VSG surgery was on 4 January and I am very happy with the progress. I am just on 30kgs down and within a very healthy BMI. My clothes fit well, but my skin is pretty nasty saggy - a small price to pay for health and wellbeing. My hair has finally stopped shedding at a great rate of knots, pardon the pun, and I've just had my first haircut by a lovely lady who has had a bypass. She really understood my concerns and assured me she can see good healthy growth coming through now.
It's coming out of winter down here in Australia and I'm looking forward to not being as hot and sweaty as usual this summer, and being able to wear a bathing suit at the beach without feeling embarrassed.
Onwards and upwards 🙂

Recommendations for Hair Growth Supplements?
ShoppGirl replied to mgigi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Collagen Peptides are supposed to be good for hair nails and skin. I took them mostly trying to help with skin elasticity but I did notice it helped my nails and I haven’t yet noticed any hair loss at almost six months out. I was recently told we do not absorb the protein as well as whey protein though so if want to count it towards that goal you should ask your team how much of it actually absorbs. -
Interested in sleeve but dr suggests mini bypass

Some sleevers need vitamins long-term and some don't. I'm one of those that do, in fact I had a B12 scare recently. Somehow my B12 got low and I got the whole list of nasty symptoms (minus pale skin, for obvious reasons, LOL): Weakness, tiredness, or lightheadedness Heart palpitations and shortness of breath Pale skin A smooth, sore tongue Constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or gas Nerve problems like numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and problems walking Vision loss Mental problems like depression, memory loss, or behavioral changes What caused me to know something was seriously wrong was the "problems walking" part. I fell three times in 10 days and it hit me that's not normal. I had to increase the dose of B12 I am taking and I'm still not free from all the symptoms, although I'm better. So it's a roll of the dice - you could be off supplemental vitamins relatively early or you could need them longer. -
What are you looking forward to ?

collagen peptide unflavored powder helps with nails, skin, and hair (hair loss is a huge issue with WLS patients) so many people take it to reduce hair loss. It also has 10g of protein! you can mix it into your protein shakes as it's flavorless! I recommend it! https://www.amazon.com/Collagen-Peptides-Grass-Fed-Certified-Friendly/dp/B00XQ2XGAA I use this one with my coffee, shakes, etc. -
If you are talking about the excess skin the best way is abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a tummy tuck! I did it and am glad I did.

I am close to you in age- I am 49. I also think I look a lot better with clothing ON than OFF right now so pictures can be deceiving. There is much to be said for a good pair of leggings and a good bra! My stomach, butt, triceps and inner thighs are my current problem areas. They have some loose skin but I accept it is part of the process. I think my Biceps actually look the best , I think they respond well to working out. I am taking a collagen supplement daily - in hopes that it will help maintain some elasticity with my skin. I have noticed my complexion is a lot better since adding the collagen. Hard to say if it is helping with elasticity since I had to take a month off from the gym since my gall bladder surgery. As my weight loss slows down now, I am going to get back to the gym this weekend and really going to focus on workouts with the goal of tightening up/toning as much as possible. Starting to research body recomposition - building muscle and losing more fat. This will also help with increasing BMR for maintenance. I am going to continue to reassess things as time goes by. I always thought I would never want plastic surgery but I may change my mind and get the Mommy makeover in a year or 2. My boobs are flat and saggy now and they are the only part of my body I am unhappy with right now. My stomach has some loose skin but it still feels better than it did at 264 lbs. From what I understand genetics, age and prior weight all play into loose skin. I am working on giving myself grace and accepting my imperfections and working to continue to improve as much as I can. Advice Welcome....

We’ll done!!! My SW and GW numbers are almost identical to yours. I’m 5’4” and 54 years old. I’m impressed at how fit and toned your body is, and I am hopeful that I might not have any issues with extra skin. Did you do anything special—apart from exercising, weights, and so on—to ward off problems with extra skin? My biceps are a concern for me. I would really like to avoid cosmetic surgery to remove extra skin. I appreciate any guidance you might be able to offer me. And again, congratulations on your great success!

