    Creature of Habit

Having recently had biopsies in my breasts and they tried to use bandages to create compression I am very aware of just how much our boobs juggle when we walk so I totally get why this could create an issue in your situation. You do not want to have to pay for a revision surgery so just do what your told. If your like I was with my implants, you will want to take them girls out for a stroll just as soon and as often as you can once your cleared to do so safely so I am not worried that your going to fall back into old habits. Give yourself a little leniency for the short time it takes to get back to your routine. I’m certain that your new look will be all the motivation you need to get back out the door and right back on track.

    Supplements??

Gastric bypass patients should be taking at a minimum a bariatric multivitamin, as well as 1200-1500 mg of calcium per day. Vitamin D3 is also recommended, but most people get enough with just the above because typically both bariatric multivitamins and calcium supplements already contain additional D3. Some people also need B12 supplementation, however since I eat a lot of dairy, I've never had a problem with my B12 being low. Keep in mind that due to the surgery, we don't absorb nutrients like the did before. This is why we need to take these supplements for life. It's critical to have routine blood work and adjust what you take due to the results. For example, I had to change from a "normal" bariatric multivitamin so one with reduced B12 because my B12 was actually too high. In addition to the above, I also take probiotics and fiber pills daily.

    Goal Weight

I started at 316 and lost 60 pounds before surgery WHICH I count. So I started losing in June of 2023 and had surgery gastric bypass March 5 2014. I am down to 197. I have a goal of 150, but I havent been that low since I was in my 20s. I'm 69 now. Well, there is a wedding coming up at the end of April and I love the clothes I can wear now. If I were to lose 20 pounds now I feel like I'd be entering the twilight zone. What would I wear? I modified my favorite clothes from 250 to 316( they must have really been tight then) for the wedding. I no longer drive. I'm afraid i guess of weighing what i did 40 years ago. Help.
  4. Hello, 3 weeks out R N Y gastric bypass and still having abdominal pain/cramping/bloating….. Anyone else???

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

Yea I’m finally able to fit into the smallest of the clothes a friend of a friend has been giving me who had the sleeve a bit ahead of my revision. She is still losing so I’m hoping she does another purge soon. We have different styles so I don’t like a lot of the tops (she is younger) but it’s awesome to not have to buy jeans or exercise stuff or coats. She was even giving me her old bras which unfortunately are too small in the cup because that’s a big expense to keep buying. I am just thankful to not have to buy half as much and hoping for another haul soon. 🤣
  6. Okay, so I had reached a BMI of 40 when I got the referral to the surgical team. But with 6 months of nutrition counseling and the 2 week liquid diet, the day of surgery I had a BMI of 36.3. I chose the bypass and I am very happy with it. My weight loss has not been the dramatic numbers you see with larger patients, but it's been stunning to me. I am almost a year out and am currently within 9 pounds of a normal BMI. I have not been this weight in 30 years and I firmly believe no amount of diet and exercise alone would have gotten me here. I would do it again in a heartbeat and wish I had done it earlier. With regards to the bypass itself, I am very pleased with it. I chose it over the sleeve because of GERD concerns and because my brother, who had the sleeve 15 years ago, has had a lot of regain that I think the bypass will help me avoid to some degree. I had some issues with vomiting for the first several months when I didn't eat very slowly or had something that was not the "right" texture for my picky insides. But other than that, I've been great. At this point, I can eat about a third to a half of a typical portion of most meals so I don't feel like I get funny looks or anything from people who don't know my situation. I do not experience dumping, which is sad because it means I can eat sweets if I want them without getting sick. And yes, I do want them, so managing cravings is my biggest challenge. I no longer care much for bread or pasta and I also don't eat rice. I do like a few roasted potatoes sometimes and I will steal a couple fries from someone else's plate but I won't order them for myself. I mostly prefer protein, veg, and fruit. And, yeah, sweets... My labs have all looked good so far (have to go get blood drawn next week ahead of my 1-year follow up). I feel fantastic. My one concern had been not being able to take ibuprofen because I was taking it a few times a week for pain. Well, within weeks of the surgery, even when my weight was still fairly high, my pain went away. I have had one time in the past year when I had a headache and wished I could take ibuprofen (and actually, I could have if I had really needed to because a single ibuprofen, or even one a week, is not a high enough risk to worry about).
  7. I would ask about the GLP-1 first and if that doesn’t fit for whatever reason then consider revision to Bypass or SADI. I am 3 weeks post sleeve to SADI revision and down 29 pounds. We had similar starting weights although I’m a bit taller than you. I was 235 when I did my sleeve and i gained it all back plus some so you are in a better boat than I was. Since you have alot less to lose that I did and you have kept a big chunk of the weight off I personally would try the GLP-1 first if it’s medically appropriate but that’s a decision your doctor will be able to help you make.

