  1. I eat Greek yoghurt for breakfast (add raspberries) and do feel full after it. It is funny how different we all are and how our sleeves react to different foods.
  2. Hey, i live in Orlando, so i don't know wassup in Detroit & i'm not familiar with HAP insurance. I'll tell u what i do know- i had to see a Nutritionist twice, a Psychiatrist twice, a sleep study, and my lap band doctor every month to see where i stood. i first started off by attending a lap band seminar... which started my whole journey. i only had to lose like 8 pounds if that to get approved; along with the approval of the nutritionist, the psyc & sleep study; which i all passed. it's sorta almost like waiting a year just because of appointments alone really- i got approved once i finished these things... i've mentioned in my own topic about mystery left shoulder pain, turns out a lot of ppl get it after the surgery. it's weird but i've had no complications other than this (knock on wood). i had my surgery March 29th 2013. i healed up after surgery in less than a week. the gas pain was probably the worst of it honestly. after u heal, u r able 2 eat normal again, or howeva u ate before-... usually. I was able to eat normal again after a week. i got my 1st fill and felt nothing, got my 2nd fill and i feel something but just a little. I get my 3rd fill in two weeks and i have a feeling that will be the "one" for me. i'm already eating less. that was the hardest part for me. i use to eat once a day, a big meal and that would be it. NOW, i follow "the program" but i'm telling ya, without this band, i probably would not have the discipline to do so. SOooo, i eat a small meal like 3 times a day. i drink a lot of Water but NOT with my food....... don't do that ever. You'll be sick as a dog. Your new smaller pouch can only handle "small amounts" unless ure chugging down smoothies or icecream, if your gunna do that, forget it, you'll keep the weight. and clearly u have to consider everything. it's not easy but as they say; the lap band really IS a tool and i'm just now honestly getting a handle on it and it's pretty cool. i know when i weigh in, in 2 weeks that i'll have lost some more weight WITH THE HELP OF THE BAND... 4real. if u can lose weight on ure own; go 4 it. I used to be really fit until i was in an auto accident which hurt my lower back and i gained a lot of weight over a 3 year time period because i was unable to be active; this in turn made my lower back worse, etc etc- Now, i'm feeling better, my back is better (thank gawd) and i have this "tool" 2 help me shed the pounds i've basically lost control of. I feel more in control now and relieved to top it off. i don't know ure story but best wishes.
  3. Great story. I too was on a lot of insulin (am dose, with meals and nighttime lantus), as well as metformin twice a day. I started the liquid pre-op diet five days ago, and I have not taken any insulin or metformin because my sugars have been perfectly normal, and I have been checking incessantly just to be on the safe side. I understand that this may or may not change once I begin adding food to the mix, but I honestly believe that since I will be making healthy choices and having smaller portions, the sugars will remain normal. Let's hope I enjoy the same success you have! Congratulations. You must be thrilled!
  4. I am down 82 pounds from July 2nd. Jan. 2nd will be my 6 months out - and I have an appointment with my Dr. on Jan. 17th! I can't wait to see my awesome bloodwork! I have been doing really well and eating pretty much on target. I feel like I should be a poster girl for this surgery. I have never thrown up, been in pain, and things are going well. In fact, my 18 year old step daughter is coming to stay with us and see if she qualifies - what a life changer to have this tool so young. What a difference it could make in her life. I am a huge advocate of this procedure. I would never TELL anyone to do it, but if people ask me - I am honest and open about it. I feel so good! I know not every one has had my experience - but for me, life changing!!! I have more energy, every one has told me how much happier I seem (I didn't think I was unhappy before - but maybe I was....) I feel like - at 38 - I have a new life. Food doesn't control me. I don't think about my next meal or how much I can have....I am not embarassed about my back fat rolls and not fitting in a chair. My husband's arms wrap all the way around me and clothes shopping is FUN! If you are on the fence - jump over it! I was so scared before surgery - I am so thankful I pushed through that fear. God bless you - and email me if you have any questions - ssmonte72@yahoo.com I would love to be support for anyone that needs it.
  5. hi jclo , since February this year you have done great , I had my band done 23/11/12 and lost just over 3 stone since then , my weight has not shifted for several months now which is frustrating , stress has also played a part in my journey so far which I was not prepared for really but now understand to be quite common . 6.5ml is a fair amount in a 10ml band but remember we are all different and what works for you may not for someone else , some loose with no fill but I think that is unusual . I would look at your diet firstly , do you feel restriction ? when you eat ; I tend to have only a slimfast shake for b/fast as until lunchtime or beyond I often find eating food difficult , meat/ bread are a problem for me , as with many . Are you in the uk ? have you access to a dietitian where you had your surgery , if so it may be worth speaking to them and/or your surgeon for advice , you don't want to be too tight but if you don't have sufficient retriction for you more may need to be put in , feel free to keep in touch . best wishes , dream x
  6. Welcome! Most of us have been exactly in your shoes. Maybe you still will eat a little bit of crap. It will be a smaller amount and you won't be able to binge like you have because the band simply won't let you. Are you ready to be healthy? Really ready? Can you wrap your brain around eating stuff that will feed your body well and keep you in good health? 'Cause eating JUST crap is quite self distructive, (been there, done that,) and in the end the only one who can be accountable to take care of you, is you. The thing that the band helped me with was dealing with the hunger issue. When you diet, you get hungry so you want to cheat. With the band the upper part of the stomach forms a pouch which fills with a small amount of food. It turns out, that when the top part of the stomach is full, hormones are released that say "full" and those same messages keep the hunger from returning for four hours or so. Cool huh? In addition, you can only eat tiny amounts and feel completely OK with that. I still "cheat" sometimes with treats I like, but I've gone from a size 20 to a 6 and have a whole closet full of "thin" clothes that keep me from overdoing it. What if you DON"T get the band and nothing changes? Good luck on your journey!
  7. Hi guys!! Just reporting some stats for you all! HW: 240 SW: 235 CW: 216 5'4 I am 13 days post op, the weight is flying off and I'm going back to work today. Still some soreness on the left side, I also had hiatal hernia repair so my surgeon said this soreness, which feels like a runners cramp in my side could take up to a month to FULLY go away. Sometimes it's gone but then I lift something, stretch the wrong way etc and it comes back. Lol. Other than that doing pretty good. I am on purée foods and tolerating them fine. Had cottage cheese this morning. Yummy! I will post pics shortly. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. This is about the time when it happens, as you close in on goal. The sleeve fixes your portion size and only if you stick to dense Protein, at that! It doesn't change any of those old habits or comforts and it's a darn shame it will never stop those junky slider foods from going down so easily. Now's the time to really get active here on VST and seek out threads (reboot some old ones or make your own!) about what you're struggling with - because you're definitely not alone. It's also harder to stay really tip-top motivated as the weight comes off more slowly. You see less of a return for your hard work, and it becomes easier to justify poor choices. Hang in there. If you're still on that super strict low carb diet so many use to lose early on, you might consider slowly shifting it into something more like you'd eat in maintenance. Everyone is different and what your body will tolerate isn't the same as what works for me, but I definitely felt less pressure and less desire to binge/graze when I upped my carb intake and started eating a more varied diet. I even went back onto a daily Protein shake at that point - not only to boost my protein intake, but also to allow me the room to eat a larger variety of foods. Best of luck, and hang in there! You will definitely experience a slowdown here - we all do - so don't let that discourage you too much. ~Cheri
  9. Well, going into it knowing I may never be able to tolerate sweets again, I had to ask myself this: Do I love sweets more than I would love to have a longer and healthier life? Do I love eating large quantities of whatever I want more than being healthy? For me, the answer was that I really wanted to be free from food. As much as I used it to help deal with my emotions (and darn it sometimes I still want to), it also had a control over me that I really didn't like. You know how I feel now? Free. I don't have to use food anymore. It doesn't hold the power over me that it once did. And with every pound I lose, my body feels less my enemy and more my long lost friend. That said, it is hard to figure out how to deal with emotions in a different way than I always have. I haven't figured it out yet, but I'm trying and I have hope. So, find out what makes you consider changing, what you want, where you want to take your life, then ask yourself if gastric bypass surgery is worth it to help you get there.
  10. In short, I had my surgery on 11/3. I Was in the hospital for two days, I haven't had any issues really. I have great restriction and no hunger still so I Track all my food to make sure I get all the protein and fluids I need in a day. I still only eat about 800 calories a day max. My carbs are low because of all the protein I may get 12 carbs a day. It's a work in progress. My surgeon would like me to eat 1100-1200 calories and more carbs but I do what I can. I've lost almost 40 lbs now and I feel great. I am also diligent about taking all my vitamins. It's been a smooth (learning) process so far. I went into this knowing that it was going to be quit a change so I try to stay stress free, I took measurements before surgery with my weight, I only weigh once every couple weeks. I try to stay off the scale. I know I'm not "cheating" I eat clean so I just allow my body to do its thing. It took me years to get as big as I was so I figure it's going to take some time to get it off. I've enjoyed the change! I'm still amazed at the fact that I'm not hungry all the time anymore. I love that my life is no longer focused around food constantly. It's been lovely.
  11. Hi everyone. I was sleeved on March 2nd and at this point in time I am very disheartened in my journey. I have only lost 30 lbs thus far and feel I've fought very hard for even that which includes a lot of working out. I eat right and have been following the guidelines yet I am barely losing. Is anyone else having a similar issue? Most stories I see show significantly more weight loss within this timeline compared to me. Additionally and this is tmi (sorry in advance) but at this point I have to ask - this far down the road does anyone else still experience extreme diarrhea? About 90% of the food I eat cases this to the point I'm afraid to eat with friends or go out if eating is involved. I never know what food will affect me, most cases a food that I previously ate and was fine with, may cause diarrhea a couple days later if I eat that food again. I can't find a common link that causes it. When I spoke with my doctor Activia and time was the only thing recommended but I'm almost 3 months out and still having this issue. Does anyone else experience this? Is so, is there anything you've tried that seems to help? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Week one after surgery!

