September surgery buddies!!
SpartanMaker replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a bit confused? Can you help me understand if you're concerned about your calories being too low or too high? My plan does not have any mention of calorie goals at all, at any stage, so I'm not sure what you're shooting for. -

I don't know how many of you are in your third week, but I am concerned about my calories. My doctor has us do 3 meals and 3 snacks. Shooting for 60 grams of protein and 64 oz of water. I have no problem with the protein. I make a lot of keto soups and blend them down. I am concerned in the calories. I was hovering around 5-600 calories. Today if I eat everything, I wrote I should end up around 800. I couldn't believe it. I have not had any issues with food until yesterday. I am in my soft food stage and yesterday I had a few of Russel's sugar free chocolate. My TOM started yesterday, and I think I was just craving. That did not sit well at all. So, no more off that. Where are you all at in terms of calories? -

There are lots of exercises you can do seated which wouldn’t impact the healing of your ankle. Google is your friend. Resistance bands are really useful too. Sure won’t stretch you from a cardiac perspective but will work your upper body muscles. And yes, exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight loss you have to lose. Have 50lbs to lose then exercise will be responsible for about 5lbs. Unless you start running marathons! If your calorie consumption is less than your body needs to function, you will lose weight even if it is a little slower with your reduced activity. Maybe check in with your dietician to ensure you’re on the right path. Sometimes a small tweak can be helpful. Am a little surprised you’re being advised to still be getting protein from shakes instead of real food alone this far along even if you have weight you still wants to lose.. I didn’t have another shake once I began purées. My calories were still low & I got my protein in. Even now I get in 70g of protein & consume about 1300/1400 calories a day in maintenance. Oh & I didn’t really exercise while I was losing & apart from some stretching exercises I still don’t. Wouldn’t burn 40 calories a day. Hope your ankle heals quickly & you’re up & moving easily soon. -
There are things you can depend upon. Stalls happen & you can experience several of them. Our rate of weight loss slows as we progress (as our calorie intake slowly increases & gets closer to the number of calories our body needs to function & maintain our weight). Our weight loss is never a straight downward line on a graph. It zigs & zags, up & down. And everyone’s weight fluctuates & women fluctuate more thanks to our hormones. It can be fluid, constipation, what we are, how much we drank, or just your body. Not sure how much you want to lose & what your weight currently is but it’s likely you’re in a stall. But chat with your dietician. You may need to tweak your diet or activity.

Thanks for the response and the help but I would let you know my doctor told me not to worry about the calories he told me to mainly focus on the protein the protein drink or shakes he said make sure you're fat is under 40 g and try to make sure your sugar is under 20 but at the most make sure your sugar does not go over 40 now again today but I really don't use sugar if I do use sugar if in my green tea but I use Linda and that's about it but the only reason I'm having trouble losing weight right now is because I'm down because they told me I cannot do anything below my waist down due to the fact that I fractured my foot almost a month ago and I'm still working on it getting here they only want me exercising from the upper half Jenny soderquist ( woof woof love you Kirby Liam minks) -
How do I know when I'm done?
New_me_2022 replied to Spinoza's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is a question I find myself asking more and more about also. I was sleeved this past December, so right at 9.5 months post op. I hit goal a month ago and similarly to others I'm still losing weight. It's slowed down significantly at this point but I'm on a mission to simply lose as much as possible. I'm now -17 lbs past goal.. Call it a personal mission (or mission to get my moneys worth since I paid out of pocket for my surgery lol) but I am now entering the skeletor point where I feel like I'm done. I still watch what I eat pretty closely, weight my meals, and don't eat starches or bread but I do feel I have the ability to adjust my intake and most importantly amount of activity to help burn calories and keep weight off. -
How much should I be able to eat after almost 2 years post-op VSG
ms.sss replied to Tapioca's topic in Food and Nutrition
Im 4 years post op this month and have been pretty much at this weight (+/- a few pounds) since i got into maintenance 3+ years ago. (I was 118.3 lbs this morning) I actually used to eat over 2500+ cals regularly in years 2-3 post-op but that was because I exercised a heck of alot more during that period than I do now. Im 5’2”. In your decision to decide if u want to lower calories to lose more weight, i suggest you figure out what u are willing to do to achieve that. Do you want to eat less? You mentioned you are happy at 1800 cals a day. Will you be even happier at a lower weight, but have to offset that with less cals? Will you still be able to be at peace with your life and lifestyle to achieve (and maintain) a lower body weight? If the answer is yes, then go for it! Lower your cals, increase your exercise and get to where you want to be. However, if the answer is no and you see yourself suffering angst that takes away from peaceful content living, then I say it ain’t worth it in the long run. But thats just me. Good Luck! ❤️ -

