I am happy so far with the sleeve and I am only a month out. I originally was going for the lapband, but, at orientation they touched base on the sleeve and that peeked my interest! I researched it and decided it was right for me! I felt the gastric bypass was too extreme and I already have issues were I lack vit D, Iron etc., so I didnt think that was good for me. But with the band, way too much maintenance and my friend keeps puking with the band. So, the fact that I never got sick with the sleeve makes it the best choice for me and the fact that I dont have any hunger and my friend with the band is always starving! So, I wish I could eat alittle more, but, ,I am happy with my sleeve!

Seeking participants for University of Adelaide Bariatric Eating Experiences Study
Melissa Opozda posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Admins please delete if this type of post isn’t allowed (sorry if so!). My name is Melissa Opozda, and I’m a PhD candidate at The University of Adelaide being supervised by Professor Anna Chur-Hansen and Professor Gary Wittert. I’m also a practising psychologist, and have worked with bariatric patients before and after surgery and used to lead a banding support group in Adelaide. For my current research, I’m asking people who have had bariatric surgery to complete a single, anonymous, online questionnaire that will take around 40 minutes. You’ll be asked questions including about your surgery, your presurgery and current eating habits, eating behaviours like bingeing, grazing, and emotional eating, hunger and appetite, your health, and your experiences of eating before and after surgery. All data will be securely stored and no participant will be identifiable in any publications arising from this study. We are looking for participants who currently live in Australia, and have a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (aka ‘bypass’), adjustable gastric banding (aka ‘banding’ or ‘lap band’), and/or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (aka ‘sleeve’) that was performed in Australia, and who were 18+ years old when that surgery was performed. You need to fit all of these criteria to participate. We are looking for individuals who are back to eating solid food after surgery, and especially those who are 12+ months postsurgery. For further information and to participate, please visit: http://bariatricstudy.com. Please feel free to respond to this post, email me at melissa.opozda@adelaide.edu.au, or phone or text me on 0490 044 811 with any questions or comments. Thanks so much for your participation! Best wishes Melissa bariatricstudy.com -
Ok thank you very much. The insurance company won't give me a straight answer. My surgeon felt it would be too risky to dip below that 40 upon submission because as someone said above they may say "well you can do it on your own". I definitely have no comorbities so I think it's too risky. I'll just maintain and be fat till November or December lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Saddened today by a Death! Sudden Heart Attack~my dear friend is gone!
janetsjourneytoslim posted a blog entry in Blog 75574
:mad:Only the Lord knows why! My dear friend Rita and my daughters future mother in law died this morning from a Massive Heart Attack! My daughter who is an RN tried to revive her but could not! I am so sad and hurt this morning, I could hardly eat anything yesterday from stress and now I find it hard to drink a protein shake. When I get upset my band tightens! I don't know why but I have to be relaxed to eat. Is anyone else having this experience? Please pray for me and my family and Rita's Family today as the shock wears off and reality sets in. Rita had a gastric bypass five years ago, lost 90 lbs and felt terrific, looked terrific and enjoyed life to the fullest, we just did not get to the wedding of our children this Oct together and to see OUR grandchildren, she wanted so badly! I will miss her terribly in our lives. -
I had surgery 8/25/05. I had my first fill on 11/21/05. By end of November I was down 25# and that is where I have stayed. Through December I ate lots of sweets that went down so smoothly. I do feel I am restricted enough right now, but am not losing so I don't know. Before I get another fill I know I have to get rid of the chocolate and get up early for the treadmill every day. I am hoping that will get the pounds moving - if not, then I will get another fill. I just keep reminding myself that it is a tool - not a magic wand. Even though the first 25# felt like magic. Best of luck everyone!

