How Have Your Tastes Changed Since Surgery?
Alex Brecher posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
A lot of WLS patients find their tastes change after WLS. Sometimes it’s too bad, like not liking healthy foods like chicken or salad anymore. Sometimes it’s a good thing, like when you don’t like greasy foods anymore. Sometimes it’s a direct result of surgery, like being intolerant to super sweet foods after gastric bypass or not liking the taste of Water anymore after the sleeve. Sometimes it’s the result of getting used to a new set of foods that you first FORCE yourself to eat, and later actually enjoy more than the junk food you used to eat. Like many lap-band patients, I didn’t notice any immediate changes in my tastes post-op, but my tastes have definitely changed in the years since surgery! Now, I like healthy foods, and don’t automatically prefer high-calorie sugary or fried foods. I like yogurt, and oatmeal, and fruit, and vegetables, and prefer unprocessed foods. What about you? Have your tastes changed since surgery? In which ways?- 10 replies

Considering sleeve to bypass conversion
ortega07 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was sleeved 12/27/13 I'm down roughly 40 lbs and need to get rid of 60 more. My sleeve is not stretched due to scar tissue distorting the shape of the sleeve. My options : Re sleeve Or Bypass Totally confused! Please any words of wisdom appreciated! When I went for the sleeve it was easy to find many positive stories. The bypass procedure seems riskier. Help! -

If you are a Low carb person --- the 5 day pouch is the way to go. I have also done it 2x and it works like a charm. I understand what you said about gaining weight with all the stress and changes. I guess that's how we all developed our weight problem in the first place --- by emotional eating. However, you also have to remember how good you were in losing the weight. It took a LOT of work and focus on your part to pull that off. You have proved to yourself that you CAN do it. It's also really important that you try not to yo-yo. My fear for you is that you could hurt your body or risk losing your band. The only thing I can advise is that you try to use the 5-day pouch to get back on the track. If you do and you lose it all and you are able to stay within a good range then you will be doing really good. If you find that you can not lose the weight or if you do a major regain again after losing again, it may be that the bypass would be a better choice for you. But --- I do think you should try making the band work for you before going that route. Best of luck to you. Don't beat-up on yourself. That will only make it worse. The most important thing is that we keep learning and keep trying until we succeed.

I was banded November 2009. I quickly lost 150 pounds. I am now 2 years out, I have gained all my weight back and am severly depressed. While I still eat smaller quantities, I have gone back to my old patterns of eating. Has my pouch stretched? Do I need to have surgery againg? Wht do I do? I am so discouraged and ashamed of myself. How many people can fail at weight loss surgery? Please give me some advice. Thanks. Terri....Colorado

Boy can I relate. I had a doctor who told me to try yoga instead LOL 335 pound woman doing yoga. Guess what i found me a new doctor! That was back in November 2007. This new doctor had helped me thru all the processes and just got approved for surgery for July 1st. But my advice is go in there with your research and also make list of all those diets you failed at and have a heart to heart with the doc.

Anyone in Killeen/Fort Hood area? Who did you use?
yvonne74 replied to yvonne74's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
It was Dr. young! He got up and walked out of our appointment with him. I have seen him 3 times... November, they lost my record so only thing proving that I was there was a Dr's note for my work, they were suppose to call me back to schedule follow-up, never did... 2nd meeting, he apologized for dropping the ball, order tests, said I will call you as soon as I get the results back, he never did. I called nurse, no response. .. went back to my PCM for another issue (diagnosised ventral hernia).. 3rd meeting, I asked him why he never called me with the test results, he again apologized but said "Its not like I was doing it on purpose." Well, no but it happened and this has gotten me no where.. He refused to touch my hernia while doing other surgery.. I asked why? (Really didn't know) He got up and walked out saying "Go see someone else".. The nurse, my husband and I all dropped our jaws in shock. Few minutes later, he said "I put in a referral for another Dr. go see him" (Turned to nurse and told her to leave).. I asked to speak to someone, she went to get Head nurse.. WHile waiting for Head nurse, Dr. Young walked by and said "Are you waiting to talk to someone?" Yes, I am .. He points to the exit and says "Patient Advocate is that way".. I tell him that nurse said I needed to talk to Head nurse first.. He again points to exit and says, "I said go that way to patient advocate".. -
Revisions...Lap to RYN
heather5565 replied to toma0526's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
There are far too many of us from "band to bypass" I did have the band but had it removed 5 yrs ago because for 3 years my body was rejecting it. I had RNY a little over 5 weeks ago and doing great. No regrets. (Well, except not going with the bypass from the very get-go) Good luck to you and hope all goes well! -

