Multi Vita and Medic Alert bracelet
ItsAboutTheJourney replied to loras68's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Before I left the hospital the nurse strongly urged me to get a medical bracelet to state "no blind ng tubes". She shared a story with me of another patient with VSG who got into a car accident and the paramedics inserted a tube and punctured something. I don't remember the exact complication but the nurse said the patient was going to deal with the consequences for the rest of her life. That was enough for me to buy one. Like a previous poster stated, I got mine from RoadID. They have tons of options to choose from. You can even pay extra to do an entire database with all your med info that lists all surgeries you've had, current meds you're on, allergies, emergency contact etc. I had 2 separate incidents (prior to VSG) where I passed out bc my blood pressure meds weren't balanced right. So I WANT paramedics to have any info they need if something ever happens again. I'm not embarrassed wearing the bracelet. I'd rather have peace of mind that should I ever become unresponsive, the info is readily available to a medical professional. -
Is / was your nutritionist all that helpful?
gigito2 replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Seriously?!? You asked about Type I DM with a BS of 35 & she didn't know or get back to you?!? While a label of "nutritionist" doesn't imply any specific level of education or licensing; that is just beyond the pale. Perhaps you should mention this to your surgeon? She (your NUT) definitely should not be counselling anyone... To get back to the original question - my NUT was not the greatest, but would seem like a genius compared to PP's! She also recommended all sorts of foods with artificial sweeteners and other ingredients I consider almost harmful to one's health. When I asked how she could consider them "healthy" she changed tactics and proffered using instant brown & wild rice (just 2 examples). Sorry - what's the point of that? And I'll pass on using Aspartame & the like in the Quest for "health". Just sayin... She also told my son (who is going thru the process as well) that he should change his career because he's a shift worker and mentioned that he probably couldn't give up caffeine forever. Right - like that's gonna happen.... (He's in his mid-forties & makes a good living.) In the end, I think it's up to us, as educated consumers, to follow the advice of the professionals - but also to know the difference between a professional & someone who may not know his/her head from a hole in the ground.... Research & education are good things - especially under the guidance of a good physician. @@VSGAnn2014 I had four consults wit my dietician/nutritionist. It was good information for beginners in WLS. Protein and Water requirements. Vitamin supplements. food portions and stages. My team from our hospital is great. With this exception. All answers are cookie cut for people in the weightloss stage. Its a one size fits all. I talked to my dietician at a meeting. I asked about my blood sugars dropping to 35. I'm a type one diabetic. She did not know. Took my information and said she would call me...Never returned my call I talked with the same nutritionist at another meeting. My hair loss is ridiculous at this point. I'm over a year out and its still falling. She gave me the cookie cut answers that we all get. Biotine, protein intake.. i had to explain how far I'm out again and I have tried more that what she had mentioned. She took my contact information said she would call me back ....Still have not received a call back. -
Treadmill VS Elliptical
hazeleyegrl1 replied to bandster_1007's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
i LOVE LOVE LOVE my elliptical....I'm doing a 2008 Challenge: A Year of Miles on my elliptical! I have 365 days to complete 365 miles on it. I will admit that whenever I first started using it, after 10 or 15minutes I was done...couldn't go on anymore...couldn't finish a mile! I still loved it though, I just had to build up to a mile....and now, I have found myself finishing a mile and going farther and farther past that mile as my stamina builds up. Plus, there are different programs on there to build up your resistance. I can tell you this....I used to walk 3miles a day, 3 times a week....and just 1 mile on my elliptical I feel like I sweat more and get an overall better workout then 3 miles of just walking. I don't have a treadmill, so I can't honestly say anything one way or another about them....but I will 100% endorse the elliptical. and as far as the one you pick out, just make sure it is one that feels good to you and you are comfortable on it....oh, and make sure its sturdy.... mine does squeek and my hubby has had to adjust it and its leveling a few times, but i won't trade it in for a new one bc it cost me over $300 back in december and i will just turn up the radio louder and keep going if i have too....LOL.... xoxo, christie Hope that info helps. -
I can tolerate rice u can also make other grains too I can make rice pretty good but the other grains not so much... I Had a rice cooker steamer about 15 yrs ago and did well with it. I still have it unfortunately it no longer works properly. I also want one I can delay cook times that would be awesome bc I work till 7 sometimes 8 at night. It would be super when I came home wouldn't have to cook.

