Omg my port is detached!!
Lizalee replied to Stay_Tuned's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dear stay tuned: That is frustrating, no doubt about it. Sounds like your port flipped...and it unfortunately DOES happen. My tubing kinked, and my second fill resulted in WAY too much Fluid in since they couldn't tell if it was going in or not. Once I drank Water, it was obvious it HAD gone in I had extreme pain, vomiting. This was on June 6th - also the night of my 3rd child's high school graduation -- in our home town 60 miles away. So, I ended up missing graduation and having an emergency port revision instead. It's just a memory now, and I was upset at the time, but what are you going to do? It sets us back, it's not convenient. I've managed to do very well by sticking to the band rules while awaiting for my delayed 2nd fill - which I finally had today - because it was delayed while I re-healed. Hope you can get this fixed real soon and get back in the swing of things. In a few months from now, I won't seem so bad once you're back on track. Hang in there!!!! -
Trouble With My Band After Revision - Did My Surgeon Just Try To Upsell Me?
neekoal replied to neekoal's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks Mis73 - Trust me, I'm not even entertaining the Sleeve comment, I was just horrified and couldn't believe he even said it. As I mentioned, he gave me a fill/adjustment yesterday, I called today because now I'm so tight that I can hardly swallow my own spit, but my stomach is growling and I'm still starving. Evidently, he is i surgery tomorrow and I as told not to force food, drink hot liquids and come in on Saturday. My husband is staring at me like I'm a space alien because every time I swallow anything at all loud ungodly noises come racing out of me. They did do a barium thing yesterday, he does one every time we do a fill or adjustment so I assume the placement is fine as he didn't say a word. It was after my barium thing that he made the Sleeve comment and said the revisions don't work. That is a really good idea about the informational seminar, I hadn't even thought of that, a great example of why the forum boards are helpful. -
Trouble With My Band After Revision - Did My Surgeon Just Try To Upsell Me?
Bre1621 replied to neekoal's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a port revision (mine had a hole and was leaking the saline) and I didn't have any issues whatsoever so please don't think that is how you are supposed to feel! -
When did you decide it was time for a revision?
JohnnyMadison replied to ryan_86's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It's true that GBP (revision) patients maintain at least a 10% or more weight loss than sleeve, so theoretically revision is just giving yourself a better chance. I revised for acid reflux and "only" had regained ~ 25# of 130# lost and was still < 30 BMI at revision. But I will say that losing the 17# I have lost since 12/16, which is a higher rate as a % and # as compared to sleeve, has made me much happier. With that said, I'm only 3 weeks out so I'm actually scared I will lose more than I want and look like an old man again with that drawn face. And then I'm scared that I'm going to regain as well. I guess I'll never be happy. Listen, our stomachs/bodies often betray us and make us hungrier than we need to be. And the food supply is stacked against healthy eating. So if you can get a revision to keep more weight off then I would do it whenever you are ready. It's a tough, tough, battle out there. If you have acid reflux, however, I wouldn't hesitate to revise sooner than later. I developed Barrett's Esophagus which is miserable to get at 44 and I'm hoping will go away with some healing. -
MGB or RNY? Can't decide
MeliE82 replied to Loriey's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I can’t testify to the results but I personally chose from Band to RNY , I have Esophagitis, GERD and a port leak , I didn’t want to take a baby step and then have to do another revision ( if that was possible ) in the future . -
Double revision. Band to sleeve to bypass..
NewBeginnings2018 replied to A_new_sara's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Oh my goodness, what a journey! I'm so sorry you had to go through all this! Was your GP revision in MX or here in the states? The positive of all this is that you are done with the tough part and from here on out, every day will get easier! -
I am so sorry to read your post...not something we like to read. My band is still properly positioned, but band issues made it imperative to remove all of the Fluid in my band several months ago. I have continued to lose weight slowly, and have been exercising more. My surgeon has advised me that I can keep my band for now, but I will need to be monitored more closely to be certain that it has not slipped. He also said that repositioning a slipped band is only marginally effective. The stats he went over with me pretty much validated that a majority of people who had their bands removed regained weight unless they had revision surgery. I hope all will go well for you, whatever path you choose.

