  1. The best thing top do is call your insurance company and discuss it with them. Or, wait for your doctor apt and let them fight the battle for you. Insurance companies are so finicky it is hard to say. Sometimes they deny just for a "code" being entered wrong. You dr. office will know how to enter it and make it clear it is not for WL reasons, etc. Goodluck GERD SUCKS! I had it for years and my gastric bypass has completely resolved it. (I did NOT have sleeve, I went with bypass from the start because of already having such severe GERD before hand.

    Cardiac patients?

I’m almost 3 years post first WLS (and a little over 2 after revision because of gerd). I have a small PFO and a bicuspid aortic valve (diagnosed while getting cleared for WLS). I have PVCs and SVT in my medical chart due to sepsis from a bowel obstruction. I can’t take metoprolol because my resting blood pressure is too low to support it so I get yearly echos and see my cardiologist twice a year.
  3. I just experienced my first adverse reaction to food that felt like could be dumping. Im a week and a half out from bypass and on puréed food. I had the tummy issues and nauseous and dizziness and anxiety reaction. But it only lasted maybe 15 minutes. It was a milk based protein snack with only 4g added sugar (8g total sugar) and 2 g fat so I’m not sure how that would be dumping. I’ve had some issues with lactose since surgery but not to this extent. Does this sound like dumping?

    Cardiac patients?

In 2020 I had open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve as well as a single vessel bypass. I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve and due to significant stenosis (very common with bicuspid valves), I was barely pumping any blood to my body. As far as meds, I'm now off most of my BP meds, but likely will be on Atorvastatin and Carvedilol the rest of my life.

    Weak 2.5 weeks post op

Hi Laura! I’m still fairly new to this whole process also. My gastric bypass was on October 13th. I’m also struggling with weakness and also lack of energy. It definitely has improved since my 2 week post op but still am wishing I had more energy. I have been doing a lot of reading on this group and it sounds like what we are feeling is normal, but it is still hard to deal with every day. Any major surgery will take time to heal so I’m sure your doctor is correct. I guess I don’t have much for advice except keep the faith that everything we go through is worth the better health we get in return. Take care and know that there are many super supportive people out here that care about your progress and success! Tracy

    November 2022 surgery support!

Hello all, had Gastric Bypass on 11/14 and so far it has been way easier and less painful than expected. The only thing is I put on 10 pounds over night from when I was weighed before surgery and when I got home the next day. I’m SLOWLY losing that water weight… but still 4 pounds higher than when I went in. but I’m walking, drinking well, getting tired of protein shakes… would kill for some grilled salmon or even cottage cheese! fortunately, my appetite is under control so when my son eats his meals, I’m not (too) jealous!

    November 2022 surgery support!

Has anyone got gastric Bipartition surgery? I’m scheduled for December 5th. I’ve been told it’s less invasive than bypass but more effective than sleeve?
  8. I have been having terrible reflux. The dentist says I have corrosion on my back teeth… I have an appointment with my bariatric doctor to discuss an endoscopy to take a look at things in there. I’m hoping a revision will fix it. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. On their website it says BMI of 40 or 35 and higher with medical conditions. I’m at a 31. I’m worried that they won’t cover the revision. Does anyone else have BCBS and needed a revision due to reflux with my BMI? I just want relief!
  9. I’m not a good reference for weighloss after revision because I had the revision when I was at goal but the preop and stress of surgery led me to lose 10-15lbs. (I worked to regain that weight as my surgeon did not want me to lose any additional weight)

I am trying to read everything about revision. It's not 100% every time according to some accounts. However, most likely it will be better than before. Good luck to you and keep us updated! Sent from my SM-G996U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. Did you lose weight after revision, (if yes) how much and how long did it take? Thanks so much! Sent from my SM-G996U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

My father never had surgery but suffered from GERD as long as I can remember. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year. That’s what motivated me to get this done. Before surgery I was also on pantoprazole twice daily and still taking tums and GasX daily too. I also wear a CPAP and had unbearable aerophagia every morning. That’s ultimately why I chose to go through with it. My sleeve didn’t help me much with weight loss but I lost 70 lbs earlier this year between the nausea and vomiting! As I type this I just woke up with similar but milder symptoms and I’m 10 days post op. I really hope it’s just due to the healing process! Everyone I’ve read about says all symptoms of GERD disappear after revision
  13. I agree with the above comment - sounds like it might be a stricture. If you were only not able to keep food down, then a call to your clinic to schedule a upper endoscopy would be fine - but since you can't even keep water down, I'd go to urgent care or the ER. People can live for awhile without food - but not fluids. I had two strictures - one at four weeks out and another at eight weeks out. Easy fix, and you'll feel better immediately if that's what it is. They almost always occur between 1-3 months out (that is, if you have one - happens to about 5% of bypass patients). They've very rare once you get over 3 months out. I know you're only three weeks out, but I think it's possible that is what's going on. I would definitely get it checked out.
  14. Hi all, I’m 3 weeks post op after gastric bypass surgery and the last week I haven’t been able to keep anything down. I’m constantly sipping on water but no matter what I do it comes back up again. Last weekend I made a stupid mistake of having a bite out of a toasted chicken wrap thinking if I chewed it well it wouldn’t do me any harm. I felt absolutely fine afterwards but the following day is when this stage I’m at started. Really worried I’ve done some damage now and don’t know what to do??