Puree phase not yet. Not tell I see my physician next week and he gives me the ok. But thank you ???? Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
  13. I think the information about the after surgery diet should be provided a week before. I will be by myself during this process and I need to get ready with the food for the days after the surgery that I will not be able to do it, even if is only soup! Did you talk with your nutricionist about the after surgery diet?
  14. Man that was so hard!! Everyone was enjoying themselves corn dogs, cotton candy, big ole turkey legs, fries!!! I know it will get easier but dam that food looked so delish!! But I just have to remember keep the eye on the prize!!
  15. I am so afraid that I am going to stretch out my stomach I do not think I am eating enough. So I am seeking advise on how much at once should I be worried about eating before this would happen. At this point in my journey I just this week advanced to soft foods. Fortunately, my surgery went well and I've not had any complications. Everly thing I've read said 2 to 3 oz at a time so up until today It has been work to just get in 300 calories a day. I am only drinking 1/2 Protein drink like twice a day. Yesterday I ate 1/2 hot dog ( because am so hungry and it made my stomach sing like a canary) I eat 1/2 of a potato as large as kiwi and it takes me about 15 minutes to get it down. Today I ate it a bit to fast. Today I was so hungry I managed to get a 6 oz glass of milk drank in 10 minutes but it did not make me sick, just very full. I do not want to develop a eating disorder, so any advise is greatly appreciated.

