may not be a popular answer, but if you are looking for a high protein, high calorie, low density food, chicharron (aka pork rinds or cracklins) was my go to back in the day when i had very low stomach capacity and was trying to stop weight loss. worked like a charm. mind you they are also very high in fat (and depending which brand or how you make them, are also high in soduim) so keep that in mind.

Hello all my surgiversary December people, we are officially 6 months post op! what an amazing journey this has been for me. I am down 70#’s and still loosing. I am hoping to hit 150 and stabilize at 160. Eating around 900 cal daily, still struggling getting 80g protein and 64 water in. I feel like I always have something in my mouth! This past month my hair started falling out, I mean, AT THE ROOT…. It’s been a bit terrifying honestly but I know it will grow back. Luckily I had thick hair already, I just hope this ends soon. Working out, skin is sagging, and all that fun. I feel a million times healthier, energy level is great, sleep is good, etc Enough about me… How are you all?

I have tried my fair share of whey protein and recently tried the biotech caffe latte protein powder and it's so good. It doesn't have an aftertaste and it just blends so well and isn't too sweet so I've been taking it for months are not close to being sick of it yet! Give it a try.

Hey everyone! I had my surgery on the 9th! Everything went really well, I’m still a little sore, but it gets easier every day. The biggest challenge has been the protein shakes, while they were good at first, I have begun to have a dislike for them. Tomorrow is mashed potatoes, soups, and creamy peanut butter! Looking forward to that immensely. So far I haven’t experienced any nausea or vomiting. I already feel a change in my weight I’ve lost 25 lbs between my preop and post op diet. Once I start working out the weight should fall off. Thanks to everyone who greeted me and sent their well wishes!

Adjusting to my new life
Bessieboop1981 replied to Bessieboop1981's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Spartan maker thankyou for your post it really give me something to think about. I have always hated being hungry too and I think my head is trying to control me again! I have always loved eating and even though I'm not craving junk food I think I am missing eating. I got into a habit of looking at recipes and looking at healthier food options online shopping. I am always thinking about food which is definitely not helping. Today I sat with my 'hunger' and found that if I waited a few minutes and diverted my attention away from food I was fine. The mind is such a powerful thing I can hardly believe it! My mind has tricked me into eating more and gaining weight my whole life and it's what has got me here! So I need to change it up and use sone CBT practises to push away the intrusive food thoughts. Thank you so much you really helped me to see this after reading your reply! -
Sounds like a really rough time. I hope you can be gentle with yourself. I hear people here say that going back to protein first, veg second and carbs a long way back in third can help them get back on track. I'm 3.5 years out and regained 7kg last year. I'm working at getting it back off. Have you kept going with exercise and if not can you reintroduce that too? Please let us know how you're progressing.

I am 6 weeks out and I take Bariatric PAL MV and I take a calcium soft chew by Fusion. I also do protein powder in my tea in the morning, 2 scoops that’s 30 grams, then I make the rest by what I eat. It’s funny, I loved coffee before surgery, but now it makes me feel awful🥺

My program also only counted protein and suggested "low carb" with roughly 40% of calories coming from protein, 30% carb, and 30% fat. If you eat 1000 calories (to make the math easier, but you won't probably hit 1000 calories for a while, at least a few months), that would be 100g protein, 75g carb, and 33g fat. As time goes on and calorie intake goes up, my dietician says the percentage of protein might decrease and carb might increase, but it's about finding what works for you. Also, I was told not to worry about hitting these numbers perfectly every single day, but to look at the weekly average for a better idea of how you're doing.

You definitely need to let your team know. You may need to make arrangements with work for you to take breaks. You may know this better than I do but I believe if the Dr writes a note they have to accommodate you. Your nutrition is medically necessary. And allowing you to get your fluids is urgent. If your truly dehydrated your team should be able to arrange for your to get fluids on an out patient basis but if not you can always go to the ER. Your team should have a doctor you can speak with after hours even today. Clear protein drinks are probably your best bet once you’re rehydrated. They will work as hydration and protein. Premiere protein makes one that was 20g of protein I believe.

