OK, so I started my pre-op on 12/14/12, my LB surgery was 12/28/12. I've lost a total of 45 lbs so far since 12/14/12. Well, I saw my PCP on Monday 5/6. I had not seen him since February 6th. The first words out of his mouth were, you only lost. 8 lbs. since I last saw you, that's not very much. I wanted to cry, here I am thinking wow, I've lost 45 lbs in 5 months, that's pretty good or so I thought. Mind you, my band is not working because my port flipped and I'm going for revision surgery, Fri., May 10th. Anyway, I was kind of feeling down because of my primary care physician's remarks. I have no feeling of restriction or the sweet spot since my port flipped. My surgeon said he will give me a fill on Friday after he corrects the port. Just curious, am I over reacting by my PCP's comments

Hi, my surgery was 2 months ago on April 3rd. I had gastric bypass rny and since surgery, I've lost 25lbs. It seems kinda measly to me. Especially, for it to be rny. I'm seeing ppl with the sleeve or lapband losing more. I thought the weight comes off quicker with the bypass? Oh well, just so long as it comes off. I definitely feel so much better! How about you guys?

Now the Doctor Thinks a Sleeve Would be Better Then a Bypass.
Hope to Resolve posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Below is an edited version from 3 weeks ago when I was conceivably talking about getting a bypass with the medical group. Now the Doctor Thinks a Sleeve Would be Better Then a Bypass. With battling weight most of my life 10 years ago I got a lap band put in. I am now 57 years old, 15 years ago I was diagnosed with type two diabetes At the time my Lap Band was put in my weight was 230 pounds. That might not sound like a lot of weight but for a male 5’8 it was a lot for me. In addition to having type two diabetes I have also had two neck surgeries and three back surgeries over the years. The Lap Band gave me significant weight loss. I got down from 230 to 160-165. I also lowered my Metformin from 1000 mg to 500 mg. I lost approximately 70 pounds of weight and maintained this weight for about nine years. To say that it was an easy road for me would be lying, I was constantly having the band loosened tightened loose and tightened like being on a roller coaster. I had problems with the Lap Band being so tight that I was having major acid reflux problems. In addition to that I had some small ulcers around my esophagus next to my Lap Band. Last year I decided I had enough of this and had a lot of Fluid taken out of my band. The major acid reflex went away immediately however, I still have some ongoing small minor heartburn and a small cough because the Lap Band is still in place but a lot of the fluid has been taken out. Because of that removal of fluid I have gained back for the first time in 10 years 35 pounds. Now I am back up to taking the same amount of diabetic medicine Metformin 1000 mg because of the 35 pound weight gain. The bariatric center in Los Angeles is now recommending that I conceivably switch to a Sleeve. This decision is not completely final yet and the acid reflex problems I’ve had for so many years which only really developed soon after getting the Lap Band 10 years ago. As in all surgeries there are risk concerns for changing the body anatomy, any advice or opinions from anyone that has been down this same kind of road would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and concern. Hopefully one day I can help someone else. -
Not trying to lose anymore weight, but still coming off...

I agree...your body will find its new normal. When I reached my surgeons goal of 160 I started eating in maintenance mode. Mostly just added more calories, healthy fats and carbs than when I was in "losing mode". My personal goal was 150 and I hit that a month later. I then lost another 13 pounds over a couple months to my all time low of 137. I continue to eat "normal" and my body has fluctuated between 137 and 140 for the last 7 months. I'm 5'5" and am in size 6 jeans, too (down from 22). I do feel I'm a little thin, but I figure I'm in a good position in case I gain 5-10 pounds as I get further out. I had VSG, not bypass, so I don't know if this makes a difference. I have a good friend that had bypass 8 years. She worked really hard and temporarily got down to a size 4, but once she let herself eat "normal", she bounced back up to a size 7/8 and has been there for at least 5 years. -
Dear all, I am really so happy to find this forum. I was sleeved in 9 December 2019 in Germany and everything was so perfect for me so far. My Dr told me that after two months i should reduce the pills of PPI slowly. i really did so. It is my fifth month so far and i cannot reduce for more than one pill 40mg for each three days. I really tried a lot but it does not work. in the third day i start feeling some slight pain in my stomach and others i have slight pain in my tonsils. Anyone had a similar story? i am really afraid of having a chronic GERD and then converting to bypass. A last question is about weight loss. since two months my weight loss is very slow. It is a kilo and a half or two kilos maximum. Does it mean that i will not reach my goal? I was 146 kilo. Now i am 114 Thanks a lot

I've had both a sleeve and now a bypass. I am struggling with not overeating because there is no full feeling with my RNY. With my sleeve it was very clear when I should stop eating, but not with RNY. I am back to measuring portions.

