  1. I had got my sleeve done on Oct 7th. 1 week post op I lost a total of 6.5 pounds (in addition to the 10 I lost on pre-op diet). But since then, I haven't dropped a single ounce! I walk everyday and I'm still on the liquid diet and just so frustrated. If I have to drink another protein shake, I'll gag. Is this part of the whole 3 week stall????
  2. Stalls or plateaus are very normal with weight loss so you’re not failing. Frustrating, yes but not a sign of failure. Almost everyone experiences them. Literally thousands of posts about them here. The first one (yes first because you can experience a few along the way) usually occurs around the 3 week mark though sometimes they occur before then or after. A stall can last around 1-3 weeks. Stalls are a stress response. Your body thinks what the hell is going on here and shuts down. It uses the time to reassess your new needs (like what changes need to occur with your digestive hormones) as a result of the weight loss, changed caloric intake, surgery, etc. compare it with when you experience psychological or emotional stress and just want to shut the world out until you feel able to deal with the stress. Same for your body’s response to physical stress. Stick to your plan. Don’t stress your body more. The stall will break when your body is ready. Take some body measurements as sometimes, while the numbers on the scale don’t change, your measurements may. Though every plan and advice given is different, two plus hours a day of workouts is actually a lot this soon after surgery. Your body is still recovering and healing (lots of sutures and staples holding your digestive system together). Is your team aware of how much & what activities you’re doing? If not I’d check with them. Dr Matt Weiner (pound of Cure) is a great resource as is Dr John Pilcher. Check out their videos on You Tube (they have a lot so prepare to scroll). I‘ve included Dr Weiner’s on stalls as a start and to help alleviate your worries. He does podcasts too. Glad the vomiting has eased.
  3. Congrats! Welcome to the post-op club! I will be 2 years post-op next month. I can't believe how fast the time has flown! I am now at 132 pounds and feeling the best I have in years. To be honest, I have not had many issues so far, the most difficult one being my hemoglobin and ferritin levels were down to 8 and 5 respectively back in February. So my nutritionist said I needed to start iron (nature's way ultimate iron) that and along with iron infusions for 5 weeks brought me up to hemoglobin 13 and ferritin 22. To be fair, I've been anemic most of my life, but a gastric bypass makes iron harder to absorb as it is. I have a membership to the YMCA. I dance and I love Zumba and Pilates. I've also started Vinyasa Yoga. My biggest chunk of weight came off last March after a 3-week stall. I don't have dumping syndrome as much. I like to stay active and now that I have way more energy it is doable. It's been a year since I'm off of CPAP. Prediabetes gone, A1C at 5.5. Inflammation is nonexistent in my lab draws. I love buying smaller clothes and I love this new me. Maintenance has been fairly easy, I keep in mind that I never want to be obese again.

    Stalling

Yep, I'm 9 months post-op and may or may not just be coming out of about a 3-week stall. It's very normal and expected to start slowing down, stalling, and having small weight gains at this point. I hit a low of 170.2 toward the end of October, immediately bounced up a pound, and didn't drop below that low point until 3 days ago. Personally, I find that whenever I hit a new low after a little bit of a stall, especially if it involves a large one-day drop (I went from 170.8 to 169.0 in a day), I'll usually bounce around a little before seeing any steady declines. Most people continue losing weight until at least 12 months, and sometimes a little bit more until 18 or 24 months. But with a lot more stalls, especially the closer you get to a "normal" BMI. (I'm about 14 pounds away from not being considered overweight by the medical charts). The important thing is to develop a healthy eating and exercise routine that is sustainable no matter what the scale says. If you're doing what is reasonable and recommended, keep doing it. There's no need to change what isn't broken. On the other hand, if you know you've been straying from your good habits, focus on getting back to where you know you should be. Eating healthy foods in the correct portions on a regular schedule, moving your body throughout the week, getting the right amount of protein, taking vitamins, and drinking water are all things you will be doing for the rest of your life, even though at some point the scale will stop going down. The advice I am giving myself these days is to try to separate those good things I am doing from the number on the scale. Because for me, if I start seeing weight loss as a "reward" for "being good", it makes it harder to continue the good lifelong habits when that "reward" inevitably goes away. It also won't do you any favors in the long run if you try to introduce a bunch of things you know you will never be able to maintain just to get the scale moving faster. I might be able to drop a few pounds really fast if I went back to 500 calories per day or re-did my 2 week liquid diet, but I can't live like that forever, so it's a false victory. I think we all have to find the right balance of habits we can maintain fairly steadily for a lifetime and a healthy weight we can maintain without torturing ourselves. And remember that just because you hit the 12-month mark doesn't mean the game is over. You can always introduce improvements to your nutrition or your exercise that will result in slow and steady changes over time. You don't have to workout 5 days a week for 2 hours a day if that isn't your thing, but if you add some resistance training a few times per week or an extra walk after dinner, you will see those results down the road.