Did you gain any weight eating that many calories? Once I went from about 1,200/1,300 calories to 1,800/2,000 about 5 months ago I did start to gain some weight. Not a lot but still(7 pounds). I'm not sure if I should go back down to 1,200. I've been a lot happier at 1,800, but I also don't want to gain weight back you know. Currently I'm 5'1 131 lbs, but my lowest was 124 about 5 months ago. -

I actually use both because I like different features on them. I do think the baritastic app is easier to use and easy to track what I want to track, but I have had issues with it being way off on its information. Like I had it say a can of chicken in water was 56 grams of fat when it was like 2.5. It did get fixed about 2 weeks after I saw it but my dietitian said I was eating too much fat before surgery and I actually wasn't, it was the app being wrong and I hadn't caught it. So now I double check the stats and I also use the myfitness app as a backup to see how the 2 sites compare. So far in the 2 weeks, only 1 day was way off and that day the baritastic app said I ate 200 more calories then the fitness one. The thing I don't really like about the my fitness is that it kind of yells at me every day for not eating enough calories. -
Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Are you eating enough calories? Enough protein? I guess that would be my advice. Make sure you are getting 60-80 grams of protein everyday and making sure you are eating enough. I eat approximately 1300 calories a day and seem to still be losing a pound or two a month. -

You may be surprised. Exercise is very important for your health and helps to keep weight off but it does only contribute a small amount to weight loss from what I have been told. If you have gone a while and truly aren’t losing anything you may have to cut back on calories a bit but I would think you may just lose a little slower. I guess the best way to figure out how your body responds is just to keep logging and if you aren’t losing try cutting back 100 calories or so and see if that helps get the scale moving again. You may want to consider some seated exercises you can do for your upper body in the meantime just to keep yourself In the habit as well. -
Feeling defeated 10 months post op
armartin98 replied to ASteff's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved 12/22/2021. Since starting weight I've only lost 45 lbs. I haven't lost weight in 3 months. I get about 800-1000 calories per day, go to the gym and walk every day. I will say even though I haven't lost weight in 3 months, I feel my clothes are fitting better and I'm buying smaller sizes. I'm a little frustrated as well. I really don't know what the answer is. I just keep doing what I'm supposed to do and hope evidentially I will start loosing again. Good luck to you. -
I visit my dietician every 2 months, and this visit I lost 14lbs. In this 2-month period I had a very annoying 26-day stall. My team are always overjoyed with my progress, so I am ok with it too. I am eating 800 - 1000 cals a day. Everybody loses weight at a different rate but if we keep to a calorie deficit, then eventually we will all end where we want to. See what this month brings regarding weight loss and if you are still seeing poor results then get back to your team and get them earning their keep
-
So this month's rate of loss has significantly slowed down and I'm not sure that's due to a stall or normal. For August my loss was around 12 lbs and this month it's just 4.4. I have just entered my 6th month since surgery. I'm now yo-yoing within 2 to 4 lbs overall. Is this normal? The amount of calories I take in have increased a slight bit from around 760 to appox. 800-810. Wouldn't I still be losing weight at this point?
-
I think they would. I have to keep my protein high because of the protein absorption issue - hence the dietary change to counter the increase in calories from the increased protein. I hate protein shakes & I can taste even the flavourless protein powders making going back to a low calorie diet using shakes challenging. Plus the med is hormonal & my weight gain was always strongly linked to my hormones. I actually did reduce my calories initially to try to lose the kgs but it didn’t do anything. Sounds like what happened most of my life - ha! When I see my GP in a couple of weeks, I’m going to see if I can go back to a lower dose HRT & see if that helps. I’m actually experiencing more hot flushes & acne - boo - on the higher dose. Of course the gain could just have been my body settling again. It is only 2kg & I’ve been stable at this weight for 9 months.
-
I thought my body had settled at a weight …then I proceeded to lose another 5lbs this summer. I’m 16 months p.o. At the upper end of a healthy BMI. At the lowest weight I have ever been as an adult. With my surgeon, I had actually said I’d be happy to get to 180. As of last Monday, I was 163.6. I’m not doing anything special. To me I’m at maintenance. I have my calorie goal around 1400. But really I just focus on the protein number. I don’t restrict what I eat, but do try and make better choices. I am getting a Tummy Tuck in a few weeks. Excited for that.
-
@Arabesque please may I ask you another question? If you went back to eating 800 calories a day for a few weeks and lost those 2 kilos (not that you want to or need to!) is it your instinct that they would just bounce back on?

