Crazy Hair Loss! HELP!
shelly77 replied to Nurse Claudia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved July 2012, and I've lost well over half of my hair. I have an appt with a dermatologist Friday bc my nurse practitioner was so concerned about it not slowing down and the amount I've already lost. We know it's normal, but she didn't want to assume its from the surgery and it be more serious for me. I'm getting all my protein, taking all my vitamins including biotin and hair & nails vitamin, using special shampoos & hair protein treatments. I, too, am very concerned about it. I find my hair everywhere!!!! Good luck to you!! -
It's difficult bc you know you will be judged. You know others might have nasty thing to say. I was ok with that. I chose to tell people. My family, friends, and coworkers (who are great friends as well). I expected negative feedback, but I have gotten much more positive. Here were my reasons for sharing: 1) hiding it is more difficult-- people are going to know. And I feel like they are more judgmental if you hide it as if you're embarrassed by it. It's like when you point out a flaw, then no one will talk about it. ex: hey, I have a big zit on my face.. Then no will feel the need to talk about the big zit behind your back. 2) my mentors were not quiet about it-- the ones who have been through this, educated me, encouraged me were not secretive, and I'm very thankful for that. Had they not been an open book, I may not have had the tools to become a success story. I'm not loud about it. I don't preach about it. But I have had ppl interested about wls. If I need to be a mentor for someone else, I think I owe it. 3) I wanted to be held accountable-- especially at work. If I'm at work and about to bite into a pizza, I want someone to be like, "umm, are you supposed to be eating that??" Or with friends if I'm about to eat something that isn't good for me, I WANT the nasty judgemental face. I respect people's reasons for not sharing, but I felt it was best for me.

return to work
NurseShay replied to karmaandkismet's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Haha @ Manda... I was a CNA for 4yrs and have been a nurse for 2 so I know exactly how you feel but believe me nurses in SNF have a lot of work to do that may not be evident to you! Snf's are endless paperwork! Karma&kismat its doubtful you do 12's in a SNF so if you're working a hospital the physical work is likely to be more & I don't think you'd want to go back to work beforee a week off. But I also don't think laprascopic surgeries really require 3 or 4 wks either its a minimally invasive procedure. If it required 3wks of bed rest it probably wouldn't be out patient right? First take the recommendation of your surgeon/doctor. Then decide if you have a low or high tolerence for pain bc that'll help determine when you'll be off the narcs & can even think of going back to work light duty or at all. If you're a charge nurse & sit doing a lot of paperwork rather than bedside you'd probably be ok after a week otherwise give it 2 weeks. And if you have hernia repair expect a little more downtime to heal. I personally work subacute unit & I was back to work in 1 week working 10's. By the 2nd week post op I had very little discomfort due to the gas & virtually no pain. -
I'm SO PISSED OFF!!!
eenerms replied to singledad167's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is illegal to tell anyone about any medical procedures without the permission of the patient.(IANAL) The Feds take this very seriously. You really should lodge a complaint to the office manager/doctor they want to protect themselves as well as you when it comes to a chatty employee. -
Should I Get Surgery?
vssupermodel replied to ComputerKing's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I recommend getting it done in Mexico. I will be doing mine here because I am mexican (duh! ) but yes a lot of doctors are really nice and VERY experienced. I would also suggest not gaining that much weight because I actually did it and it is a little dumb because I feel so uncomfortable and my surgery is not until a few months from now. Get my point? I have to look heavier for the whole summer and nothing fits, I have to walk around with pants bc of that. The only upside is that I will get the surgery this year and everything will change soon, but I feel so uncomfortable right now. I strongly suggest not doing what I did and just find a doc that will do it with the weight you have. good luck! If you need advice for Mexico let me know! -

Horizon BCBS of NJ nutritionist and physiological part before getting the lap band
Tracyde730 replied to Raf's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have Horizon BC/BS of NJ. I'm getting banded on 8/1 by Dr. Ewing from Hackensack Hospital. LOVE HIM!!! I used the Nutritionist they recommended (much easier that way) and she cost $100. I went for a Psych eval from a Psychiatrist and that cost $30.60 (after being submitted to ins). The surgery will be fully covered once it's approved, which hopefully be in the next few weeks. Please look into Lap-Band Associates in Hackensack, NJ. They are wonderful! They are a practice with 3 great doctors. Let me know how you make out!! Good luck! -
Non Supportive Primary Care Doctor
Spatters3 replied to carlab51's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My PCP had suggested WLS several times over the past few years but never pressured me and was always supportive with whatever I wanted to try next. My insurance (Anthem BC/BS) doesn't cover anything "weight loss" unless I am actually enrolled in an approved weight loss center's program. So, he would write other things on the chart when I was primarily there to talk to him about weight loss. Stupid system. He recently saved my life because I offhandedly mentioned to him that I was spotting (I'm post menopausal) - ordered an ultrasound and then called me himself with the results and made the appointment with the gynecologist. Turned out I had uterine carcinosarcoma ("unique, rare, and extremely aggressive cancer"). It was all contained within the uterus and appears to have been all summarily removed I have always used doctors as tools to get medication or procedures done that I thought I needed. With all that has happened recently I am rethinking our relationship - it should be a partnership whose goal is my good health. If your PCP isn't your partner, find one who can be. -
Everyone is different, but there is a common thread that a lot of us have issues with hormonal BC post op. I don't really know what it is that causes it but you see a lot of complaints. Maybe it's that we're already hormonal post op because of the fat cells that store hormones being burned off. Who knows? You'll just have to find what works for you. If you go IUD do your research. I loved some parts of having Mirena (hormonal IUD) but I could not lose weight on it and it increased my hair loss. I have heard good things about Paraguard (non-hormonal IUD) but for me it wasn't an option, as I needed a hormone to control endometriosis. I had almost no periods on my IUD - very little spotting for a while and then nothing, though, so if that's what you want it might be the option for you. ~Cheri

You will probably need a sleep study, EGD, and psych appt for sure as well as medically supervised weight loss classes. But I know my doctor said that some preoperative appts had to be within 6 mos or 3 mos of surgery date. So wait on psych evaluation. But get a sleep study scheduled asap bc this takes the longest.

