Hello Carol, welcome into the forum. So that we can help you we need a little more information. How much did you loose pre surgery? What is your weight now? What are you eating, how many calories a day are you having? Next to your name at the top of the page is a little drop down box where you can fill your information in if you wish

Is the reason you can't gain weight is because of your eating disorder? Or is because the limits of your sleeve? If it is anorexia or bulemia, then I believe only the therapist can really help you want to eat more calories to gain weight. However, if it is because of the sleeve limitations, perhaps your surgeon can determine if there is a physical problem. I want to give you hints on how to gain weight but because you mentioned an eating disorder, I am a bit confused.
-
If you find you are having a hard time not restricting with the smaller portions you have to eat with the sleeve, add a higher calorie meal replacement shake in between meals (don't actually replace a meal, but if you eat 3x a day, have the full calorie meal replacement as a 4th meal). Also, maybe add a snack in there somewhere if you haven't already.

Try adding snacks. It was the only way I could slow my weight loss after I reached my goal but was unable to eat a recommended portion size. I did it with the support of my dietician & chose foods that were nutritionally sound. I still snack to reach the calories I need to maintain but not as often as I did initially because I can usually eat a portion size now. So snacking would help you increase your calories to gain. You could also graze on your left overs - finish your lunch portion for afternoon tea - which would satisfy your dietician’s advice. Try adding another serve of whole/multigrain carbs, another serve of fruit, a protein bar, cheese, yoghurt, chia pudding, hummus, etc. You can snack on raw vegetables too. I found some baked fava beans & chick peas snacks (which are handy when travelling too). I added powdered milk to milk to enrich (it becomes sweet though so I only did it when making chia pudding). I also used non diet dressing on salads. I know it can be challenging because you may not feel hungry or feel like eating & you likely don’t want to establish bad food & eating habits again either. I know that’s how I felt & still feel. Ask your dietician for more specific suggestions than just eat more especially when you physically can’t. All the best.

Could add a daily calorie enhanced drink to your meal plan. Ensure is higher calorie. Doesn’t require increase in portion for that at least.

Doubting Whether I Should Proceed
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to djhobbes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think it's good that you have control while on your pre op diet. It indicates that if you choose to go forth with your surgery, you can be very successful. The pre op diet is meant, as others said, to be temporary as a means to shrink your liver so that surgery is safe. A diet that is that low in calories, if maintained long term will only do harm to your metabolism, and slow it down. Weight loss surgery is a way to stop dieting and live a healthy life without harming our metabolisms and bodies. The choice is ultimately yours whether or not to have surgery. And I read your response about the family member that has issue with your choice to look into weight loss surgery. They themselves seem to have "food issues" if they look at food as an "emotional experience" You do what you feel is best for you, because it's your life and you are the one that will live with your decision. Weight loss surgery is very liberating imo. You don't necessarily have to give up anything, (but do follow any guidelines your team has for you ie: soda is one my team doesn't want me having) you eat smaller portions of foods and feel satisfied. Best wishes! -

Allergic to artificial sweetener
LookingForward22 replied to Flikka's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don’t feel well with artificial sweeteners either (digestive). My nutritionist suggested using juice (no sugar added) and some purées to experiment with making my own popsicles and jello (using unflavored gelatin). She also suggest trying items that use Erythritol (sugar alcohol) to see if I tolerate those. I haven’t gotten around to the Erythritol… but the juice popsicles I’ve made so far were good. I’m still working out the mix. My first batch was 8oz of white grape peach juice (100% juice no sugar added) and 8 oz of water flavored with 1 tsp of SodaStream Peach Bubly drops (no calories no carbs) and freeze them in popsicles molds. I’m still tweaking the amount of bubly drops to get the strength of flavor I want. The first batch was ok, but I think I can improve it. I’m also working with fruit purée and other flavors - but I figure once I get one flavor dialed in, the others will be easier to replicate. My pre-op diet starts Aug 8th and my surgery is Aug 16th so I’m trying to experiment now, so hopefully I will have a few batches ready to go when I need them. Best of luck! -
3 weeks is about my max for such a calorie restriction before I go mad and either bang my head against the wall or order everything off the taco bell menu . Even though I'm not officially on my pre-op diet until the 9th of August I've certainly been eating better the last week or so having the carrot of surgery dangling in front of me. I have. I'm down 8 lbs since starting it. First 6 days I was losing about .5-1 lb and then I started to stall out. I gained about 1 lb back in water weight within 3 days then started to see the scale drop again the other day. The scale going up was frustrating considering how few calories we are taking in but I knew what was causing It so didn't let it get to me too much. I know the point of it isn't to lose weight but it is a way of showing our liver is shrinking so I was stepping on the scale daily. I also have a scale that checks other things so it's nice to see those numbers move as well. Day of surgery I will step on the scale one last time for a while. Thanks for all the positive vibes. : )

