How much have you lost?

Im 5ft 6 had the bypass 3 weeks ago and im down 33lbs x
  2. Had my sleeve to bypass revision today and in a lot of pain. I’ve had seven surgeries in the past for different issues and this by far is the worst for post-op. Hoping someone will tell me it gets better each day

    Back to work

I had bypass and went to work in 10 days. Could have gone back in 5 .
  4. I have a doctor in mine This is a revision surgery I have a sleeve I want to get gastric bypass
  5. Often these issues are related to vitamin malabsorption after RNY. My father is 10 years out on his bypass and still suffers these low blood pressure episodes caused by a mix of changing Vitamin D & Iron Deficiencies. I don't know what your labs tested for or whether they were fasting tests or not, but that's usually the place to start (assuming you can rule out dehydration, which would be the most common cause). All that said see what the cardiologist says and don't try to self salt-medicate.
  6. Vega I thought I was the only one with this. It does not appear to have anything to do with eating sometimes it happens late in the evening while watching TV. I had a Gastric Bypass about 4 years ago and this just started about 1 year ago. It takes my breath away and sometimes it gets a little scary. Would love to know if I can do something to avoid this. It doesn’t happen all the time but when it does, does not feel good at all.
  7.
Hello Everyone. I was interested in gastric bypass but after doing research, I don't want it at all. The lap band looks like a good option, at least from everything I've read so far anyway. The problem is my insurance doesn't cover it and I don't have a lot of money.

I've been overweight since I was about 20. Several years ago I exercized really hard and lost 50 pounds over a few months. But I've gradually gained it all back plus, and now I weigh about 350. I've recently started getting chronic lower back pain. It seems like the least effort makes me sweat... Needless to say, it's no fun.

What I want to know is, where can I get a quality lap band surgery at the lowest price? I live in OR. I am willing to travel to Mexico but if there's a place of comperable price here in the US, I'd rather go there. The sites advertising lap band surgery in Mexico sound good. But I'd really like to hear from those of you who got it done there recently and a year or so ago. Did they do a good job? Where did you go? What Dr.? How much did it cost?

If anyone got it done locally in OR, where did you get it done? If it was covered, what insurance do you have?

Another concern I have is about obstruction. A few months after you get the surgery and you're back on solid food, what happens if you eat a bite of something like meat that doesn't easily dissolve with water and you forget to chew that one bite really well? Will it almost definately obstruct the band?

Does anyone know if medicare will cover lap band surgery?

Sorry this is so long and thanks ahead of time to those who respond!

Emily

  8. I'm also 11 days post-op. I'm under orders from surgeon to continue with the 3 shakes a day and non-calorie liquids until my next appointment on November 9th. I am so dang glad, too. I am not ready to be figuring out the food thing just yet. I like my simple plan for now. I bought a food scale and more sets of measuring cups to help with the process once it is time.

    Found an interesting Blog

Poked me to get my long term results started. Here is an excerpt I found: Ann Surg. 2010 Aug;252(2):319-24. doi: 10.1097/SLA.0b013e3181e90b31. Long-term results of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for obesity.Himpens J, Dobbeleir J, Peeters G. Author information Abstract OBJECTIVE:To determine the mid- and long-term efficacy and possible side effects of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy as treatment for morbid obesity. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA:Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is still controversial as single and final treatment for morbid obesity. Some favorable short-term results have been published, however long-term results are still lacking. METHODS:In the period between November 2001 and October 2002, 53 consecutive morbidly obese patients who, according to our personal algorithm, were qualified for restrictive surgery were selected for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Of the 53 patients, 11 received an additional malabsorptive procedure at a later stage because of weight regain. The percentage of excess weight loss (EWL) was assessed at 3 and 6 years postoperatively. A retrospective review of a prospectively collected database was performed for evaluation after 3 years. Recently, after the sixth postoperative year, patients were again contacted and invited to fill out a questionnaire. RESULTS:Full cooperation was obtained in 41 patients, a response rate of 78%. Although after 3 years a mean EWL of 72.8% was documented, after 6 years EWL had dropped to 57.3%, which according to the Reinhold criteria is still satisfactory. These results included 11 patients who had benefited from an additional malabsorptive procedure (duodenal switch) and 2 patients who underwent a "resleeve" between the third and sixth postoperative year. Analyzing the results of the subgroup of 30 patients receiving only sleeve gastrectomy, we found a 3-year %EWL of 77.5% and 6+ year %EWL of 53.3%. The differences between the third and sixth postoperative year were statistically significant in both groups. Concerning long-term quality of life patient acceptance stayed good after 6 + years despite the fact that late, new gastro-esophageal reflux complaints appeared in 21% of patients. CONCLUSIONS:In this long-term report of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, it appears that after 6+ years the mean excess weight loss exceeds 50%. However, weight regain and de novo gastroesophageal reflux symptoms appear between the third and the sixth postoperative year. This unfavorable evolution might have been prevented in some patients by continued follow-up office visits beyond the third year. Patient acceptance remains good after 6+ years. Comment inSurgery: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy as the first-line surgical option for morbid obesity. [Nat Rev Endocrinol. 2010] I thought this site had some good stats also: www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/gastric-sleeve-surgery.html Hope this helps.

