  1. Hello, I had found out about my HH during my WLS pre-op process. They saw it in the scope. I had severe GERD for YEARS and never heard of a HH (on 2 prescriptions plus TUMS), my doctor never even looked into WHY I may have acid reflux so bad. I didn't even know it was a thing, he did say my weight doesn't help it though. Anyway, long story short. Major damage to my esophagus and a huge HH. My bariatric surgeon fixed everything during my WLS. I had bypass, I have ZERO regrets and only wish I had done it sooner. My GERD is completely cured, off all GERD medications and have eaten just about everything I would have before surgery as far as "trigger foods". Otherwise I only had slightly high blood pressure and now it is always low, sometimes even too low. So again, ZERO REGRETS! Good luck on your journey!

    October 2022 surgery support

5'10, 388lbs. Had my VSG revision to a SADI-S yesterday and am now home. Looking forward to getting my life back again.
  3. I had gastric bypass 7.5 years ago. I love my bypass and would make the same choice if I had to choose today.

    SO SCARED

I had no hair loss at all. Kept my vitamins up and was fine. Also no side effects with wind etc and I panicked before surgery thinking I’d have both. WLS Bypass is exactly what it is, you have a smaller stomach so smaller appetite. Everything else more or less stays the same. Best thing I ever done and to think I could’ve cancelled because of my fears. Go for it. It will be wonderful
  5. That's about how I got into this process too. I have SEVERE reflux and a sliding hiatal hernia. I saw a general surgeon to have a Nissen fundoplication with hernia repair. I had at that time a BMI of 43, plus OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), high cholesterol, and as my later bloodwork showed, I'm also prediabetic. This is all on top of the already crappy health I have as a result of a car accident in 1997, which totally screwed up my spine, making it very difficult to stay active and healthy. He referred me to the bariatric clinic for a combo hernia repair and RNY gastric bypass. That visit (w/ general surgeon) was back in April. I'm now more than 75% of the way through all the required clearances, dietary education, psych eval, etc I need to move forward with surgery. I'm looking at December 6 as my tentative surgery date, and truthfully, I've never been so excited. From what I've seen on here so far, the journey is long, but worth it for most folks. Setbacks can be had both pre and post op, but gotten over or around. I think a lot of it has to do with the mindset....at least it has for me. I can't speak for other people and their journeys. Everyone's different.
  6. So I just went to a general surgeon for a clinic visit bc I have a hiatal hernia and he recommended I have gastric bypass. My BMI is 44 and he said he couldn’t repair my hiatal hernia unless I did the weight loss surgery. I’m waiting for their office to call me to tell me if my insurance will cover it. I’m hopeful that I will be able to get it done and lose weight and get healthy. Does anyone have any thoughts on gastric bypass? I downloaded an audiobook about it and the author said he made this website so I joined.
  7. Hello everyone, This is my first post. I am having gastric bypass surgery tomorrow 10/19/22 and I am so nervous and excited. I can't believe that the day is almost here. I have been researching WLS for about 5 years and finally started the process about 6 months ago. I am mostly nervous about the mental challenges I will face after the surgery. Any tips for a newbie?
  8. So, I have seen a lot of people getting the revision from sleeve to bypass due to GERD and I have seen people getting the sleeve to bypass revision due to weight gain years after the original surgery. I am not experiencing either of these issues. I had my surgery in the middle of 2021. I was around 300 pounds then. It is now more than a year later. I have only lost around 70 pounds. I am still losing, but very slowly. I feel like due to my starting weight, I should have lost more than that in this time period. I am not ungrateful for the weight I have lost so far, but I want to lose much more and I am feeling a bit stagnant. I want to truly get down to a normal weight. I feel like it will take me forever to do that with the sleeve, so I want to get the gastric bypass. I feel like getting a revision to bypass would jumpstart the weight loss for me again. But I am wondering if I would even be able to get approved for a revision in my position, since I am not suffering from any other medical conditions and I haven't actually regained any of my weight. Is there anyone else in my position who has gotten a revision from sleeve to bypass so soon after the original surgery with no other medical conditions, just because they felt like they didn't lose enough weight with the original surgery?

    Lap band questions

Yeah I went through this ten years ago, when Lap Bands were still a thing. They're antiquated torture devices and I can't understand a medical doctor placing a device now that is comparable to giving a patient symptoms of an eating disorder. I would seek a second opinion about a revision at a different bariatric center about a different weight loss surgery BEFORE you have permanent damage done from the Lap Band. Best wishes to you.

    Help getting back on track

Is your blood sugar normal? Were you type 2 before the surgery? It’s hard to control cravings with these issues unless you are very careful about controlling carbs. Does the bariatric center you used have a post surgery support group? Can you schedule appointments to be followed with the dietician? Get yourself support especially from people who will help hold you accountable to yourself. I did not do this stuff the first time and regained. Now I’m getting ready for a revision and in hindsight I see what I should have done.
  11. Hi! I just got my bypass date today, 11/30/22!! I'm a roller-coaster of emotions- excited, scared, hesitant, happy, etc.

Anyone else do a VSG to ESG?

