Revision, anyone?
stacielynntate replied to irisheyesrsmylng 1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am also nervous on the risk for revision but like you feel the benefits outweigh them. I'm just praying my dr can do the surgery all in one and I dint require 2 depending in what he finds out from the band once he gets in there. -
Revision, anyone?
thesuse2000 replied to irisheyesrsmylng 1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi there - I'm getting band to sleeve revision surgery on June 16th. No one can (or should) tell you not to worry about complications - there are risks for all sleevers, but unfortunately the risk is higher for us revisioners. We have scar tissue that has to be removed, along with the band, and generally the longer the surgery the higher risk of complications. I'm worried about this, but I think that the benefits clearly outweigh the risks (for me anyway). I know that I can't maintain a healthy weight on my own, and my risk for a range of serious health issues will just increase over the years. Statistically, my longterm outcome looks much better with surgery than without - but of course any of us could land on the wrong side of those statistics and be the one in hundreds/thousands that has a really bad outcome. Just like - I could have a heart attack next year if I don't do it. All we can do is look at the evidence and make the best choice we can. I wish you the best! -
9 months out-VSG Fundus Complications
Cia2020 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm 9 months out from VSG, saw the bariatric clinic follow up staff, and am so GRR now. I never had that "I'm never hungry" feeling once I recovered from the surgery but shrugged it off. I could drink 2 oz. fluids at once literally the day of surgery so I was like... OK, cool. Weight loss was slow despite being diet compliant and exercising, stopped at 25 pounds after 3 months, then gained 10 back after a foot injury (off again since getting back to my daily 5k jog). I've been having reflux for ages despite avoiding trigger foods/drinks and I get hiccups 20+ times a day regardless of how I'm eating, drinking, or not doing either. So they referred me back to the surgeon's office. Last week I had an upper GI study. The radiology report says I have mild decreased lower esophageal motility and mild outpouching at the fundus... um, I shouldn't HAVE a fundus after gastric sleeve. The weakened esophageal muscles explains the fluid that backs up when I drink sometimes, especially if not sitting straight up or standing, and the chest lock I feel when eating dryer foods or meats. I'm confused about the fundus. Is the radiologist mistaken and unfamiliar with VSG anatomy? Did the surgeon leave part of my fundus? The surgeon's office is awful at communicating so I'm in limbo. They didn't even call me before ordering the upper GI, they just had the radiology department call to schedule me without notice. All I can think about is where I go from here. Meds for the reflux and live with the hiccups? Revision surgery for the reflux and basically start over (the big GRR)? Anyone else have anything similar like a retained fundus, outpouching, or GERD with esophageal motility disorders like weakened muscles after VSG surgery?- 2 replies

Slower weight loss second time around?
WLSResources/ClothingExch replied to PaulStephens1975's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Y'know, folks, a slower rate of weight loss may be a letdown, but thinking about it is known in the trade as 'maladaptive cognition.' In real-life terms, it means thinking things that aren't good to think. Lost weight is lost weight. Would you even be losing at the slower rate without the revision to sleeve? I'm not one of you and don't know if I will be. Having lost 115 in 15 (?) months at the start, I then regained about 65-70, letting an event derail me, not because of band failure. I'm finally seeing the NP on Monday (last time was about two years ago), positive that I have dilation, but won't know until the esophagram about erosion. In short, I'm thinking revision is what I'll need. I have yet to find out if my medical plan will cover it. I'd go for sleeve and would have to get past my own biases against it. With luck, at least some of he biases are based on ignorance of the procedure. Anyway, I really stopped in primarily to say that lost weight is lost weight. -
Slower weight loss second time around?
KeepCalm replied to PaulStephens1975's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a little confused - did you lose 100lbs and that wasn't a typo or did you lose 4 and it was a typo? I'm a revision too, and I weighed 255 on surgery - currently at 244 and I'm 4 weeks out... its been slow but its coming off. -
Those are common quotes against the band. Here are some common quotes against the sleeve I found in a few minutes with Google: The stomach remaining after your sleeve gastrectomy WILL gradually stretch and permit larger meals. VSG is not reversible, and quite often, additional weight loss surgery is performed some time later after gastric sleeve. One study comparing gastric sleeve to gastric banding that shows the gastric sleeve to be about as effective as the lap band at 1 and 3 years following surgery. Less than 1000 patients with VSG have been studied and we really don't know what happens beyond 3 years! A portion of your stomach is cut out using a stapling device and then the surgeon sews over the staple line to try to prevent leaks. However, this is not fool proof. If your stomach leaks or there is a small perforation, it could cause a condition called peritonitis, which is life threatening. These metal staples stay in your body forever, much like the silicon lap band. Although thought to be safer than gastric bypass, truth be known, the safety of this procedure has NOT YET been established because it is very new. Of concern is the amount of stomach removed. Most surgeons are now removing and throwing out, 90-95 percent of the stomach and since the stomach is a critical digestive organ, this might cause some Vitamin deficiencies as well as Protein deficiencies. Vertical sleeve gastrectomy patients are told they have "fully functional stomachs" but since the stomach is now only 1-2 oz, this is highly UNLIKELY. In truth, all that is left from their stomach is 1-2 oz pouch which is the same size as a gastric bypass patient except the gastric bypass patient can have their stomach reconnected if there are problems. A percentage of patients get severe reflux... not only of acid but of bile as well. The risk of death with the gastric sleeve is likely considerably less than the bypass but higher than with the adjustable lap band. In the long term, you may be in higher risk for a herniated stomach or distention of the esophagus. Some patients have complained that the tiny part of the stomach left can "twist" Because of most of the stomach being cut away, the digestion of protein and vitamin B12 may be compromised. This is due to less stomach acid and also possibly a lower amount of "intrinsic factor" being produced. You may have to take vitamin B12 shots. - should check levels often. Unlike the lap band, the amount of restriction is not adjustable. If you need a revision, it's another risky surgery. Again, all I'm saying is that all surgery has risks, what is the right choice for one person may not be the right choice for another, and that choosing a good doctor is critical.

