Thanksgiving Strategy on Soft Foods
Meganator replied to Meganator's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I agree with pintsizedmallrat. Usually we roast turkey, but I think I might be somewhere this year where they might smoke or fry it. Fry is juicy usually- but fried. Smoked is usually pretty dry and will need something extra. If it is super dry, I'll probably use wetter food to help it go down better. Ham also seems to be on the menu and it's hard for me to resist. I might have a small taste, but focus more on turkey breast (higher protein). Thankfully our green bean casserole is mostly canned stuff. My guess is that I would have to avoid the fried onion topping. I would avoid skins in mashed potatoes as well if they include them. I'm just afraid my eyes will be hungrier than what my pouch can handle. Not everyone there will know I had surgery and a lot of what this family does revolves around food. Hoping I can be able to lay low enough to not be awkward and enjoy myself. -
I am also a sandwich lover. Here is what I have found (2.5 months post-op). I have used Sola bread and Orowheat bread for sandwiches. Both are keto-friendly, meaning they are high in fiber and protein and low in carbs. The pieces are small, but they are still 60 calories a slice (Orowheat) or 70 cals/slice (Sola), so that is over 100 calories before you put anything in the bread. You will also need to toast the bread because it helps chew it down and regular bread can "ball up" in your stomach and cause problems. If you use toasted bread and use the sandwich as an occasional meal rather than a staple meal, you should be OK. I did eat some tuna fish sandwiches for lunch, but it was just tuna fish straight out of the foil packet on toasted Orowheat. I went with tuna for the high protein content and Omega 3s. With fries, moderation will absolutely be key. Can you steal 3 fries off someone's plate and eat them without discomfort or throwing off your diet? Yeah. I wouldn't eat a full compliment of them, both because the grease/oil could cause dumping and a fry doesn't have a ton of nutrition. If you are going to eat potatoes, try to eat them baked/boiled with the skin on, to maximize your nutrients.

Well done on the weight you have lost. It's not usual to gain a little weight in the 24 months or so following weight surgery from the lowest weight achieved. If you are trying to gain muscle weight you will gain weight if you don't reduce body fat to the same degree or more. Volume wise muscle is more dense than body fat. So a litre (in volume) will weigh more than body fat. So while you have gained scale weight is it possible (with body recomp) that you have actually reduced physically in size? Are you clothes feeling a bit loose? A dexa scan may be useful to you ( they seem to be much cheaper in the USA than most other places). It would give an idea of excess body fat and help you determine how much lean body mass you need to build as well as how much excess body fat you need to lose. For you at this stage it may be about body recomp vs scale weight loss.

Hi, I started mine yesterday. I’ve gained A lot of weight during Covid and gained back some bad eating habits. I’m hoping it will help me get in control of my bad eating and loose some lbs whilst I’m there.

If you graze eat constantly the weight comes back with RNY. It’s still work and keeping good habits that makes you loose or maintain weight with RNY.

Hi guys, so I’m nearly 5 years out from gastric bypass. Original weight was 364lb I went down to 153lbs and was scheduled in to have my excess skin removed. The operation was cancelled due to Covid (I’m in UK) but during lockdown I’ve developed really bad eating habits and gone back up to 196lb so again of 43lb :( I’m absolutely devastated. Enough is enough I need to get this weight off and look forward to my skin removal. I’ve been looking at the 10 day pouch reset and thought yes it’s just what I need to get my brain back thinking about good food and good portion sizes again. For me food is an addiction so it will be incredibly hard but I’m determined. I was just looking for some good / kind words from anyone who tried this and succeeded. Success stories/tips would be much appreciated . Thankyou x

Hi guys ! I'm basically 4 months post op and lost around 58lbs (26,5kgs). I've been walking a lot, but I don't feel like it's enough. I haven't started going to the gym because I've seen so many different opinion on going to the gym and weightlifting. Dr Vuong explains that during this phase our body is in catabolism, meaning we basically breakdown our muscles and that's how we loose all this weight. He says that starting heavy exercise is counter intuitive as it will increase our appetite and work against the surgery. I'm very lost right now because I would like to start going to the gym and shape my body. I'm an absolute beginner, I have no idea what to do. Could you please let me know what worked for you in terms of exercise and everything ? Also if you have any advices on what exercise I should do ? And if I consider starting weightlifting, where to begin ? Thank you so much