how did you create a goal weight?
Tomo replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My goal weights were rather simple: no longer morbidlly obese class 3, no longer obese class 2, no longer obese class 1, no longer overweight and healthy bmi. I've been kind of in maintenance mode the past few months. Still upping my calories but still losing. Tryng to find that sweet spot that is both sustainable and comfortable for my lifestyle. -

It is like clear liquid but a tiny bit thicker. I do not see it as too different. I think it will be more of a stage where it will offer the chance to consume more calories and give a bit of texture. I'm afraid it will become easier to over eat and I will have to be more mindful of calories. My food tracker will help me contain my consumption and allow me to see my numbers better. I believe it will be my first real test for my fat brain to relearn new habits and become my skinny brain. -
How much should I be able to eat after almost 2 years post-op VSG
RickM replied to Tapioca's topic in Food and Nutrition
This doc gives a rough guide as to how much volume one can consume over time - I have found it to be consistent with my experience, though my wife, who is five years or so further out than I am, generally eats less than that - she is more restricted, so there can be a lot of variation. Generally, it is good to try to not push things volumewise, as that can lead to more over eating over time - you get used to what you get used to! To some extent, your stomach will respond to how you treat it and adapt to be bigger if you consistently eat more. The other possible problem of over stuffing things is that it can promote pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter - the valve at the bottom of your esophagus that helps keep things down in your stomach and prevents reflux. So, there are some benefits to keeping meal sizes down, and if one needs more calories to maintain weight, adjust caloric density (more fats) or add another meal or snack as needed rather than eating more at a sitting. -
Weight gain going into week three
ShoppGirl replied to nymisc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are eating as you should it is humanly impossible for you to be gaining weight. As spartanmaker said It take about an extra 3500 calories just to gain ONE pound of fat. This early out you would have to eat all day on purpose to do that. Little fluctuations are common. That’s why most of our teams say to stay away from the scale. I know after sooooo many failed diet attempts it’s hard but try to trust the process. If you follow your plan it works!! -
How much should I be able to eat after almost 2 years post-op VSG
Arabesque replied to Tapioca's topic in Food and Nutrition
The scales will quickly tell you if it’s too much. I checked out recommended portion sizes of foods & recommended daily serves per day as a starting point. These are about the portion size you should be looking at. Some eat a little less, some a little more. It depends on lots of factors like age, gender, height, frame, weight, activity, etc. For example, if you are very active you likely will need to eat more across a day. The other considerations would be calories & the nutritional content of what you eat. If your meals are higher in calories you’ll likely have to cut back on the portions you eat. Generally about 4oz of meat & a cup of vegetables but it does depend upon the meat & the vegetables. But it’s all reliant on what your body needs to maintain your weight & for your body to function effectively because that’s our real goal. -

I have been doing a low carb diet except for today. I went out to dinner with some coworkers and had some sushi so the rice was bad. I have shakes but they only have 15 grams protein but the others are soooo gross I can't finish them. I have been doing atkins shakes for breakfast on the way to work and then egg muffins (eggs with spinach, mushrooms, onions, bellpeppers baked in cupcake tins) at work and then one shake with my lunch which is just a low carb tortilla with turkey meat (93/7) with some taco seasonings. For dinner more turkey. I'm just eating the same things day after day to make sure I don't mess up. It's easy to make and the prep time is short. I'm not hungry anymore. It seems like a lot of food but the calories are pretty low for each. We are almost there!!!! We got this!!! Our hard work is paying off! There might be a recipe area on this site, I'm not sure. That may help. Scared but excited.
