as for non-ops. Reduce it. Some Gastric Bypass folks (like me) dump on fat, so be careful. Just because we are eating less and consuming fewer calories, it doesn't mean we can reduce everything by 75% or 60% or whatever. Generally, we still need 100% of most vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Bottom line is you need everything a non-op needs to be healthy, you just have to do it in 600 calories. If your nutritionist shrugged on this question, well... Good luck, Tek

Congratulations on your loss. I haven’t yet shopped from the bariatric pal store. I do buy low calorie snacks from the grocery store that are empty calories though and have them on occasion. It’s obviously better if you can find ones you like with protein added so it actually fills you up. Keep up the good work.
  3. At Taco Bell, you can have their Power protein bowls. Either steak or chicken. You have to have them remove the cheese and rice, but you can have everything else. I LOVE them. If you have it with chicken, it's 240 calories. If you have it with steak, it's 260 calories. You can have everything else (I can't have the lettuce, tho, because it doesn't sit right in my stomach. But if you're ok with it, you can have it). You don't have to take anything else out, and it's SOOOOO good!!!!!! Oh, and you can add onions for 0 calories and jalapenos for an extra 5 calories. Anything else adds too many calories, but you can add that stuff, if you want it, and not have to worry. The stuff that comes with it already (besides the cheese and rice that has to be removed) is steak or chicken, avocado ranch sauce, tomatoes, reduced fat sour cream, guacamole, black beans, and lettuce.

There are as many post-op plans as there are surgeons. Heck, there were 3 surgeons in the practice to which I went and each had a different program. Here on this site there are post-op plans of 500 calories per day, others have no restriction. My plan didn't count calories but I'd say it was about 1200 calories per day. I would never have been able to sustain 500 calories a day some plans require. Folks that can do this are superheroes in my book. I wouldn't have had surgery if the post-op diet wasn't rational. I should think you need to use caution taking a normal 2000 calorie diet. You are reducing calories but there are other things, like protein, that you are not reducing. Other things you need to keep volumes up while reducing other things. Your notes are likely more definitive on your plan than anything you will find on the internet. Don't trust strangers on the internet. We are often just plain wrong. Good luck, Tek

Which surgery are you having? The Sleeve doesn't change any digestive plumbing so if the T is in a pill form it shouldn't be an issue. Gastric Bypass does change the plumbing. The pyloric valve is bypassed and everything you eat or drink drops straight into your intestines, a small amount of which are bypassed. This creates a malabsorption of some things, like calories, and can impact how well some time-released meds work. My experience is some time-released meds work well enough and others not so much. It's largely trial and error. Some more critical meds my Doc doesn't take the chance and I take some pills multiple times per day. Things that are injected or are dermally absorbed wouldn't be affected by WLS at all. Early on most people can't eat a lot of calories and many post-op diets run a severe calorie deficit which will result in loss of fat and muscle. Us fatso's had extra bone and muscle to support all that fat. I imagine T and the gym could reduce the muscle loss. Your current knowledge would apply still post-op. I did dermally applied prescription T pre-op and asked about it when I was having surgery. Being dermally applied there was no issue, but pills follow the caution included above re: malabsorption and time-release. Good luck, Tek
  6. I think all of the SF sauces have a weird after taste. I have tried so many and have had no luck. I just use regular sauce because I barely use it anyway. When I do, I measure it out and make sure I know exactly how much I use. I think the bigger problems of our past was using 1/4 cup or more at a time rather than the 2 TBSP servings. Those calories add up FAST!
  7. I recently discovered Sweet Baby Rays sugar free Hickory BBQ sauce which isn’t bad at all. Not quite as sweet as regular BBQ but it satisfied the craving. Then I learned here this morning that G Hughes makes a whole line of sugar free sauces, marinades and dressings. Just wondering if anyone else has tried those or has any other brands that they thought were good. I am trying to find a lower calorie versions to replace each of my pre surgery favorites (it’s amazing how many calories are in condiments). So far I have found a pretty good replacement for My ranch by Bolthouse farms. It’s not sugar free, but It’s made with yogurt so it is 50 calories a serving and that SBR BBQ sauce is 15 calories a serving but the G Hughes one is only 5 so hopefully that is just as good or better. Anyways, what lower calorie dressings and sauces do you buy? Or do you just budget for the good stuff??

