    Food Before and After Photos

A disaster of a breakfast- bacon egg and cheese omelette that made me physically sick. 135 calories for what I ate prior to it coming back up. Then dinner of leftover stuffed pepper casserole topped with garbanzo beans and fried onions. 396 calories. In between I’ve been testing crispy cookie recipes for snickerdoodles and chocolate chip. The red velvet cookies are a cheat using a boxed cake mix (add 2 eggs and 1/2 cup oil) and Hershey’s cream cheese chips. Annnnnnnd, now I’m onto baking oatmeal scotchies and eventually testing a recipe I’m going to call blueberry cheesecake crumbles (blueberry cream cheese cookies with a blueberry swirled cream cheese frosting then topped with streusel. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do with all these cookies (currently 13 dozen) seeing as thanksgiving is this week and everyone will be eating pies and such.

    Weak 2.5 weeks post op

Hi Tracy, My surgery was about 3 weeks prior to you. Are you on solid food yet? Curious how many calories you are getting nowadays? My husband thinks I'm not eating enough or often enough. I'm at 500-600 calories. Thanks so much for your response. Laura
  3. Panzanella salad with a generous helping of burrata, yum! i feel like i may have over calculated the cals on this one, but looking at the breakdown the majority of the cals came from the burrata and the olive oil, so i guess that makes sense. Anyhoo, 402 calories for the bowl, ate it all! I also had 3 chicken wings i heated up to eat but ended up handing it over the the Kid cuz panzanella salads are effing filling, man.

    Comments on your body

I have not seen any family other than my mom, dad & brother since my surgery. Luckily my neighbors are absolute angels & said such nice things to me But I am TERRIFIED of seeing the rest of my family. They are kind but are very blunt. I told my parents to not tell them about my surgery & I worry they'll slip up bc my family is the type to want to know all most intrusive things. But even without them knowing about the surgery I know they'll want every detail. "high protein calorie deficit" is all I'll say, since that is in fact also true!

the dietitian I did my six-month pre-op diet with had me eating 2000 calories/day and exercising at least 3x a week, I think (well, I'm sure on the calories - I can't remember how often she had me exercising). Between that and the all-liquid two-week diet my surgeon required, I lost 57 lbs (15-20 of that was from the two-week liquid diet)). But then I weighed over 300 lbs, so I would have lost weight on 2000 cal/day no matter what (I was probably eating 3000 calories before that in order to maintain that weight). It wasn't that hard to do. I think i would have struggled on 1200 calories, but then, it's likely I started out much heavier than you.

For me, the longer I ate healthy in a that same 1200 calorie deficit, the more it became second nature. It gets easier as time goes & it'll go by QUICK. That discipline will become a habit!

    September surgery buddies!!

Yesterday I had my first experience of really going off the rails post surgery. We’re traveling and stopped within 2 miles of my favorite restaurant which we don’t have within hours of my house. So I ate my favorite chicken fingers and a couple hours later half a piece of cheesecake. Not gonna lie they were delicious but I definitely overate and probably hit 2000 calories yesterday. Otherwise I have been pretty much on track, even while traveling. How much do you think this will set me back weight loss-wise?
  9. OH & I noticed you mentioned not knowing the calories for the Puree stage. This is what my Kaiser Permanente handbook says! If in the future you need more info on calories for each stage let me know & I'll take a pic for u!

I dropped 50+ lbs pre-surgery by cutting out all foods containing sugar, flour, white potatoes, rice, and processed foods. These are my trigger foods. I consider myself to be a sugar/food addict. I can never go back to eating these things with abandon. I started using the Baritastic app. I occasionally used liquid protein shakes during that period. My calorie count dropped to around 1000 per day. I attended water exercise classes three days a week, including swimming 1/4 mile each time. I also increased my mileage on my walking tricycle to at least a mile a day. I've lost another 50+ lbs since my RNY>RNY revision surgery. I still strive to avoid my trigger foods. It's harder to resist now and weight loss is slow going, but I'm still dropping a few pounds a month with lengthy stalls.

