    Newbie *waves* (cross post)

Hi there, I am going through the process of band to sleve revision. I am excited but very nervous about surgery this time. I am a adoptive mom of two beautiful boys and I just feel nervous. I have been banded since 12/09 and have only lost about 45 lbs. my sister had a very bad time with her band and finally had to have it removed. I haven't had any major concerns with my band like she had. I have never had heartburn or my band break like her. We just can't find a sweet spot for me and my band. I am worried that I may have a lot of heartburn with the sleeve even though I haven't really had any to speak of with the bad. I just want better results. What are some of the possible side effects from band to sleeve revision, and have any of you experienced them?
  2. I actually posted this in another forum, but realized it would have been a better fit here, so thought I'd introduce myself. Hi there! I'm new here to the site. My name is Kari and I'm 30 years old from Michigan. I've been researching WLS for the last year and officially started this process this past January 2013. Initially, I started out thinking I was going to have the Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, however after meeting my surgeon for the first time and going over my labs, it was discovered that I am very anemic and he felt that the RNY would not be a good option for me as in the long-term it will cause me more health problems than what it's worth. I completely trust his judgment, therefore I will be going with the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy! (And in all honesty, I feel better about this choice for some reason). Thankfully we have been blessed with great health insurance through my husband's employer, and they cover the surgery, no questions asked, no pre-approval. I just have to do everything my bariatric program requires, and I'm good to go. Next week I do my psych evaluation, and the following week I will do my exercise consultation. Sometime after that I will meet with a cardiac doctor to get surgery clearance, and have another visit with my surgeon. On that day I will also get to schedule my surgery. I'm excited and nervous, and I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions along the way! My highest weight ever was 320 lbs. My starting weight for this process was 311 and my current weight is 294. I look forward to getting to know many of you here! Thanks for allowing me to introduce myself! - Kari

    How To Make This Decision?

I had my revision on September 10th. Besides all of the weight loss issues you have, I do believe that the band is NOT forever and sooner or later you will have to get it removed. So what would you do? I will bet that without the band you will have a significant increase in hunger and most likely food intake. I say go with the sleeve, remove your band(keep for a souvenir) and see what happens with the sleeve, all you have to lose is weight!

    How To Make This Decision?

Okay, so the "reason" that the sleeve will work - beyond the portion control - is because of the insulin resistance issue going away. I had not heard this, but it makes some sense although I don't understand the reasons that a smaller stomach causes this. I have had fasting blood sugar of just under 100 for many many years - borderline. My A1C was in the pre diabetes range. The first bloodwork post surgery at 3 months showed a tremendous drop - my fastiing blood sugar was more like 77. I thought it was due to my dietary changes only, but I NEVER saw that drop when i was doing weight watchers and lost quite a bit of weight. Maybe there is something about the sleeve that helps with the insulin issue. I guess I would still be skeptical, BUT, what I do know is that for many of us it only takes eating a little bit more then we should to keep the weight on. Maybe the shift in insulin response is enough to help? So, although I am a sleeve advocate, I am not sure about the strategy of planning another revision if it doesn't work. Ask your surgeon, but I thought that each successive WLS increases risk of serious complications. If I didn't believe in the sleeve, I would go straight for the RNY or more like the DS (although THAT is a scary procedure!).

    MARCH SLEVERS

I went to dr on Mach 13 and my surgery is march 25th. When I went in, I was going to get the bypass but my doctor feels the sleeve is just as good. I hope I lose all the weight I need to. Can people tell me why they chose the sleeve?

    Hurt to swallow?

I had some pain when swallowing right after surgery.. Each day got better and I would say by day 4 it was pretty much gone. Is the pain in your throat or down further? If it's a strep or sore throat pain it could be from when you were intubated. My pain was down further and it was from the swelling. Because you were a revision patient you probably have more swelling.. Give it a few more days and you should feel better... Good Luck!

  8. What are you guys eating after 6 weeks from bypass surgery? Would you guys share a typical day? I struggling with food, or shakes, I don't have any strictures or problem, just my stomach can take certain food, and I get full very fast, I'm not taking 60gr of protein. I'm feeling very discouraged.
  9. So excited we leave tomorrow morning for Oahu! My hubby and I are going for our 24th anniversary and packing my suitcase I was giddy with excitement! I tried on all my "dream" dresses (I bought 10 dresses a year ago hoping one day I could wear them. All a size 8) and I am going to toot my own horn here but I look fantastic lmao! My hubby is gonna freak when he sees me in them. I am 12 pounds from goal. Hoping I lose an inch to fit in my "dream" New Year's Eve dress I bought lol. I am so happy I revised from band to bypass! (I was successful with the band-lost 120 but was about 20 pounds heavier than I am now and could never get below that- it eroded so revised to bypass) I am 6 months out from my revision and 70 down (had to gain 50 to be eligible for the bypass ) have a wonderful day everyone and happy December!
  10. Anyone one else having a revision band to sleeve on that date or first WLS surgery? My doctor is dr. Manuel Castro in Dallas and Hospital is Forest Park Medical Cemter in Dallas. We can be surgery buddies. Then join in with the Febuary Sleevers.