Did he say what the sweets had to do with the choice? I was told with bypass you have a higher chance of dumping syndrome when you eat sweets. But it can happen with the sleeve as well. Sent from my SM-N920T using the BariatricPal App

I'm not able to have soy or dairy - so for protein powders, has anyone tried the egg white protein powders? Which ones are good?

starting pre-op liquids tomorrow, surgery oct 23rd
rachel_b posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
hey everyone, just wanted to write a little bit about what i'm about to go through and how i'm feeling. I told everyone about my surgery but my boss and co-workers, at this point i don't want any negativity so i'm still undecided on when or if i will actually tell them. I felt through this whole journey that i had alot of support but as the days near i'm starting to doubt that. My fiance was not really supportive in my decision because he has heard the horror stories and stories of people constantly being sick and throwing up and i explained how this is hopefully different from the gastric bypass and doesn't have dumping syndrome issues and since then i thought he was pretty supportive. Now, that i'm scheduled to start my full liquids tomorrow, i'm worried that he isn't going to be as supportive as i initially thought. Tonight was my "last dinner" (that sounds so silly) and he came home late after my son and i already ate, gulped his food down and then out the door to take our son to football practice. I'm sitting here so hurt.... like the last dinner i could have with my family for several weeks and it was no big deal to him that he was late.... am i over re-acting because or are these normal emotions? i just feel like now, i'm going to be alone.... help!! -
Vertical sleeve or bypass?
Bufflehead replied to veronica89's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask if your doctor can introduce you to some people who have had gastric bypass as well as some who have had the sleeve. Like, maybe a support group you can attend. Hear from real people about their own stories. Talk to your surgeon about the options, the pluses and minuses for each surgery. Personally, I think it's really important to make medical decisions on a medical basis, not "that scares me" or "that makes me feel ooky." I chose the sleeve and I think it was a good medical decision for me -- but I also know several people who have had gastric bypass and they are all doing great! No complications, they look very healthy and happy -- and slim. -
I just met with the nutritionist and ill be getting the psychological evaluation on the 30th. I'm 26 and I feel like I'm way too young and want to feel healthy again. I'm hoping ill get sleeved in November! I'm still so scared but reading everyone's journeys on here has helped me so much!!! THANKS!

I have the Lap band because, although it may require a little maintenance, you have not mutilated your stomach to a point in which it cannot be repaired. I had considered the sleeve until I read somewhere that often people that get the sleeve often end up having to go back and have the regular gastric bypass done. That is where I drew the line and I would not allow them to cut my stomach. The band has some maintenance issues but, I can eat just about all the foods I love without a violent episode (dumping) and I still feel full after a little bit of food. If something comes up I could have the band un-done with little or no trouble