    3 Months Post-Op

Yayy congrats ! I’d heard of the 3 week stall but not the 3 month 😱 this explains so much !! I’m about 4 months post up and i’ve hit my first long stall : it’s been 4 weeks and no loss. Oh well i can’t complain i just take it one day at a time but that worry creeps on me sometimes Well done to everyone in this thread i get so happy when people describe all their personal NSVs !! My biggest one happened a few days ago: No more seatbelt extender on the plane I weirdly enough didn’t even expect it so it was an entire new (positive) shock when i got on the plane and just randomly realised i could fit comfortably in the seat and buckle the belt 😊
  6. Almost been a 3 week stall :C Hoping to kick it in gear and lose 10 lbs by 3/24.

i look at it this way... i am down 72lbs in 4 1/2 months... when have i EVER been able to say that??? NEVER... so if i am at a stall for a few weeks... then so be it, it wont be forever... So i am going to try to shake it up a bit, and do my "pre-op" diet for the next 2-3 days... keep strong - we will get through this together!!

I only lost 2lbs this week. Maybe it's because I wasn't drinking the water like I should. Need to flush out the FAT! I think our bodies are still out of whack and wondering what it should be doing. Drink drink drink....walk walk walk. :-)

Happened to me at just 2 weeks out. Nothing to fret over, your body is just readjusting. I noticed a big drop in the tape measure during that first stall, so try paying more attention to that than the scale :)

  10. Hey, Sleeve Sister! Just stopping by to check on you. I hope things are going well. I'm gearing up for the 3 week stall. eek! Take care!

  11. Hi there! I guess you could say I am dieting...sticking to protein first and trying to get in all my fluids each day. I keep my carbs around 30g per day.

I'm not exercising much and I'm sure if I would I'd be losing a little better...it's just so danged HOT. Sounds like you're in the dreaded 3 week stall...it happens to most of us but it will pass. Did you take measurements of yourself before surgery? It was nice to see the inches coming off even when the scale wasn't moving.

Also are you journaling what you eat everyday? That's been a tremendous help to me. I use Free Calorie Counter, Diet & Exercise Journal | MyFitnessPal.com to log everything everyday.

Oh and feel free to write me anytime!

    Encouragement

Ayay, This is NOT a diet. This is a lifestyle change. I don't know how far post-op you are, but I'm guessing you're in the 3-5 weeks category. If so, search here for the 3 week stall. Almost everyone goes through that stall and finds that the scale is standing still for a bit. Take your measurements now, so you have something to refer to later, pay attention to how your clothes are fitting as well. Are they looser? If you did take pre-op measurements, are you losing inches? I lost my first pants size during my 3 week stall. I put them on, zipped them up, and they fell to the ground! I'm not following any diet except: 70grams of Protein and 64 oz of Water per day. I don't track calories, carbs, or anything else. I have started adding in more "good" carbs because I've upped my exercise routine, but that's about the only time I worry about carbs. Stalls will happen, but they happen because your body needs the time to adjust to the changes. I shape-shifted in the last few months, losing a good bit of mass in my hips and thighs and developing muscle definition in my arms, tummy and thighs. In that same three months, I lost 10 pounds. Now my weight loss has started up again, but I imagine that I'll go through another shift in a month or so. The best advice I can offer you is this: Don't let the scale run your life. Weigh less often and concentrate on your protein and water goals. The weight will take care of itself. Add in some exercise, even if it's 5 minutes on the treadmill or exercise bike. Once it's part of your routine, you'll miss exercise when you don't do it. Good luck!

Please read the link in my sig. You are just going through the 3 week stall. It's perfectly normal. Do not panic. Just keep doing what you're doing. The stall will end soon.

