Good morning! I am almost 6 weeks post op. I can get a little hungry, but anytime I try to eat, the food tastes disgusting to me. I am eating on plan. I get my Protein daily, but its from liquids. I just can't stand to eat anything. I cook foods allowed on my diet, and I have to force myself to eat it. Is this normal? Will it get better as I continue to heal? Thanks!

Feeling Hungry 4 weeks post op
Teachamy replied to alexsleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Increasing exercise always made me feel incredibly hungry. Maybe you can try adding salsa or spaghetti sauce to some foods to bulk up what you're eating. I've also heard Protein bars and shakes right after working out help muscle recovery and curb the appetite. I am looking forward to getting back into the bars again myself. ( I was sleeved on 12/18! Get weighed again tomorrow.) Sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up! -
Gastric Sleeve for over 210 KG and BMI 70
heidikat72 replied to rajivwelikala's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm only 6 months out from sleeve surgery so not a complete success yet! But I'm very pleased with my choice to do sleeve. When I first met with my surgeon exactly one year ago, my BMI was 76! I didn't have to lose weight before surgery but since my insurance required a 6 month medically supervised period, i used that time to gradually make some changes and start very slowly increasing activity. So on surgery day my BMI was ~66. Now 6 months later it is 48 and dropping. When I started, i couldn't even walk a city block without being completely out of breath, heart racing and in excruciating lower back and knee pain. So yes, my exercise routine started VERY slowly - but you know what? any little bit helps and just very slowly gradually increase activity so you don't injure yourself. even the slightest bit of improvement in that area will make recovery from surgery so much easier. and now? well, in October I hiked over 5 miles in the Great Smoky National Park - broken into 2 smaller hikes on the same day - without ANY problems! Something I couldn't have even dreamed of doing a year ago. So is sleeve an option for someone with a BMI of 70 or higher - yep absolutely! Ultimately which surgery to have is a decision between you and your doctor. Weigh all the benefits and negatives of each procedure in regard to your particular case and make an informed decision. Regardless of which route you go - good luck on your journey! -
I drink the pre-made EAS Protein shakes when I'm in a hurry, or I use the Six Star Whey Isolate which I get from Walmart. It has 30 grams of protein per scoop. The flavor I use is the Decadent Chocolate and mix it with 8 oz. almond milk and 1 1/2 tsp. of peanut butter, or PB2. YUM!

Silk lite almond milk (60) cals? Do you use it in shakes? Can we?
Mommabird replied to Homecie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told no by my nutritionist. She recommended sugar free soy milk as it has a lot more protein. -

I'm blessed in that my grocery store has a store brand of skim milk that is not only lactose free but has 12 grams of protein per cup! Needless to say, that's what I use! ???? -
I did great on my pre-band diet and good since the surgery. My last visit I was upgraded to mushies and find I am now constantly hungry. It starts about 2 hours after my morning shake. My stomach is growling and I start thinking about and looking for something to eat. Even high Protein Snacks (cottage cheese, yogurt) aren't holding me very long. One afternoon I had no snack with me and succumed to trying a bite of a donut that was in the office. I discovered that I can not only tolerate eating (yes, I have to chew well) but the QUANTITY doesn't seem to be an issue. I've gained back about 4 lbs according to my home scale. It's that same little-bit-of-crazy hunger that used to herald the coming of my periods. Experienced bandster, HELP! What's going on? Is this normal? I don't seem to have any restriction and think I've reached the end of my own discipline and willpower. Is this just a bump in the road? I'm not due for my first fill until this coming Monday.

Need advice from experienced bandsters
jahair replied to mariecarmen's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ditto to what Tanya said and I would add that as my appetite increased, I discovered that with a decent blender you can make nearly any food into a mushy. I often took a small portion of whatever I was cooking (like chicken breast) for my family, added hot Water to moisten and blended it. Voila, I had Protein but in a form my band could tolerate. The more protein you can get in, the longer it seems that hunger can be held at bay. Three suggestions...(1) blend in the vegetables that go with the other's meals, you get a better/richer flavor. (2) put the result in a cup or container that you can't see through and spoon away... and (3) I made a rule that no one in my house could comment on what my mush looked like. So no self pity. Hope this helps, Jo Ann -
What have you done to treat yourself, post-weight loss?