    1 month post op activities

Our bodies all recover differently. Best advice I can give is to give in and rest and take naps as needed. Your body recovers while you sleep so the more you do it now when your body is calling out for it the quicker you will recover in the long run. As far as food for energy, you may or may not be able to talk them into letting you bring in a protein shake but when you get a little further out you can usually sneak in a beef Jerky or a protein bar for longer outings where you truly can’t find a healthy option. Post surgery I ALwAYS have a cooler in my car packed full of healthy options I can run back to even if I don’t expect to be out all day. If I leave the house, I’m ready for hours with my Yeti packed just in case. And I always bring my favorite salad dressing and my sugar free bbq sauce with me so if I have to do fast food I don’t have to use their high calorie sauces. I find several healthy options at Chick-fil-A. Any of their Salads with grilled chicken or grilled nugget kids meal with fresh fruit.
  9. Have they thought about a feeding tube temporarily? I know it seems extreme, but he has to get the calories and nutrients his body needs. If they can't figure this out, and he's not able to keep anything down, that might be the way to go for now.
  10. Finally have my surgery scheduled as of a couple days ago. For 3 weeks prior to phone appointment I was on a diet of 2 meal replacement shakes and 1 lunch under 500 calories only consisting up a small portion of lean meats and green veggies. Successfully loss 23lbs. Now that my surgery is scheduled the surgeon put me on 3 meal replacements a day and 0 food consumption. Also, I officially quit smoking about 5 days prior to that appt. First day on this diet and I don't honestly know how I feel. I'm hungry but I'm also stressed about so many things with and without the surgery I don't even want to eat. I'd rather smoke if you want me to be honest. That is effecting me more than anything probably because I am stressed. This surgery is my whole life savings. Feel like I'll get all the way there and something will cause the surgery to not be able to happen.

    Food Before and After Photos

I’m sure yours were better but I was looking to cut calories and I asked the waitress at my local bbq place if they could make ribs with sugar free sauce if I requested it ahead or something. She suggested getting them dry and using my own sauce so I did what they call “dry” ribs as takeout for dinner tonight. I used sweet baby rays hickory sugar free sauce. They weren’t bad. Satisfied my craving at least.
  12. Fam had take out rotisserie chicken and bbq ribs tonight. 593 calories for the plate. Not sure if im going to eat the rest later…am stuffed (plus im wearing a swimsuit tomorrow…no need to unnecessarily bloat myself 😂)

Check in on my surgiversary people. How is everyone doing. Did post op appointment go well? How is your diet going? I am on my soft proteins only at 2oz quantities per meal. They want me to get 70 of protein and at least 800 calories a day. I still drink 1 protein shake a day. Sometimes I find myself wishing I could eat so much more than I can, but I can't find a logical reason why. It has also sucked picking out a birthday cake for my daughter knowing that cake is now a memory for me. I won't be back on a scale until Monday so I am looking forward to that. So what's new with you guys?
  14. My nutritionist told me I needed to be getting 600-800 calories and I’m on full liquids. Pretty sure that’s impossible. Thankfully puree starts on Tuesday! I’m sure I’ll feel so much better if I can get to 900 calories

    Cooking post-op

I agree. Just pick a menu item that your family likes and research it a bit. Just type low calorie blank, or low carb blank and see what comes up. That’s how I found the lower calorie nachos because someone on here posted nachos and made me want them so I searched for a lower calorie option. Then I made them even lower by using the baked chips and the reduced fat cheese. And how I learned about the sugar free bbq sauce is I was craving baby back ribs so I searched for low calorie ribs. And I found out about sweet baby rays hickory sugar free sauce on this site. It has to be the hickory one though. The original sugar free isn’t as good. I just got some ribs from my local bbq spot that are DRY and I am having them for dinner tonight with my sugar free sauce.