I play so, so much Beat Saber, probably 5+ hours a week. To mix things up and increase intensity, I step in time to the the music. It takes a little finagling to set up on your machine, but there's a huge community of people who create mods and custom songs for the game. There's a style of song mapping called "fitbeat" that includes a lot more squats, dodging, and reaching to increase your effect, but I usually just play the sorts of music I listened to in high school and college. I use exercise as mood regulation as well as physical health, so sometimes I like to pick music that fits my mood. (I have a lot of very loud metal songs for when I'm angry, lol.) But usually I make a "playlist" by searching my library of 300+ songs with whatever the first 2 letters of that days' wordle answer was. If you're a numbers-focused person, on the Oculus there's a movement/calorie tracking app that I find very motivating. It's probably not super accurate because it only accounts for arm movement, but ... I like numbers.

I apologize for this because I know it’s been talked about a million times. BUT seriously I am at my wits end. I am 9 weeks out from RNY and just stuck. I lost 25 prior to surgery, 27.9 since surgery now under 200 @ 197.6. The scale won’t move. I am not breaking the rules, I am getting 60-80 grams of Protein a day, drinking 80 or more oz of Water per day. Carbs hanging in between 30-70. I’m killing it at the gym. I CrossFit 3-4 times a week and walk several miles on my off days. I reached out to my team and she planned for a call next week. She did mention maybe I wasn’t getting enough carbs, maybe needing like 100-150 on CrossFit days! Any experience with this? Seems like a lot and I’ve always been sensitive to carbs so I’m hesitant to try. However if I need that to get back to burning I’ll do it. Calories are never over 800-900 a day. Usually hang in the 700 range. Any advice from a CrossFitter or anyone who has been through this is much appreciated

Oh I love reading this thread - we all have different approaches and they're all valid. I told my husband and children, my work manager because I needed time off and couldn't lie, and nobody else, and am not going to. I do get the occasional twinge of guilt when family and friends comment on my weight loss but as far as they are concerned I am 'strictly calorie counting' (which technically speaking isn't a lie). I would rather live with that occasional guilt than deal with/respond to their reactions, whether supportive or critical. I don't like a fuss. That's just me though. To each their own Good luck whatever you decide.

Welcome and good luck with your journey Steve. You will get so much support and information on this forum, it's been an absolute lifesaver for me. Post plenty and get to know folks. There'll be an August surgery thread on the sleeve forum you should join so you get to chat with people at the same stage. You won't regret this - the pre-op diet is rough for some people (and 3 weeks is a long one) but for me it honestly wasn't bad at all - have done 800 calorie diets so many times in my life and this was a means to a very wanted end! Best of luck, I hope it all goes smoothly for you

Reminds me of two myths: 1) WLS is the easy way out. (It's definitely not easy, It is a great tool but it takes dedication and hard work. A lifelong battle. Your husband will see that as you progress through your journey. Maybe he will come to understand what we are up against.) 2) WLS is a magic pill. (WLS only works long term if you work at it. Some people aren't willing to do what it takes which is their choice but their weight loss will cease early. Guessing calories is usually inaccurate so tracking nutrition helps see why or why not one is losing weight.).

Not quite what you asked but, by far my favorite has been collagen/Bone broth powder, 20g protein for 20g powder 90 calories, and unlike whey protein, it doesn't curdle at high temps. Has a very mild "dusty" flavor which you can't taste at all, I put it in everything, coffee, soups (broth, tomato, chicken), recipes with sauce like pulled pork, cooked fruit, apple sauce, mashed potato, jelly(jello), spagettios, beans. You name it I add it. 3 weeks out I was having it added to mashed potato, strained chicken noodle and broth a lot (plans vary). Protein shake-wise, not sure if you have it in the US but I like Ufit shakes a lot, especially the Fudge Brownie. Grenade is more calorie-dense but there very good. No premier protein in the UK always jealous as it's the most youtube recommended.