I'm still working on pre-op stuff. I'm told that it will likely be February before I have surgery. Any recommendations in the meantime? I'm currently doing 1200 calories and 1 hour of cardio, 5 days per week. How do I keep my sanity until then? I'm really impatient about the wait. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I track everything I eat: calories, carbs, fat, cholesterol, sodium, anything that is on the label since I manage my weight by daily average calories. I tracked in all the four stages: liquid, pureed foods, soft foods and solid foods.

    macros during post op diet

I track, but I only track to ensure I hit my protein. I had surgery to break the cycle of dieting, and counting calories and carbs and all that just perpetuates the cycle. I would suggest before you start, have a conversation with your team. Its very likely that they didn't give you macros because they don't want you tracking and obsession over them. Protein is really your only hard and fast "goal" and the rest is far less important, especially this early out.
  14. greetings, currently transitioning from full liquids to purées (woo hoo) and I am starting to track again (instead of just ounces of liquid). My diet guidelines tell me what and general amounts for purée and beyond but no specifics for macros like calories, carbs and the like (there is a protein macro of 60-70 g) those of you tracking, what did you do for purée, soft and beyond ?
  15. Yes, rest and Take it easy like everyone else has said you have had major surgery along with a drastic calorie intake reduction

    Day 7 concerns

Are you tracking your calories? At a week out, you're probably not getting much over 500 calories a day. Logic says that consuming only 500 calories a day, you're going to lose weight whether you want to or not. But, your body is freaking out, right now. It doesn't know what you've done to it. It has to adjust to its current condition and then you will start losing again. Stalls - and even slight weight gains - are a normal and expected part of the process. If you're going to weigh yourself everyday, then you need to come to terms with this fact. The scale is going to go up and down, but the overall trend will be downward. If you're making yourself crazy with it, then switch to once-a-week weigh ins.

    October 2022 surgery support

I'm 4 weeks and 2 days post op. I'm down 18 pounds since surgery. My clothes are also looser and I really love it, too. My weight loss was happening really fast, in the first couple of weeks and it was kind of scaring me. Thankfully, it has slowed down. I start soft foods, today. So far, I haven't had any problems with getting in enough protein and water. My hunger is really starting to return. So I've had to start eating food more often. I was eating 3 times a day, now I'm up to 5. I've cut down my use of protein shakes to 1 or 2 per day. I was drinking 3, before. I'm typically getting anywhere from 600-900 calories per day. I was cleared for exercise, so I've been doing slow walks on my elliptical - 15 minutes a day and keeping it under 7 miles per hour. I'm trying real hard not to overdo it. My incisions are healing. I have one that was bigger than the others and it's being a little slow to close up. I still have some bruising. I'm still fairly sore. But, if I sneeze now, I don't feel like I'm going to die. So that's progress.
  18. Thank you everyone for your thoughtful prospective and advice. I am better this morning and I have restarted to journal my thoughts even just randomly bable. Getting it out of my head helps me view it from a different angle. There are some great ideas given to me and it will make a difference. Regrouping and setting realistic goals again. I I do track very carefully my nutrition and calories carefully. I'm going to try to leave a few 100 for my later on snack. . Thank you again for your suggestions and positive thoughts. I am greatfull to be part of this community. Forward with the journey!!

    Celebrate you today!