    Cooking post-op

I agree with starting now. If you have a handful of meals that you cook regularly ask for suggestions of calorie cutting tips or healthier options for those meals. Like for instance using frozen cauliflower crust for making pizza and topping it with chicken and veggies instead of pepperoni and real crust cuts calories and adds protein. Tacos can be made with ground Turkey and fat free cheese or made fresco style. I recently posted recipes in the recipe section for chicken and black bean nachos that I made with baked Tostito scoops and low-fat cheese and also for zucchini pizza stacks that were delicious. The pizza stacks are a little more calorie dense because of the pepperoni but you could try Turkey pepperoni to cut calories even further. I don’t recommend leaving it out alltogether I tried that and didn’t get the pizza flavor without it Little swaps, though, like Using low carb wraps anywhere you can instead of bread cuts calories. And finding sugar free and lower calorie dressings and sauces will help cut tons of calories. Also using spray Pam instead of oil to cook with or just measuring your oil and sticking to a smaller amount. During your weight loss phase you will probably have to cut down even further leaving some things off your plate but Once you get to maintenance things will get back to your new normal. I would just make a few swaps here and there to start and then a few more once those have been accepted by the family. Some things you will find don’t taste bad in lower calorie options and they are pretty painless changes. Others you may get a little grief about. 😂
  17. Going away for the weekend and i felt the need to use up all the vegetables in the fridge! Eggplant parmigiana and grilled veggie flatbread Eggplant: fried and breaded eggplant, layered with marinara sauce and mozzarella. (And yes, i sneaked in some anchovies in the marinara! Shhhhh 🤫 lol). And fresh basil leaf. Flatbread: flatbread from a package, grilled on bbq with truffle olive oil, seasoned ricotta and egg base, roasted eggplant, zucchini, yellow & orange peppers, portobello mushrooms, shallots, garlic, feta, mozzarella and balsamic glaze drizzle. And fresh basil leaves. i didn’t bother figuring out the calories because I didn’t get to eat any!!! Them fam gobbled it all up in like 10 mins before i had a chance to have a sample. Im gonna assume it was delicious.

Day 11 PO and so tired

It gets better. Took me about a month to start exercising. The liquid only part of the post op is hard because you are not getting in a ton of calories. My nutritionist wanted me to consume at least 900-1200 calories before i started to do moderate exercising.

    Iced Coffee

I must have milk or creamer in my iced coffee… I cold brew it in the fridge from time to time… there are sugar free flavor syrupyou can add… also a great monkfruit no calorie sweetener which tastes sugar to me (Splenda and the other artificial sweetener taste bitter to my taste buds)

    June 2022 surgery buddies

The transition to soft foods today hasn't been as much fun as I expected. I've had breakfast and lunch, total 400 calories, plus 44 ounces of water and I'm full!!! I guess real food is a little more filling than purees. I rarely felt full during purees. But I did really enjoy the egg beaters and refried beans I've had today. Maybe tofu for dinner if I can handle it.

    Stop loosing WAY too early

Same! Surgery on June 6th. Lost 32lbs first two weeks. Stalled every since. I'm just still plugging away following the plan. I admit I felt a little depressed about it this morning, but I know it has to start moving again at some point when I'm only eating 600 calories Sent from my SM-G986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. I do love me some meal prep! Things I’ve learned- individual Greek yogurts while more expensive are easier for “no spoon” days. I usually add homemade granola or a 100 calorie pack of nuts and fruit for a quick protein packed meal. cooking a protein bland for the first cook makes customized meals easier later. A beef roast in beef broth can later be made into shredded beef for tacos, BBQ beef, or korean beef bowls. I love soup! I’ll usually make a batch on my meal prep days and either put it in the fridge or freeze it. Scrambled eggs (so they’re still glossy and not rubbery- most people overcook scrambled eggs) are great to put into meal prep containers with a couple sausage links or patties and microwaved later in the week. Hard boiled eggs are another great option. Just peel and store in the fridge for up to a week. They’re good as egg salad or on salads. Use a lettuce knife- it’s a special knife made of nylon with serrated edges that cuts lettuce so it doesn’t oxidize. This keeps lettuce longer over the week after you prep it so it doesn’t get brown and yucky.

  24. These were really good. Tried one without the pepperoni and it didn’t really taste like pizza. Could have easily subbed Turkey pepperoni though to cut calories. https://hungryhappens.net/easy-zucchini-pizza-stacks-4-ingredients-gluten-free/

    Iced Coffee

I NEVER held coffee from myself at any point. I drink black coffee with no sweetener so it is not a calorie issue with me. I had no adverse issues with coffee and it actually helps me. I often get bored and where I may normally reach for a snack, I pour myself a cup of coffee and that satisfies the urge as well as gives me a jolt of energy. As far as decaf, I see no reason to limit that at all.