It’s likely not a stall because you’ve been plateaued for so long. Stalls usually last 1-3 weeks You may have reached your body’s set point. The weight at which your body is happiest &/or your consuming the calories your body needs to function at this weight. I ate 1300 calories & maintained at 49kg for a good year. I eat 1400 calories now (because of additional protein) & maintain at 51kg. Like @catwoman7 said you could lose more if you reduced your calories (& upped your activity) but is a lower intake sustainable? Only you know that. And remember not everyone reaches a healthy BMI. (BMI should be used as a guide not a rule anyway.) it’s got to be a weight that healthy for you & your life. But, have a chat with your dietician & see what advice they can offer.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Lilypop replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Been 3 years out from my 2019 surgery, I lost originally 109 pounds weighed about 147 pounds and that was after my skin removal surgery. Then I peaked up back to 169 now currently and I am very comfortable at this weight. I don’t look like I’m dying since I was soo skinny looking because I’m super tall about 5”11. I do occasionally eat pizza and some rice here and there but I’m back to normal eating. I don’t have big plates but I don’t much often and if I do I weigh the snacks and use the calories to the T. It’s true what they say that you gain about 20 pounds or so after a few years but again I’m healthy and have managed my weight consistently around 169ish for the past two years now so I suggest people don’t beat yourself up because of it. Doesn’t help I’m over the whole 30 years old and your body starts to slow… that’s very very true. But even with it I’m okay. It was not always rainbows though… I do have days where I will experience dumping, and my nutritionist said that gaining the 20 pounds was better for me because after surgery for a whole year I had been in and out of the hospital for low blood pressure, fainting and my heart rate would drop below 50 bpm so since then I have yet (thank god) to be back in the hospital. So I would say it’s really a mind set for how you take this tool your given and use it to fit your life not anyone else’s. mentality it is a challenge because I wish the surgeries didn’t leave huge scars which I would show if anyone wanted to see how the fleur de lis surgery looks like. But in all I look at it as I can fit my clothes, look good in them and I feel amazing most days 😁 I hope I wasn’t too all over the board with my experience lol -
My biggest issue is lack of energy. Working on increasing calorie count and water intake.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Spinoza replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi guys - we've done 8 months now, how are you all doing? I like this thread because I can look back and see my journey - never did a thread all to myself. All good here - I'm 8 months and a week post op, current weight 173 and total loss 103lbs. BMI 25.5. In the last month I have averaged a loss of 1.25lbs a week, which I'm thrilled with. Ideally I would love to lose another stone but that's in the lap of the gods. Either way I'm extremely happy to have had this procedure. Eating a bit more (volume-wise) in the last few weeks as my hunger has properly returned now - it never really left, but I had a few weeks of what I called full-hunger, when I had eaten what would have filled me up before but it just didn't any more, even if I waited 40 minutes or so, so I've been upping the portion sizes - just a little - and I'm feeling properly full again. I suspect this is going to be a pattern until I reach my new weight. I'm eating more or less all foods now - still protein first veg second most of the time but I have had occasional bread, no pasta no rice but a small slice or two of pizza etc. and it's all sitting well with me. Trying to average 1200 calories a day still but at weekends I go over that and I'm not beating myself up about it. Would love to hear from you all - or at least the people who are still visiting this board 8 months on. Hope you're having the time of your lives - I certainly am. -
Day 1 Liquid Diet
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to MikeC19's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Day 1-3 were the worst for me. By day 4 I found a routine that worked and my body settled in. I had a very strict 2 week liquids only, which was ROUGH, but I survived and was really proud of myself for being compliant. Agree with others - use the calories you're given! Don't skimp. It'll be over before you know it! -
I am 11 months post op and I seem to have stopped losing. I am still exercising and counting calories but nothing seems to move the weight lately. I lost about 113 pounds which is great but was hoping for just a bit more to get below a bmi of 25
-
revisions always seem to be slower than virgin surgeries. That said, you can always lose more weight by cutting calories....I mean if you're willing to do that (I know I could lose more by cutting them, but evidently I'm not willing to do that because here I sit....still 10-ish lbs heavier than what I want to be...)
-
I found it hardest when I wasn’t using my allowed calories(my stomach felt like it was going to eat itself 🤣). My doctor said no more than 1200 calories, so I decided to use them. I stick to the general breakfast, lunch, and dinner schedule. When I get moderately hungry I’ll have a protein shake. So far I haven’t gone over 1100 calories.

Lost 80 lbs pre surgery
JourneyOfRabia replied to Stillnotsure's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think you should get the surgery done. I was sort of in similar boat few YEARS ago. Basically I finally build the courage to go with the surgery and started my research and started to lose some weight I think it was 40lbs and then though oh if I can lose this much I don’t need surgery. I was wrong. Soon I hit a stall and to move the stall I was told to have some extra carbs and calories and then it was just so hard. I regret not getting the surgery. so few years later I’m back on researching gastric bypass and scheduled my seminars at 2 hospitals.