Too much weight loss? Is that really possible?
mae7365 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have a call with the Bariatric Dietician on Tuesday to discuss my continued weight loss. My primary care doctor is concerned that I continue to loose weight (8 pounds in 5 weeks) this far out from surgery. I've lost 60 pounds since RNY last year and 97 pounds since my pre-op weight pre-sleeve. The dietician thinks I'm in calorie deficit because I'm very active - I walk 5 miles 4-5 days/week and do Zumba 3 days/week. But I refuse to give up my healthy exercise habits! At 64, I never expected to look athletic and have muscle definition vs. sagging skin. (I still have sagging skin, but the muscle has really helped minimize the flabbiness!) My husband and children are concerned - "Are you sure you don't have cancer?" "You need to gain some weight, you look too skinny" "Are you sure you are ok?"...… If it was just petty people commenting vs. my family, I'd blow it off. I keep assuring them that I'm the healthiest I've been since my 20's. I'm hoping that talking to the dietician will give me the tools I need to level out the weight loss without giving up my healthy lifestyle. I guess I'm just looking to see if there are others in this forum that have experienced the same thing. I refuse to call it a problem, I'd rather call it a challenge. -
I had one. It was very helpful. I weighed 146 lbs at the time and wanted to see how much more I could lose. The tech said - "none - you're already at 22% body fat - so you're already there!". I wouldn't have known that otherwise since i had a lot of excess skin that I assumed was fat - but nope!

Any October 2021 Surgeries?
Breanne (w 2 pups) replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Wear a dress to go home in. The pressure of pants, even loose pants bc of the waistband. I would recommend bringing earplugs and an eye mask. You might not be in a private room. I forgot these bc I was spoiled from my previous surgery. -
Any October 2021 Surgeries?
Shrinkingvee replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes we are all different, I was given a basic plan but barely any choice and then told I can start soft foods early I’m 3 weeks post op Monday. we only had fluids for 1 day then it’s puréed for up to 4 weeks then soft foods 4-8 weeks then 8 weeks normal foods. I’ve tried flaked salmon, cucumber thin without the skin, ham cut in tiny pieces, I seemed to have gone off eggs which I used to love. crisp bread with reduced fat laughing cow triangles or with marmite or Avocado , I have protein juice as it’s easier to drink than water and helps me get my fluids in. I wish you the best of luck. we are on to our new life now! there isn’t any support here just a 6 week check so before the. You are on your own except if you want to ask a question. -
My surgery date is November 12 and i just went to my Pre- Ansesthesia Testing yesterday. I notice when i got weighed that i gained 5 pounds, my surgeon told me that she doesn't want me to gain anymore weight, now I'm stressed out I've been working out and cutting back calories as i was told to do. but instead of loosing I've gained, I don't know if me being on my period for the past month has anything to do with the weight gain either. I just hope this wont postponed my surgery I've worked so hard these past few weeks

November 2019 surgery and tummy tuck included
Lilypop posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
pictures are included so please be advised before hand I do include the surgery pictures just not to gross just the healed scars and all of what a fleur de lis tummy tuck looks like!!! 💢‼️‼️ Well it will soon be my 2 year anniversary for the gastric sleeve and let me tell you what kinda of world wind it has been! To this day if I eat more then 4 ounces of steak I can’t eat anything for the rest of the day since it feels stuck but so far I have been able to eat regular foods. My breads still have to be toasted to not get the tummy gurgles. My stomach talks to everyone especially at night so if I am in a night class and I haven’t smacked at my usually 4 hours it’s like “hey professor hear me answer you” so YES my stomach after I eat speaks to the whole room and after hours as well. The bathroom problem is still a problem so I can poop regularly for 2-3 days and after I’m stuck for 2 day with nothing unless I have a day full of meals then I am golden. I also had a fleur de lis tummy tuck back in January. And that itself was a mess and such a hard recovery which was worth it to fit into my clothes, just wish I didn’t have those hiccups. food wise I have been eating a bit more from what I did in the beginning but never a full size normal plate always the little cereal bowl. So I would say I can eat about a cup or so of food depending on the food heavy steaks only 4-5 ounces and some side dishes. But it’s always at 8 ounces max on good days and other day a bit more. I was seeing a nutritionist even at 2 years in and she had been amazing. weight gain and loss : before my surgeries I was at 256lb after I lost 92 pounds, then after the tummy tuck they removed about 10lbs of skin from my mid section. i was down to 147lbs in January of 2021 after the tummy tuck then now in November I have normalized to a regular weight of 154lbs -156lbs in all it had been a very very long journey and I would say for the most part I would do it again if given the opportunity. now for the pictures guys it has been really really amazing to see me like this find me on Instagram ☺️ @aishas1992 -
I have itchy legs and bumpy skin. I never thought not eating enough protein was the cause. I blamed washing powders and soaps. Who knew. Every day is a learning day. Cheers
-
It’s the protein you’re consuming. If you were like me, I never ate close to 60g of protein a day before surgery. Now I often eat more than 60g. Plus, you’re generally eating a more nutrient dense diet than you did before. The protein supplies your body with amino acids which are used to produce keratin which is part of the structure of nails & hair. I used to have itchy skin on my legs & little bumps on my arms. No more lumps & no more itch thanks to the protein too. The broader the variety of protein sources you eat the better the benefits. It’s wonderful. 🙂 Oh, and I don’t take any vitamins or supplements. PS - you could always try laser hair removal if frequent shaving gets too annoying. https://thebeautychef.com/blogs/blog/the-importance-of-protein-for-glowing-skin-hair-nails