My journey started only about 9-10 months ago when I first learned about the VSG. I approached my doctor, she agreed, and we started the process for insurance. However, by about April of this year I was entirely fed up with the constant hoops they were making me jump through, and the co-pays I was having to pay even just to meet their requirements. I started looking into self-pay with little hope as I don't just have that kind of money lying around. Then I saw Alex's post for the $4399 surgery in Mexico. My brother had suggested looking at Tijuana surgeons, but I had shot it down. I did some digging, educated myself, asked a ton of questions, and within a month I had a down payment, and a surgery date scheduled with the BariatricPalMX team led by Dr. Illan. This all included getting picked up in San Diego, brought to Tijuana, the surgery, 2 nights stay in the hospital, 2 nights in the recovery condos. And then, voila! Time to go home. Being picked up and brought over was non-stressful, easy peasy. Stacy, who works for the BariatricPalMX team, did a great job at easing my mind on the drive over. She was so warm and welcoming! Once arriving at florence Hospital, I had blood drawn, an IV put in, and chest x-rays done. Soon after all the doctors started coming in (sorry, I don't remember all names). Everything was explained to me, every question I might've had was answered. I think the first time something happened that I wasn't expecting was straight out of surgery. I was in the recovery room outside the OR and I was in PAIN. Most people didn't seem to experience much pain, but I did. Whether it was gas pain or actual pain, I don't know. They gave me two doses of morphine, and that didn't do anything other than make me extremely warm and nauseas. After another hour or two, a different pain medicine was administered with some anti-nausea, something for gas, and then eventually something to prevent infection. The rest of that day I was really weak, really uncomfortable, and did some walking and breathing exercising as much as I could. I also will say, don't expect to get some restful sleep, haha. Nurses in and out every hour or two hours. But this is just a testament to how attentive and on top of it the staff was during this time. Which was truly appreciated and made me feel taken care of. The next morning I was taken for my leak test, and once that was passed, I was given some ice chips, Water, gatorade and apple juice. Of course coming off from the liquid diet I went straight for the apple juice. It tasted like heaven, but my new stomach didn't really agree. The sugar content didn't settle well. So I backtracked to the water, took that slow, and had to take a sip of the Gatorade (not G2) every 30 minutes or so to kind of work up to it. By late that night/early that morning, I was able to drink the Gatorade just fine! (btw Gas-X strips will be your best friends!) Wednesday we came here to the recovery condos, I began just been relaxing, sipping away at water and gatorade, working out the new timeline for the medicines that was prescribed. There was a very helpful packet outlining phases and what to have and not have. Luis was wonderful and took us out into TJ and we went to Caesar's where Josh (the boyfriend) had a good looking fish dish and I had the beef broth. It was delicious and I have yet to feel full, but have stopped myself in fear of taking in too much. While we were in the hospital, Roberto was great and always checking in on Josh and getting him food and drinks whenever he needed it. He was well taken care of even though he didn't want to leave my side. Dr. Illan came in and checked on my incisions the day before we moved to the recovery condo and to see how I was doing. Again, everyone was very attentive and caring, and just been great. I couldn't have asked for better attention and being put at ease. I'm so incredibly thankful and am now just easing forward and looking forward to healing and getting my life back on track now. Thank you to everyone! Dr. Illan, Bill, Stacy, Roberto, Luis, Rosa, Jessica, Denise, and every other doctor, nurse, or staff member who's played a hand in this and helped me reach this goal and start a new life.