    Insurance GERD Revision

I think some policies will cover revisions if there are medical reasons - and GERD would be a medical reason. You'll have to check with your insurance company, though, to see if it'll be covered.

    Insurance GERD Revision

Just curious if insurance will cover you if they want to do a revision from a sleeve to a bypass. 18 months out no weight gain buy having unbelievable GERD affecting my health.

Worsening GERD do I need Bypass

if you had GERD before. I am unsure why a surgeon would allow you to go thru sleeve and the sleeve can make that worse. getting a endoscope may be a good thing to get done that can see the acid and how your esophagus is. But those with GERD/heartburn tend to get better with bypass. That is why most that get the sleeve end up getting a revision to bypass because of GERD issues.
  18. I am 18 month post op from the sleeve and have lost over 90 lbs. They said I am doing great and am at goal. I see the plastic surgeon Monday. However I do not feel so great. I had GERD before surgery and was doing great up until like 2 months ago. Now I can barely eat with out feeling sick. Constant chest pain, sour taste in my mouth and now I have been vomiting in my sleep. They started me on a bunch of new medications yesterday and I had a barium swallow test. The test did not show a hiatal hernia or reflux at that time. I feel like since that came back normal that they are not going to do anything more. I know something is not right and wondering if anyone found relief switching to the bypass and what it took to finally get help? Just want to enjoy my new self.

    Emergency lap band removal

Unfortunately what you experienced is exactly why few surgeons do lap band surgery anymore. A bad result does not necessarily mean medical malpractice. You had bad luck, just as I did. I had RNY>RNY revision last December 21. Ten days later I was airlifted back to the hospital with peritonitis and sepsis. My small intestine had split post surgery and everything I consumed was entering my abdominal cavity. I spent 7 weeks in hospital, had 3 endoscopy procedures, two open surgeries, and then spent 3 more weeks in a rehab facility. This was just about as bad as it could get: I was near death. However, I recovered without loss of any organs, limbs, or mental capacity. I never blamed my surgeon or the hospital.

    Waiting

I dropped 50+ lbs pre-surgery by cutting out all foods containing sugar, flour, white potatoes, rice, and processed foods. These are my trigger foods. I consider myself to be a sugar/food addict. I can never go back to eating these things with abandon. I started using the Baritastic app. I occasionally used liquid protein shakes during that period. My calorie count dropped to around 1000 per day. I attended water exercise classes three days a week, including swimming 1/4 mile each time. I also increased my mileage on my walking tricycle to at least a mile a day. I've lost another 50+ lbs since my RNY>RNY revision surgery. I still strive to avoid my trigger foods. It's harder to resist now and weight loss is slow going, but I'm still dropping a few pounds a month with lengthy stalls.

    Marketplace insurance

typically in Texas any marketplace plan will not cover any kind of bariatric surgery. SO its a lot of the southern states that do not cover it due to the fact that the majority of people there are overweight and eat poorly. (Which is what one insurance agent told me) So the only way to get it covered would be to move to a state that does cover it, get your surgery and move back. I thought about that if i ever needed a revision because here in Florida its also excluded. I paid cash for my surgery

    Diabetes

I was told to stop my metformin the day of surgery and was told not to restart it. My blood sugar has been 100% normal since surgery. We'll see where my A1C is when I do my 4 month follow-up, but I fully expect it to be in the normal range as well. Now I should state that I had bypass, not a sleeve. Bypass is often credited with similar results to mine in terms of reducing or eliminating diabetes symptoms VERY quickly, but I really don't know if sleeve is the same?
  23. Are you excited? Are you getting bypass or the sleeve?

    Gastric bypass

I had recently bought slim fast and I didn't know Amazon has all the stuff I need before my wieghtloss surgery. Slim fast isn't something that helps so I gave them to my sister.on Amazon I found the protein 2 o waters because my adopted sister is going through the same kind of thing only I think hers is the sleeve. I am so excited to be going through this journey because I waited 20 years for something to happen like this. I was once very skinny when I was a kid due to lots of health problems especially diabetes I gained alot of weight always hunger thirsty etc..I'm still training my brain to say no on certain things. It def works so far. I lost around 50 pounds since last year or was it forty pounds and I'm trying my best to loose it the diets working that im on I eat more veggies rather then candy. What are your thoughts on sugar free candy I think there are additives in it I cut those out as well.
  25. My original surgeon left the state unexpectedly so I had a consult with a new one today. I'm down to the point of choosing which surgery I want and I had settled on RNY. This new surgeon brought up SADI DS which he said solves issues the old DS caused, i.e. less malabsorbtion and less GERD than the sleeve alone (something to do with how they deal with the pyloric sphincter). He said the advantages over bypass are less chance of ulcers, increased weight loss and better control of serious type 2 diabetes (which I have). I hadn't considered ulcers in my research so I would like to ask if others with RNY have had issues with these and/or have noticed this being a serious issue in your own research. I did a search here and there are almost 1K mentions in the RNY forum. I would also be interested in hearing from those who had this particular DS procedure (I think it is the most common DS version now?) and developed GERD after, and any other issues with DS in general. I'm still inclined to get the RNY but want to keep an open mind at this point. Malabsorbtion is an issue for me as I do take a number of medications that I will continue even with weight loss. Thanks for any input. I really want to get past the decisions and get this done!