Need some suggestions please....
SleeveToBypass2023 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So a month and a half ago I started working 12 hour shifts overnight 3-4 days per week. Everyone said by now my body would adapt, but that hasn't happened. Instead, as time goes on, I'm getting more and more fatigued. I sleep all day and wake up feeling like I haven't slept at all. My joints hurt all the time. I talked to my doctor and my nutritionist and they said to get more rest, eat more dark leafy greens, increase my protein, and maybe drink some coffee. I've done all that and it's been no help at all. Then I was told "maybe you shouldn't do overnights" but that's not an option. It's a requirement for my job. Energy drinks don't work on me (I'm not caffeine sensitive so no matter how much I drink of it, I don't get any kind of a boost) and b-12 doesn't do anything for me, either. I'm at a loss now and I was hoping some of you might have some suggestions. Thanks in advance!!! -
I've finished my Pre-Operative Program at Bariatric and General Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. I'd previously felt unsure about the program but it's turn out to be a very good experience. Now, I'm in the window where they will request prior authorization and then at some point I'll get a surgery date and be off. For me due to scheduling the gap is going to be about 3 months. Since I have the time I'm interested in learning what could be beneficial for me to consider in this waiting period. I will continue to lose weight with the goal of losing 8 lbs a month. I will continuing exercising, and seeing my dietician. I've eve reached out to setup sessions with a bariatric therapist. I've purchased six months of chewable multi-vitamins and calcium, an assortment of protein shake flavors. But I know there's more needed so please lay your wisdom on me.

Wegovy not working
ShoppGirl replied to wendywitch7's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Great idea to speak with your bariatric doctor but discuss the Wegovy with them as well. I have not discussed Wegovy with the bariatric surgeon post surgery but I mentioned it to the PA as a possibility if I am to gain during my cancer treatment over this year if that would be an option and he say it may. I mean he could have assumed that I just meant any GLP-1 and assumed either would do but he didn’t say that Wegovy was not okay for me and I had sleeve prior to my revision to SADI and my surgeon leaves the sleeve as is and does the bypass portion to make up the modified duodenal switch surgery (SADI). Also, post sleeve but pre SADI, I discussed GLP-1 as an option for regain and he said it was a serious contender in terms of what he thought would work for me but the insurance coverage was the issue. I went with the revision and it’s been night and day In terms of the surgery being a better fit for me so I’m not trying to deter you, but maybe the redo was all I needed because I wasn’t mentally ready with the sleeve. I guess I honestly can’t say 100% for certain. Either way, don’t give up. The bariatric doctors won’t give up on you either, together you will find what works for you. Consider what your coverage is and what the cost will be long term though and whether your team will keep prescribing it as a maintenance thing or what happens when you get to goal too because there are pros and cons with both. I mean Wegovy is not surgery and that’s a pro anytime you can avoid surgery but the cost, long term side effects of the shot and regain stats are all things that I would be asking about. -
Hi! Thank you for the detailed questions — I appreciate the time you took to break things down. Here's a full update from my side: 1. Weight Loss Progress: I’m currently losing around 1 kg per month. I know that’s on the slower end post-bypass, but I’m trying to be patient with the process. 2. Goal Weight: My initial goal was 75 kg, and I’ve now revised it to 65 kg. I haven’t updated my profile yet, but that’s the target I’m working toward. 3. Typical Daily Intake: I eat clean, home-cooked food, and I really focus on quality over quantity. Breakfast: 2 eggs and a small side like labneh or some veggies Snack: ½ scoop of whey protein or something light Lunch: Chicken breast or thigh (120–150g) with cooked dhal or sautéed vegetables Dinner: A high-protein meal like steak, paneer, or fish with non-starchy veg I do snack or “cheat” here and there — I’m no angel — but I genuinely try to make good choices most of the time. 4. Caloric and Macro Goals: I was aiming for 115g protein daily, but just yesterday my dietitian told me to reduce that to 65g. I’m adjusting and seeing how my body responds. I try to stay between 1000–1200 kcal, but again, I focus more on food quality than strict numbers. 5. How I Track: I track everything using ChatGPT, not traditional apps like MyFitnessPal. I log my food manually, with weights in grams, and I try to stay mindful and consistent. 6. Activity Level: My workouts have reduced lately. I try to weight train twice a week, and I walk or move throughout the day, but I’ll admit I’ve been slacking a bit. I’m trying to get back on track. 7. Mental State (the honest part): Physically, I look fantastic. But mentally, I feel like I’m failing. I have really bad anxiety that I’m doing something wrong — that I should’ve reached my goal already — and that maybe I’m overeating without realizing it. This fear honestly clouds my progress. I know I’m not alone in this, and I’m trying to work through it. Any advice, especially from others who’ve had slow progress or battled this anxiety, would mean a lot.