    Gastric bypass!

Congrats, I have 5 days left on pureed foods, and looking forward to slowly adding solids/regular foods. Pureed is much better than liquid only, but many foods lose their appeal after turning them to mush in the blender.
  17. Wow, hang in there! My doctor's office requires 1-3 days of liquids followed by 1-3 days of mushy/soft foods after fills.
  18. Hi there, My name is Heather. I'm 6 days days out of surgery from the Lap Band. My incisions are healing up nicely and so far I'm feeling really good. I've been following the suggestions in the Book I got from my dietitian but I'm starting to notice my hunger is coming back faster then I had hoped. So I was wondering if this happened to anyone else after surgery. And how did you deal with it? I called the hospital today where I had my surgery and they told me I could start having a few things that are in the next stage for mushy/grounded foods. So I was wondering what some of you think I should try that would keep me filled up for a little bit? Also did you stick to the sugar free stuff? Because some of the stuff has a nasty after taste, so I was wondering if something will happen if I have something like a Proteien shake with 20 grams of sugar rather then less then 14? Like the dumping with the Bypass? Thanks ahead of time. Any input I can get will be greatly appreciated it. Heather

    Nuts

I didn't feel you were being argumentative in any way. Your question is a valid one. However, I've been here before, and I know that I need to be especially careful with snack type foods. When I'm only supposed to be eating around 40-50 and 60 max grams of carbs per day, even the smallest amount adds up fast. However, nuts, seeds and Beans or worth the trade. Thanks for the websites!