    Revision

Is it a low dose PPI? If so it may be okay to stay on long term. I would ask your surgeon. I have been on a 20mg Omeprazole since after my sleeve and when I had a revision for weight gain I went witb the SADI knowing that I most likely will need to stay on the Omeprazole for life. My surgeon said it would be fine for me. I’m sure if he thought that there was any concern that he would’ve steered me towards the bypass. He left it up to me. He keeps his patients on them for a time post surgery anyways so I haven’t tried without it yet. They also may want you to try Famotodine if you are concerned about the PPI’s (it’s Pepcid). I tried the prescription version which was 20mg before my revision but it didn’t work. I just switched back to the Omeprazole without even asking if there was a stronger one since I knew I was gonna have to switch soon for my surgery anyways Maybe it will work for you??
  9. I had a revision to bypass from the sleeve a little over a year ago because of complication from the sleeve and my only regret is that I didn't just get the bypass to begin with. I was so afraid of the complications that I chose the sleeve and regretted it almost from the very beginning. I have not had 1 single moment of regret with the bypass. I've only had dumping 3x, and since you should take vitamins anyway for health, and since I always took them anyway, it doesn't bother me at all to keep taking them. The malabsorption really hasn't been an issue. It's really just for extended release meds, some vitamins and supplements, etc... You just take extra or take it at 2 different times during the day. It's a lot less overwhelming than it seems. My life is actually SO much better and easier since I had the revision.

    October 2024 Surgery Buddies

I set a timer for every 15 minutes and drink an ounce of water. This is what they had me do in the hospital and it works great. I had gastric bypass on 10/22/24 HW: 395 SW: 261 CW: 246
  11. I am hoping someone can help me out. I am flying into San Diego from Toronto for Gastric Bypass surgery. I am being released from the hospital 2 days after surgery and I am trying to figure out how long I should stay in San Diego. My Surgery is on the 4th of June I was thinking about leaving on the 9th but I have a four hour flight home. What is the recovery like and will it be possible for me to sit for four hours days after my surgery.

    Co-Codamol & Bypass

Definitely not an ideal day, @ShoppGirl! I'll be smarter next time and make sure I test meds before taking them 😭😂 though with that being said, I don't see myself taking cocodamol again! It's definitely a really interesting topic on how our body absorbs things now, and I think @SpartanMaker had a really valid point in that my body is probably absorbing things a lot quicker! It is a conundrum for me, because I fully expected that alcohol would be absorbed quickly post-bypass, and was warned about this by everyone but all it does is give me a headache, no drunk feeling at all! So it's pointless for me 😂
  13. Hi, I’m a sleeve revision from 2020 gained back 50 of 100 lost and I’m scheduled for the sedi on 10/24.
  14. This is the what one Hospital provided me for Gastric Bypass Medicare costs and requirements. One thing I noticed is "Consecutive diet counseling within 1 year of surgery" but did not specify a duration time for the diet. Anyway, thought some might derive some useful info from this. No more saggy arms for Sophie!

