    Finally

I got my surgery date, which will be November 17th 2012 :-) I'm super excited... Hope time goes by quick so I can be ready for a brand new me...
  2. Even if you can eat a lot, you should not. Just stick with whatever your program dictates and focus on protein. I had a band revision to bypass and understand your fears, but I think if we stick with the plan as it was laid out we will be fine. I lost 30lbs my first month. I measure my food, time it out, and don't eat a bite more than the 3-4 oz I was allotted. Good luck! I feel so much better this time around!

    HELP! Sleeve vs MGB?

What is recommended definitely depends on your surgeon but mine said he usually suggests sleeve for patients with BMI under 40 and a bypass for those over. I’m over, so he thought the bypass would be the best option for me and I agreed. Scheduled for May
  4. Oprah did a show years ago when gastric bypass was becoming popular. Many individuals failed to work the mental health part and transfered their food addiction to alcohol. It in no way says that it is definitive that WLS causes alcoholism.
  5. Ok It has been years since I have posted on here I am six years out since my revision to RNY. However in the last few months and now in the last few days I can feel sharp pain where the small intestines are connected bypassed on the bottom and I can feel the pain. Its getting worse my surgeon has since retired and I have moved its getting worse the pain I mean, I have been trying to ignore it but now I cannot sleep. I became very Anemic a year ago and they never found the cause. I just want to know if anyone else had this pain and what they did. My wife wants me to ignore it however The pain is increasing across the intestine. any ideas
  6. The reflux and needing revision is why I just went with the bypass. One time is enough for me.
  7. Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary since my gastric bypass surgery. I have lost 86 pounds. I’m not going to lie, I honestly thought I would have lost more by now. Although weight loss has slowed down tremendously, I have yet to see a gain on the scale so I take that as a win. I would like to lose at least another 50 pounds so I have to remember this surgery is not a cure-all, it’s simply a tool. I’ve been extremely lucky and have had no complications whatsoever. I don’t experience dumping syndrome at all (well I did once when I ate some ice cream and have steered clear ever since) but other than that there really isn’t anything I can’t eat, I just eat a whole lot less. I can definitely be better about my diet, like always, but one thing I’ve incorporated into my life that has stuck is exercise. I don’t feel good unless I exercise so it’s become addicting (in a good way). Anybody who is reading this and contemplating this surgery, or is in recent post op and struggling, I have absolutely no regrets about having this surgery. The first 2 months were rough, but I got through it and so will you!

    Hopes and fears

I had metatastic breast cancer back in 2012... I just got the bypass...being overweight and getting fatter by the day was worrying me....weight gain and obesity would cause it to reoccur and I have to lose this weight.I take anastrazole and lupron shots post breast cancer...now I am off metformin and ,chloresterol medication. Nosy relatives with too many damn opinions.Keep the em out of your business...tell them you have hiatal hernia...end of story...being overweight you just may have a hernia. Not being able to drink and eat at the same time? are you kidding me..,you will be drinking Water every second throughout the day. Being a big fatso is no fun and I am sick of being invisible...I am too good for that...I had to do something.Bypass is working...it is helping me...take control.

    Still on the Fence

I would recommend either the RNY gastric bypass or sleeve. One individual in our support group went through a revision from a lap band to a RNY. The band was wearing through his stomach. I have heard many other similar stories from individuals, so I would recommend something other than a lap band.

    Anyone in St Louis

Hi,I had my bypass on October 14 , and I'm doing great ???? . Been to a few support meeting and I love them. The people are so nice and patient ,they answer any questions I have plus they have a lot of ideas for all kinds of things . I'm from mass. Hope you find a good group too,
  11. Hi my name is Tia. I'm 25 years old and I'm a mother of two beautiful children. My daughter, Emily, who is almost six..and my son, Bryan who is four years old. I got married August 14th, 2016 to the love of my life Cody. He is a daycare teacher & I work jewelry sales in walmart. We are both slowly making steps toward bettering every aspect of our lives. Just in November I recieved my high school diploma. Just last week we discovered Cody lost over one hundred pounds since we started this journey. I had lost 78 and it's slowly going back up. He started at 450lbs even & is now at 323.7. When we started this journey two years ago it was because I was diagnosed with Lupus. My endocrinologist told me that if I didn't lose weight in a quick yet healthy way, that the Lupus would complicate my life way sooner than it had to. My husband immediately jumped on board and we started hitting the trails almost every day. We are in smaller portions and we started noticing huge differences. I felt like I was becoming a better mother because I could get in the floor and play with my kids and not feel like I was dying. I had many plateaus but suddenly I hit this one that paste longer than usual. So I went and saw my pcp and she reffered me to a nutritionist to get some advice on the right things to eat. I followed Dr. Heathers steps to a T...still stuck. So then I start changing up my exercise..still stuck. So I go back to the doctor and she did some tests and her and the endocrinologist agreed that the Lupus had begun effecting my weight loss. Lupus in some weird way was litterally fighting me on this. I was heart broken...all that hard work to avoid surgery in the first place down the toilet. So here I am..six days before surgery scared to death and praying God gives me this second chance at life. I'm so scared I'm going to mess this up and I refuse for that to happen. My babies need me..my husband needs me. So I'm thinking this was a wise step..finding a support group and talking to people dealing with the same thing. This is who I am now♡ Sent from my SM-S820L using the BariatricPal App

Is salmon too fatty for post op diet?

