Yesterday- I hesitate to share much about my kids here, except the good stuff. So lest you think I have the “Leave it to Beaver” family, you can be assured I don’t. We all have our issues don’t we? With 3 kids between 13 and 21, let’s just say we’re majorly going through those “teenage funk” years. My middle one, DS, is 18 and has been in that distant teenage funk for awhile now. When he's not working or doing homework, he can usually be found in the basement- his cave of video games from which he rarely emerges (except under protests from Mom)...He's turning into one of those cave fish...pale skin and I swear his eyes are bulging from sitting in the dark playing video games. Some days I curse the person who invented them and wish they'd spend eternity in video game hell...yep, I'd tape that guys eyes open and make him watch that first video game for eternity...what was it? Oh yeah...PONG...even better (think about it)! This weekend he brought up a board game from the basement for us all to play and I about fell out of my shoes...DH and I looked at each other in disbelief…WHO IS THIS CHILD??!!…Can I keep him…no, really…I’m NOT giving him back! I'm calling it my Christmas miracle!

Dropping weight, where from? Do I need to work out more?
AirKuhl replied to als74's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Unfortunately the skin on your upper arms doesn't shrink well, especially for women. Your option is to fill "the bags" with some muscle. There are many different machines in the gym that work out your triceps and biceps. Push-ups at home work too. There is always surgery as well, IMO a last resort. -
Why Did You Choose The Sleeve Over The Others?
MinaT replied to Amie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With the lap band there could be issues with slippage. I have had several surgeries in the past, hysterectomy, c-section, laparascopies, and I have issues with adhesions. There are many people that need surgeries to get the lap band off and then end up getting the sleeve. I myself had a heart monitor and it was just under the skin and it always bugged me. With the lap band, you have a port right under the skin. I would hate to have to have fluid inserted or taken out, that sounds painful to me. I also have Lupus and my surgeon will not give me lap band with lupus. With Gastric Bypass, since I have had several issues in the past, including a bowel resection due to having adhesions that wrapped around my intestines and caused sepsis, I do not want any more of my intestines compromised. I have had diverticulitis and polyps in the past too. I heard about dumping and hair loss and nutrition issues with Gastric Bypass and that seems too difficult to me. The sleeve allows for normal digestion of the food and seems all around safer for me than any other surgery. -
Why Did You Choose The Sleeve Over The Others?
4ALongerLife replied to Amie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I DID regret it for a minute. I told my husband, at my worst, please take me home and leave me in a field to die. Ok that's a bit meladramatic right? I was really at my wits end (durn hospital wanted to put me in a nursing home for a half a second grrrr). But yes Artsy, I had a second surgery on 3/20 to restitch my pouch as a staple came loose due to my stomach skin not liking the staple in that place (essentially). (side note, where you been artsy???) I'm watching my progression back through the foods - I'm on a soft diet right now. Last week I did pureed and I was having some feelings that weren't good in my tummy whenever I would eat. Best description that I can give you is that it felt like my tummy was a wash rag being rung out whenever I would eat. The good news? I don't feel that way this week. Mind you, I've been eating a lot of cioppino Soup from whole foods (it's supposed to be fullll of Protein and lowfat as it's tomato based, also is very tasty/full of flavor) and alot of other soft foods still ... but I had chicken breast (about 3 oz) at lunch for my second time in the last few days and no issues. So whomever prayed and got it to God, thank you. My tummy's making some weird sounds and it worries me, but I've decided I'm just going to use my energy to remain positive instead of worrying. Sorry that was longer than intended btw, brittcherry, you are doing wonderfully! congrats, you loser! -
Imt33167 .. I was on the Phentermine for almost 8 months; it's true about the jittery feelings, and the heart racing ... all in all it wasn't a pleasant experience. Yes, I did loose weight, about 100 lbs all total on the (while on the fast, and taking the drug combo Phen-fen); but when I got off the medication, as well as the fast, it all came back with a vengance; I gained back the 100 I had lost and additional 50. Just don't do it ... if you're thinking about the pre-weight loss for the Lap-Band, there must be a safer way to do; trust me, this isn't it! The "sick" feeling you get when you're taking the medication just isn't worth it.