    Dealing with Stress

11 Weeks Post OP Weight: 261 Total Weight Lost: -43.9 BMI: 42.3 Let’s just say that last week was a bad week. Personal issues topped off with work issues. Before the surgery I used to deal with stress by eating. I would get a pint of ice cream or stuff myself with whatever fast food restaurant was my obsession at the time. But now that I do not have that option anymore, how do I handle those bad days? Unfortunately I sacrificed my workouts. Instead of going to the gym and working out those frustrations of the week, I went home and hid from the world. By the end of the week I was disappointed in myself for not keeping my momentum going and got back on the exercise track. I feel more accomplished at the end of the day when I have done some sort of workout. Eating is still going good. I am still consuming less than 1000 calories a day. It continues to blow my mind. I don’t feel like I am depriving myself. I have started to notice things are getting easier every day. Walking up the stairs to my apartment. Simple movements that used to be difficult are now slightly easier. It feels good to know that these changes are happening and that it will only continue to get better! The best thing is seeing people that I haven’t seen in a long period of time. I had breakfast with my grandma last week and she was astonished with how I looked. She was amazed. I haven’t seen here since a week post op. I really looking forward to November when I see my parents whom I haven’t seen since last November and my brother whom I haven’t seen since one month post op. Other than that, not much more to report. All is well and moving forward. I am continuing to do my workouts and training. Three month post op follow up in a couple of weeks.
  11. Hi I haven’t posted in a while I had a suite in July 2015 and have experienced severe acid reflux. Now I am up for a bypass. For those who have had sleeves and had this problem and had the surgery of bypass. Have you guys lost more weight?. Did the acid reflex go away? How much weight can I expect to lose? Is it going to be as painful as the first surgery?

    Sleeve to Bypass

I was sleeved back in 2012, gained back 60 pounds and severe GERD so I’m going bypass distal in 3 months, hoping it’s a better solution
  13. Hello all, I am a little nervous but I am really look forward to my surgery June 6th in San Jose, CA with Dr. McKeen. He is the best. I made the decision after thinking about gastric bypass. As soon as the decision was done I was on the fast track to get this moving. It took me about 6 weeks to complete all the pre surgery items. What a thorough checking up that took. In any case, I am weighing in at 285 lbs. Funny the timing. I am putting the energy back into myself and my health. A dear friend of mine who has supported me through my weight loss previously is not speaking to me right now. It hurts really bad that I will not have his support when I go through the biggest transition to date. I didn't tell him about the surgery because we haven't been speaking as frequent. And when I did we ceased communication for another reason. I feel like my life coach is gone. All I can do is rely on myself. I know God is in my corner. Thank you for listening.

    What size is your sleeve?

Mine was a 32f. I had my surgery July 4th (one week tomorrow) and I've lost near 20 pounds (30 counting the one week Preop diet) and I can actually drink a lot more fluids than I thought. Mine was also oversewn. I know some people say it doesn't make a difference but to me it did. I paid out of pocket though I have insurance and bougie size played a part in my decision to self pay. I wanted the most restriction even if only as a placebo. I guess I will know more in a month or so. For me, it was either the smallest possible sleeve or go with bypass. Started at 255 before Preop diet.

    New

Hello, I'm new to this site. I wanted to know if someone else is having the same issue as me or if it's normal. I had the gastric bypass done April 30, 2019 at the time of the surgery I was 287 lbs. I am now 4 weeks out and I am at 269, I've lost only 18 lbs and 1 to 2 inches. Are 18 lbs good? I see post of other patients that have lost a lot more, I know everyone is different I just want to know if others have lost that amount or close to that amount 4 weeks post op.