As Fluffy said, differences for different programs - and also for different individual needs. I never worried about carb or fat counts as those don't bother me, just calorie count as that is what ultimately drives the weight loss. There is too much good nutrition associated with foods that are nominally carbohydrates for it to make sense to place arbitrary limits on them; on junk food (high calorie/low nutrition stuff) yes, but not solely on the basis of something being high carb or fat - the calories are an adequate limitation. With your bypass, however, and the prospect of dumping or reactive hypoglycemia, a reasonable carb restriction can be in order, particularly for simple carbs and/or sugars, at least until one figures out ones' individual tolerances.

    MIAMI?!

Hello everyone, my name is Jannet and I just joined here. I'm 27 yrs old and had gastric bypass 12/19/14 with Dr. Sosa. Currently looking for new friends who I have things in common with. Any takers?!
  14. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on November 30 and have lost 24 lbs. I have not lost anything for the last two weeks and I am terribly depressed and worried I'm not going to lose anymore. I feel like a complete failure, I have tried to do everything the way I was instructed. I do have trouble drinking all my water and the protein shakes make me sick at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to get my weight loss going again. Thank you for any comments!

    One Year Post Opp Update

I am almost 4 weeks post-op with gastric bypass and I would have to agree with all the comments you made. Of course, I can't speak yet about further down the road but the pre-op and right after pre-op are spot on. I too was worried I was putting my life on the line and frankly did not go ahead with my surgery 10 years earlier because of my fear of leaving my 3 children without a mother. Even though complications do occur my fears were absolutely irrational. The statistics simply did not support my "hypothetical horrors." Most of us are low risk patients and recovery is much much easier then a c-section or even childbirth. From the minute I came home from the hospital (2 day stay) I required no pain meds except for 1 single pill of Tylenol on 3 separate occasions and it was for a headache and two stupid incidents of trying to lift/push things that were too heavy on that first week home. Because I felt fine, I was forgetting I couldn't do all that I wanted to do. The biggest annoying thing at this point is getting enough fluids in. You have to keep sipping all day and I forget. This is not bad and my 33 lbs weight loss is a dream come true. I can go up the stairs without my knees hurting and my blood pressure is normal. I FEEL GREAT. Hardest day: First day of pre-op diet. I felt hungry just like you do when you start a diet, since then I never looked back. Post-op not hungry at all. Eat to live but no longer live to eat. I LOVE MY WLS (weight loss surgery).

    Recovery for Singles

I know this is an older thread, but it seems to perfectly address my concern. I live alone, and am very independent. I stayed with my parents after a hip surgery and was so stressed out by the constant noise and activity that it really wore me down. I'd really like to just get home after my bypass, and be there alone. I have a nice, quiet apartment. My parents and brother (an EMT) are a mile away. I have emergency pulls in my apartment that will bring nurses to my door from the nursing home my building is connected to. So, help is not far away. The trouble will be in convincing everyone (especially my mother) that it will be okay, so I'd love to know how you all managed if you did it alone. Also, I have a rambunctious 70-pound dog. I'm worried about handling her after bypass surgery. Any opinions on how long it would take before I'm healed enough to not worry about being yanked around a bit? Thanks to anyone who sees this and has ideas for me I'm worrying far ahead of time, but that's how it goes with me.

Dear god...WHY AM I THIS WAY? CARBS!