So I was waiting to be banded for several weeks. Mind you the last time I was in the hospital as a patient was the day I was born! I have never had a stitch or broken bone or ER visit, so being banded was a huge decision for me. I was banded on 04/29 and to my dismay, I was complete closed and nothing was passing through the band. They removed whatever little saline was in the band and still nothing. So after vomiting most of the day into the night, on 04/30 I went back into surgery for a revision. Of course since I was vomiting so violently the band and my stomach was completely twisted. Surgery was done, and during surgery a tube from my nose to my stomach was inserted to prevent vomiting. I went for the GI and had a trickle flowing through the band. I spent the night and was released Saturday at noon. Having the tube in my nose was the worst experience in my life! The rest of the day at home was uneventful, drank what i was suppose to, went to bed and woke up at 1:30 am vomiting. Wasn't really concerned since it was once and I felt OK. 6:30 am vomited again violently and called to Dr. who said to meet him at the ER. Went to the ER on Sunday morning, went for a GI and found that I had no flow at all. :cursing: They wanted a tube reinserted from my stomach to my nose to prevent further vomiting. The ER Nurse who tired to put it in didn't know what the heck she was doing since the tube starting coming out of my mouth. And of course she than realizes, oops, I used a tube that was to large. :cursing:She pulls it out after I am screaming like a lunatic on crack! :angry:At that point I am covered in blood from my nose and screaming at the nurse. Thankfully another nurse came and inserted the tube and I was sedated. I spend the rest of Sunday in the hospital with the tube in my nose and me being the worst patient any nurse could dream of. I was so miserable I was about to tell the Dr. to take the band out, I was done! Monday came and back into surgery I went! So within 4 days I was operated on 3 times! Came out of surgery and the GI showed I was Free Flowing! I was so happy and excited. The tube was removed which made a happy camper and the best patient ever! LOL. I spend the night Monday to Tuesday, went for another GI and everything was perfect. The Dr. said he would discharge me whenever I wanted. So for my own sanity, I spent Tuesday to Wednesday in the hospital. Woke up the next morning still flowing, no issues! Went home Wednesday afternoon and have been doing great so far. Already lost lbs! But what a way to lose it!:cursing:

SO MANY QUESTIONS
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to kritterk's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Question 1- I struggled. There was a time right at the beginning of the pandemic (1st surgery was Dec 2019) where all I could drink besides hot tea was grape powderade zero (hated artificial grape pre-op) and everywhere was out. I distinctly remember crying in my car, like full on grief crying. I had buyers remorse for several weeks after that wondering if I’d ever be normal again. Be prepared with emotional/ therapeutic support if you’re already battling disordered eating. Question 2- A dry cough is indeed a symptom of gerd. For me, it’s now hiccups. If you’ve ever heard those honking plastic chickens just know that’s what I sound like. I did end up having a revision to RNY and hiatal hernia repair. They don’t remove your stomach, it’s still in there, they just bypass most of it and attach it in a y shape to another part of the intestines while keeping a small portion attached. The only reason I have hiccups again is because I have another hiatal hernia that needs repaired. Would I do it all over again knowing the journey I’ve been on? Absolutely. Would I also be more prepared mentally? Also, absolutely. -
Hello all! I'm pre-surgery. waiting on a surgery date - I have been approved by insurance but will be out of the country for two weeks in July and told them I'd like to wait until back. I have lots of questions but two of them are below. I'm hopeful someone can wrap their brain around what I'm asking because I have struggled to find anyone who is able to really answer it for me. It's not that they are telling me what I don't want to hear, it's just not addressing the crux of the question. I'm hopeful this will make sense: Once you have WLS, in the first couple of months post op - what is your mind doing? I know people struggle to hit their protein and water goals a lot. I know it's a huge learning curve to adjust to the new stomach and relearn your limits and to feel full faster. But for those of us with food addictions who are looking at this as tool to get us through therapy and really force change - what is your mind doing?? when you realize you can't anymore - are you ok with that? are you angry? are you still craving the food? are you sad? are you relieved? are you satisfied? what is your brain telling you and your heart feeling in those moments as you adapt to not eating foods you used to crave, or if you can eat them how does it feel to limit those portions? I understand this is a tool. I KNOW this is necessary for healing and retraining and to make it through therapy successfully but I'm really wanting to try to know what to expect my mind and heart to feel when this massive part of my life is just ripped away. I am probably to equating it (albeit maybe not fairly) to a drug addiction rehab where they make you go cold turkey... i know i won't have physical withdrawls (aside from minor, potential repercussions while i learn to adapt to the new food intake) but what is my mind going to feel? what will i tell myself? what was your experience? does this question make sense? Also - i've never had problems with Heartburn or GERD beyond any sort of one-off meal once in a blue moon that may have caused a smidge of heartburn but it didn't last long and those instances are few and far between. BUT - I started taking Omeprizole because i clear my throat a lot and a nurse friend of mine told me it's likely acid reflux. I've not really noticed a difference in taking omeprizole so maybe it's not acid reflux and is just a weird habit. Anyway - should I be concerned about developing heartburn? My biggest fear with this is worrying that they might have to revise to bypass and i don't want a bypass. i'm fine with losing 80% of my somach but i'm not ok with bypassing it altogether... any thoughts or experiences anyone can speak on?
-
Nope, not with my band installation back in 2011. But I did have to give myself lovenox injections 2x a day for 7 days after my band to bypass revision. I don't see why you'd need them for the band installation as there should have been zero internal cutting.