Who Wants To Share Some Recent NSVs??
Grandma26 replied to Catherine55's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sunday I walked 3 miles!! My DH and I used to walk all the time but as I got bigger and bigger I could no longer do it. I had a hard time walking from the house to my car without loosing my breath or gasping for air. This time I was not even winded at all! -
Good for you Zephorah, you are on the loosing track again. You took the biggest step of going back to the surgeon for help! Now, that your life is back in order, getting back to your winning ways will work for you, too! Best wishes, Karen

My friend has the same problem, only hers is stress induced. She uses a product called H2Ocean, it is canned sea water that has been purified. SHe swears by it. The only place we can get it here is tattoo shops and Hot Topic, it is sold for aftercare for body piercing, but works great for skin problems. Hope this helps. ~Mandy

I hit my 3rd week and the stall too it's been almost three weeks on exactly the same weight not loosing or gaining any pound, but they said sometimes is normal and is only the first one of many more to come! Good luck

Diva, that's not a weird question at all! I wish I'd have asked it. My tube just floated around like Major Tom, which was part of the reason my port incision never healed (because the port & tube were too near the surface of the skin.) Since my drama, which eventually led to erosion, I've heard surgeons say that they now put the port deeper into the tissue. Heck, maybe my surgeon was supposed to stitch my port down, but mine was just a floatie.

Anyone have or had Acanthosis nigricans? That's the technical name for the dark velvety patches/areas of skin you can get when you have insulin problems and/or are overweight. My biggest problem area is in a line on the back of my neck and it looks like my neck is dirty all the time. Unfortunately you can't just wash it away though....I am really hoping this issue is reversible.....anyone know?

Sorry you have to go through that hun but I know that pain all too well. I over did it in my first few weeks physically and ended up tearing my incision on the inside. I now have scar tissue that makes it difficult to hit my port and actually tilts it. Usually takes about 17 pokes and a fluoroscopy for me to get a fill. Luckily as I loose weight in my stomach my port will be more accessible. Im not sure how your weight is distributed but if you have a lot in your abdominal area it can be difficult to find the port for a while. Rest assured that it will change as you lose. The other possibility is that your nurse isn't that experienced and you may want to ask for a different one next time you go just to be sure. Good luck!

Why does the weight loss slow down!
sexxy219 replied to sexxy219's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
sexxy219 awwwwww.......... chin up hun you are doing fine congrats on your 3 month weight loss!!!! 71 lbs down so far is great' date=' really!!!!! loosing 10 lbs in a month??? no prob here wish you had a ticker and a profile (hint, hint )so i could see how much more weight you need to lose if you don't have much more to lose you might slow down a bit with your loss - but thats ok kicking up the energy a bit, exercising more is always good - but i wouldn't kick up the lbs some people do that if they have been in a long stall - to "wake" up their system but your system might be "resting" a bit - don't startle it now!!! you'll reach your destination - promise!!! GOD grant me patience, just hurry up about it [/quote'] Yea I just pray I do not have a long stall!!! I'm not gonna claim it!!! I think my body is just adjusting. -
Wow ladies, I'm impressed! I was hoping you might be able to help me out with an exercise/calorie question. I am just at the beginning of my research on lapband and the sleeve and will be going to the dr. in January. Although I have lots of weight to loose, I am dying to get back into shape where I can run and do bootcamp classes again. My question/concern is can you still maintain the amount of energy needed to workout intensely with such small calorie intakes? My previous trainer had me down to 1800 a day but I can't imagine working out like that with less calories. I would love any information you can give me from your personal experiences and knowledge that might help me to think through this particular concern. Thanks so much and keep up all of the great work!