Any December OCC patients?
Derbymama21 replied to Derbymama21's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
When I called back in June, she said I could get in in July. But I had to wait until my season was over. I actually just booked Thursday for November 25th. I was told to go at the beginning of the week to avoid longer wait times the day of surgery. Not sure if its a real concern or not. I have to renew my passport aswell, lol. I should get on that. -
Anyone Had Dumping Syndrome?
Rootman replied to getnsknyntx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends on what you call "dumping". From what I understand dumping is the stomach pushing food out into the small intestine when it's not properly treated with acid and begun to break down, the result is the small intestine spasming and objecting to the raw food, typically either accompanied by a severe nausea or diarrhea. It is MORE common in those getting RNY bypass surgeries as they no linger have a functioning pyloric valve in their functioning digestive tract. The typical reason for dumping is eating too much, too fast or eating too rich a food. Truth be told ANYONE regardless of WLS or not, and if you think back you probably have had it before too, you remember that meal that just made you sick right away and had diarrhea soon afterward? That was probably dumping. It is casued by the pyloric valve opening up before the food was ready to be passed to the small intestine. Perhaps it WAS eating to fast and a mechanical misfunction or somehow the valve got the wrong signal and opened too soon, or a food that sat wrong with you and made it open. IF you do experience it it seems to lessen after 6 months or so poast-op, in a year you may never have it again, then again get a case of stupids and eat too much too fast and you could most definatly have it many years post-op. -

I'm still pre op for bypass so I have no nuggets of wisdom to offer. Just wanted to welcome you and say how sorry I am that you've had such a difficult experience. I hope the revision gives you the results and healthier life you are seeking. Good luck and hang in there. You're young and have a lot of good living in front of you! -
Revisions...Lap to RYN
kissalvoe replied to toma0526's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was supposed to have a revision done yesterday but they had to abort my RNY surgery after removal of the bags because it eroded my stomach so now I have to wait 3 months, hope I heal and hope the insurance will cover another go at it before I can get the bypass. I had my band placed in 2010 and gained all 80 pounds I lost right back. -
I will be 1 year out in July 2013.. Had surgery in Mexico with Dr Garcia.. Yes I did have issues but have lost over 70lbs.. This is the smallest I have ever been.. It feels so good to buy clothes ! I still have issues with reflux, I take 1 prolosec in am & 1 in pm.. My insurance has covered all my after care, including 2 hospital stays for a C Diff infection. Also I still struggle with food. Sometimes difficult to eat with the reflux. One of my docs wanted to convert my sleeve to a bypass but I dont want to do anymore surgery.. I was suposed to have another EGD last Fall with a monitor placed for 2 days but I didnt want to do anything at that time.. My C Diff finally went away in December. Ok, so Im actually going to try & attach pics.. One is of me & my son from October 2011, I probably weighed 185.. The other 2 were taken a few days ago at 129 lbs! I never liked to take pics before so it feels weird to take them now.. Good luck to all in their weight loss journey!!