Yes, I had my revision on Monday Nov 14th. This isn't as easy as the Sleeve and my incisions are bothering me more this time. I had a rough start in the hospital due to some complications but i think I'm getting much better. I'm supposd to go to work on Tuesday but don't think I am quite up to it yet. Thanksgiving was difficult.... I felt so left out, and hungry but I guess its worth it. I had the surgery to cure my severe GERD and it seems to have helped. Hope everyone else is doing well. Let me know when we get our own page.So good to hear you are doing well !!! I asked Alex 3 times for the forum.but no word yet. I'll keep you guys posted as soon as I get my surgery date. Submitted already just waiting for Cigna approval. My gerd is still out of control but I'm feeling hopeful!!! Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App -

Hello, I've also gotten a revision from sleeve to bypass. How much weight loss is expected when doing a revision? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Yes it’s the same insurance company. They have a revision clause for failure but I have to prove that failure wasn’t due to not following diet and exercise as prescribed by my doctor.

Help just told need to replace or removw my lap band
onikenbai replied to cardshark's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Once you have one band out, the tendency is for subsequent bands to be problematic. If the first one is causing ulcers and infections, why wouldn't the second? I would consider revising to a sleeve or an RNY. My band is coming out soon and I couldn't be happier. It was an $18K nightmare from day 1. -
Lap Band or Sleeve?????
ElfiePoo replied to slm2007's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The band is less invasive than the sleeve...but to be honest, that's about all the good I can say for it at this point after my experience. With the sleeve, you start losing right away and drop a considerable amount of weight your first year because it does restrict how much you eat right from the start. With the band, it takes time to get to the right spot where it actually gets rid of the hunger and, for many of us, it never restricts how *much* we can eat. Also, the band seems to tighten and loosen on a daily basis making it a rollercoaster of joy (not) in knowing what foods are going to be a problem. Today I might be able to eat an egg...tomorrow, maybe not. I had the band put in 15 months ago. I'm getting ready to go back into surgery to get it taken out because since the day of surgery I've had persistent phrenic nerve pain (shoulder pain) from the band rubbing on my diaphragm. I plan on living without the band for a bit but if the hunger comes back and I can't control it, I'll go in for the sleeve revision. -
Do You Have A Lot Of Loose Skin After Losing Weight?
teachkdz0507 replied to AngieG0410's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Angie, I am a lapband revised sleeve and I DO have excess skin. I am wondering if age has anything to do with it. I do workout regularly and my tummy still looks nasty. I am very close to goal so it is no longer fat. It is just wrinkly looking. I plan to do a tummy tuck after I have been stabilized at goal weight. I will say that my tummy is the worst. I have been able to keep the rest under control with the exercise. I have met several in our face to face support group who have had to have additional work done after the weight is gone. Embrace the idea you are healthier and the weight is gone. Rejoice that your biggest problem is getting rid of excess skin! :-) Good luck! Smiles! -
Unfilled Band too Tight..frustration...
hockeymother replied to ms.lissa's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Same! I was over filled which cause me to get stuck so often that my band slipped. Chronic acid reflux is a sure sign of a slipped band. I had an X-ray, an upper GI and still my Dr said it was what I was eating. I finally begged him to look at it again and sure enough, a slipped band. He did a revision surgery 2 months ago and instant relief. Now I have to start all over but what a relief. There is nothing worse than constant stuck feeling, not being able to eat and still have acid reflux. -
Hi everyone, I’m having gastric bypass revision surgery on October 15th and have been doing my liquid diet. Aside from being constantly hangry which is its own version of suck I also feel like I’m in a brain fog. I feel like my brain is simply not processing things as it should. I’m also super irratible which I at least understand. The brain fog tho is really getting to me. Also for some reason I have slept through my alarm twice which I have never done before. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar. It’s making things difficult.

More deep thought about revision

Melissa, I live in Australia. Bit far away to travel for a revision for you -
Just wanted to touch base with everyone. I had my revision on the 11th and the first couple of days were ROUGH. I stayed an extra day in the hospital due to nausea. I figured out I was nauseous due to pain meds, so I'm just taking Tylenol and doing fine. Once my drain was removed most of the pain/discomfort was gone. I know everyone says that each day gets a little better and it's actually true. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

The port hurts for a while after surgery. You have to be careful. After a few months you won't notice it as much. It won't hurt to touch it. The more weight you lose, the more it'll stick out, and it depends on where your surgeon places it. I'm going to be a band to bypass revision in a few months due to band slippage and multiple complications.