I love this post! I have been staying under my calories for many months now. I am still waiting for my surgery date. I have lost 25lbs since I started on this journey. I have my 2nd appointment with my team tomorrow. I hope it goes well.
  20. Hello everyone. I’m new here and wanted to introduce myself. I found this forum a few days ago and have enjoyed reading the posts. I am a 40 year old female and had my surgery on 10/24. My starting weight when I first started the pre op liquid diet was 215. I was 204 the day of my surgery. I’m just a bit over the 3 week mark and I’m down to 191. The past week or so the scale hasn’t moved much. I was a bit confused at first since I know I’m not consuming more than 5-600 calories a day but then I started reading about the stalls in the week 2-3 range and realized it’s normal as my body needs time to heal and get my water level back up. So I’m trying not to stress over the scale. It’s crazy because in my diet days I would have been thrilled at a 13 pound loss in 3 weeks, but after surgery I’m like “is that all?!” But I’m trusting the process. I also know that I’m starting out at a lower BMI then most people that have this surgery so I’m probably not going to have these massive losses. The surgery itself was pretty smooth. I work nights so I got off work at 5am, took a quick shower and went to the hospital at 6:30am to start the procedure. Needless to say after surgery I slept for most the day lol. I was a bit sore and nauseous when I woke up but they were good about giving me meds. By the second day I didn’t have as much pain but the nausea was still there. The most annoying part was I had to pee every hour thanks to all the fluids they pumped through my IV. So I constantly had to call for a nurse to unhook me and help me up and into the bathroom. The only other hard part was my vision. No one warned me that a side effect of the nausea patch they put behind my ear effects your vision. It kind of freaked me out because I couldn’t read my cell phone screen at all. It was just a big blur. I finally asked the nurse and she explained the issue. Before I left the hospital I asked them to remove the patch. It took another 2 days before my vision was fully restored. So that was a challenge. Not only could I not read my phone but I couldn’t read the prescription bottles either. Had to rely on my family to tell me which pills were which and when to take them. Otherwise the experience wasn’t terrible. Otherwise I’m feeling pretty good. The weird gurgling every time I eat is a bit annoying. It doesn’t hurt exactly but it’s still not comfortable. At first I thought maybe I was eating too fast, but that doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’ve learned through this forum that it’s pretty common. What else….. oh vitamins! The chewable ones were gross so I switched to the chewy ones. They’re not terrible but not great either. I’m looking forward to when I can just switch to capsule vitamins. I have officially dropped a pants size so that’s nice. I have a range of clothes from size 16-10 from all my yo yo dieting phases so I at least have options while I’m losing. Today I’m in the 14s and packed up my 16s to donate. If I get smaller than the 10s I’ll be planning a shopping trip. I really enjoy this forum. The only people that know I had the surgery was my wife and my best friend. I didn’t tell the rest of my family or coworkers. So having a safe place to talk about my experience and compare stories has been nice.
  21. My post-op programme didn't limit anything - no calorie goals, no protein goals, no fluid goals even! I learnt all that by being on this forum. I was told just eat as you feel. Seems just basic common bariatric sense to me now to get my protein in first, veg second, fruit third and then other carbs after that. Even now at almost exactly a year out I don't reach 50g carbs or anything like it most days. Other than weekends, when I *choose* to drink some alcohol. So many ways to skin a rabbit, LOL.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Official one year doctor appointment over. 271 was the official weigh in at doctor's office... this translates to an overall loss of 132. Yeah right... Lol Doc was not very happy with my progress in the last couple months. My weightloss "really stagnated" since my 8 month appointment. Yeah, it was less, but to be fair, the 8 month appointment was really a 9 month appointment by the time we were able to meet. It was a zoom appointment which means the weight I provided them was from my home scale and not with clothes on in their office, and finally, I've been hitting the gym much harder in the last few months... so I know there is new muscle to be accounted for. ... BUT, no excuses right. His goal for me is another 30 pounds off in the next 6 months. He doesn't seem to buy into the idea that I have been recomping at the gym at all. His basic message to me was start tracking everything I eat don't go over 1500 calories per day and get serious for the next 6 months. He does want me to use a scale that can track body fat / lean muscle measurements, so I may need to buy one. So, the report from my doctor was sort of "good job the first 9 months... but what's going on now!?" I'm back to tracking my intake and I need to report back to my dietitian in the next week.