@@Cervidae - I've been tested up and down, left and right for PCOS! I had an ultrasound to check out my ovaries but there weren't any cysts. I had my blood tested to check for PCOS and it came back negative. All my doctors assumed I had PCOS because I have all the classic symptoms but nope, I'm good in that regard lol... @@Sajijoma - Wow, sounds like you got the short end of the stick Sorry you go through that. My periods aren't super heavy, but they are very painful and fraught with symptoms. I don't know 100% if I'm done having kids... the deal is I agreed to carry one baby and my partner is carrying the other (I'm a lady married to a lady). If for some reason she's incapable of getting pregnant I need to keep my oven fresh in case I have to bake another bun. I'm HOPING I'm done but I can't say for sure that I am. I didn't know you could get your uterine lining removed. I'll probably do that after baby number 2 is born since we don't want more than 2 kids (if we can help it - there's always the risk of multiples when you use artificial insemination with fertility drugs). I also don't want to remove all the parts because of the hormones. My mom had a full hysterectomy when she was 39 because her period pain was unbearable (must be hereditary because I'm the same way). But her hormones were all out of whack because she lost her ovaries. I don't know if I want to rid myself of the organs but it sure would be nice to kill my period forever! Will probably research BC pills to find something that works for me.

Not a kilo lost through Gastric Sleeve :(
sarhgrif replied to Saddy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I opted for bypass bc I knew sweets were my biggest problem, I was really hoping for bad dumping even if I touched a sweet. I wasn’t lucky to get that but still at this point it’s better than craving sweets. I literally might only mentally crave a sweet maybe once a week. I take one maybe two bites and I’m finished. I needing help detoxing from sugar. It’s extremely addictive. But I’m hoping even if I’m the future I’m able to eat it more that I’m so used to not eating it now that I will find it satisfying after a couple of bites or perhaps a serving rather than a whole box!!! Haha. Don’t let yourself get back into the habit though. I’m sure you could push through and then get hooked back on it. No regrets at all only wish I would have done it sooner! Good luck. I am just starting my 3 month diet before I am banded. I have been dreaming about how it will feel when I get to my goal weight. One of the things I hate about being big is the heat! I sweat all the dang time. Its actually embarrasing sometimes bc everyone else is comfortable and I am sweating. For those of you who have lost weight, do you feel cooler?

I believe bc of my weight I don't get my periods have not had one since April and that was on the 10 day pills to make me have one. I am sure after I lose weight it will come back and I'm sure that day will look like a shark took a bite out of me haha... But Im sure it's normal bc the fact our body is going through changes Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
There will be loose skin bc of how rapid the weight loss is. Start exercising and weight training as soon as you get cleared to. Also, lotion lotion lotion. Keep your skin moisturized. Other than that the rest is genetics...some people have great elasticity and others not. My skin is loose but I didn’t weight train right away...wish I did. I am now. I’m 44 as well. But ill take the loose skin over how big I got any day!!

Worried I’m making a wrong choice
Erica_B replied to bthompson82's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Stay the course! There is a misconception that having weight loss surgery is somehow the 'easy' way out. I call BS! My husband initially was not supportive when I broached the topic years ago, but after learning more about the process and the health benefits, he was on board, not because the thought of surgery didn't still trouble him, but because he wanted me to be healthy, and happy. I was diagnosed in 2017 with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and have been in remission for over two years now. Though my oncologist could not tell me exactly how I came to have Lymphoma, there were many possible causal factors, one of which? You guessed it, obesity. I knew I needed to act, and after all we'd been through my hubby was all in to make sure my remission continued. I can only speak for myself when I say that the sleeve surgery was one of the best decisions I have ever made for me, physically and emotionally. I have never been happier. Do whatever it takes to get YOU to healthy and happy. -
Totally ketosis. I had the same thing and it’s totally common, especially the first 6 weeks after surgery. It was so bad at one point that when my husband and I were just talking, he stopped for a second and asked if the cat or dog had an accident. Nope, no animals pooped in the house, it was my breath. That was an awesome moment bc I was totally paranoid after that. Strong, sugar free mints were my constant companion. Sleeved 8/7/17 HW: 256 SW: 248 CW: 197 on 1/3/18 5'7" GW: 150

Hi!! I have the EXACT same situation going on! I have BCBS FEd and scince my bmi is less than 40 i have to do a 3 month supervised diet. Looking for a surgery buddy;

That’s what I’m trying to stay away from is the opinionated comments. To many times people jump to conclusions before educating themselves and assume things that aren’t true. I know people talk and it could possibly get out their but for now that is only my immediate family I’ve got 3 people to point a finger at if it gets out. Those 3 people also see how hard I’m working on this also and what I’m sacrificing and what their sacrificing by me being the main cook in the family, so they best be sweet and never criticize their “Momma” if they plan on getting fed. Lol -
I just got approved from BC for a revision from sleeve to Rny