    So Annoyed

It's called the 3 week stall. Basically, once you start a reduced calorie diet your body starts burning glycogen for fuel because it's the most accessible fuel source. For every pound of glycogen you burn, you will use 4 pounds of Water weight as well. This accounts for everyone's initial and easy weight loss when they start a diet or have WLS. Once your body realizes that this calorie deficit is going to continue past the point of using all your glycogen stores, then it starts to burn fat. But at the same time it must refill your glycogen stores, along with that water weight which keeps the glycogen soluble. So at this point you are burning fat but adding water weight. If the fat loss does not outpace the water gain your weight will stall, but you are still burning fat. Once the glycogen and water weight have been restored, you will see the scale start to move again.

    Weight Lost

Hi there! Most people lose weight very very fast during pre op diet and the first week or two following surgery. You should expect that to slow down drastically. For me I lose on average 3 lbs per week. The thing is, some weeks I don't lose anything and then the next I lose 4 or 5 lbs. As long as you are losing overall you are in good shape. Some people weigh every day and some people weigh weekly, monthly or only when they go for check ups. They do this to avoid the frustration of the scale. I weigh once a day religiously but I don't get stressed when the scale doesn't move. Most of the time you are still losing inches. There is also the dreaded 3 week stall, but if you keep following the plan, I promise you will begin to drop those pounds again. You just cannot expect that you will lose as fast as the first couple weeks every week. Good luck!
  22. Hello VST Fam.... I am now leading into my 9th week (yeahhhhh...I'm getting there). Anyway, like everyone else was stating on here, I reached the dreaded 3 weeks stall. My stall lasted for 5 weeks...yikes! But it's true. I tried everything to break my stall, ie. working out more, getting in more Water, getting in more portein, etc. Then, one morning after my workout I stopped in a Krogers. I was craving.....FOR CARBS! So, I bought some Kroger brand French Toast. It has like 16grams of Protein. Only like...230 calories for 2 slices. Still being knew, I didn't know if my tummy could handle bread, but I was willing to try. Sooo, I went home and fixed me 1 slice of toast and 2 slices of turkey bacon. I had plenty of water after I had finished. Showered, got dressed and went on about my day -- monitoring the affects of the bread on my tummy. No side affects, great! Sooo, the next day I did the same thing. By day 3 -- I had dropped 5lbs after a 5 week stall!!! 7lbs in that today week. I had finally broke my stall, and lead myself into ONDERLAND!!! If you are further out (beyond 1month), and you have reached a stall --reintroducing a carb might be the trick. I have literally put carbs back into my diet. I have been exercising like crazy, and wanted to see some results. My body was going into starvation mode! I was loosing inches (and I have created a topic on this.. ), but not loosing lbs.. I personally, needed the lbs. *Note: Someone said to me, lbs are not that important! I informed her, when you are like myself and have high blood pressure, or other ailgments that you might be dealing with -- and you go to your PCP, your doctor doesn't say "Come over here and let me measure you. No! They say, please step on the scale". Soooo, in this case -- lbs are VERY IMPORTANT! Especially, if I ever plan to get off my medicine, permanently. -------------------- Ok enough said! Please, feel free to share your "Stall Breakers". Please tell how long you have stalled and what worked for you to get the scale moving again!!! (Congrats to all of you on all your accomplishments with VSG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

    FRUSTRATED!

Everyone. The week 3 stall is very common. If you use the search function at the top and put in 3 week stall, you will get a whole lot of tips on how to break out of it. Basically your body has adjusted to the the decrease in calories and is going into starvation mode. There are several techniques on how to break the stall. You'll have to find the one that works the best for your situation.

    Plication Surgery

You sound like you're actually doing great. How much weight are you looking to lose ? 15 pounds is nothing to shake a stick at! As long as you're gradually losing weight, that's really all that matters. If you're physically able, I'd try to increase my mobility and get some exercise going! Also, what's your normal calorie intake per day ? Are you on any special diets at the moment ? Jenn ha sa great point about this possibly being your 3 week stall. Do a quick search to read more.
  25. AAARRRGH!!! I have been stalled for 4 days now! What am I doing wrong? What can I do better? I am fighting this battle in my head that the weight is not going to come off and I am getting discouraged. My diet today: breakfast : 1.5 egg whites lunch: 1/4 c guacamole or 1/2 c egg drop soup dinner: 4 oz cottage cheese. water inbetween meals. I know I need ALOT more Protein in my diet, but I needed a break from the Protein Shakes (and the constapation that goes with it). sigh* What do I need to do.
