I'm sure there are others who know way more than me but here's some that I found to be good. Fish- Just about any kind although I think cod is up towards the top as far as protein, also calamari is a great source of protein but be careful as it can be chewy and don't get it fried. Cottage cheese- It's basic but gives you good protein Eggs- I usually have them scrambled or boiled Hamburger- Make sure you get the extra lean type Those are some of my big ones. Hope this helps you. For the first few weeks it will probably be hard to get enough protein without powders and supplements but once you get to mushies and regular food it gets much easier. Make sure you follow your doctors guidelines no matter what as some of these foods you wont be able to have for several weeks. Good luck!! Christy

I am not dieting, I eat well and I track every single thing I eat (have done so for a year and a half). My dr says 1400 cals a day is fine (thanks for your opinion however you're not my dr). I am currently 288lbs and 5'7" I haven't been diagnosed with gerd but I have to take nexium everyday and my dr has Mentioned it before. I don't really eat many carbs (unless from fruit). I eat mostly veggies and dairy (can't really tolerate meat of any sort while pregnant). I drink Protein shakes everyday (low cal low carb low sugar). I know alot about food and nutrition. I don't drink full sugar drinks, there is never juice in my house. Water, skin milk and almond milk (unsweetened) only. I have been checked for thyroid and there never seems to be an issue. I will get the surgery regardless, but I've come to find that most people didn't eat very well before surgery and they had to completely change the types of food they eat. The mushy stage post op seems alot like what I already eat everyday.

Dizziness

OMG girl me too. Its aweful isn't it. It was low when I went for my post op appt Monday and I felt very jittery today so I went to my local md. and my bp was regular. (they even took it 3 xs) and the average was low. I wasn't anemic, I did ask for a B12 shot and he said most people who have these kind of surgerys will need them . and I have not started exercising so I know for me it can't be that yet. I told him Im suppose to eat the size of my fist and he looked at my fist and said you are probably starving yourself, eat alittle more. Its definitely a balance of eating the proteins versus the carbs. I have contacted a nutritionst so hopefully that will help me. Someone else mentioned the low blood sugar. because we do eat more proteins then carbs sometimes, go to your local md as suggested, there shouldn't be a charge to just check your bp. Let us know what you find out! -
Everything you need for your first week of post op diet. I'd just take your food list to the store with you. Start trying different Protein shakes to find one you like now, otherwise you may be stuck with a yucky one after surgery.

There will be protein waters at Walmart. Might not have as much as a shake but you can drink more. Just watch for sugar content and aim for 0.

My health care partner nurse told me to increase my protein by 10 - 20 grams a day because I felt that my weight loss was slowing. I was doing between 50 and 60. So I did and I lost 6.2 lbs this week!!

Am I eating Enough?
irkenpanda replied to irkenpanda's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the encouragement and reassurance Lara Saved, I mix two scoops of the vanilla Isopure with about 8-10 oz of Soy milk. I can't stand the taste some days so i also add a little sugar free Torani syrup to flavor it. I believe the Isopure is 50gm for two scoops and the Protein in my soy milk (8th Continent) is 6-8 grams depending on how much I use. It takes me about one and a half to two hours to drink it. My heartburn is wicked evil if I don't take my pill about 10 minutes before I eat or drink. I have also noticed that some Crystal light will make my heartburn act up too which it wasn't a problem before. I am on famotidine and everyone here says to get on a PPI but when I asked my doctor, he just said to stay on the famotidine and see how that goes. I wonder why - maybe it has something to do with PPI's absorbing your Calcium? I dunno.............................. if anyone does, feel free to comment. -
Am I eating Enough?
Rev Me Up! replied to irkenpanda's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your eating volume sounds about right - I am 1 month out and I can eat 2 oz of food consistently. It may be more than 4 bites because I am taking really small bites and it takes about 20 minutes for me to eat that little bit of food. Everybody says we'll be able to eat more in a few months :-) I eat about 6 times a day to average about 700 calories. I can't stomach the Protein drinks, so I eat protein dense food several times a day. Hang in there-- Lara -
I was going to say the same thing about needing Protein to make sure you get enough since the capacity is so small. I'm in Redwood City! We should have an SF area get together some time! Maybe to taste all the many samples of Protein drinks I have acquired... I may be sleeved as soon as two weeks from now.