Long term diet after DS?
Arabesque replied to ClareLynn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many post op plans are pretty similar regardless of surgery. With my sleeve I had to follow 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks purées (think sloppy no real chewing), 2 weeks soft (still pretty moist only a few chews needed) then slowly introduce more dense food as able. Certain foods were not allowed for a period of time & others not while I was losing. You may find you have to keep food pretty moist (think sauces, gravies, etc.) for a while. Your tummy can be pretty sensitive to begin too & foods you previously ate you can’t yet. Plus it’s not unusual for your sense of taste & smell to change temporarily. Some have trouble with things like eggs & chicken. It’s trial & error but don’t give up a food, just try it again later and if you need to stay at a stage longer that’s fine - we heal & recover differently. The best place to start is with the the list of allowed foods provided by your surgical team. They’ve been chosen so they don’t stress your healing & sensitive tummy & altered digestive system. You may still have issues with some or you may not. Raw fruit & vegetables, fruit skin, etc. are too coarse for your digestive system at first. The reason for no rice, bread, pasta is two fold. One to cut out processed empty calorie, low nutrition, starchy carbs from your diet while losing (many add these back in moderation in maintenance). And secondly because they swell & fill your much smaller tummy before you can get your protein in. Protein is key. Always protein first. Most eating plans while you’re losing are low fat, low carb, high protein. This is the time you also start exploring how you want to eat in the future. You try new ingredients, cooking styles, try alternative protein & nutritional sources. You’ll find you become very focussed on the nutritional value of what you eat. If you’re not sure about what you can eat & when have a conversation with your dietician. I saw my dietician every fortnight until about 4 months into maintenance then COVID hit but I could call her at any time I needed. We would discuss foods I had added to my diet, how I managed them & what I wanted to try next. She would sometimes suggest alternatives or suggest I wait or go slowly with some things. Good luck. -
I saw the dietician for a pre-op consultation about how to eat after the surgery. The booklet she gave me has 3 stages: liquid, mushy and then "general" diet (which starts after 1 month). I have gotten the impression from posts here that there may be a stage after this? For example, there are some foods that are prohibited in the stage 3 general diet that she gave me, and I want to understand if those are "don't eat them until healed and you test to see if it works for you in some small portion" or "never eat them ever again". Some of the things to avoid are: raw fruit, fruit skin, raw carrot, whole green beans, any starches (rice, bread, pasta). I was wondering if anyone has a link to what a good diet/food list looks like for someone in maintenance after a duodenal switch? I wanted to make meal plans for each phase and get a better understanding what to expect before I have surgery, when I'm still feeling okay and have energy to plan. 😊

Wow! That's really low calorie. By 6 months out I was expected to hit 1000-1200 per day. These days a "high day" is 1300 cal and a low day is 1000. I find if you eat too little, your body stalls faster too because it thinks you are starving. I try to vary each day by at least 100 calories when I am paying attention and actually loosing. So glad to hear you are going down again this week. That's wonderful! And yes, I agree. On a longer stall, I have totally slipped into the mindset of "Oh well, guess that's it for weight loss. At least I weigh less than I have since I was 19!" I mean, I wouldn't even mind stopping loosing weight at 180. At my height that's still way too much but 102lbs down would be such an amazing thing regardless.