Collagen Peptides are great for skin and some take it in hopes it will help decrease excess skin. The only problem is that post surgery it may be a less absorbable form of protein for us than whey protein I assume you can still use it you may just have to consume a bit more than what the package says to actually absorb what you need. I would ask your team. -
I fortunately just missed the 400 club, but am 6' 3" with a HW of 382 on 7/3/19, but thought I would "weigh in" on this topic. SW 309 5/18/20 for VSG CW 216 15 months after surgery. I hit my goal weight of 220 about 7 months post op and have maintained in a ~10lb range (213-222). Taking in about 2000 calories daily and doing well. When I start creeping up, I lower to 1800 or so until I get back down. Working so far, still tracking every day, hydrating, exercising, focus on my macros. I've scheduled a tummy tuck in late September to deal with the loose skin. Excited, but nervous about that.

Hey I had my surgery a month ago too, and lost 6kg (11 lbs) the 3 first weeks. Now I am stalled since 2 weeks. I fell you, but in your case you may try to get more liquid protein. Do not be discouraged, we'll loose this dawn weight even slowly we'll get there Sent from my SM-G973W using BariatricPal mobile app -
Plastic Surgery Scars one year later!
Lynnlovesthebeach posted a topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I know some people say they are afraid to have plastic surgery because of the scars they will have afterwards. Well, I know everyone doesn't scar the same way but I think mine are pretty typical. I would rather have this scar all the way around my body than the rolls of loose skin I had before it was removed. I took these this morning when I realized yesterday was my one yr plastic surgery anniversary for my lower body lift and brachioplasty. These pictures are my hips and the scars are easily covered by underwear or bathing suit. -
I’m actually shocked by how little loose skin bothers me. I’ve gone from 339-180, and I’m still planning on losing 15 more pounds. I have some loose skin on my upper arms, and some on my abdomen, but overall it just doesn’t look bad in my opinion. Will I be wearing a skimpy bikini around? No but I’m not the kind of person who would do that regardless. I wear regular clothes and it has not bothered me. I may consider skin removal on my upper arms but overall it’s just not these huge hanging piles of skin I had pictured. Think of it this way. The skin is there right now. You already have all the skin you’re worried about on your body today. Do you want that skin filled with fat? I didn’t!

Any 45+ year old women on here with gastric bypass experience?
WendyO replied to timmytommy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Well I just found out about this forum so I saw this post and wanted to reply as I am older than a lot of people who have this surgery. Let me tell you that age is just a number. You can be young, have this surgery and be less successful then someone older. I think it depends on the individual. I was not overweight as a kid, and I weighed about 100lbs in high school. I started putting on the weight with each pregnancy and it got harder and harder to loose it as the years went by. Bad eating habits of course played a role, as well as genetics. My body killed my thyroid when I was pregnant with my son, and it just got harder after that to get the weight off. When menopause hit, I really started to gain. I had RNY surgery in Oct/2020 at age 61. I had high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea, sore hips, knees ankles, and feeling short of breath from just vacuuming so you get the picture. Could not walk 5 feet without having to sit down. Crazy awful. (I have asthma too) I have hypothyroidism, IBS, and was also border line diabetic. Yep...time to smarten up and take control of my health. I am 62 years old now and at 10 months post op. Best decision I have ever made and I wish I had done it years ago. I talked myself out of it every time, telling myself I can loose this on my own. Who was I kidding. LOL It was hard at first and I was not prepared for the mental side of it. I sat and cried the second day home from hospital as my brain was screaming at me, scolding me for what I had done. It wanted food, and I felt a lot of depression and remorse. I was not expecting that. It got better as time went on and as the weight started to drop, I felt much more in control, and very happy to see it go. Time to take care of me. I have hit a stall and have not lost any weight in 2 months, but I know this is normal and I am trying not to panic. I expected it would be more challenging to loose this weight because of my age. I do not exercise, but plan to start in the fall, I still have about 60lbs or more to go to reach my goal weight. No going back to my old habits, and If I do, I have this tool in place to help me. Any questions? just ask me. I am happy to share my experiences and happy to hear everyone's stories as well. BTW, You should check out Dr. Weiner's YouTube videos. He is a bariatric surgeon and has good sold advice on this whole process. -
Post Op Autologous augmentation breast lift
Lynnlovesthebeach posted a topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I really haven't posted any pictures here before but thought I'd share these. Last year I had 360 lower body lift, abdominoplasty and arm lift. Nine days ago, Aug 16, I had a "dermal suspension, parenchymal reshaping, auto autologous" breast lift, and upper body lift (back). I took these pictures this morning. This is me with no implants. Basically, they just use your own tissue to create new boobs. Docs who specialize in body contouring after massive weight loss often use this method when you don't have enough elasticity in you skin to support implants long term. They use the "side boob" tissue, upper abd tissue and the sagging part of your own boob to create new boobs. It's a more involved surgery ( took 4 hrs to do) and has longer incisions but I was fine with that. He told me I would look like I have implants without having implants! And, they won't sag because they are anchored to my ribs! Also, if you look closely on my right arm you can see the tiny scar from my arm lift, exactly one year ago today. -
I don't know about the sweating part, its probably from weight loss but the no shave part is definitely from my arm lift! I actually love that part. I just had a breast lift last Monday and 2 ugly biopsy scars on my left breast are now gone. It's amazing how they can move skin and tissue around!