Surgery is 3 weeks away- starting to freak out a little
BostonWLKC replied to MN_Meg770's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Mine was and is uneventful - I think we hear other stories BC quite frankly it’s probably boring hear how great it’s going v seeking advice when things are going well. As for food— Matty is tight- things change which is great. I don’t crave foods anymore . Once you’ve established good eating habits things are great. Other than foamies once or twice in the early weeks - nothing to write home about. Have never thrown up etc You’ll be ok! -
I hear you, I'm new here myself and regularly find myself biting my tongue.. I don't know why but that kind of thing always toasts my Cookies, probably bc I hate seeing it in the real world let alone in a "support forum" Normally I just scroll on by .. and repeat this mantra "haters gonna hate, naysayers gonna nay say" I don't know why but that saying always makes me giggle again..try it out

Lap band removal or revision
bonjovigirl posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So, I recently learned my band slipped and needs to be removed. I've been banded about 3 years and while i initially lost about 40 lbs, I've been pretty much the same for the last year or so. My current surgeon only does removals, no revisions. I'm pretty worried about having it removed bc I've read so many articles saying you will gain the weight back once it's out. I do know of another surgeon in the area who will revise to a gastric bypass. My question is, before I consider changing doctors, do you think they'd be willing to do a bypass on me if I'm not morbidly obese right now? My bmi is 32 with an underlying condition of sleep apnea. Has anyone had a similar experience? -
Hi all I had a gastric bypass on 28th January 2012 I've lost 65lbs so far but feel totally miserable. Getting fed up of not being able to eat much expect crackerbreads without feeling sick . Feeling very low when I see everyone being able to go out for meals with there partners and enjoying life when I'm stuck in this life now I don't regret the surgery because the weight loss is fantastic, just feels that my life has come to a halt

any of you with BC/BS federal standard ever have problems with them paying for the surgery after saying it was approved? right now they are telling me i'm approved, it will be $300 for hospital, and 15% up to $5,000 (which it shouldn't be anywhere near that) then it's 100% covered. BUT...i know when they approved shots for my premature baby 2 years ago to have RSV shots that where CRAZY expensive, AFTER the 6 months/6 shots were given, BC/BS took the money BACK from the pharmacy the shots were from, and told US we owed them the money.....at the sum of $24,000!!! for SIX shots! we fought the charges, did the appeal, they still denied paying it, then we went throught the next step before they FINALLY decided to cover it! i have this little fear in my head of this happening...not enough to make me cancel my BAND date of 3/3/09 though! LOL it will be worth every penny if we ended up paying for it, but i was wondering if any of you had to fight to have it paid after getting a pre-certification approval? thanks!

Oh, my Lord....I ONCE (and I emphasize ONCE) flew on a foreign airline that shall go unnamed (not even a third world country), and I wanted to kiss the ground when we landed. I swore NEVER to repeat that experience. Overhead storage doors flew open and banged up and down throughout the flight. The FAs would shut them and they would just pop open again. The whole plane shuddered like it would fall apart from metal fatigue at any moment. The tray tables didn't work, seats didn't recline....it was AWFUL. Worst of all, I couldn't understand the announcements. I told the friend who was traveling with me, "For all we know, they could be telling us 'The plane is crashing; bend over and kiss your big, over-fed American asses goodbye'."