Help, ive been stuck for 3+ weeks

Firstly, stalls are a normal part of weight loss. Frustrating & stressful though they can be. While on average they last around 1-3 weeks they can last longer. It just depends upon how much time your body needs to reset itself (metabolic rate, digestive hormones, etc.) in response to your current needs at your lower weight. You just need to let your body taker the time it needs - don’t stress it more by making more changes. Not everyone reaches their goal weight. The average weight loss is about 65% for sleeve & bypass of the weight you’re to lose to put you in a healthier range. So, if my maths is correct, you’ve exceeded that average so far - yay! Doesn’t matter what weight your surgeon wants you at, your body will greatly influence your final weight - your new set point. There are also lifestyle & personal preference choices to consider too - what weight are you happiest at & allows you to enjoy your life as you want without you having to restrict your choices to maintain your weight. Our rate of loss slows as we get closer to our final weight. Sometimes it’s so slow it seems like we’re not really losing at all. And remember it doesn’t matter how long it takes to reach your stabilised weight - you’ll get there in the time that’s best for you. Don’t give up yet. Stick to your plan. Stay off the scales for a week or two. You may be surprised when you eventually weigh yourself again.
  18. I had the gastric bypass May 11,2023. I was doing good with dropping the weight. But once I got to 160 I’ve stalled out. Idk what to do. Can some one please give me advice. It’s getting really discouraging and depressing. My dr wants me at 135. I’m so close.

10 years out and cannot keep weight on

Hi, I'm 11 years out & am having the same problem w/ keeping weight on, in the last 2 months I've lost almost 25 lbs & 4 sizes. My doctors have no clue what's going on so they sent me to several specialists. I went to a new gastric dr who thinks part of it is my Iron levels. He told me that as a bypass patient we can get some iron from food for about the first 8 years then we can't any longer so we have to get it supplemented (IV iron) he's waiting for blood work to confirm it but I have all the symptoms of it including the urge to always chew ice. Have you ever been checked for your iron? He said even if your basic panel looks ok you may need a more In depth iron count check to make sure. I'm also going for a scope on July 31st to check my pouch & make sure it's nothing else going on because I'm currently have a problem tolerating any meats the only food I have been able to eat is fish. That's been going on about 3 weeks now thank goodness my girlfriend is a chef or I'd be going out of my mind lol! I hope that things get better for you soon!

    Never Hungry.

Hello all, I'm 6 days post op Gastric bypass, and I am never ever hungry. I've been forcing myself to eat a few sips of Protein shakes and some sugar free Jello. The thought and action of eating makes me physically nauseous. I've been taking my anti nauseous medicine, but I don't feel like eating at all. I've been trying to get my fluids in...I generally do okay. I guess I just wanted to know if this is something everyone deals with or if it's normal? ❤️8/17/16
  21. How much do you have to lose? I weighted 251 on the day of surgery and now 14 months later I am at 75 lbs lost. I might had done gastric bypass if I had the money, but I think the sleeve has pretty much the same loss as the band. Go to a different Doctor and get what you want. My doctor told me I would lose all my weight with gastric bypass and about 50% excess weight with band so I am passed that and still going so I think you should check out a nice Doctor. I used Dr Spivak in Houston and he has been great. Cheri
  22. I choose the sleeve, because to me it seems less invasive. The way I see it, with the sleeve they are removing your stomach. With the bypass, they are doing that AND rearranging things. During the seminar I attended Dr. Baker actually talked about how he'd recommend the sleeve over the bypass for most people. There were a couple reasons he'd suggest the bypass, but I'm healthy overall and none of them apply to me. It also helps that I know people who have had it so they can tell me what to expect.
  23. I had some anxiety the morning of surgery.. I was wondering if I was doing the right thing. I believe this is normal to feel like this. I have several years on you though. I am sixty. This was my birthday present to myself. My surgery was at 8:00 a.m. I was told it would take one and one half hours to two hours. I also had hiatal hernia repair during the rny gastric bypass. My surgery took three hours. When I awoke I was in intense pain, my stomach, chest, and shoulder. I was extremely nauseous. Pain level an eight. The anesthesiologist said I was given fentanyl and dilaudid. I am allergic to morphine. Still sensitive to that stuff. Chest pain so intense they did a stat ekg and troponin level to check for a heart attack. After some gas relief in my shoulder and soften and reglan I started feeling a bit better. That was my initial response. Surgery was the tenth. I went home the thirteenth late afternoon. It is the nausea the most that bothers me. I know it will get better. Good luck to you. Paula Sent from my EVO using the BariatricPal App
  24. The Doctors and staff are very good. I had my bypass with Dr. Page and I would recommend him highly. Much of the process depends on your insurance. The Bariatric Nurse Navigator (Amber McNulty) and Nutritionist/Dietician (Andrea Mattison) are always there for you if you have questions or need support. Mt Carmel also has various support groups you can attend before and after surgery. http://www.mountcarmelhealth.com/bariatrics

    Weak Decision?