Thank you. Congratulations Bypass on your life changing surgery this year. You have come so far, and will be at your goal in no time! Here's some pretty posies to cheer you on toward your goal.
  16. I am 7 months post op and have ben lifting "heavy" for about 3 months now. i am trying to follow a body recomp plan but its been so hard to dial in the right macros, especially when i do loose. I just had a meeting with a dietician who told me i should stick to 1000 calories a day but i am in the gym 2x a day plus i am very active outside the gym as well. im not a competing athlete of course, im still very over weight, but i am pushing my body harder than ever before and i just don't think that my personal trainer or doctors recommendations are correct. one is only thinking about the size of my stomach ( i had bypass) the other is only thinking about the extreme amount of activity. i feel best between 1200 and 1400 cals however my trainer wants me at 2050 and the bariatric dr.'s dietician says 1000. when you were starting out did you eat back the calories burned while exercising to maintain your calorie deficit ? i see so many people saying contradictory things but most haven't had the surgery. id be interested to know what worked for you because your progress is amazing!
  17. OK, so post surgery I have a scar under my belly button that was hard, but the nurse practitioner said it was just because my surgery was a revision and they use that same spot twice. Well now the scar part feels loose, but if I put my finger inside my belly button, I can still feel something hard underneath there. My husband had me feel his and it’s hard too but different. He says that’s just how my belly button feels without all the blubber on top of it, but I don’t know. I don’t remember ever feeling that when I was thin. Has anyone had an umbilical hernia? Is that something that could be caused by the surgery? Am I describing anything close to that? 😂 I plan to ask the surgeon eventually. Actually, I’m doing the bowel prep for a colonoscopy right now and endoscopy for something unrelated but I thought I would ask her tomorrow if she has any idea. I’m just curious what others have to say about their experience. It doesn’t hurt or anything and if it’s a hernia, I am assuming it’s very small but I just really don’t recall anything hard of being there. Maybe it’s just because it’s been a while since I could really feel it. 🤷‍♀️
  18. I had the sleeve done in 2017. I suffered for years with GERD and pain. I had a hiatal hernia repair in April, 2024 and it returned in June 2024. This time my organs were in my chest near my heart. So on November 12th I had a hiatal hernia repair AND gastric bypass. I am sooo tired and run down. The smell of certain foods make me sick. I am so afraid to move to the soft food stage because I am afraid it will cause problems again. I’m taking the vitamins and drinking my fluids. Will all of this pass? I think I am nervous because I wasn’t prepared 100% for the bypass. I knew it was a possibility but had not prepped as a planned bariatric surgery would have been. does the smell of certain foods make sickness go away? I plan to begin the soft diet very slowly . Does anyone have any suggestions? how about the gruesome breath? Does that settle down? thank you for your assistance.

    Do I have a revision

I am pending revision from sleeve to SADI but when i was considering revision to bypass my research brough up a lot of information of revision from bypass and it was to SADI or DS.
  20. GreenTealael

    Re-sleeve or SADI

Did your surgeon explain why he thought a re sleeve would be appropriate/help? Was there any mention of RNY bypass? Are you self paying or going through insurance? Let us know how it goes!
  21. Hi lovelies, I hope you’re all doing well? You were all so supportive with the question I asked a few weeks ago that I thought I would come here and see if you have any advice for me now! As of tomorrow I am eight weeks out from the gastric bypass procedure. I have lost quite a bit of weight (2 stone) which I’m absolutely delighted about (and people are starting to notice which has been a really good feeling). However, I must have THE most stubborn self sabotaging streak because I have started to drink alcohol again (and not just on special occasions) as well as not following the food rules and not exercising. I can’t understand why I’m being like this because my family are so happy that I’ve done this and have been so supportive, and my friends (even though they don’t know about the operation are really starting to notice) so WHY am I doing this to myself? I just wondered if you guys knew of a reason I may have hit the wall so early (I really do not want to fail) and especially if you have any advice, book recommendations apps or anything that I might be able to do to help me get back on track and find my way again. Really appreciated as always thank you xx

    August Surgery buddies

HI bypassers, Can any of you or most of you share the numbers of what you should be eating 2.5 - 3 months post op? Like how many grams/oz per meal? Or how many calories total. Thanks I'd appreciate it.
  23. 10/10 would do again. I only wish I'd done it sooner. While no surgery is risk free, the mortality rate for bariatric surgery is pretty similar to other major elective surgeries, with the overall mortality rate at this point being right around ~1 in 1000, The factors that increase risk the most are higher BMI, older age, being male, as well as having pulmonary hypertension, heart disease, or liver disease. Obviously the more of those you have, the higher the risk. If you are younger, female, only moderately obese, and don't have any major illnesses, the risks should be much lower. It's also pretty well documented that the mortality rate from being obese is higher than the surgery, meaning the riskier thing to do is NOT have the surgery. I honestly feel like my bypass surgery probably saved my life. I felt at the time like I had one foot in the grave, but now feel so much better and healthier.

    hunger???

How hungry is everyone after gastric bypass surgery? One of my biggest fears is being constantly hungry since no food is actually making it through my stomach. I have a week to go before my surgery, just starting the pre-op diet tomorrow, and a bit nervous if i can make it through without feeling like I'm starving.
