    Nutritionalist consult

My 2 week pre-op diet was 3-4 shakes a day with no more than 200 calories each and minimum 15g of protein, celery and cucumbers, and 1-2 cups of chicken or beef broth a day. Absolutely NO popsicles or sugar free jello. I would constantly be shaving celery with a peeler into “noodles” and then adding it to the broth for a soup of sorts. AND I was super lucky enough to do it twice in an 8 month period. 😂 (needed a hernia repair surgery that was coupled with a VSG to RNY revision to reduce chances of future hernias.)

Some programs encourage a bit of low level "carb loading" post op to counter the fatigue and lethargy that many experience after surgery. Oatmeal, cream of wheat, refried beans - as appropriate for different phases - and dilute fruit juices are common for those programs. They often suggest diluted juice, both to cut down the sugar and calorie hit, and also pure fruit juice might be a bit of a sugar shock to the system that has been purged of it pre-op. Our program didn't have any pre-op diet requirements other than the usual day before surgery thing, but insurance required six months of a "medically supervised" diet and exercise program, which for us was just a self directed effort documented by our PCP with roughly monthly visits. I didn't do anything special that I had not been doing the previous few years in what was essentially a WLS maintenance lifestyle (my wife had her WLS several years before, so were already in the habit.)

    July 2022 peeps!

She has not mentioned it to me in my two appointments with her and it's not even talked about in my menu/nutrition plan. In a FAQ she sent me last week, it says calories needed depend on gender, age and activity level, but a general rule of thumb is around 1,000 calories a day. The FAQ does not say when to start the "1,000 per day" thing, but I find it somewhat difficult during the liquid phase and I plan to build up to it as I increase my activity level. In the meantime, I'm concentrating on the 90g protein and 64oz fluid/water.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi, kevin! Did your dietitian set the calorie range? Mine won't. She told me to work on getting 60-90 g of protein. I'm averaging about 700 cal a day. Losing about 1-2 lbs a week. I did lose 10 lbs the first 10 days. Have lost 18 lbs since I started liquid diet 6 weeks ago. Made my first goal of 225 already. I was 252 on my first appointment last June.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hey y'all. I just wanted to post a Three-week update. I feel good. Pretty much normal even. Except, of course, with a smaller stomach capacity Incisions are fully closed. The small ones look good and only the largest still has any leftover scabbing. I'm trying to stay positive since I've lost more than 20 pounds since surgery. But my weight loss progress has slowed more than I thought it would this early. Maybe it's the third week stall we keep hearing about. W1: -12.6 lbs W2: -5.6 lbs W3: -2.6 lbs My conservative diet plan sucks, but it improves a little this week, since I can add cottage cheese, shredded cheese, beans, canned fruit and some specific well-cooked veggies (only carrots and asparagus look appetizing). I am logging everything. I am getting 80-100g of protein, 50-90 oz of water/fluids, and 650-750 calories daily. I have not done great on my steps/walking/exercise, but plan to fix that this week now that things at work has calmed a bit. I have now lost a total of 48.6 lbs since I started losing weight in late March when I had my "Oh Hell No!" moment and contacted the surgeon's office. I am feeling pretty good about that.

    Food Before and After Photos

Super proud of my lunch earlier today. 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, spinach and mushrooms. 267 calories, 22g protein, 5 net carbs. Dinner on the other hand? Sigh, ended up eating only half. Sesame soy sauce tofu with kimchi, zucchini, and scallions with gochujang (the carbs in this are insane!) for 192 calories, 9g protein and 8net carbs. I did end up looking up several keto gochujang recipes so I’ll probably make and use one of those instead.

    Nutritionalist consult

Mine was 800 calories a day max for 2 weeks. There are so many different approaches in different centres but they're all aimed at shrinking the liver to make the surgery technically easier. Good luck with yours!
  8. ShoppGirl

    Eating disorder

As others have mentioned, you don’t necessarily have to eat more volume to get more calories in. You can work with your nutritionist to get in more healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, dressings, oils, etc. If you have trouble with that, though the shakes would be a good option as well.
  9. Yes, you are over thinking this. During this phase, the first month or so, there is virtually zero correlation between your loss rate and what you are doing, as there is a lot going on with your body changing states trying to adapt to this big caloric deficit that you have thrown at it. Do a search here for the three (or third) week stall and you will see lots of anxiety over what is my weight loss doing and what have I done? Your loss will slow, often stall and maybe climb a bit before going down again. It often happens right around the time that our diets are moving from one stage to the next, so "that mush be it!" but it isn't - even those of us who never had all those stages go through something like this. Short answer is that when you go into a serious caloric deficit like this, your body first starts drawing on you glycogen reserves, short term carb reserves stored in you liver and muscles, which give you your quick response bursts of energy. There is a lot of water weight associated with glycogen. Once that is largely consumed, your body usually pauses to see if you are really serious about this caloric deficit thing. Then it will start to draw on your fat stores, which is what we are here to do in the first place. Fat also burns more slowly than glycogen/carbs (its that 9 cal/gm vs 4 cal/gm thing,) and it has to rebuild some of your glycogen reserves again (water weight on) so weight can be real flaky here for a while. If you really feel that you aren't eating enough, then a bit more wouldn't hurt and may be helpful, though that won't be what gets your loss moving again. I was up around 1100 calories fairly quickly, within the first couple of weeks, but I was also progressing on food types more quickly than your program suggests, and we had no specific caloric guidance. Others on these forums at that time were insisting that anything more than 6-800 calories would be death to your weight loss. I did fine, at least with my decent guy metabolism, and they did fine as well. I wouldn't rush things on too much, as it is much easier to add more later if you feel the need to than to cut back once you get used to eating a certain amount. I didn't increase my average calories from there until I was within about 10 lb of goal weight (at about six months) and needed to slow things down.

