Looking for a November surgery pal

Nov 9th Bypass over here. How is everyone doing with post op so far?

    blood?

I'm 12 days post OP and have the same thing, I called my Nurse and they said It's normal for the first few weeks and if I don't have pain or a fever it's probably nothing serious but they'll check in more when i have my 2 week check up... which is in 3 days. So i've done some reading and this is what I've read. It could be: Normal Change in Taste Following Surgery: Change in the taste, smell, or tolerance of food following bariatric surgery is a common phenomenon. In fact, one study has found that as many as 97% of patients experience at least one such change following these surgeries. Ketosis: Some describe keto breath as having a metallic taste in their mouth and a smell that's sweet, fruity or similar to nail polish remover. This is caused by the chemicals your body creates during ketosis, which are released from the body by exhaling. (Unlikely) Dysgeusia or Parageusia is associated with this condition where the taste buds are distorted. It is a serious condition because an aversion to many foods can lead to malnutrition after gastric bypass or sleeve surgery. The only way to really know is to check in with your provider. All the best.

    RNY and Pregnancy

I am currently pregnant after RNY 12 months post op. My on told me to stop taking my bariatric Vitamin due to the excessive amounts of Vitamin A and start taking a prenatal vitamin and a Multivitamin and to make sure I am getting enough Protein, Calcium, iron and Water. Bc of the bypass I am a high risk so they are going to be watching the baby close but they at this point have no concerns. She said the baby will get what it needs from you regardless but it’s super important to take care of yourself especially where calcium is concerned because it’ll take its toll on your bones. Good luck!

    6months post op and PREGNANT!

Congrats!!!!!! I had a pcos diagnoses in my early teens then got diabetes in 2021 and decided the bypass would be the way to go. I have one child but couldn’t get pregnant on my own, my son was conceived after a very traumatic surgery I had in 2015 (my blessing) I was bypassed dec 6 2021 and October 8 2022 got a positive pregnancy test! Had my first ultrasound last week and it’s beautiful! There is hope! Congratulations!!!!
  5. Have you tried leaner things like chicken or turkey? Or even lunch meats? Something "lighter" than beef in consistency? Could also try to cook meat in a slow cooker so it stays very moist. Sometimes the meat drying out is hard to digest also. I was told beef is the hardest to digest after surgery and some people struggle with it for a while. I didn't eat beef for almost 4 months and when I did I had 1 tiny bit of bit beef and it made me ill and vomit for hours. I didn't try again for another few months and now I am fine with it. I have tried all types of beef, with not issues now. PS: I had bypass but these were tips I was given by my team when working back to solids. Also, call your team and ask for help! May be something medical.

Looking for a November surgery pal

Gastric Bypass on the 8th. Glad to hear you have to stay on liquids only one week! Mine is 2 weeks 😩 The swelling and bloating caught me by surprise. I didn't realize how big my belly would get! Then after 2 days it stayed swelled but sunk big time with gravity. Felt like I was carring a pouch of melting jello. Now completed day 6 and the swelling is down about 80%. I can actually reach in and feel my ab muscles again. I too was lethargic but kind of expecting that after surgery. I did my little walks but other than that I did exactly what I planned to do for the first 3-4 days: Nothing. Geting energy back now a little each day. Keeping up with the fluids and protein but am totally sick of protein shakes. Unfortunetly, I am stuck with this liquid diet for 9 more days. I was getting too obsessive with an intake schedule and worrying about counting ounces. Now I just eyeball it and go with the flow. Not hungry BUT would love to have taste of asiago cheese right now. Speaking of that, someone should make Sugar Free Jello with a cheesburger flavor 😁
  7. I had surgery at St Vincents Riverside, and my surgeon was Dr Issac Motamarry. Brilliant man with lots of experience. He is part of the North Florida Surgeons group. My wife and I both had sleeves done. Her in August and me in September. Hers was actually a revision of a lap band done years earlier. Dr Motamarry is very caring and from the beginning we were treated like a member of his family. My own primary care doctor and one of my sisters-in-law also had sleeves done with him. Can't say enough good about this man. By all means, look him up. Good luck on your journey.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone! First post here...was too loopy before surgery on the liver-shrinking diet to post, but I'm drinking protein now, and have my wits about me (somewhat)...today has been rough, not sure if I'm withdrawing from Percocet but I've been tired and headachey. I also have to remember I have autoimmune arthritis, so this all can't be any picnic in terms of mixing that with the last six days... Had RNY gastric bypass done last Monday here in NYC at Mount Sinai St. Luke's. Everything went great. I got home Tuesday afternoon. Not a ton of pain but a lot of soreness around the midsection that made it tough to sleep, so took Percocet at night to help with that. Ran out last night, so also must keep that in mind, re: cranky- and out-of-sorts-ness. *Trigger Warning* Eating disorders... I went through the food dream "phase" (hoping it is just a phase, LOL), and also had weird thoughts today -- straight up addict thoughts -- like, what if I eat my favorite ice cream bar, bite by bite, chew by chew, and just spit it out down the garbage disposal? That way I'm not causing any trouble... Having been in alcohol recovery some time, I know that thinking to be downright insane. I have purged / restricted in my life, but that would be pretty blatant bulimia! Glad I could share that, and hope I haven't triggered anyone too badly. Anyway, I did this from a place of seeking health, taking stress off my back (which was fused after a slipped disc last year), reducing the autoimmune pain, reducing anxiety about being seen in public, as my weight spiraled out of control due to poor stress management through emotional eating. Cosmetics were last on the list, really just a bonus. Anyway, this forum is amazing, and hope to read more of you soon.
  9. I am 2 years out from gastric sleeve surgery. 100lbs down. Original weight 383 and today 277-281. I have not overstretched my sleeve and I excercise 3-4 times a week. I can break the 277. All of my labs are great. Cholesterol, Glucose, Sodium, vitamins, blood counts. However, my high blood pressure has returned, I still have GERD and sleep apnea. I am considering a revision to a DS. I know that is a bit extreme, but my BMI is still above a 36. I am a little nervous, but more so because this surgery reroutes my anatomy. also, I don’t know what the recovery looks like for a DS patient that already had a previous sleeve. Any thoughts on all of this would be greatly appreciated.

