I'm terrified of going in and my liver didn't shrink enough so I'll have to reschedule, my original date was april 26th but the surgery was rescheduled for June 7th bc something came up and he wouldn't be in the office. If you don't mine my asking, did they start surgery and see they couldn't do it or by ultrasound or something?

A lil confused. Planning for post op stages 3,4,5
Apple1 replied to lizpuller's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do think it is the almost 70g of protein in the 8 oz steak that causes the delayed bs spike. The calories aren't the driving force because if that was the case it wouldn't matter what you eat as long as it was low in calories and there would be no spike. fat does not raise bs because it is not converted to sugar in the body, protein can be converted to sugar if eaten in excess. I am not saying excessive fat consumption is good just that it doesn't directly effect bs, and I worry less about the fat content then carbs. I think the key is you are only eating 20-30g at a time. I can do this also with no spike. P.S. I agree that the proper portions of protein do not spike bs and will most likely not ever be a problem for most people after WLS. -
A lil confused. Planning for post op stages 3,4,5
Apple1 replied to lizpuller's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, that was my point, it is possible to eat too much protein before the sleeve and have it effect bs, but not likely after the sleeve. Of course portion control is key, and obviously I had a problem with that as probably many here can relate to. I am hoping my diabetes stays in remission and my portions in control. That is the plan. -
Ive been there !!! I got my lapband in april of 2013 .. lost 80 pounds and found out i was pregnant the following October ! My start weight was 305 im now 315 and my daughter is now 2 .im getting my band taken out and getting the sleeve 6/29 . Im so excited im tired of failing at all diets . Ive really been trying so hard to loose weight on my own but it wasn't working. My drs basically told me the band wasnt as effective anymore and that most of this patients are going from band to sleeve . I also feel the bad just wasn't enough . I think you should definitely consider it ! Talk to your dr find out the pros and cons it doesnt hurt to do some research. Im actually really excited over this and originally back in 2013 i was anti sleeve bc of how permanent it was . My mind set has definitely changed since then !

A lil confused. Planning for post op stages 3,4,5

I have found that eating higher portions of protein will produce a delayed spike in my blood sugar. Pre-op if I ate 8 oz of steak my bs might be 125 2 hours post meal, but at 4 hours could be 145-150. I learned through testing that 6 oz was the max portion I should eat if I wanted my bs to be less than 140 2 hours post and continue going down. I think eating too much protein at a meal can and will cause a delayed spike in a diabetics bs, how much will cause it ? I think that depends on the individual. I don't know about post op because I am not even eating meat yet, and I doubt I will ever be able to eat an 8 oz steak again. I can say drinking a protein shake with 20g does not spike me much at all and I am still off my medication thus far. -
Alcoholic Drinks
PatientEleventyBillion replied to JPM514's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I personally won't drink a drop of alcohol until I know my liver issues are completely resolved first. Another criteria I'm imposing is to be my bottomed-out weight, so I don't have to worry about stalls that will result. Like others here have shown with their planning, it makes 100% sense to go at it from a logical perspective.. just be careful if you're doing any sort of exercise or prolonged standing. Keep hydrated and fed. -
Thanks...yeah she uses staples bc ppl were overdoing it and the glue wasn't holding sites closed n ppl were healing up

Surgery Cancelled Due to High Blood Pressure
Seahawks Fan replied to tx_scorpio's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow! Did they give you another date? Hopefully you can stay on the pre-op diet & do it in a week or so. Sorry to hear this it has been my biggest fear! Even more than having the surgery. All of the prep & pre-op diet then this happening. Health reasons or some insurance BS whatever the reason. They really are just looking out for you but that's extremely unfortunate this close to surgery. So sorry! Hang in there & hopefully this doesn't set you back for long. -
I fainted at a concert last night
MarinaGirl replied to sarajeano's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry that happened. When I feel faint or dizzy I eat a little salt and then drink some water. It helps. I keep little packets of salt in my purse/backpack so I'm ready when the need arises. I haven't had any alcohol in months and I'm 6 weeks post-op. For me I think the triggers are dehydration and low BP or BS. -
Missing 1 Year of 3 Year Weight History
Seahawks Fan replied to MzKelly615's topic in Insurance & Financing
I'm scheduled for Surgery on May 30th & still worry about some BS insurance issue. If I downed all these shakes & for some reason they start chirping I'm going to flip out! Hopefully they just disappear long enough for most of your stomach to do the same. That's what I'm hoping for as well. Good luck! -
Diabetics getting WLS?
AngieK72 replied to CuriouslyCurious's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I've been type 2 for over 8 years now. My BS had been out of control for over a year (totally my fault). At my pre op phone call with anesthesiologist they told me my sugars had to be under 200. I FREAKED!!! So for 3 days I literally watched everything I ate and managed to do just that. I am two weeks post-op and am healing very well per my surgeon. Had an appointment yesterday. Plus my sugars have been running between 80-150 since surgery!! So awesome. Happy healing you amazingly brave people!! [emoji1591]Angie -
Hey all, This is my first post on this site, but I have been following and reading many posts before and following my surgery. I finally decided to speak up and talk about some of my experiences so far. For starters, my first couple weeks post surgery went well, but boy were they miserable. Now when I say "miserable," I do not mean that I was in pain or that I had regrets, but it was more of a matter of it being a full time job plus overtime just trying to stay hydrated and fed. Before surgery, I was a chugger. I would just down obscene amounts of water at different intervals during the day and that is how I functioned. The same came from my eating habits. I would just eat twice a day, but large amounts and at a significant pace. I realize in hindsight that those things were part of the reason I got to be as unhealthy as I was. The learning curve came in viciously as I had to relearn consumption habits. I had to carry around 3 different cups during the day to get in my diluted juice, water, and protein shakes throughout the day. I had to set alarms to remind myself to eat and exercise. Now that I am 5 weeks out, I have come a long way already. I've lost 30 lbs post surgery, I have been able to take larger swallows of liquids at a higher rate as well, and best of all I can finally eat ALMOST NORMAL FOOD! Basically over the course of this past month, I have cooked in bulk and eaten the same thing for 2 weeks at a time, interjecting some fruits when I could. I have my first follow up appointment with my doctor tomorrow and I know he is going to nail me on my protein consumption because I am horrible about remembering to drink my shakes, but I am trying. They are just disgusting and I am getting burnt out on them. If you guys have any suggestions on different types of protein shakes or unflavored powders, I would appreciate them. I need them to be somewhat budgetable though. Currently on Sam's Premier Chocolate powder. Anyways, thanks for listening to my ramblings and I look forward to hearing from you guys. Share away btw. I love learning of other's experiences!