Sorry but yes I have another insurance question
kaninag replied to kaninag's topic in Insurance & Financing
The anticipation is killing me!!! I can finally submit my request for the surgery in 10 DAYS!! So, I call the surgeons office today to make sure they had everything..and was talking and she said yeah the surgeon could do the operation this month but that most likely BCBS wont approve it before the end of the year bc they know I will have to pay a deductible come January...and then I will also have to pay 20% this really bites!!!!!!! -
Help I went in for my initial consultation and wanted the Gastric Sleeve the doctor suggested the Duodenal switch surgery
shedo82773 replied to BigJohn58's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You said at first that you were leaning towards the Sleeve, but your Dr recommended the DS. Then you said if it didn't work out you could go back for another WLS. I would strongly think hard on that. It isn't easy to get revisions approved and sometimes they can even do the surgery. Now I will try to explain why I feel this way. It might be a long but here goes....My hubby had the Lap Band for 13 years, they punctured the port and he had to go back to surgery. Then like I said 13 years out it malfunctioned. BTW he did lose 100#'s but he is a heavy big guy. Sept of 2013 he went in for a revision from the band to a RNY. When they got in there the band had eroded into his liver. There was too much bleeding and scar tissue so they backed out. No WLS for him. They removed the band and his gallbladder then told us in 3 months they would redo his WLS. NOT!! He developed abscesses and was deathly sick for 9 months 3 of them he doesn't remember. After he healed up we went back to the Surgeon but was turned away and called a problem child!! But he did get a reference to OREGON HEALTH AND UNIVERSITY in Portland, Oregon. Again, he was told to lose 25#'s and get his A1C down to a 7 or 8. (3 month blood sugars) he couldn't do both because if his A1C was down his weight was up, the other way around weight down BS up. So we went into debt and went to Juarez, Mexico. When they got in there his whole right side was solid scar tissue then again no RNY, they did the Sleeve. Now he has lost 60#'s but you know how we all say this Surgery saved our lives? Well, he has Cancer on his Kidney and was told that he couldn't have anything done until he loses 150#'s. He now still has 90#'s to go. The Sleeve just doesn't seem to have enough restriction. I know others have great results but it isn't happening for him. All of this and he might still lose his life!!! This is why I say it doesn't always happen to have more WLS. I would really think hard on what surgery I had and go for the one that will give you all of the results that you want and need!! Just my thoughts. Good Luck -

Thanks for letting me vent... It's getting harder each day. I really don't wanna say it but here it goes..... Today I went to get my nails done like I do every 2 weeks. It's bit easy finding parking but I find even if I have to walk 3 blocks. Well I noticed the gas was less then half & he (hubby) had fill it up to half. I came home between 2:30-3 pm... I went to asked him about the gas but didn't know his brother came to visit (basement). He explain must have been that he took the long way home. I got over it... Took my middle 4 year old to get my eye brows done & go get ice cream at the market & chicken gizzards at the Chinese for hubby. I'm home kids been fed thanks to my 15 year old. We all took a nap. My room gets hot so I was in panties when suddenly hubby smack me real hard on my butt. I woke up! He said why I'm showing my kids my butt. I cover my self but it was hot so I under he comes again I cover my self he said why I'm showing my body if I'm not giving him any. He then started saying how he should smack me on my face. I have the nerves to ask him about the gas when I should had asked the guy I was f---ing with the least he could have done was put gas since I'm giving him free p---y. I was shocked!!! He kept saying how I came home at 6pm when he wasn't even home. Marriage going down down down the drain..... I don't know why I asked about the gas. I started all this argument. Now he wants to hit me. I get accuse for going to therapy my nails the market dietician. I must be the biggest slut my p---y must be made out of gold that everyone wants it.

Some facts: -Over 12 million (not 5 million) have lost their insurance coverage due to Obamacare -Over 7 million will remain uninsured because they don't make enough to qualify for the tax credit but make too much to qualify for Medicaid. -Obamcare doesn't only have minimum care standards but maximum. All policies must not only meet minimum standards but they can not exceed the care offered either. If an insurance carrier offers too little or too much, they are fined heavily. -The average insurance cost increase is 41% due to Obamacare. The worst is yet to come: "In 2010, the Health and Human Services Department estimated that 40% to 67% of individual plans would eventually lose their "grandfathered" status, which only was conferred if a plan was purchased before the health care law was approved in 2010." The insurance increases and cancellations ARE because of Obamacare and Obama himself freely admits it. Obama's sorry excuse for an apology for all the loss of policies and idea of fixing it? He gave them a 1 year reprieve. That's it. And that does nothing for policies already canceled. http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/politics/obama-obamacare-apology/ http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2013/11/04/49-state-analysis-obamacare-to-increase-individual-market-premiums-by-avg-of-41-subsidies-flow-to-elderly/ Of course, I have been encouraging everyone who is still drinking the Obamacare Koolaid to read the actual bill. Yes, it's over 1000 pages long. Yes, it took me months but I did read it entirely. But, if you read it and get the facts versus the media bytes being fed to everyone, you'll see the horrible truth for yourself.