    Nuts

Once I dropped the first 80lbs, I did incorporate nuts, Peanut Butter, avocados into my diet because I was losing so fast. I stuck with refried and pinto Beans, and it was such a small amount after my meats, I didn't fret over the carbs in those foods. I had the same mindset as you do when it comes to taking things off the menu until I was close to goal. I just did it because I had to do it because like you, I'm a mile (plus 10) taker, and I wasn't willing to give in during my losing stage. My only words of caution is to watch out for the nut grazing that I got wrapped up in. I would grab the jar, have a few nuts, and then kind of grave and before I knew it 1/4 of the container was gone. Those little buggers slid right on through without restriction, without issue, and they were yummy. A whopping 300 calories, tons of fat grams later, I freaked out and then measured my "allowed" portion for the day and put the container in the pantry. I would mainly do this grazing thing while doing housework like laundry folding, or during a sappy movie. Totally mindless eating.

    Nuts

LilMiss, I am not trying to be argumentative, please don't misunderstand. You know best what works for you, I just want to make sure you are not unnecessarily depriving yourself of a power food. I am not sure what nuts you are looking at, maybe sweetened nuts, like honey roasted or other nuts with flavorings (and usually some sugar)? In general, nuts are considered a low carb foods: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/snacks.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-carbohydrate_diet I really like the following site because it shows the ratio of protein/fat/carb in the little pyramid and it is easy to see what is low/high carb/fat/protein: http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3086/2 -- almonds 6g/2% carbs per ounce (3g of those are actually fiber) http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3137/2 -- walnuts 3g/1% carbs per ounce (2g of those are actually fiber) This is low carb and you should be save to eat them. 1%, the only lower carb would be no carb at all :-) What I couldn't find was a definition of low carb, ie. a threshold value for grams of carbs. Either way, good luck on your mission :-)
  22. Last October I had a slight unfill as I felt I was too tight and it was the best decision as I could lose weight and keep food down. All has been going well until the last couple of weeks I have started to feel slightly hungry and looking for snacks. I have booked another appointment but Im wondering if I was too tight last time will I be the same this time, I dont want to be so tight I rarely eat. Does the band change or loosen over time? my husband is telling me I shouldnt have anymore but my head thinks its time for a fill. What do you all think?
  23. Hi Joann!! I'm so glad I saw your post. I'm a mother whose baby was removed from her at the age of 17 while being held in a maternity "home" in Washington, D.C. This was 1966. I wonder if I can be of help to you in that regard? I'm very much into activism regarding this period of time referred to as the Baby Scoop Era (post WWII through 1972)... or anyone else here who is a mother like me or adopted. My project is the Baby Scoop Era Research Initiative, www.babyscoopera.com I know many mothers and adopted people have food issues and weight problems. I'm so sorry that your afamily isn't supportive or that you are having problems getting them to understand, or whatever the issue is re them. Congratulations on taking the step to focus on YOU!!! I did the same. I had the banding on February 17th. I've lost 47 lbs so far. Please let me know if you would like to connect with me directly. My email is karenwb2@verizon.net I can steer you to some really good support groups!! KarenWB Richmond, VA

Hi, new and SOOOOO ready to start my process

Hope this helps: -My pre-op diet was only two weeks long...thank goodness. and my insurance did cover the vsg. -This site has a complications forum that may help you with that question. -I'm having a hard time learning to eat slow...i was a wolfer and a gulper. now i take teeny bites and sip. make sure you follow the rule not to drink a half hour before and after meals. you will be overfull and your tummy and esophagus will ache. -obesity help is a site a lot of people go on, and there's all sorts of video blogs on you tube -my doctor gave be basic instructions for meal plan, i follow those -i was in the hospital two days. i didn't need any pain meds when i got home. this surgery is more discomforting than painful in my opinion...but the discomfort lasts a lot longer; something new comes up with each change in your diet. -i was on liquids for two weeks; pureed for two weeks; and now soft foods for 3-4 weeks, then amy "normal" diet starts in september. -my surgeon is very competent and experienced, but also has lousy bedside manner; but that is fine with me. everything he has told me has been spot on and i have had no complications...knock on wood and thanks be to God. I wish you the best on your journey...I think it will be worth it!

    Hello, new to the forum!

Hi Gloria, welcome to the board. I would think that your doctor has given you some good guidelines for post-op eating. So be sure to follow his (or her) instructions. It's very important to your success. With that in mind, I would suggest you look through the food forum. There are many great threads in there where others have posted what they are eating at different stages of the post-op days. Grats on getting your band, and here's to a successful and exciting journey!