I want to get back to my original goal weight which is 135. Im 5'4" tall. I stayed between 130 and 135 for almost 7 years. I slowly gained over the past 5 years til I reached 182. On surgery day, I weighed 177. My starting weight from the very beginning was 235 so we are close in stats! I have about 30 pounds to go. I just started on regular food because my doctor put me on clears for 10 days instead of 2 days and 2 weeks for each stage after that. I have a little trouble getting all the water in but its helping me not to retain so much water. My body loves to store the water that I drink, if I dont get enough for it to decide I am not in a desert. lol. Good luck with whatever dicision you make. I am rooting for you to get to goal even if you dont have a revision. I am keeping my carbs low and protein high. They say I dont have a set goal for carbs but I try to keep it under about 40.
  13. Cool! Congratulations on your weight loss! This is very good information. I appreciate your update and response. How much are you trying to lose? For the past month I did a complete overhaul of my diet to do very low carb and low calorie diet, and high protein. I’m so glad I was able to lose 15 lbs. I have 35 lbs to go. I might put the surgery on hold until I can get my diet under control. I didn’t know that the bypass will cause anemia. Surprisingly, my GERD went away with the diet changes. 😃

Anyone else do a VSG to ESG?

Hey! I just had the ESG last month after having a VSG 11 years ago. I had gained back 45 of the 110 pounds I lost in the last few years. Im loving it so far! restored my sleeve to its original size and shortened it. Its very cost effective and only one or two days of any discomfort. I never took a pain pill. I am down 20 pounds, 15 since day of surgery 5 weeks ago. I highly recommend it! I was very strict with the rules though and just got on regular food yesterday. I am a Physician Assistant in Neurosurgery so I work in healthcare and I do not recommend the bypass. I see lots of patients with almost 100 percent regain of weight and a lot of vomiting. Not everyone, but its something to consider. The anemia is another concern with the bypass.
  15. Hey I'm having RNY Gastric Bypass on 11.29.22 (November 29, 2022) and trying to find surgery date twins! We can do this!

    October 2022 surgery support

Hello, just joined! October 18th for gastric bypass surgery. I'm still wavering due to anxiety and uncertainty about the lifestyle ahead and whether there was more i could have done. About out of time, but wish I was more excited.

    Stall on loss

I am in the same boat with you. Dr said between weeks 3-5 it will stall out then pick back up. I’m 4 1/2 weeks post bypass and only lost 16 since surgery. I have lost inches and forgot to measure before I started my journey. But I did measure a week ago so I know going forward. I did take before pictures and current pictures and can tell a difference. That what I look at to keep me going so that I won’t worry about the scale. All this protein is helping to build muscle and it weighs more than fat.

    Awful doctor experience

Thank you for sharing the info! I’ve also come to this conclusion as well. I think I was more leaning towards VSG because I know a few people who have had it, but now I do think that bypass would be a better option! Thank you for your response!
  19. So happy to hear from you Letty! Tomorrow starts my second trimester. Everything is going good so far. My weight has stabilized but I’m not gaining. My nutritionist had advised me that I need to increase my calories by like 700/day. Even with the increase in calories and Protein (averaging 80g/day) I’m keeping level. Did you have sleeve or bypass? I had bypass and I’m really really hoping that heartburn doesn’t return - ever! Hopefully the next 8 weeks go by fast for you! Sounds like you’re going to have a Christmas baby!! Yay!!

    Vitamins & Supplements?

the OP is a bypass patient - not sleeve. Not taking vitamins isn't an option for bypassers due to the malabsorption.
  21. catwoman7

    Vitamins required or not?

I think you pretty much have to with bypass because of the malabsorption component. Sleevers don't have malabsorption, so it may be different for them (depending on the person and their labs, of course...)

    Did I eat too much?

It also sheds some light on the often poor results in regards to weight loss after revision surgery (exception seems to be band to bypass; these patients often seem to have good results).

    Bad to bypass

Hi, I’m similar to you.. I although I had my band done in 2013. I’m now looking at gastric bypass. I’ve had my appointment with the GP and booked into the surgeon next month. I think it’s standard practice to do it in 2 stages.. I had the liquid taken out of my bad 18 months ago so I’m hoping they might be able to do the surgery at once.. given it may have had time to rest with out it the liquid in it. The nurse told me that they will consider once they get in there. 🤷🏻‍♀️ but talk to the surgeon and see what he says. Are you booked in? Can you ask them if all is ok once they get in there if they can do it all at once.
  24. I think it depends on your diet. If you track, are you meeting 100% of your vitamins and minerals from your diet alone? I always come up short on certain vitamins through my diet so even after years of having VSG (Before RNY revision), I took a multivitamin, sometimes calcium chews.
  25. I guess we all have somebody like that in our lives, I have a cousin who told me " I will tell you what I did when I had a horrendous belly like yours" I had to force myself to believe in her good intentions but sometimes honesty like that hurts. That was the comment that made me think on G Bypass seriously. I knew I was fat, and I think all the people who is knows it, I have always kept my opinions and comments to myself when I think they may hurt somebody, but I have to accept that sometimes even when I am trying to praise somebody I may have screwed up. Forgive and forget.