    Surgery tomorrow

Best of luck! I am scheduled for May 1st for my revision. Let me know how it goes.
  12. I was banded with plication in August 2012. I have had two fills so far. I have not lost any weight since November. I follow my diet, exercise etc. Now I am having pain in my stomach and left side around to my back. It gets worse when I eat. I went throught Dr. Wilkenfeld in Conroe and am finding out that he doesn't really care about you after your surgery. Is it too soon to consider another surgeon and possibly a revision to sleeve? Will another surgeon even see me? I wish I knew what I know now about him before using him and having the lapband. He talked me out of the sleeve and I wish I had just changed doctor's then.

    Band to sleeve in one?

For me blue cross covered either the removal or the revision due to complications. But once removed you would be starting fresh and need to be approved for the procedure.that means going through all the steps. For my revision the only thing I needed to go through was a demonstrated complication. Nothing else mattered. No BMI or weight or comorbidities needed.

    Hello all.

Oh Amie I am so excited for you! What an exciting year!!! And if that baby can hold on one day longer it could share my birthday!! I know one of my biggest motivating factors in revising my complete flop of a band to a sleeve (aside from its many complications) is my desire to be a more active and parent! Congratulations on your sleeve, your marriage (shameful that we have to put significance on it being legal, but so exciting all the same) and even more so, the beginning of your family! Such an exciting time! Look forward to watching your progress!!!

    Hello all.

I am not scheduled until May 11th, but so far I am so confident in my choice with Dr. Garcia that even I can't believe it!! I am paying $5500, but that is with consideration for my revision, so I have heard that others are paying even less!! I will definitely keep in touch and let you know how it goes in May, but I have heard the most amazing things from so many people who have used him and I researched quite a few different doctors before settling on him! I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you guys can get a house this year too. My husband and I were able to get a house again after he had to foreclose on his old home due to his divorce. My family had to help us, but the feeling of having a place of our own for our kids to grow up in has been such a wonderful feeling!! I really hope you can add that to your whirlwind blessing windfall!!
  16. I did not have to do this for the LAP-BAND® since I paid cash but when I wanted to get the gastric bypass, my insurance company made me go through this. They want to see if you can lose weight the conventional way before they approve your surgery. Helen Did you have gastric bypass and lapband? Which one did you have first? What happened?

Stall at 6 weeks Post Op ?

I was 229 at my 3 week checkup (down 21 pounds) and I'm still not out of the 220s at 6 weeks out. I'm a band to sleeve revisions and I know I'm not getting enough Protein so I'm pretty sure that's my problem. I've started making better effort at my protein intake and started running so maybe that'll kick start my loss... I go for my next appointment next week and I'm hoping to be officially down 35 pounds (5 pounds per week)...that'll put me at 215. I guess I'll have to see! I know I need to force feed myself at least one Protein shake a day, but can't seem to at the moment since my liquid phase ended... I think you are doing great, especially at such a low start weight. Good luck with your goals! Crystal
  18. You need to maybe have medications changed out for GERD and If that MD not wanting to help with Sleeve or Bypass get somebody’s else., For me Cov19 hit and nothing was open or working and before that I was having major issues with GERD and Sleeve issues and Never Again Use Service with Beverly Hills Physical Group in Los Angeles for Sleeve or Bypass or Plastic Surgery never again very bad place., things got Delayed and I find New Team of MD who know their business and Care., you have to get another team of MD and Education your self and drink water by slip and eat slow and get help asap.,
  19. The first weeks after my band surgery (I'm revising soon due to a slip) 3 1/2 yrs ago, I would go into Alberstons 2-3x a week to stock up on tomato soup, jello, popsicles, etc. Everytime I'd walk thru the door, the smell of the deli fried chicken would get me. I swore every single time I walked in that very chicken would be my first "real" meal. It wasn't. Know your pain!

Confused. Can we or cant we..?

A lot of the "rules" have to do with certain foods that are a) really unhealthy or b)can be trigger foods for other bad eating habits. Realistically, there isn't really a lot of foods that you "can't" eat. Carbonation can make you uncomfortable, high fat food and high sugar foods might make you nauseous. Alcohol and coffee are typically not great on a perfectly intact stomach, so a surgically modified stomach has more chances for additional problems, plus all the empty calories. All these things do not happen to everyone and a lot of these so called rules apply to those that had bypass surgery and may not necessarily lend themselves to the sleeve surgery. I really don't have a problem eating or drinking anything. However, I have made a commitment to be as healthy as possible, using the surgery as a tool to restrict my caloric intake. I might have a different mindset than a lot of people that feel that eliminating certain foods or drink, is denying things in their life that they must have. You are going to get a lot of answers to this question, just like you will get a lot of answers about diet, exercise, activities post op etc. Every Dr. seems to follow a different playbook. Really there seems to be no real fast rules to anything post op. My suggestion is to follow faithfully what you Dr and nutritionist plan out for you. That way you have the proper support system in place and they can answer your questions in a way that makes the best sense for you particular situation.

    My biggest fear!

The stomach ulcer surgery is closer to the RNY but without the intestinal bypass. Apparently ulcer tend to happen closer to th pylorus. You can look up billroth I and ii