  23. I have no specific carb restrictions, just food stages. However there are foods that are best to avoid post sleeve for a while and they include the low nutrient, high calorie empty foods like basic white rice, breads and pasta… because of their processed nature (even many white rices are very processed) they turn to glucose easy and easily spike blood sugars even in some non diabetics causing issues that will make you hungry and eat more … personally, when I reach that stage where I can eat it, breads and pasta will be sometimes foods.. tho for rice I don’t use some of the low end, but buy a high quality basmati from an Indio-pak store.. basmati has a lower glycemic index because of the way that the starches are naturally aligned … it will still not be a staple food anymore but will have a little when I can finally eat chicken tikka masala or methi mater again
  24. Each program has it's own set of guidelines for their own reasons. My theory is that if you trust them to preform surgery then trust them to guide you through the process. Follow their plan. My program never limited carbs. As @Tomo said, just get protein in first then some veggies and from there eat what you want while staying within your daily calories. I think other than a single bite here and there I probably couldn't get carbs in till 3/4 months after surgery anyway though. Now, it just depends on the day. Sometimes I eat 30 carbs and other days I eat 150.
  25. Hi everyone, I'm having a really tough time dealing with my mother in law. There's no kicking her out, my husband won't because his other siblings won't take her in. (She tried to split up his brother with his new wife just after they had a baby, and his oldest sister has ended all contact with her) Part of the reason I did this surgery is to have a reason to say no to her feeding me/guilt tripping me to eat junk food. Before she moved in 5 years ago. I was 130lbs. I know it's 100% My responsibility what goes in my mouth, but over the years, she's made it so hard. I was done, defeated. After reaching out and getting therapy, they think cutter her off will be the only way to have long term weightloss success. She's not meant to do any shopping but she does, all she buys is junk food in the reduced section. She buys so much, she bought a massive freezer to store it all in. The worst part is that she has no idea of how calories work, so she thinks eating healthy food = will undo all the junk she ate, so in her mind by eating all of it, after a chocolate binge, she'll lose weight so she will eat all the meat and vege in the house (she's about 450lbs) and then guilt trips us because we didn't eat the 5 cakes, 6 packs of donuts she bought etc. I thought with this surgery I could just say "I can't eat those things, they could kill me" and maybe she would stop buying this much junk. Sadly no, she's going H.A.M at me now. She threw a tantrum when my husband told her I was getting the surgery, tried everything in her power to stop me from getting it done. Once I had it done, she started spreading rumors, said I spend $25000 on cosmetic surgery etc, she's just really making life hard for me, mentally and physically. She's also started eating my protein water, eating my Optifast, denying it. Then offering me things like donuts when I have no food in the house, which I can't eat, I had surgery 15 days ago, and shes refusing to acknowledge it. Instead she'll buy my favorite junk food and put it on display and keep telling me it needs to be eaten NOW. I found out a few days ago, the meals I make for my husband she keeps throwing in the bin to justify buying the junk, she said he throws them out because he hates them and he's a bad husband and I should leave him, I told him this and he said he'd never do that and that she's been saying him I'm useless and I'm not cooking for him and if he wanted she can ask me to leave. So she's clearly started trying to put us against each other, he said she used to do this to him and his siblings as kids and we just need to ignore what she says and tell each other, so we know what's going on. I'm just so exhausted, I can't keep living like this, I have to hide my food and I've started to think about the next stages, which are going to be so much harder to stop her from sabotaging. I just want to be able to meal prep and have a normal life but my husband has said, she can't buy a house until interest rates settle down, there's no rentals in the area and he can't kick her out because she will have nowhere to go, so we just have to put up with her until then. I just think I needed to rant about this but at the same time I'm just really tired and I just want to have a normal life. It feels like I'm probably going to be hiding optifast and just using that for meals until she's gone, because I can't trust anything in the kitchen.