I will stay overnigt too. I am glad thats an option.

Take a deep breath...you're only a week post-op...your body is tired, sore, in the process of healing, and it is craving nutrients; the lack there of has everything out of balance. Your emotional toddler tantrum is normal at the height of this post-op healing time. So, go find a quiet place. Cry if you have to. Gather yourself together, take deep breaths, and figure out what you have to do. Do you need to go buy some mashed potato flakes? During this stage I was allowed scrambled eggs. Are you allowed that, with some cheese? What other soft food options do you have? In the calm after the storm, problem solve and find a solution that works for you. You're going to do fine. Before you know it the worst of the post-op dieting will be over and you're going to be rocking that sleeve like its nobodies business! Good luck to you and your journey.

I ended up with a few tears and a tbsp of humus : ) And I know mashed potatoes aren't the best, but figured adding nutritional yeast and unflavored Protein powder would help. Thanks for letting me vent : ). Any way to help even out some of these crazy mood swings?

13 mths post op
SeahawksFan replied to t.deramo12@icloud.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sleeve is just a tool so you still have to eat Protein first, drink Water, and exercise. If you haven 't been doing those things then your not going to lose as much. That doesn't mean it's to late though. Go back to the basics and you will see the scale move again. ~LA -
Are you eating/drinking anything other than the Protein shakes, Water, or milk? Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App

I feel so guilty!
auntlucy replied to fletcher97701's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Fletcher, Don't beat yourself up! You have already done it and you can't go back and correct it. But, what you can do is make a decision right now to stay on track. If you are like me, your dieting history probably included so many starts and stops. As soon as I blew a diet, I would think, "well, I already messed up, so I might as well eat this too." Don't let that happen to you this time. Instead, get focused on letting your body heal...that is the whole point of the liquid phase. If you keep eating solids before your body is fully healed, you could have some complications. I came to love tomato soup during the liquid phase. My doctor even let me crumble up some crackers in the soup. If you make the soup with milk instead of Water, you are adding some Protein that way. Some milk has more protein than others. If you are in an area with a Braum's store, their milk has a lot of protein compared to most. Hang in there! You can do this. I know that it seems like the liquid phase will last forever, but you'll be through it before you know it! -

I feel so guilty!
DragonSingapore replied to fletcher97701's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agreed with the others. Don't feel guilty. First of all, you will be allowed to eat that kind of food once your stomach heals. So it is not like you were eating some forbidden food that packs in the calories. Just get back on track. I am on my 16th day of liquids and I have experimented ever so slightly here and there with a little thicker stuff....or today I had to break down and have a very runny boiled egg to get some Protein in me before my workout. The main issue with the first few weeks is to allow proper healing to take place more so than the number of calories you are taking in. You will note that most doctors say that ONLY in the first few weeks can you have certain drinks/liquids that are higher in calories that you should not consume following your healing. This is to allow you to have enough energy on a very reduced diet so take advantage of this, enjoy it and view it as the start of a longer journey. From a view of 30,000 I think we can all agree that 2 oz of Beans barely registers! -
A liquid is technically anything that can go up a straw and at 10 days out they can be quite thick. There isnt any need to live on shakes. You could blend up a decent Soup - one that contains meat and Pasta for example. If you need to thin it, do so with some chicken stock or a canned tomatoes, Water or milk, depending what it is. You can also blend fruit, yogurt and an egg with some flavouring, it doesnt have that horrid soy-ish Protein shake taste. You can put bran or other Cereal in it too. You can thin anything to a liquid, even a roast dinner. Just make it into a savoury soup with stock. Just keep it to healthy, energy giving foods and dont eat them in solid form until you are allowed to.