6 Months Post Op and I have gained 2 lbs.! Why would this happen so soon?
casper510 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I had bypass April 1st. I steadily lost weight ever since and have been so happy. I am eating and doing same activities and all of a sudden I see the scale going the other way? I am down 68 lbs so far but need to lose another 45. Could I have stretched my pouch already? I have been feeling a little hungrier lately. Anyone out there have some advice to talk me off the ledge? -
Anybody from mandurah in WA?

I am going through the same now that I'm on full solids. The weight loss has slowed to about .5-1kg per week. Which is not anything to write home about but still great for me.. Also I like the idea of the weight falling off gradually rather than the drastic loss caused by Roux En Y gastric bypass coz it's less likely to draw the wrong kind of attention from people you don't want to share your sleeve journey with. I'm sure there are many out there who think this option is the lazy way out who don't appreciate how hard this whole process is and also the risks involved... I am quite happy to shed 1Kg per fortnight and be at my goal weight by the end of the year with no silly questions asked and not falling under scrutiny -
41 years old and torn between sleeve and RNY... any advice?
Jelko7t3 replied to Jelko7t3's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I guess my concern is the recovery time, I was expecting 2 weeks for the sleeve. Is the recovery time for the bypass the same? I have my surgery so carefully planned out around work... -
41 years old and torn between sleeve and RNY... any advice?
jomamacita7 replied to Jelko7t3's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm doing gastric bypass....because of the amount of weight I have to lose and my comorbidities: pre-diabetic, high blood pressure, sleep-apnea. I just feel like I need the malabsorption to get where I need to go. That's my personal choice and my surgeon agrees with me. -
Can't Shake The Depression
E-girl replied to ljperez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am soooo sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time. I think most people go through a little of what you are experiencing. I had regrets for the first 6 months. I couldn't really talk about it with anyone because I didn't want people (friends and family) to say "I told you so!" When I spoke to my sugeon and NUT, they said part of it is the changes and mourning of food and part of it will be from changes in mood due to the sudden weight loss (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gastric-bypass/MY00825/METHOD=print). My best friend has bypass and she said she was depressed for about 12 month after having the surgery. Even though she looked great and lost 100+ lbs, she said it took her a long time to except the new eating life style. She really didn't have anyone who could relate to what she was going through because 10 years ago there weren't as many resources. For me, it was 6 months. When I finally got into a small shirt and 4 pants, I realized that I couldn't change the past...I couldn't undue what I have done...I can only go forward. It's now 9 months. I can't say that I don't feel bad every once in awhile but its not everyday any more. You have to remember this is a huge change for us. You are trying to re-learn how to eat and live healthy after years of bad habits, which is not easy but soon you will see the rewards. When you are feeling bad, try to think about the reasons why your did it in the first place and think about all the cool new things you are going to be able to do that you couldn't do before. In 6 months, your family and friends aren't going to recognize you. Blog about how you feel, if you don't have anyone close to talk too...believe me you are soooooo not alone. -
When to transition from liquids to soft foods
Mark.olypenn replied to Mkak6's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely follow your doctor's direction and what your body will tolerate. My doctor and nutritionist prescribe to the 2-2-2 Plan; 2 weeks Full Liquids, 2 weeks Pureed Foods; 2 weeks Soft Foods. My RNY revision surgery was Feb 27 and my first post op appointment was yesterday. I received the green light to transition to Pureed Foods at end of the week. I had Lap Band surgery in 2005, and I know I made some mistakes and took some liberties following the post op diet, paid for it. I am determined this time to follow the program to avoid the pain and discomfort pushing the diet calendar to get to mainstream foods. -
You need to give exercise a good 4 to 6 weeks to show results. It might take even longer than that. The best motivation is not only losing weight and toning your body, but you will also have more energy and sleep better and you will be doing good things for your body overall. I don't mean to be rude, but if you wanted overnight success, you should have had gastric bypass. With that said, I think the elliptical machine is a very effective way to work out. You need to spend at least 30-45 minutes on it and you should aim for 5 days a week. I've had a lot of ankle problems, so I've been swimming 5 days a week.

I had the sleeve 9 years ago and now have to have the bypass due to GERD, hiatal hernia, esophogitis, and Cameron lesions. I have weight that I gained and need to lose and now I’m worried about not feeling full after the bypass.