That's awesome! For me, it's the obvious--clothes shopping! It's fun now! And I have so many options, instead of just getting what I can find that fits. -
This Is Gross, But The Protein Mix Is
54Shirley replied to sandybraman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try Muscle Milk light. it doesn't have that protein taste. As far as the runs,,, well it's water in, and water out. you can't change that, unless you thicken it up. -
This Is Gross, But The Protein Mix Is
pink dahlia replied to sandybraman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i found that powdered protein mix that you mix with milk causes a bit of gas and blocks me up a little. however i found that if i drink "Boost" protein drink it doesnt cause probs. it comes in little bottles , near the diabetic supplies. it comes in strawberry, choc and vanilla and its very good. keep in mind some people (like me)get diareaha and stomach prob when you have anytjing sugar free because its made with fake sugars that can cause your probs. make sure you read the labels closely on "sugar free" items. good luck !! -
I was banded 4/23 and I am exhausted. I try telling myself that I'm only three weeks post op and that I just need to heal but I do not have the energy to do anything. I feel like a lump on a log with no motivation, energy or spirit. I just don't feel like myself. I'm trying to get in all 50 g of protein and am doing pretty well at that. I am also taking vitamins. I just don't know what to do! My life is just supposed to be getting started again and I feel like it's about to end. I know, a little dramatic, but I'm struggling. I just don't feel like myself. Is this common????

I Got Full After That Little Food....
legal loser posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am one week post-op tomorrow. I am lucky enough my mom (banded in 2009) is here until the weekend. She didn't think I should mow one week out so I made her dinner. Grilled handburgers and Mac and cheese. Didnt bother me at all to make it but she felt bad making me cook when I'm on purée food. Then as she ate half her burger and her Mac and cheese, I got full on just 2 tablespoons of my puréed Mac and cheese (mixed with protein powder). Couldn't believe how little it takes to fill me up. As we cleaned up the leftovers we commented about how a few years ago we would have devoured the Mac and cheese. The little things make me happy. -
Hello, all! Surgery was a success! I had a lot of nausea the day of and the day after surgery. I came home 1/29 in the afternoon- it's good to be home! I'm trying hard to get in as much protein as possible, but I'm scared I will overfill! So I have been sipping all day. I have also been walking around the house. Biggest issue is just exhaustion! I didn't even take a pain pill today! Anyone else who had surgery in the 28th... How are you doing?

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a way to get your insurance to cover your fills? I live in NC and I am planning on going to CO for surgery. I was wondering if anyone self-paid for surgery, but was able to get fills covered.......What is the best way to find out if I can? Should I call the insurance company (UHC) and just ask? Or should I contact the doctor's office first for information? I have contacted a lot of doctors around here about fills and they are all really expensive. I considered flying back and forth to CO, which may be cheaper than get the fills done here. I just think this may get complicated. What it I was overfilled and I had already gone home? I would still end up going to someone local. The best rates that I have found here are $500 for the initial visit and $1,000 for the year or $500 for the initial visit and $300 for each fill....The $1,500 for the 1st yr may be the best option, depending on how many times I think I might have to go for fills. I am just really frustrated and trying to figure out a way to get this done. I am not worried about playing for the surgery, but the aftercare is really adding up. And then I went to my general dr on Thursday and when I was there I asked her whether or not they would be able to take out my stitches there. She basically avoided my question & asked me what kind of surgeon would be ok w/not providing aftercare to their patient. I explained that he does provide aftercare, but I hadn't decided it I was going to do that or just find a dr here. I can't fly back there just to have stitches taken out. Sorry to ramble.....I would really appreciate any info you all can provide. Thanks!!

I'd go for the protein powder, they tend to have more grams of protein per serving than slim fast. -

Some have luck with hot tea.... I've seen other posters chat about pedialyte very watered down... Protein drinks do not seem to be in favor when you deal with an empty system....stomach acid issue. Hope you feel ok til Monday am when a dr is available for advice.... Best of luck with your issue.. -
Trouble Losing The 10 Pounds For Insurance
Sojourner replied to lv2nurse's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon was strict with meeting his weight loss requirements; if you did not weigh below his designated weight loss number for you by the day of your pre op appointment, you were not scheduled for your surgery. No exceptions. I was advised of this, so I was determined to make it happen and have my weight where it needed to be or lower. What have you been doing in an effort to loose weight? I followed the band diet pre op to loose weight (lean Proteins, low carb Fiber, strict portion control), and I got an hour of cardio exercise in every day. I lost 13 pounds in 21 days...8 pounds under what I needed to loose. Best wishes for success...it can be done, but it takes focus and a realistic timeline. -