I copied and pasted, below, some of my early posts from the first few months after band surgery. I was so enthusiastic and on board with my new lifestyle. I was fully committed to learning everything I needed to know in order to succeed. I did not want to hear anything from anyone who was saying their band didn't work out. There were people who posted that they followed band rules and lost their band due to slips, erosion or esophageal dilation. I countered that very few complications are band caused. I suggested that perhaps they over ate, ate too fast...you get the picture. I was wrong to do that. It's true that early in our band journey we NEED to hear positive reinforcement that we made the "right" decision. That's why you won't see me post negative information on a post from someone who is doing well, newly banded or had decided to band and isn't asking for help deciding. If I posted in a way that seemed insensitive or overtly negative anywhere but on the complications forum, I apologize. I try to avoid that, but I'm human. I believed, as many of you do, that if I did all the right things, I'd keep my band for the rest of my life. I cannot convey the disappointment and even grief I'm feeling over the impending loss of my band. I'm also feeling a lot of anxiety about post removal. That might be bleeding thru in my posts. I'm in constant discomfort, unable to eat much of anything and generally not feeling very well at the moment. My point in this post is to encourage everyone who has WLS to listen, sympathize and file away posts about band complications. As I've stated in more than one post, the information might help you save your band one day. I don't want to scare anyone. I just want to share my experience within a community that might benefit from it one day. Don't be afraid to read my message. It can't hurt you. This was 2 months post op: Tonight I am going to a play with friends...I subscribe and we go out about every two months Nov-July. Yesterday I figured I should try on some of my smaller (size 24) clothes to see what I should wear. NONE OF THEM FIT! THEY ARE ALL TOO BIG! I am between a 20-22 so all the 24-26 and 3x are going to the donation pile or to my ebay collection. I went to the Talbot's outlet and bought two pairs of 22 WP shorts, very nice for $27 including tax. I now have one pair of jeans, a pair of capris and two shorts that I can wear. We always go to Maui in October and was trying on my dresses that I take with me and got into some of my Blue Ginger dresses I haven't been able to wear for a long time...some of the others are way too big.... Any way enough rambling on! Happy day for me! My first fill: I got my first fill today and it went very well...no pain and so far so good with water. I lost 5 lb in almost 5 weeks and due to travel plans in September and October opted to go ahead and get it now. My surgeon's office does them under flouro and it took about 10 min to do...port was flat on the abdominal wall and very easy to access. It did feel weird as she was numbing me up, but other than that couldn't feel it. I am hoping to up my loss to about 1.75 lb per week or 7-8 lbs per month with this fill... whew...glad to have that under my belt! A post on accountability: This morning it occurred to me that I have not lost any weight since the 30th of August. My first impulse was to post something on the forum regarding a stall, frustrated, etc, but then I got to thinking about it HONESTLY. I have not logged my food since the middle of July! I looked back and I remember thinking that this is so easy, I don't have to log every bite! WRONG! I lost consistently (even without a fill) 1-1.5 lbs per week while logging. Since I stopped logging I have lost a total of 6 lbs in 6 weeks, but nothing for the last two weeks. I don't think I am eating as much as I am burning, but how do I know??? This could be the 20% stall, but without documentation of my intake, I cannot really tell. My highest weight was 290 about 2 years ago. 20% of 290 is 58 and I am down 51 lbs from that weight so it is close enough to be called that, but most likely it is what I am eating, rather than how much. I have been eating more carbs... There have been numerous social events, so I have been drinking a bit of wine... And I have had some dessert... here and there... So now I recommit to journalling my food intake so I can assess why I am stalled and what to do to change it WITH SOME CERTAINTY.... I have lost an inch or so since the stall started, so it isn't really a stall, but a great opportunity to refocus my efforts towards meeting my