So I got the call on Friday I was approved for RNY surgery. I feel like I have come a long way in the past few years. I originally had lapband surgery in 2011. My highest weight was 360lbs ( I think?) and around 336lb surgery day. I went as low as 259lbs in 6 months and that was it. My band was never adjusted in a way where I felt restriction. Then due to insurance and financial issues I left the first Dr I had. I had continous pain at port site and in my stomach. The weight slowly started to creep back on then more quickly. I gained almost every pound back. I felt like a failier and that I had wasted my chance. All the food that were healthy were the hardest to eat andI reverted to high cal slider foods. I had lost the mindset I developed that helped me lose the weight initially. So in Nov of 2012 I found a new doctor ( came highly recommended by several people) and had a consult. I spent almost a year after thinking about my decision. In June I started to see my private dr to do the required 6month appt and started to see my cardiologist and etc. (I had many cardio visits and tests due to a heart condition I had in pregnancy) Anyway in Oct 2013 I had my band removed. My new Dr is one of those who follow the practice of not doing a revision in one surgery. ( which, although I was disappointed was the best decision because I had tons on scar tissue) So after all that I am glad to say I was approved last Friday!! : ) I had my last pre op appoint today and tomorrow starts the liquid diet which I am so nervous about. I mean I guess I gotta do what it takes cuz my dr says he will not do surgery till I drop 20 lbs.It will most likely be in March. ( a week after my B day! ) I am looking forward to this new chapter and lifestyle but I still feel like I'm morning food instead of my old fat body ( and its inconveniences) SOO Anyway thats me...Any tips and advise would be more than welcome.

Insurance requires 6 month physician visit...
tink128 replied to Kimmie's topic in Insurance & Financing
I was denied because 3 years ago GHI PPO did not allow any type of gastric surgery for weight loss except a gastric bypass. I even went thru the appeal process and was denied again. Dr Kwon was my Dr and he is a leading guy in the area of ins approval for the lap band in the upstate NY area so I know I was with the best. Now I have GHI HMO and I know they approve the surgery so hopefully the last 12 months of documented dieting with my OBGYN will suffice. I have an intake/seminar appt on the 14th so I will again be in the process of getting approved. I have tried 8 years of dieting, pills, antidepressants, getting prayed over, etc etc etc just like pretty much everyone else who has now decided this surgery is the last hope. Thank you for the info I will be taking it into the appt next week! -
Revision 8/14. Apparently my body was allergic to my lapband because I always had so much gunk in my throat and nose I could barely eat and when I did it came right back out. I’m 2 weeks post-op and I haven’t had sinus issues AT ALL..... until the Texas wind blew in and now I am throwing everything up. UGH!!!! And this is the week I could finally move to purée foods DANG IT!!

2 Very Different Vsg Philosophies -- What's Yours?
Fyrefly replied to Fyrefly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not familiar with Optifast, so I don't know what their program is. I'm just talking about the actual prescribed diet given to many VSG and Bypass patients where I live. And I was vegan for three years after a cancer scare and had no issues with food intolerances when I decided to start eating meat and dairy again. -
First Follow Up Appointment Today!
SharonRHughes posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today is my first post surgery appointment. It has been 11 days. Minimal pain. Not a lick of nausea. I have been so lucky! Can't wait to see if I am doing as well as I feel. I has lap band to sleeve revision. Best thing I have ever done! Hope you are all doing well!! -
Msmaui, I'm sorry to hear that. It must be a real disappointment for you. Are you going to have a revision? As for the comment about the lotto...( for the newbies) you have twice as much chance of being struck by lightening than winning the lotto ( big $ I mean) I believe the chances to live with a successful band story are much greater than that. Best wishes to you.

You should look into the sleeve. The bypass is serious stuff. The band works great - but if you don't get a handle on your issues with food, you may have complications - especially if you are an emotional eater! Sure there are ways to go around the band to get what you want with food - but is that the reason you get the band in the first place?? The most healthy outlook about the band is this: The band provides 50% assistance in weight loss. You provide the other 50% by sticking to the plan and not eating things that go against the band, causing distended pouch, esophagus issues and slippage. I speak from experience and I know, first hand, that all my problems with the band that I am going through right now (I am scheduled for band removal) are as a direct result of my food intake and not paying attention. Yea, I am disappointed in myself - but if I had it to do over again.....I would learn as much as possible prior to band about food/band, I would get treatment for food issues (too many people don't like to admit this one) and I would join a HEAHTLY support group, not one that everyone sits around talking about ways to "get around the band".... I wish you luck. The band truly does work - but you have to do your part...seriously. Don't get lax! Take it seriously - and I also heard there is a new band coming out in June that will replace the old one. Look into it. My message speaks of my experience ONLY. Take what you want and leave the rest. Just remember....never stop trying... the band should be your friend and not your enemy.
-
I believe it can be a side effect of both. Although less severe for the sleeve and most severe for the bypass. I have the sleeve and I've have very little candy but I did eat three Hershey's kisses on day and felt terrible. I had to lay down for hours to get myself together. Head was spinning, I was dizzy no diarrhea thankfully but I learned my lesson

Anyone getting sleeved 3/22?
HeatherE replied to arrington0711's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m having Bypass March 22. Started a two week liquid diet yesterday and it’s HARD! -
I have heard of this happening from being on this site for awhile. And most of what I have heard from the people with a band who have joined this site its because they are getting a revision to a sleeve. That was my deciding factor to not go with the band because I keep hearing people having problems later on. I wish it wasn't so and maybe we are just hearing all the issues on this site and not hearing the success stories (in regards to the band).

Getting the bypass today and super nervous! They are prepping me now and freaking lol. Wish me luck!