    What is a mini bypass?

Thanks for all of the information! My surgeon said he didn’t bring up as much intestine but he didn’t call it a mini bypass.
  11. Hello. I am really really struggling. I have only lost 9 lbs at the 6 week mark after gastric bypass surgery. I lost over 50 lbs prior to surgery. I don’t feel restricted but I am totally following my instructions for intake. Today, I tried beginner’s yoga for overweight people and couldn’t even get near the poses. I feel like just giving up.
  12. I got my bypass done through Wisconsin Medicaid, and it took about 2 months for final approvement. I had the same fears as you. If all your Drs are onboard, and you've jumped through all the hoops, just keep a positive attitude! You won't be refused unless a Dr found the necessity questionable, and you would know that already. Keep your chin up, attitude positive, and with all of us rooting for you, you got this girl!!!

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Got my gastric bypass on Nov 4. Doing really good, but tire easily. Just started on pureed foods. SO made me chicken with peas & carrots. Looked like baby poop, but tasted delicious! Lost 12 pounds since surgery day. Glad to be able to have my protein shakes again! A good friend of mine who had a bypass done just over a year ago, can't believe I haven't experienced dumping syndrome yet. Keeping my fingers crossed, but very careful with how I am adding food into my diet. Hope all is going well with my early Nov surgery buddies!!

    Postop

Just had my revision from sleeve to RNY for GERD 2 days ago. Still sitting in the hospital because I can’t pee! I’m itchy all over and have a migraine. Whaaa. Sorry, just needed to vent!
  15. I live in a city that focuses a lot on beauty & looks, & I've met people who have gotten the mini bypass & mini sleeve. However they were women who got it while their bmi is under 30 & wanted to get rid of those last few lbs so they look better. I believe most people I met or heard about getting it got it in Mexico as they're obv would not be approved here. I know this doesn't answer your question but I find it fascinating that the only-slightly-overweight do this too lol

    Anyone have surgery on Halloween?

Thank you! Do they have a Gastric bypass forum for those months as well?
  17. I'm another who can't tolerate protein shakes post-op. They're just too sweet. There's one brand I can stomach (BSc Clean Vegan), but I only drink it occasionally when I want to hit most of my protein in one "meal", and I definitely don't enjoy it. Instead I drink protein water throughout the day to supplement my food-based intake. Adding unflavoured powder to soups etc was basically like adding mud. Completely inedible. It's probably a different story with whey protein, but plant-based protein powder needs a lot of flavouring and help to be palatable. It's strange how the taste buds change, as I was absolutely fine drinking protein shakes before my bypass. The tolerance for them hasn't come back, and I'm over a year post-op now.

    Regretting the surgery

The first couple of months were terrible I had the bypass last Dec 2nd and had some complications so it took me longer to heal but by February I was feeling good. Was throwing up and in pain for what felt like firever. Now I'm doing great I hit my goal weight my surgeon gave me Halloween and my bmi went from 47 to now it's a 25 Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Upper GI tomorrow

I had a barium swallow every year after my sleeve to check if it was stretched. I guess I was paranoid lol. Now after the revision, I haven't done that. But it is fast, you drink chalky stuff, they watch it go down. I always asked for a picture to compare year to year. No sedation, can Uber that no problem but ... For the surgery, not allowed to do Uber, at least here I couldn't.

How long did you drink protein shakes after bypass?

I’m 2yrs out from sleeve to bypass revision and still drink a protein shake most days in my coffee. Do what works for you and is acceptable with your surgical team.
  21. Hello, I had bypass a little over 7 months ago. I still drink a protein shake everyday. Otherwise, I have to eat NON stop ALL day to hit my protein goal. I am not a breakfast person, so I actually don't mind just grabbing it for breakfast to give my protein a boost right out of the gate. You can stop drinking them whenever you want, you just need to maintain your protein goals. Vitamins depends solely on the vitamins and your blood work. I take a "1 a day" bariatric multi vitamin and calcium each day. Vitamin at breakfast and calcium at lunch. So far so good with blood work but I am early out so we will see how it worked out in a few months at my 1 year blood work.

    What is a mini bypass?

I had to google it when I saw it the first time. Apparently they bypass less of the intestines with mini bypass, otherwise the same.
  23. I see people on here talk about a mini bypass. What is the difference between a mini bypass & a Roux n y (bypass)?
  24. I couldn’t drink protein shakes after my bypass because they felt like they filled my tiny stomach up. I was told that they really weren’t beneficial since they were liquid they pretty much went right through the stomach anyway. I use the patch vitamins every night. I’m over 4 years out & the only thing I have had trouble with is my iron but I have a history of anemia so it’s not really from the by pass.
  25. Hello there, I got a mini bypass in February, and I am wondering if maybe it's time to make life easier. I'd like to cut out the daily protein shake I drink and perhaps take vitamins morning and evening instead of four times per day, as I do now. Can anyone please share their experiences? Thank you.