    Plenity After Sleeve

I totally agree, a 10lb regain at 18 months seems not unusual after the sleeve. Can you go right back to your post op diet - protein first, veg second, and then stop when you're full? Eat slowly, no water for half an hour but drink plenty of water between meals? Are you tracking religiously - could slider foods or high calorie low nutrient foods have become the norm for you? Also, if you could fill in your weight loss statistics in your profile it would really help people to advise you.

    Plenity After Sleeve

Hi Newbie, I'm concerned about Plenity causing some sort of blockage. Is this prescription? Did your Surgeon approve? My first thought with blood sugar issues is are you keeping carbs low? How is your protein intake? How much water are you drinking? Try to get back to basics. Are you eating more that 1200 Calories? Also, remember that from the beginning of surgery, you calorie intake is very low so your body may have adjusted to survive on very low calories. Make sure you're staying within the calorie range your doctor stated for maintenance and if you're hungry all the time, try filling up on water and having at least 60 - 80 grams of protein daily. cutting back on carbs is a great idea because you tend to be hungrier more quickly after ingesting carbs.

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

I dont have a calorie goal; mine is strictly protein. I need to eat between 75-90 grams of protein a day and also match that with water. Im three months post op. Calories in My Fitness Pal vary between 550-750 calories a day.
  13. I watched it and it shocked me. About 20 years ago they took cookery from the UK schools curriculum. In my humble opinion it was one of the worst thing the government decided upon. All to save money. Its costing lots now because if you are not learned basic cookery at an early age then your only option is to go down the high calorie, take away and processed food options to feed your family.

    Protein shake recall

Can anyone help? I need to know how much protein and calories these microbes add so I can put it in my tracker. Yes, I have a horrible sense of timing. Some would say so of my sense of humor... if I had one at all. I'm sure everyone that uses protein drinks knows that mixing protein drinks too far in advance can likewise open you up to microbial contamination. Be careful out there folks. Good luck, Tek

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

Thanks everyone for the responses. I listened and am going to work on this. Yesterday I added a second Protein powder/shake, raising my protein from 60ish grams to 87. This raised my calorie count roughly 120 or so to 763. I also took in close to 64 oz liquids. I actually felt better during the day yesterday and my scales moved this morning.

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

Same answers over and over, haha Every plan is different. Mine was: 2 weeks, liquids calories or not relevant and to focus on fluid and protein 2 weeks purred, 400-600 cal a day 2 weeks soft foods, 600-800 cal a day Once I got through the first 6 weeks, slowly reintroduced a "normal" balanced diet at 800-1000 cal a day until I hit maintenance. For the most part I am around 700-800 cal a day and hit 1000 if I feel snacky but make sure I stay within my plan limits. (Little over 4 months post op)

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

I probably focus on calories more than I should but I'm 10 months out, and I'm a woman with a very small frame and eat between 750-950 calories a day.

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

As the others have been saying, plans are different. I was never given a caloric goal just protein, water & portion sizes. Best to discuss this with your dietician with consideration of your needs, gender, age, height, etc. & activity level. Though generally a goal like 1000 calories would be one you’d work up to once on solid foods. If I was given caloric goals they would be very different to yours as a short, middle aged woman who isn’t very active. I was barely eating 900 calories at 6 months & at goal.

    Eating disorder

Ah ok, it isn't your eating disorder that is stopping you from eating. There are actually weight gain protein shakes that are pretty good. High calorie. I used to buy them for my father because he couldn't keep weight on.. Also, plenty of high calorie low volume foods like peanut butter, avocado... Etc. that you can add to your meals.

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

I am right at two weeks post op, and during the liquids phase my paperwork says nothing about calorie goals. My goals are 60 - 90 grams of protein and 64 ounces of liquids. Liquids for me is three, long weeks. Pureed and soft diet stages I have a calorie goal of 650 - 800 calories. Protein and liquid goals are the same as the liquid phase. Full bariatric diet has a calorie goal of 1000 calories for the first six months and 1200 calories from six months onward. Protein and liquid goals are the same as the liquid phase still. Hope this helps.

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

Every doctor is different. I started soft foods at week 4. At week 6 I was told I could eat anything except fresh carrots and crunchy veggies. I try and stay at around 800-1000 calories a day. I have a slow metabolism and I'm older so I lose slower than some people. Also make sure you get your protein in. Good luck to you.
  22. While every program is a bit different, the consensus is to make your priority your protein goal in the beginning. I was told in the early months to not pay attention to calories but keep eating until my protein goals were met. After the 3rd month, my surgeon said to strive to get to at least 1000 calories.
  23. I am sure this question has been asked before, but I didn't see it. I am looking for how many calories we should be taking in during the early post-op timeframe after being sleeved. From the handouts I got from the dietician, it says I should be shooting for 1,000 calories a day, but it didn't say when I should start. I am in week 3 post-op and was talking to a friend this weekend that had the sleeve a few years ago. He could tell I'm confused and a bit frustrated. He thinks I'm starving myself and should eat more if my stomach is ready for it. Here's some numbers: - Week 1 post-op, I was on clear liquids. I probably took in about 400 calories a day and lost 12 1/2 pounds. - Week 2 post-op I was on full fluids, I took in about 500-600 calories a day and lost another 5 1/2 pounds. - Four days into Week 3 and still mostly full fluids. I am taking in about 600-700 calories a day and have only lost 1 pound in the last 4 days. So. I really am confused at this point. Should I up my calories some and stop starving myself? Or am I just over thinking this?

    Low weight loss

I agree with all of the above and can add that as you are doing a good amount of exercise you might need to up your calories in order to loose more weight. If your body is in starvation mode then your body wont let your weight drop. When you next contact your team they will sort you out. You are doing great.