It’s caused by the loose skin in your armpits which folds in over your actual pits. Your beauty therapist would stretch & pull the loose skin out of the way when they wax but it’s nigh on impossible for you to do it yourself - one arm in the air the other holding the razor. Try stretching your arm back as far as you can while pushing your pit area (& breast) forward to stretch the skin more. Or use you upper arm to try to pull the loose skin out of the way.

Second Guessing Myself
vikingbeast replied to greenwitch17's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still three weeks pre-op but I felt every word of your post in my bones. And all I will say is that, now that I've committed to do this for myself, I wish I'd had the courage to do it 15 years ago. Too young? No such thing. They do it for teenagers. And if you're young, your skin is more elastic which could mean less issues with loose skin. -
Loose skin in 30s
lizonaplane replied to Ms_RBell08's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my 30s I lost 100 lbs and I didn't notice any loose skin, but I was still overweight at my lowest and started regaining pretty soon, so I don't know if I would have had loose skin if I had gotten down lower. I'm 41 now, so I don't know if I'll have loose skin or how much I'll lose after sleeve. -
One of the benefits to arm lift surgery-I don't have to shave anymore. That skin was removed! I also don't sweat in my armpits anymore!
-
I am 42 and have lost 50 pounds and do not seem to have any loose skin so far. I have 25 more pounds to goal though so idk if it happens more at the end of weight loss or if you can tell while still losing.

Checking in Surgery Status: ~4 weeks Post Op VSG (July 27th) Phase: week 2 soft food (tomorrow I am able to start regular food) Highest known weight: 241 Surgery weight: 229 Current Weight: 211 NSV: Some of my office slacks are fitting better, and even a bit too loose in some areas. I can also see a big difference in my face, especially when comparing photos side by side. I have been stalled on 96kg / 211lbs for almost a week now, but I am not too bothered since I fully expected this based on others' experiences. The hardest part for me has been the morning nausea and some lightheadedness. Otherwise, I keep on keeping on. -
At 36 you might not have too much of a problem with loose skin over the long term, but even if you do, you can hide it with shapewear or remove it with surgery. Don’t let the fear of loose skin dissuade you.
-
it varies a lot - depending on your age, how overweight you were, how long you were overweight, for example. You have your age going for you, so like Lynnlovesthebeach said, it probably won't be as bad as it is for someone in their 60s. I had surgery in my late 50s and lost over 200 lbs. I had tons of loose skin (which has since been removed), but even before it was removed, it was easy to hide in clothes. I was the only one who knew it was there (well, and my husband and doctor, of course). Here is a picture of me BEFORE I had it removed. As you can see, it was very easy to hide. You'd never know that I looked like a Sharpei puppy under those clothes - but I did!

Sounds like the glue came loose. Happened to my big incision shortly after surgery.