Anxiety from being sick
1-4-Many replied to 1-4-Many's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LARA: I try to keep "normal" illness in mind and to be honest, I hoped it was sleeve not flu. Frankly, a sleeve round of ick seems to pass faster and since I was settled back down and holding Water and light foods by noon, I guess it was just a sleeve boo boo. But I'll tell you this. While I didn't eat anything "bad", this sure felt like dumping. Yes, I know we don't do that but it met every standard except possible massive sweating but I'm in that freezing mode. So I don't think it was anything serious. I did call my program and they said that if it doesn't last more than that few hours, it's probably not anything serious but your stomach fighting back. Bad day. But I am sure glad it timed out the way it did and I was at home for the worst. Thanks all for reading and offering comfort and clear minded thoughts. ***Oh, you know something funny....A friend who had gastric bypass suggested I go to a dollar store and buy several cheap large bowls for just such an occasion. That's a new thing to add to the household list for surgery prep because I was very happy with her that I followed through. Made it much easier.*** -
Does your stomach stretch back out or not?
Introversion replied to momto6kids's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, the tubular sleeved stomach can stretch. Yes, the stomach pouch of a gastric bypass patient can stretch. Stomachs are made up of smooth muscle, which is capable of stretching. My sleeve definitely has a greater capacity than it did during those first few post-op months. Plainly speaking, my sleeve can accommodate more food now. However, anyone who expects tight stomach restriction by itself to prevent overeating may be engaging in unrealistic thinking. At this point, the quality of food I place into my mouth is more important than the size of my sleeve. A person with a thumb-sized sleeve or golf ball-sized bypass pouch can and will regain all his/her weight if too many slider foods (e.g., chips, cookies, crackers, pretzels, ice cream, popcorn, donuts, mashed potatoes) are eaten. Slider foods do not produce a feeling of fullness or satiety. Therefore, a person who is determined to eat around the pouch or sleeve can accomplish his/her mission by overeating sliders. My personal saying is, "The road to weight regain is paved with Lays, Doritos, Ruffles, Ben & Jerry's, Fritos, Oreos, Breyers, and Chips Ahoy." It is all about choices. -
Does your stomach stretch back out or not?
BigViffer replied to momto6kids's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You'll get the same answer here as all of the other sites you have previously mentioned. Of course it can stretch. It's impossible to stretch. Blah blah blah... However I will point out that the only people I have personally worried about it stretching are the ones that do not follow the post op diet nor do they make a lifestyle change. In your opinion, what is more likely to happen: The pylorus (sleeve) or pouch opening (bypass) becoming weakened and letting more food through OR a surgically altered stomach with the stretchy (fundus) part removed being stretched out to previous volumes? If that still is not convincing enough, ask your surgeon point blank for the facts and to not use lay terms. If they say that it can be stretched, live your life with that as your motivation to eat right. -
I'm following my 2 week diet, but I am gaining?
Daenerys Targaryen replied to Iwanttofitinmyweddingdress's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It doesn't matter how well I stick to a diet or eating the way I'm supposed to post-bypass, it is a given that I am going to gain 3-5 pounds of water weight before my period. So I can totally relate, and hopefully it's just hormonal water weight for you. [emoji4] -
Is the sleeve right for me?
CowgirlJane replied to tohealth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't think any WLS eliminates cravings or some of those other things. Even gastric bypass, not everyone "dumps " and I think some that do initially don't later. No matter which procedure. ...it isn't easy for most of us. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using the BariatricPal App -
I will check out the protein drinks. I have been doing the stationary bike for a half hour. My exercising was nothing until my dr. cleared me back in November, and then the holidays came. Now I am wanting to get down to focusing on me and my lap band tool. Five day plan here I come!!!!

November 6 , 2015 sleevers

November 5th! -
To be quite honest, you can cycle through all the prescription ppis until you hopefully find something that works, but at the end of the day if nothing works and you continue to reflux the only option is to revise to Gastric Bypass. It's mess to be honest and my acid reflux is slowly going out of control si in a couple of years if none of the meds work I will need a third wls. For now if you're not on prescription meds for acid reflux get your hands on some asap.

Happy 2 month Surgiversity to us Alexander3125, Although my postoperative course is no less tortuous than my 3 weeks of seeking, I had a HWeight,of 355, today at a different surgical speciality, 281 pounds, I still, believe in my surgeon, my variety of surgery (RnY bypass) and feel once these gloomy days are, past I can still be healthier and reach my future BD, without,it I was edging too close to a mortal physical occurrence. one parent lived to 80, the other to 86, and I will meet or beat them. Outlivng,my husband who denied being obesr, refused to diet, died at 70. 👵🍶SO TODAY IS A TRIUMPH AND TOMORROW? Now,I Have a chance to Smile!😝