I am 27 months post-op from RNY gastric bypass surgery. There are two stages to RNY. They are the Weight Loss phase and the Maintenance phase. The goals and meal plan in my humble opinion are different between these two stages. At 5 months post-op you are still in the Weight Loss phase and the weight loss will level out soon and you will slide into the Maintenance phase. In the Maintenance phase the goal is to maintain the weight loss that you achieved in the first phase. After surgery, the part of your stomach that processes fats and sugars were cut away. Therefore the meal plan excluded fats and sugars which would lead to rapid dumping syndrome. But somewhere around the 6-12 month post-op mark your body will change. The intestines will develop the ability to absorb fats and sugars in place of the stomach. This change is actually an opportunity. It give you the ability to reintroduce fats back into your diet. I am 27 months post-op and my weight is towards the lower end of the scales. I entered the maintenance phase 20 months ago and have done very well by not adding any pounds back on. (I have actually lost 15 pounds in the Maintenance phase.) For my meals, I concentrate on high Protein meals. I avoid processed sugars. I use only artificial sweeteners (Splenda, sugar alcohol), low calorie natural sweeteners (Stevia) and natural sugars found in milk and fruit. The other types of sweeteners I avoid like the plague. I read nutritional labels. After surgery I completely lost my hunger. Without hunger constantly gnawing at my bones, it was easy to lose weight. So from my opinion the key to succeeding in the Maintenance phase is to control hunger. Fats take away my hunger, so I reintroduced fats back into my diet and at 27 months post op, hunger still does not rule my life. I use whole milk, real butter and normal cuts of meat. When I snack, I snack on fats. I have one or two cups of coffee each day. On the coffee I put a heaping spoon of whip cream. This whip cream is home made and uses Splenda in place of sugar. During the day for Snacks I consume 2 or 3 Adkin's treats. These use sugar alcohol as the sweetener and contain fat that controls hunger. I have a sweet tooth and these satisfy this need. I limit my meals to one meal per day with complex carbs (bread, pasta).
  18. I had my Gastric Bypass in 2012 with Dr. Joseph Naim, MD, FACS at the Center for Surgical Treatment of Obesity in Long Beach, CA. He was trained by Dr Fobi who was at one time called Hollywood’s weight loss surgeon and considered the weight loss doctor to the stars, (Dr Fobi performed the Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass got Jennifer Holiday, Etta James, and Roseanne Barr to name a few.) A little about me: I had my Fobi Pouch procedure, which is a variation of the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, because I was well over 300 pounds and was facing needing a third lower back surgery. It was not advisable for me to get the third back surgery because 1) I was morbidly obese so there were health concerns especially with anesthesia and 2) The recovery from the procedure typically contributed to a substantial increase in my weight because I couldn’t really exercise enough for it to be beneficial without potentially/inevitably compromising the new back fusion. Dr. Naim is very direct and business like. He is a very proficient surgeon and the surgical procedure he performed on me went off without a hitch. I had problems adjusting initially and in that area Dr. Naim isn’t a very patient, hand holding type of doctor. But if you want a well performed Fobi Pouch procedure and have access to a support group, (especially if you know you need lots of advise and encouragement,) Then Dr Naim is your man.
  19. hello, I have never done this forum thingy b4 !! but here it goes i had sleeve surgery in 2015 at Kaiser went very well .. So point is that i don't have Kaiser any more and i have to get a revision due to acid damage now!! i have IEHP insurance can anyone suggest a good bypass surgeon ???? PLEASE HELP!!
  20. Hi Jeff - Be sure you read around the forum because there are lots o people that have lost enough even being over 400 lbs. I agree that you need another doctor -- does the doc you saw do both surgeries? If so, he makes more money doing the bypass. I don't have a clue if that's his motivation but I would definitely want to know before I went to GBP at his suggestion. Best of luck to you. I have recently started -- 3 weeks until my banding -- and I'm sooo convinced it's the right move for me. It took me about a month to really believe it can work for me since I've never successfully dieted, but now I know it can for me -- and for you if you set your mind to it. (It won't be easy, but it will be worth it, I'm sure!) Debbie

    Love and Support

Apple and almonds? That's actually pretty tough on your stomach. I wasn't allowed apples or nuts until almost 3 months post-op. I had sleeve though, not bypass, and I know some of the guidelines are different. How do you do with Greek yogurt? Cottage cheese? Scrambled eggs? Were you throwing up in your puree stage or just once you moved onto solid foods?
  22. RNY revision to duodenal switch. I'm a little nervous. I've started this journey in March so I'm ready. I hope to post updates as time goes on. I know God is with me and i feel very positive that this time i will make it to goal weight and keep it off. When i had my original bypass almost 15 yrs. ago, i didn't have as much guidance or knowledge that i do now. Much has changed over the years and I'm so ready. Is anyone else having your revision tomorrow or very soon. I'm here for anyone who wants to chat or vent or contemplating getting a revision done. My best to all of you. God Bless!

    Fills

In the three times that a fill was attempted I was stuck a total of 42 times. With not even being able to hit the port the last time. I had been so sick and not able to keep from throwing up for 4 weeks. I mean this means I threw up everything. Then he decided the port slipped a needed to re attach it. I refused to be put to sleep so they did it with a local not a fun thing but not that bad. I have not had the need to take pain pills and this is day 2. But he took out 1 quarter cc and now I can eat everything again, No restriction, nope no restriction. Does anyone know of something that may be going on beside what I have just wrote. I cannot believe it is suppose to be this difficult. Becoming bullimic would of been so much easier. My surgery was November 13, lost 35 pounds in three weeks cause I was so sick and then with this latest thing I lost 15, The lap band itself is not doing it, just the fact that I get so sick when anything is done. Thanks for any help I am just about ready to turn it into scrap.. Teckla

    Knee pain and sleeve

I was told 10 years ago I needed replacement and look into bariatric surgery. I did not want a bypass at the time. I regretted not doing this sooner cause I would have been like most people...weight comes off pain goes away. I waited to long.