Did not realize bowel prep would be so rough..
Caliblonde replied to mamamckinzie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
HAHAHAHA! Wow, thanks for the awesome laugh! I had to do a bowel prep, 3 tablespoons of milk of magnesia the day before surgery. It wasn't too bad, since I was on all liquids there wasn't much there to begin with. After surgery they gave me something to "get things moving"....oh my god did it ever!!!!!! It was horrible and it kept going for days after I got home too. The gave me some stuff in the hospital to help with cleaning and protecting my very sore bum - the products are: 3M Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream and Cavilon No-Rinse Skin Cleanser. Both were incredibly helpful for me. -
We all failed losing weight with the traditional methods or we wouldn't have 80% of our stomachs removed. After failing enough times to consider this surgery, we all have that little voice in the back of our heads wondering if we are going to fail again---and if we do, what does that say about us??? While we all have that voice to one degree or another, it really isn't a rational fear. The surgery works--not by itself though. You will have to diet and exercise after the surgery per your surgeon's instructions. If you commit to following those instructions to the letter, you will succeed and lose that excess weight. It's not a question of if, only a question of when. Some people may be slow losers, but they are still LOSERS (in the best sense of that word!). I am now 7 weeks out from surgery and I have already lost 66% of my excess body weight (some of that was from the pre-surgery and pre-op diet, but I lost it all because of the program I am on). I have lost 34 pounds since surgery (54 pounds overall). I have another 30 pounds to go to get to my goal, but I am already a success in my view. I am finally off all of my T2DM medications and I feel great!!! I had a 48.5" inch natural waist to 40" natural waist ( the equates to going from pants that were a size 44 pants to a loose 36" (not quite ready for 34" pants, but I can actually put them on and get them buttoned!!!). I haven't been this thin in over 15 years and I am easily 17 pounds lower than my lowest weight on my strictest pre-WLS diet. I attribute half of this loss to the surgery and the other half to my diet and exercise. I am 100% committed to making this work for the long term and you have to believe you will feel this way too. Losing weight is never easy, nor is having this surgery. However, the challenges of surgery and weight loss are nothing compared to the challenges of being obese and, in my case, suffering from virtually of the co-morbidities that came with it. This is the first time in my life I am actually looking forward to seeing my cardiologist in March and not having him discuss my need to lose weight (at least not in that "oh, not that again!" sort of way. In short, you're going to be just fine!!!

So back in July I got sick put on about 50 pounds in 12 days. They took everything out of my band since then I put on another 30 pounds so in total 80 pounds. I had lost 210 pounds. I am starting to get fluid back in my band but this time the weight doesn't seem to be coming off like it did when I first had the surgery I was going down 15 pounds a month but right now I am not loosing anything! Any suggestions on what I could do?

Am I the only non-losing loser? I am almost 6 weeks out with no fill. I only had some restriction for 2-3 days after surgery! I have been on my own, since that. I lost 5 lbs on the post fluid diet and have been teetering up and down that 5 lbs since. I see people loosing left and right, but no body with the minimal 5lb loss. I feel like a complete loser and one who will never be able to lose weight even after being banded. I am not sure if its because of my lower starting bmi (35) or no fills? I am starving and will get a fill next monday, my dr wont fill more often than every 6 weeks, to prevent slipping. Has anyone ever experienced this? Please share your inspirational stories if so. Thanks

You write so eloquently. So Sorry about this ordeal. Hope it’s. Smooth loosing for you from here!

I can't address your skin coming off, but I highly recommend that if you aren't prone to depression, you talk to your doctor about Accutane. I spent two years doing antibiotics and topicals, until we finally went to Accutane. It cleared up my rosacea in the first month, but I stayed on it for 6 months, and I've been rosacea free for over 5 years.

Hi keep it real if that was the case the world would be sleeved. Lol You will loose alot in the beginning then something funny happens you start to heal which means you can eat more thats where the fun starts you are going to have t start making smart choices and picking your own battles its not a cure all or a quick fix its a tool and your gonna have to learn how to work it.

I don't know I just don't really understand where it goes. How can the band size change as we loose. It is a hard object right? Only the inside of the band is expandable right? Unless it evaporates or we stretch it out, it doesn't make sense to me. Somebody knock me in the head because I just don't get it. Right now I know how much I can eat. I just don't see how without taking some fluid out how my restriction would change over a period of time. Clueless here!!!!!!!!!!!

Does Our Age Make A Difference?
Mandylove replied to whitneyrenees's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm am also in my 20's and am looking to get banded in September. When I spoke with my doctor they said the their younger patients have some of the best results! One of my good friends who was banded a few years ago at age 20 lost 85 lbs without much, if any, working out! Also, like those above, I have been told that your skin is much more likely to go right back. I'd love to talk to you further, i've been looking for someone to share in my journey with who understand what its like.
