There is no surgery one should go in alone .  I actually had the surgery done in Mexico in Dec 2004. I was very unsuccessful with it because I didn’t have a doctor here  to help me through the procedure, and I got sick in March/April 2005  I did have a doctor who did the fills, but he didn't provide any support other than that.   As a result, I did not have any fills, and of course, I have gained about 70 pounds since that surgery.  Feeling depressed and helpless, I decided to have the gastric bypass in April 2009. I went to a seminar at St James Hospital in Olympia Fields IL, and met Dr Shayani.  He told me that he ONLY performs lap bands because of it being minimally invasive, less complications, and long term/life time results. However, I told him that I was I was too afraid because of the earlier complications I had and was in the hospital for one week, and I just gave up on the band.   Researching gastric bypass surgery, I found out that my insurance, Chicago Public Schools, would not cover ANY weight loss surgery.  That was the reason I went to Mexico and had the lap band done.  So I just said, forget about all the surgeries and use the will power that I have.  It took me over 3 years to realize that it has nothing to do with will power.  I have been seeing a therapist for a year and I understand more about it.  I feel I am ready to try again with the lap band.  I called Dr Shayani, and he remembered me from a year ago.  I felt so relieved and so much better just knowing that he remembered me and would help me.  I feel it will be different this time.  So here I am, 3½ years later from the time I received the band to starting all over again.  I have been in counseling and I will have the doctor support, and group support I need.