Paralyzed leg with weight gain and Dr freaked me out
vanwest83 replied to Happyinside45's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is coming from someone who has a lap band since the end of 2006. I originally tried to have an RNY at the time the insurance denied it. I have never had real success with my band, lost 40 lbs and that's it. I throw up a lot. I'm now about 25 lbs more then when I had surgery. I wasn't the best patient had a lot of traumatic things after the band happen but regardless I always feel hungry. I'm now in the process of trying to get approved for the RNY. If I could go back I wouldn't of gotten the band I wish I would of fought for the other surgery. But I was only 23. I recently went to my group nutrition meeting their were two other prior lap bands and we were all still obese and having revisions done. -
Yes it is amazing how many patients eventually revise to a sleeve or a gastric bypass, the band seems to be a quick grab for cash costing around 8K, in actual theatre and equipment cost is less than 3K, 10 of those is 30K and that would be a weekly work for WL Dr in NSW
-
Actually that's not true at all. In fact, studies show the band has a very low failure rate and the majority of Lap Band patients maintain their weight loss long term. It also shows that 2 year weight loss results are comparable to the Gastric Bypass or Sleeve. Here is the study: http://www.futurity.org/health-medicine/weight-stays-off-long-after-lap-band-surgery/ The main cause of revision to other WLS isn't band failure, it's patient failure. The exception to that rule would be in the case of the old 4cc bands- which have been discontinued in the UK and US due to a high complication rate.

Gas, bloating, etc. + any traveling for the surgery?
Amforshort replied to kasemcd's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Walk walk walk! It sounds stupid and everyone says it! I flew 3 days post-op. Not painful but exhausting. Wear compression socks and move your feet around. I walked so much in the hospital and didn't have any gas pain! I had a band 1 1/2 years ago and the gas pain was the worst pain I had ever felt. So I walked and 2alked and walked. Worked! No gas pain at all. I am not 5 days post-op from a band to sleeve revision. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app -
That's because you have a reason to continue to lie: faith simply can't withstand scrutiny. You have to tell yourself that atheists have faith so you can continue to pretend that everyone has faith. Oh, I see now - you're confusing faith with trust. You don't have faith your feet will hold you up. You trust that they will since you have experience and evidence that back that assumption up. You don't have faith that your car brakes will work, you trust that they will since they have before. If something had recently happened to the car, or if you'd neglected to get it inspected, you would not trust them to work. If this is the fickle nature of your faith, I appreciate you outlining it so clearly. Your desperate revision of language to suit your own agenda is noted, but ultimately pointless. It's transparent. This is another outright lie. Keeping a specific god out of PUBLIC schools is simply logic - not everyone has the same imaginary master, or one at all. Unless public schools are teaching kids that there is no god, then it's not atheistic. You're just mad that it's not forcing your version of your imaginary master on everyone. Tough. This is America - not Saudi Arabia. Students that prescribe to a specific religion are not barred from praying in school. Public schools simply can't force everyone to pray to their imaginary master. You would not be trying to push this blatantly anti-American baloney if this country were mostly Muslim and it was their prayers being pushed on your children. You seem to lack even a shred of empathy. I find that chilling. Your imaginary master shouldn't be included in anything public. Churches can do what they will, parents are entirely free to corrupt and stunt the minds of their children with their total nonsense. You simply can't force everyone to do as you do. I understand why you and your ilk hate such freedom so much, but please understand some of us like liberty and other American values.