I had gastric bypass in 2013. It was a revision from lapband to bypass. Everything has been great as far as weight loss. I am pretty much at goal and have been for over 6 months now. But I have had issues that I question whether they are from the bypass. I never had these things before bypass. I have "low blood sugar" attacks. I call them that, and my doc's office agreed it sounds like classic low blood sugar. But what happens is, first my thinking feels a little strange, weak...then my body is weak, I feel very dizzy, I sweat - immediately am wet head to toe, have to lay down. I was told to eat Protein every 2 hours, and sometimes I do forget to eat that often...but it has happened even when I had eaten about an hour before. I eat 2 string cheese pieces and wait for this to pass. It is really scary. It has happened twice as I was driving my car. Next issue is that I have developed severe GERD. Never had it before, even with the lapband. I am on Omeprazole now. I have had bad gas lately too. I can feel it in my stomach and all thru my guts. The worst thing that happened to me, and there is no research linking this with bypass, I developed an auto immune disease 4 months after surgery. It is Alopecia Universalis. It means that your immune system attacks your hair follicles all over the body and your hair falls out all over the whole body. I am 61 years old. It is very rare for this disease to start this age. It is a genetic plus environmental trigger type of disease. But I have been reading and 80% of our immune system in in our gut. And there are people who have found "cure" for alopecia by diet change. That isn't scientific, but I really wonder...I had allergies and had a weak immune system before bypass and I really think that the bypass pushed it past the point where the alopecia could come into activity. There is no cure but there are treatments and I have shots all over my scalp every month of steroids, which fight the immune response. I now have eyelashes and eyebrows back and some head hair, although I can't go out without a wig or hat. That makes me wonder if I regret the bypass. I can't say I do. All my life my weight and my addiction to sugar have been a huge problem. As I got older it was harder to manage my weight and I am so happy to be back to my young adult weight again! Also, I do get dumping syndrome so I don't eat sweets at all. It has really helped me. Tracy

I'm 14 days post op and still have diabetes.
kelly041567 replied to kelly041567's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, my names Tina and had gastric bypass specifically to lose the diabetes and it's still there but very near normal, my glucose monitor numbers are 115-130 , my Dr. does not have me on any diabetes meds as of right now, and says as the weight comes off, the diabetes will be less and less, so I've lost 30 pounds as of this writing, and everything is looking better. SO DONT LOSE HOPE! EAT HOW AND WHAT YOUR SUPPOSE TO, Listen to your surgeon for every stage of this surgery, and stay positive about your outcome! To YOUR HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE AND NEW CHANCE❤️ Thanks Tina. My numbers are still in the 200s and I am just hoping after I lose a bunch away it'll go away permanently. Thank you so much for your encouragement! -
What Is Lap Band W/plication by ♥carolinagirl♥ Jun 21, 2012 9:43 AM I copied this for you from CG's site - I follow her posts and I also, had the lap band with plication done on January 24 - doing very well, all the best to you !! Band over Plication The gastric band and the gastric plication weight loss surgery procedures are less invasive and possibly safer than other bariatric procedures currently available. In both cases, however, there effectiveness is somewhat diminished because they are not as invasive. There is a growing consensus that by combining these two procedures bariatric surgery patients may get the best of both worlds. Each of the procedures individually may yield over 50% excess body weight loss (EBWL), however combined, there is the belief that EBWL may reach or exceed 75%, similar to that of the much more invasive gastric bypass. Original Stomach Shape and Size The procedure will begin with a gastric plication to initiate weight loss. The surgery, combined with diet and exercise, will yield excellent excess body weight loss within t... (Read More) 0 Comments

New here- looking for advice on lapband revision!
Sreeves replied to ama2414's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am a band-to-bypass revision patient. I got banded in November of 2007 and had it removed in December 2014. I was such a mess that my doctor waited 4 months to do my bypass (04.08.2015) and I am SO glad I did the revision! My surgeon said that he likes to go with bypass for previously banded patients because of the trauma caused by banding. With the sleeve the new stomach is banana-shaped whereas with bypass a brand new pouch is created out of healthy tissue. It is incredible what a difference bypass is from banding. I was sick pretty much the entire time I was banded and I never could eat properly. Now I have what I was hoping the band was going to do for me; a tool that I am using to help me redesign my eating habits and live a healthy lifestyle! Of course ultimately the decision is up to you but I can tell you I am 100% happy with my progress so far. I actually feel like I can do things right this time!