Sleeve to MGB Revision/ Resleeve & Bypass or Just Bypass
NuHorizons posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi I'm researching getting a revision from a VSG to a MGB. I was sleeved in July 2010. I never experienced the "Honeymoon phase" and my weight loss was slow from the beginning. I was able to lose 80 lbs over two years with dieting and vigorous exercise, but now my weight is rapidly creeping back up. I have a few questions for those who went from a sleeve to a Mini Gastric Bypass. Did your surgeon resleeve you and then bypassed you or did he/she bypass you only. I watched a few revision videos from Dr. Rutledge and he doesn't recommend resleeving unless the sleeve is very large or deformed due to the increased risk of complications when resleeving. Are you satisfied with the outcome of the MGB and would you recommend your Surgeon? Also, if you can please list your Surgeon's name I would appreciate it. Thanks -
Reaching out to Bandsters with more experience...
pelhamlisa replied to sherilynn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sherilynn, I was banded November 13 so I am not very experienced but I do know what you are talking about with the burping. It was a couple of weeks before I could actually burp. But boy, when I did! It was great. I have noticed that after my fills I could not burp for a few days afterwards. I have not experienced the pins and needles sensation you are describing. So I do not know what to tell you on that one! To this day I do not get "hungry" like I did before being banded. I do experience being hungry but it is not the same as before. I just know I should eat. My stomach will growl, very loudly. It is still hard not to eat like I did before the band, also. I am still battling eating fast. BIG MISTAKE, eating to fast. And not chewing food well enough and taking small bites. The nurse at my doctor's office told me to east like a 3-year-old. It is still extremely hard to do that. Old habits are hard to break. Each day is a new adventure and I would not change having the surgery. I still mourn food. It was like my best friend!!! But hey, I am down 30 pounds and under 200 pounds for the first time in forever!!!! It has been worth my normal being changed! Good luck on your journey!!! -
Reaching out to Bandsters with more experience...
sherilynn posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm just 8 days out. I know it was surgery, but nothing like a bypass would have been. I am very uncomfortable; still can't get a right position in the night to sleep through, without an Ambien. I feel like I'm getting some headaches, that can be due to the cold I've seemed to have caught right after surgery. My major complaint is that I don't feel 'normal', or 'good'. There are so many new feelings I'm dealing with - and I think for the most part I'm afraid they're going to stay with me. For instance, the way I burp is different, it's held back, and followed by a pain that feels like 'pricks'. In my stomach, I feel like it's pins and needles of sorts. I kind of expected to have the band, eat until full then empty - and feel hunger again. I haven't felt any hunger in over a week. HEHE - funny I should be complaining about that! Could this be the 'normal' that I will now be facing? Will I always have this 'pins and needles' feeling in my tummy? I'd kill to let out a good strong belch. I'm confusing gas with nausea. Heck, I think it's time I might have to get to the shrink...:faint: -
Here's FYI for those that are interested! Advantages and Disadvantages of Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Advantages Reduces stomach capacity but tends to allow the stomach to function normally so most food items can be consumed, albeit in small amounts. Eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces the hormones that stimulates hunger (Ghrelin). Dumping syndrome is avoided or minimized because the pylorus is preserved. Minimizes the chance of an ulcer occurring. By avoiding the intestinal bypass, almost eliminates the chance of intestinal obstruction (blockage), marginal ulcers, anemia, osteoporosis, Protein deficiency and Vitamin deficiency. Very effective as a first stage procedure for high BMI patients (BMI > 55 kg/m2). Limited results appear promising as a single stage procedure for low BMI patients (BMI 30-50 kg/m2). Appealing option for people who are concerned about the complications of intestinal bypass procedures or who have existing anemia, Crohn’s disease and numerous other conditions that make them too high risk for intestinal bypass procedures. Appealing option for people who are concerned about the foreign body aspect of Banding procedures. Can be done laparoscopically in patients weighing over 500 pounds, thereby providing all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery: fewer wound and lung problems, less pain, and faster recovery. Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Disadvantages Potential for inadequate weight loss or weight regain. While this is true for all procedures, it is theoretically more possible with procedures that do not have an intestinal bypass. Higher BMI patients will most likely need to have a second stage procedure later to help lose the rest of the weight. Remember, two stages may ultimately be safer and more effective than one operation for high BMI patients. This is an active point of discussion for bariatric surgeons. Soft calories such as ice cream, milk shakes, etc can be absorbed and may slow weight loss. This procedure does involve stomach stapling and therefore leaks and other complications related to stapling may occur. Because the stomach is removed, it is not reversible. It can be converted to almost any other weight loss procedure. Considered investigational by some surgeons and insurance companies. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com

Hi! I just had bypass last tuesday. Wondering if there is anyone out there in the Mobile, Alabama area?

Bypass means more invasive surgery and lifetime malnutrition/supplements. Gastric sleeve is a simple surgery--they just make your stomach radically smaller, and remove the part that causes the hunger hormone.

Gastric sleeve to bypass revision?
Lynn77 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello all, New to the forum here. I had a gastric sleeve done back in 2012, the first 2 years were great and I was happy with my weight loss. After that, for the past few years I've been putting weight back on, so far nearly 50 lbs. I am seriously considering going to Mexico for the sleeve to bypass revision. Has anyone else had this surgery? What was your experience? Were there any hidden fees for revision surgery? Thanks all! -
Don't have a clue what to do????????????
genepha replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Kathy, I hope you make the decision that is best for you and your body. I also have the band and it needs to come out. My band is almost 10 years old so instead of having my band completely taken out, my dr. is going to replace it with a new band (depending on the shape my stomach is in once he's in there) but I'm keeping my new port and tubing and I'm either going to have a gastric plication or the sleeve. I haven't decided which way to go yet either. When I spoke with my band dr. he normally recommends the bypass but I'm unable to have that plus I wouldn't get it anyway if I could (I think). He doesn't recommend the sleeve and doesn't do many of them mainly because he thinks the leak rate is too high, even though he is a very skilled surgeon he doesn't like the sleeve. I went to a different bariatric dr. who is also very well-known in southern Cali and skilled and he also doesn't really recommend the sleeve. So now I'm really confused. I was leaning towards the sleeve but now that I know about the gastric plication, I am leaning more towards that. My main concern with the plication is that there is no long term data. The longest term data I could find was between 3-5 years out. I was very happy with my band until about 7 years out, so I'm not real comfortable with the limited amount of information as my own data would show good progress at 3-5 years out. Anyway - do lots of research, ask lots of questions and good luck to you. genepha -
Question about this new option my sister as pointed me to
Bryn replied to Heide's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If I remember correctly I read somewhere that the sleeve procedure was a great option for WLS for those with Crohn's disease, and i think anemia versus gastric bypass and the band. but double check with a doctor!!