Help Making the Right Choice
Kristina J. replied to tamarlarae's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh dear, please, do NOT go with the band!!! :-/ I have had two of them now! Please take a minute and read my story on my profile. The band gave me some up front success but then nothing but problems and multiple surgeries on top of all the maintenance!! It's taken 10 years, but I am finally getting this thing out of me! There are so many people with stories just like mine. I wish I had never messed with the lap band, and wish even more that after I did and had it taken out, that someone had told me about the sleeve before I tried it again (though it wasn't near as well known in 2006). There's a board here called "Lap Band to Sleeve Revision" ... Go read up there and also on lapbandtalk.com under the complications section. There are definitely risks with either, but the long term (2+ years) complications of the band far outweigh that of the sleeve! Good luck with your decision though. I know there's nothing easy about it. And I certainly understand the appeal of the band... but it's a trick -
Having Band Removed Insurance question.
taylorrae9 replied to lessISmore's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hello lessismore, I am in the same process as you. I went to the MD today and after trying for 18 months to loose wieght we desided I should have a revision. Something we have been talking about for a year although he wishes I would keep trying to make the band work. I have a choice and the revision is already approved. I am just torn about my options. I asked for the Duodenal Switch and he thought I would have a lot of problems... long term and suggested the Gastric bypass and then we talked about the sleeve. I am scheduled for August 15 at 7 am. I am afraid if I do not do the bypass piece I might regret it. Yet, I weigh 242 most days and he thinks no matter what I do I will loose 60-70 pounds which is okay for me. It was hard today because I wanted him to take the Fluid out of the band so I could eat but the last time we did that I gained 20 pounds. He would like me to keep trying and talked about only taking a small amount of saline out and that we might hit the magic spot. I agreed because unless I wanted the band removed and no more wls he was clear loosing more weight would be ideal and that gaining so was not an option. I ended up falling apart after the appointment. I don't cry often but today I did. I am so disappointed that the band did not work for me and that I have struggled so hard with only lost 60 pounds. Now, I will face another surgery. I am torn about which one. I am so tired and I feel so discouraged most of the time but I will move forward. The doctor suggested I might be consuming more calories than I think. I offered to write it all down and let him take a look next time we meet. It seems the story of my life is someone saying are you sure your not eating more...are you exercising.... He was nice about it but it was hard for me. So for me I am facing surgery a week before school starts for my two girls and then my son goes a week later to preschool. The timing is a bit off but I am really tired of not eating and not loosing weight. We were going to put it off until they were settled in but not eating is really shoving me over the edge. If I am going to suffer I should at least be loosing weight. It is so funny because I am doing all this so I can get a hip replacement. I just want to feel better and be better for my family. I want a better quailty of life. Take care, Taylorrae9 -
Interesting that we have similar timeframes! How was the revision. Is there anything I should know in advance.

When did you go back to work?
XXShelXX replied to blackfalls's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a MRI tech. I sit for the scans but also have to do a lot of walking and lifting patients. I went back at 2 weeks but would have liked one more week. I had revision from band to sleeve, gall bladder removed and hernia repair. One more week woulda been perfect. -
Light weights 190/210 lbs Revisions welcome
babysteps posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Ok hi all I'm wanting to Touch base with the light weights and revision RNY's. I myself am a lightweight and a so to be revision. Sleeve to Rny . I had the sleeve 6 months ago and only lost 35lb after 12 weeks if no weight loss and 14 weeks of no inches lost It was suggested to me to get a revision . I'm getting the RNY for its metabolic reset value and to loss the rest of my 60lbs. I was 244 the day I was sleeved and 209 today 5"6. So how was your weight loss? Did you loss slow? How many lbs a week did you loss? Are you a first time lightweight or are you a revision light weight? -
I think it worked for me, it was just a torture device at times . I don't miss taking acid reducers everyday. But I can say now since I don't have a band or anything anymore that I miss restriction of any type. My doc wants me to get a sleeve but for the meantime, I'm calorie counting and working out and have still managed to gain weight. My removal was covered by my insurance as a revision (I was supposed to be rebanded, but it didn't work out).

Heartburn Post-Op?
Donna1017 replied to TheGirlInThePinkScarf's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely call your doctor, but I have it worse now that I have had RNY then I had it with the sleeve (gerd was the reason I was revised to RNY). My doc says sometimes it takes the body a little while to stop producing gastric juices.