Thank you so much I am adapting well☺️ I now have 5 small meals a day and am eating about 600 cals. I'm managing to get in 60-70g of protein and all my fluids too. It is a huge life change but I'm getting there. Thank you for replying 🤗 -
Tips for incorporating Seeds.

An option not mentioned here is to mix with almond flour, low fat cheese, and egg whites to make seeded crackers. Really good with soups, salads, or dips like hummus. -

For breakfast it’s almost always an omolette or an egg and cheese wrap. Either one I use whatever leftover veggies are in fridge. Chicken Cesar salad with a low carb wrap is my favorite option right now. That and fajitas are two of my favorites. My hubby makes a couple chicken breasts on the grill every few days and starting with the cooked chicken they are both quick and go down easy. I also do steak fajitas or cauliflower crust pizza with chicken or I do taco meat and make tacos or taco salad with the taco lean beef or chicken on them mini low carb tortillas. I am pretty fine having the same things over and over as long as it’s stuff that I like. And I always have a whole variety of chopped and washed fruit in the fridge and I have that when the sugar cravings hit. Probably way too often in terms of calories but hey at least it’s not ice cream, right? I have been doing a lot of skinny pop which I know is not really in the bariatric diet but it’s not horrible for me nutrition wise at least. Other than that it’s mostly yogurt drinks and nuts or cheese sticks on the run. What are your go to’s? How is the activity? Are you still plugging along with your classes?? -
Weight regain is not something to be ashamed of. Everybody goes up a bit and down a bit. Just restart what you learned many years ago. Start with the protein and hydration, and watch those carbs. It is important to also have some therapy to help you through the emotional eating, or handy eating since you were working from home. I think a lot of people regained over the Covid hold we were all subjected to. Nonetheless, you could join BariNation for a month and join in some of the groups. Groups are with licensed professionals, meet-ups is with peers in the Nation. I believe that when you are involved with community on a regular basis, you will be supported and will be more successful. If you have your own therapist, then that is great, but for 40 bucks you can attend unlimited groups with BariNation, and be with people that understand you and get you. Just a thought to help you during the hard parts. Wishing you the best!!

All protein is now gross
zeskyizblack replied to zeskyizblack's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I bought one of the OWYN to see if maybe plant protein might taste better to me right now, as well as one other shake that I can't remember the brand of. Just singles, to see if they taste okay. My girlfriend enjoyed the pumpkin spice flavored premier protein, but I could smell it across the room and it just smelled so sickenly sweet. -
Food Before and After Photos

Did an intense leg workout followed by a slow jog on the treadmill. Then it was time for dinner. We had pesto chicken sandwiches for dinner, with air fried breaded chicken breast, pesto, melted cheddar and sliced heirloom tomatoes. I grabbed a half (already had bitten into it as you can see) How I did: Not sufficient protein obv, will have a protein shake before bed. -
@bahuber5477 Great job, it sounds like your doing all the right things! I too make an exception for protein shakes. The nutrient profile for most of them is fantastic and for many of us, it would be next to impossible to reach our protein goals eating just whole foods. I know I can't eat that much and I'm over 2 years out. As an aside, I just wanted to say thank you for what you do. Nurses are the unsung heroes of the healthcare system and I for one really appreciate what you all do.

Love it! This is a very reasonable menu for the day. I like that it relies mostly on real food and supplies a lot of nutrition from veg, fruit, and beans. My dietician would be thrilled with the macros. If you wanted to avoid the protein shake, you could maybe add 3oz of ground turkey to the chili to make up the protein. I'm 10 months post-op and this would be a manageable/very filling amount of food for the day.

Can't Stop Eating Too Fast!
NeonRaven8919 replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's not really an option. It's the NHS so it's just the one appointment through the Bariatric multidisciplinary team. Therapy is really hard to get and the waiting lists are long. Once you get an appointment, you get 12 sessions or about 1 a week for three months.