Five months out and exhausted
hermione53 replied to hermione53's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks, everyone, for your responses. My nutritionist thinks I should keep the calorie level where it is but add in a serving of fruit and a serving of grains per day. I don't know what I think of that since it'll kick me out of ketosis. I'm consulting with my psychiatrist this morning bc it's possible that this is depression, which is something I've struggled with since childhood. -
how long did it take to heal
Seattle WLS Newbie replied to nana perez's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
How are you all feeling? I had surgery on 4/24 and am just making it through my first stall (it lasted 2 weeks) I've lost 15lbs since surgery. Liquids are hard for me to get down and water is the worst. Super bummed bc I LOVED cold filtered water 24/7 prior to surgery. -
I haven't taken any meds for my diabetes since the day before my surgery. I was given one dose of insulin the first night in the hospital as my bs spiked to 225. Everyday since it has been completely normal between 75-120. So far so good. i am so happy with this outcome thus far.

Also meant to add that I don't want to stop Keto bc it really helps reduce cravings. -
Just a suggestion: if you're really over drinking them, you could stop the order and give what you've got to a food pantry. Lots of elderly people need protein like that. My state hasn't approved Insure providing shakes even though I'm pretty sure I'd get covered. I'm hoping it gets approved soon bc I drink shakes 1-2 times a day. I'd hate to think that part of the hold up in concern over people abusing the prescription.

Hello everyone! I'm five months post-op and have lost 55 pounds. My goal is to lose 10 pounds a month over the next three months if I can during the "honeymoon" period. I'm currently eating keto (high fat/ low carb/ meeting or exceeding protein goals) with an average of 1100 calories a day. I'm shooting for 1000 but 1100 has been the average for two weeks. I'm keeping paper food logs in addition to tracking in My Fitness Pal as part of new mindful eating therapy. On paper I also track when I eat, where I eat, my hunger level, cravings, and what the circumstances and feelings are. My therapist noticed that I wrote repeatedly how tired I felt even on days when I'd slept well the night before. Every two weeks I also have had something of a binge day (1500-2000 calories, usually high carb). The therapist told me that I'm exhausted and spiking with calories/ carbs like this because I'm eating too little and am going too many hours without eating. I eat three meals and a snack every day and am hitting my macros, particularly the protein. On that I range from 65-100 grams, usually landing at around 75 grams. Questions for you: is feeling so tired at this point normal? Is 1100 calories too low at 5 months? I'm in my late 40s and am 5'4". I haven't been exercising as much bc I'm so drained at the end of the day. I get in an average of 6,000 steps a day when I had been hitting 10-12,000 and eating about 1300-1400 calories a day. The therapist is encouraging me to tune in to what my body wants and eat what it wants, but I've always had a hard time knowing what it wants vs what I crave.

Weight related problems you didn't know about
QTR-nevermore replied to Jordan Flake's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My pedigree goes back through Anna Flake. Funny thing... one year I was at the reunion and I saw Aunt Gerda in some theater for some event. She had fed me homemade ice cream sandwiches out of her freezer when I was little, so I remembered her fondly and went up to say hello. At my salutation she drew herself up starchily, and asked down her nose, "who are you?" I repeated my name, but she was not impressed. I thought a second, then said "I'm Anna's granddaughter." That did it. She beamed and enfolded me to her bosom with joy like a long-lost child. Family. Flake family. Interesting. Anyway, is your first name William? I love that repeating name. Re your question, I had my surgery through the center that was running a medical research study I was involved in in my state, so I got a bit of a break on the price. It worked well. -

Apple1 replied to Newme17's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Sweet as peaches I would say yes! I expected to feel worse than I have. I think I was mentally preparing myself for the worst. The first day was rough because I hate feeling nauseous and throwing up, but everyday since I have been feeling better and better. I think for me the greatest thing is the hope of my diabetes going into remission. It is early yet to claim victory since I am only on clear liquids, but since day 2 my bs haven't gone above 115.