goal of 1.5 lbs per week on average. I do have restriction and I need to do a better job of utilizing it to my advantage. Me, defending the band: Many folks who are anti-band will use a study that was published in 2003 and followed lap-band patients from 1997-2002...that would be like car and driver only reviewing cars made from 1920-1970 and holding them to today's standards of road-worthiness... The bands in use today are much more "user-friendly" and the surgeons who "install" them know a lot more about the causes of complications like those cited in the early study and MOST complications are caused by overstuffing the pouch and eating around the band (grazing, sliders etc) as well as over zealous docs who overfill bands. Go to the WLS failure forum, complications forum or regrets forum and read about the issues the people who have chosen many different surgeries experience, then you can be satisfied with your decision, whatever it may be. I also question why certain individuals feel the need to hang out here and tout their surgery. If they were as knowledgeable as they claim, they would be publishing a book on their surgery, pointing out the benefits vs the risks, and it would speak for itself. Here is an example of a study on VSG and it's failure rate...I found this doing a quick search and now it is out there and will be quoted by the VSG haters to support their position.... The exact failure rate of sleeve gastrectomy is unknown. Using the Spanish National Registry for bariatric surgery, Sanchez-Santos et al[7] reviewed 540 patients who had undergone SG either as a primary or staged procedure over a six-year period. The authors reported excellent overall outcomes; however, 15 percent of the subjects were considered failures based on weight recidivism in the first three years, with 3.3 percent of patients submitting to a second bariatric procedure. Younger age, lower body mass index (BMI), and thinner bougie size were attributed to improved sustainable outcomes. Similarly, Himpens, in an article by Deitel et al,[8] presented his early five-year results after sleeve gastrectomy at the First International Consensus Summit for Sleeve Gastrectomy in 2007. In 46 such patients, he reported a disappointing 37 and 23 percent inadequate weight loss and second procedure rates, respectively. More recent unpublished presentations by Himpens indicate failure rates as high as 30 percent in five years.[9] Studying the Austrian experience with SG as a stand-alone operation, Felberbauer et al[10] reported a seven-percent failure rate at three years based on a cutoff of 25 percent excess weight loss (EWL). Applying the traditional 50-percent EWL criteria, the failure rate increased to 25 percent.[10] Me supporting a struggling poster: Good for you Tanya....that is why the forums are here, to share and hopefully keep us from getting too complacent and not utilizing our chosen tool. The side note that I have been meaning to post since the day after I wrote this is that though I haven't lost pounds, I have lost a full size, so it isn't about just the weight. Perhaps it is time for a fill or a talk with your nutritionist to help you to get back on track... Congratulations on your recommittal and I will look for you to post your success!! This was me the first year. I was afraid to hear what might go wrong, just like many others. This is a support site for ALL banded people, not just those who don't have complications. Seeing the words can't hurt you, but ignoring signs of trouble can. Just an FYI to those who keep calling me a "basher", "full of bs as usual", "100% incorrect"...every time you call me a name, I will respond politely. I will also continue to post. I don't back down when attacked, but I refuse to attack back.

When you woke up from anesthesia.....
TulipStar replied to marieze's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have only been under twice in my life (within the last 4 years both times) and it always goes like this: I wake up, I am crying tears and I feel pain and the nurse asks why I am crying , but I can't really speak bc my throat is so dry. I choke out an "ouch" and they know why. Then when I am in recovery it is amazing how I am aware of everything going on and can hear everything, but I feel like I am in a coma. My last surgery (not lapband), the nurses couldn't figure out what kind of surgery I had done, so they were standing there in front of me, talking about me, where to put me, what meds should they give me, etc and I could hear everything, but couldn't speak up or open my eyes. It was quite frightening!!