How do you deal with people telling you to stop losing weight?
lizonaplane replied to Crick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
These things... Even if you've never had a weight issue or weight loss surgery, you can't lose weight in one specific place. And, it does look like what you've got there is just loose skin. And... when you are wearing a shirt it doesn't show at all. But I think you may have to learn to live with the comments for the time being unfortunately until as @Arabesque said, people come to learn what you look like now and replace the old you with the new you in their minds. I also want to add that I hope I am as successful as you are!! You're an inspiration! -
How do you deal with people telling you to stop losing weight?
Arabesque replied to Crick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, the unsolicited advice & sometimes hurtful comments. People do get over it & as @ms.sss sud it becomes old news. Now I just get comments about how good I look 😉. When you first loose the weight it is a bit of a shock to others & yourself. They (& you) have a picture of you in their heads & it dues to align anymore. Like they can’t recognise you anymore. It takes time to get used to how you look being so much slimmer & for that fat image to be replaced. Also you will find that once your weight stabilises your remaining fat seems to resettle around your body. At first it seemed I had lost my hour glass shape & I had no butt at all. Now, my waist is definitely there again & I have a little booty but my weight has not changed. If you are working on toning you’ll likely notice the resettling more. And don’t forget either that muscle weighs more than fat. As @ms.sss also said your weight will be lower if you have skin removal. So it is something to take into consideration. I think you may even find that the abdominal fat you see is really just loose skin. I didn’t go down the skin removal path as I don’t have much loose skin. (It doesn’t impede me in any way & isn’t noticeable even in fitted body con clothes.) There are a lot of factors that influence how much loose skin you end up with: highest weight, how long you were overweight, age, gender, genetics, weight gain & loss history, etc. So you can never really compare what you look like with others. Though we’re human & we can’t always stop ourselves doing that. 😉 I always say you have to find a weight you are happy with, are healthy at & can maintain without having to make too restrictive sacrifices that limit how you enjoy your life. Only you know what weight that is. Congrats on your weight loss. You’re looking amazing. -
Food Before and After Photos

This lovely uhhh “warm salad” is just what I needed today. Massaged kale and spinach in avocado oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, and Himalayan pink salt. Sautéed for about 30 seconds to a minute. Topped with pan seared, skin-on salmon and balsamic vinegar caramelized red onions. Would’ve been about 415 calories and 35g protein if I had finished it all but I’m saving the rest for breakfast or lunch tomorrow. Definitely made my heart happy. -
How do you deal with people telling you to stop losing weight?
catwoman7 replied to Crick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think you look perfect! What's left is just loose skin. btw - it's VERY common to regain about 10% of your lost weight during year 2 or 3, so I would not worry about being too thin right now. I think you look great! I purposely went a little below my goal because I knew the rebound was really common - and yep, it happened to me!! (lost 235 lbs - gained 20 lbs in year 3) -
How do you deal with people telling you to stop losing weight?
Crick posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So, I am just over 9 months post-op. I hit my official goal in August but my personal, unofficial goal was 135 which I hit last week. However, I think I can still go lower - yes, I am wearing size 6 pants and jeans and small tops but I especially have weight around my belly. I can see it shrinking from the edges but I still have another at least 5 lbs I could lose I think. Plus, I have a TON of loose skin. I’m already starting to save for plastics but that’s not the point. In the past week I have had 3 people all tell me to stop losing weight (this was unsolicited, BTW) and that I don’t want to get too thin. Now, I respond that I am working with a doctor and nutritionist and I am still in the normal BMI range (I know, it’s a horrible measure but it’s one that people are at least familiar with) and that I could reasonably lose more and still maintain a healthy BMI. I am really trying to work on building muscle/toning as I have been since the end of March when I was fully vaccinated. I am really frustrated because I can’t imagine the audacity of people (and one of these folks is a dear mentor that I look up to) to tell me this. I know part of this is that I am so frustrated when I see other folks pictures pre-plastic surgery that were sort of similar stats and they look so much better than I do now, and I try not to let that cloud my judgment, but I am curious how others have dealt with people telling you that you are getting too small? Attaching pics to prove that I still can and should lose more in my stomach area (although what’s above my belly button is just extra skin I think that will require surgery).