Hi, as you might have read, my name is Carmen. I am a mother of two, a 13 year old daughter, and a 9 year old son. Currently after 15 years working I am taking a break to continue my education. I am an EMT, and I am going to school for cosmetology. I been in the retail industry all my life. When I became and EMT, it was one if my great accomplishments, I was very happy. I started to work for a busy system in the City of Syracuse, and I was doing OK. At the end of my 15 hour days, I was in serious pain, but i got up every morning at 4am to go to work and do it all over again. But the pain got worst, i was barely able to stand on my feet less carry a heavy bag with an oxygen tank. I took a medical leave to address my condition. Resulting that I have arthritis on my back and my knees are deteriorating and I have tendinitis on my wrist. Anyone with arthritis now that pain only gets worst and it never gets better, I started taking medications for the pain that wouldn't allow me to drive the ambulance in the state. So I had to extend my leave indefinitely. My neck started to hurt, along with my ankles, and even so I decided to start going to school for cosmetology more standing up and more wrist work, What was I thinking? I figure I need to continue working on something I like doing but I want to make more for my work, and I want to work when I want to ( when not in pain). Anyways Its been a journey I am half way my journey (http://bbgbeauty.blogspot.com). My brother ended up in the hospital, also my mother. My brother had developed sleepanea, a sleeping disorder mostly on obese people. He weight at almost 600 pounds. He had let himself go. He was in the hospital for many months until he was able to get out he now weights around 550. He can barely walk, or breathe he ended up with a tracheal tube for life or until he gets his weight under control. Now my mother is battling her foot to diabetes in the hospital and they ha to amputate all her toes. I go trough a lot with them and finally get them into my home and they doing a little better. But its far from over, my mom goes again more times to the hospital and still struggling to keep her leg now in top of everything my boyfriend ends up in the emergency room because of his diabetes. I said to my self no more... I decided I am not going to end up like them, to this date I don't have diabetes, I might be in the border of Sleepanea, I might already have it. I don't have high cholesterol but my blood pressure is very high and I take medications for these. I talk to them about loosing weight and that we could do it together, they seem reluctant to the idea of eating less and healthier. I guess I am on my own right now. Each person's health is their own decision. My mom is somewhat supportive, she "tried to keep me under control with sweats" and by trying i mean she waves them in front of me and says resist the temptations! lol . My boyfriend has gone so far to the info group and support groups in the area for me and have allow me to expend a little extra on healthy foods. We all know that healthy food is more expensive... but thats another topic. So I went to the information group to gather information about the Gastric Bypass Surgery, and I have learn a lot. I also went online to research, and I been to support groups in the area. I filled my paperwork and submitted to the surgeons. I am awaiting a date to start the process. It should be this week. They called me last week but I was missing my doctors referral, which hopefully they faxed today. I been on a diet on my own so i can gradually start my transition to better eating. Its been hard. I am limited to 1,400 calories a day, witch is not much compared to what I was eating before. its like torture, to the point that I don't want to leave my room into the world because everything is food, advertised, in commercials, int he internet, on games, in my kitchen, my family and kids, across the street next door, its everywhere, the temptations are all there, its worst than drugs. And for someone that has been big since a child, and never been restricted on what I can eat because my motto was, "I am going to die anyways might as well die happy" Well, i rather die happy but not suffering restricted to a bed or not able to enjoy life. I want to be able to fit in the roller coaster so when my daughter goes in a date I can follow her and get in the same rides as her and her boyfriend. I want to be able to fit on normal clothes and spend $20 less on a shirt. I want to be able to run after my future grand kids, I want to be able to have a snore free sleep, and wake up energized, I don't want to be afraid of a stroke or diabetes. I want to keep all my limbs, I want to be able to work and make money! I want to be able to wash the dishes with less pain on my back and knees, and I want to be able to go back to being a great EMT and live a long healthy life. And more than anything I want to go to my birth country and shove it on their faces that I was able to loose weight and I ams till beautiful as I was before. So this is why I decided to do the gastric bypass. Even thou a lot of people say you can do it without the surgery, I might... but YES i am opting for the easier way, where I will have less chance of failure. Once my stomach is smaller, I will able to be full with less food thus being different from now, that I eat less but i am still hungry. And I don't care if people don't agree with me on doing this surgery, it my decision, and if I am weak for doing it, so be it. Pre-Operation: Currently I weight 280 pounds I lost 3 pounds in 2 weeks. Here are some of my current pics, They are gross, but I want you to have an idea of the real situation and have a visual concept of my progress.
