I am so sorry that you are having all of those complications, but I have to say I LOVE everything you had to say and the way that you said it. I recently voiced my regrets about having this surgery and got blasted by the sleeve fans on this site. It is not a popular opinion, but someone should voice it. Thank you!

Yes, mine started around 18 months post-op. A lot of discomfort on left side under breast bone / rib area. Hurt after eating as well as when taking deep breaths. Had CT and EGD and surgeon found my stomach had dilated at the top, grew sort of another little pouch which was pushing up under my diaphragm. This was causing food to become trapped in the pouch & also producing more acid...thus acid reflux. Surgeon also found another hiatal hernia. I just had surgery 2 weeks ago, he removed the growth/pouch (neo-fundus) and fixed the hernia.

A little perspective here. In 6 weeks you have lost 29 pounds according to your stats on the left. You started at 247. You have lost 11% of your body weight and 28% of your weight to goal. In 6 weeks!
    Please explain why your upset?

I think there's a spectrum of compliance after surgery. From those that follow every rule to those that are determined to eat wings and drink beer at one week post op (that would have killed me for sure). I think where the person falls on the spectrum determines what results they will get. This would explain why there are a few out there that don't lose any weight or very little after surgery.
For me, changing a lifetime of bad behaviors has proven to be challenging, particularly eliminating snacking. Every time I fail, I get up, brush myself off and try again. I'll get there and coming here helps motivate me to keep trying. If coming here and reading posts encourages a new person to change a few of their behaviors, then that is a positive thing. Sadly, some people are too deep in denial to change. Those people will say the surgery didn't work for them.

I am scared for some of these newbies and the lurkers who are reading. This fear is probably a huge part of why I don't just log off permanently.

Is it just me or does the trend seem to be "I'll eat what I want when I want no matter what my surgeon says" with other people actually coddling/recommending/applauding/defending that viewpoint?
When I joined this site, I had my @ss handed to me several times (THANK GOD!!) because I wondered why (out loud) my diet was so restrictive. I wanted permission to break some rules because it was damn hard to follow them. I never did test those waters (with the exception of a Hershey's Kiss one week post op -- it tasted like I imagine licking an ashtray would) because the experienced people scared the **** out of me with talks of leaks, tears, vomiting, and the worst? BEING A FAILURE AT WLS.
Maybe because I had my surgery in my 40s -- after decades of being fat and ready for a change -- I didn't take those words as "ganging up", "bullies", or "mean girls". Maybe it was because I knew in my head that I was being a dumbass every time I whined about wanted something salty instead of sweet. Maybe because I had the self realization that "listening to my body" put me in a place where I needed WLS, so clearly listening to me was a horrible idea...

I will never forget my first WLS seminar. There was a young girl a few rows in front of me who was scheduled for surgery the next week. When we were going over the dietary stages post op, she raised her hand and told the NUT she has a bachelorette party a week after her surgery. She TOLD this woman that she WOULD be eating wings and drinking, no matter what. It was, after all, her body and her right. I would love to know what happened to her. Ideally, they took her off the surgery schedule. Most likely, she had surgery and is still obese 3 years later.

I wish great success to anyone and everyone who has WLS. The quality of life this procedure has given back to me is worth all the coookies (sic) and crackers and french fries in the world. (Even McD's -- fresh out of the fryer!!) I hope everyone gets to experience everything they want to experience in a thinner, healthier body. I would love to hear less and less stories of people who never lost or gained it all back but I fear that those stories are just going to multiply with this new mindset.

    It's a shame. It's a great big DAMN shame.

    Here's a question - just curious...
Do people who can eat just about anything prior to surgery find that they can eat just about anything afterwards?
And do people who have tummy issues pre-surgery find that after surgery their sleeve is still sensitive - or more sensitive than before?
    Or is there no correlation?
    Discuss.....

I don't think there is any correlation really. Although for me nothing bothered me before and nothing bothers me now.

Cast-Iron before, egg-hating now. And like @@Candygyrl there are a few things I haven't tried because the idea of that food is revolting. Unfortunately, tuna is one of them. And I've limited carbs, so not sure how I'd do with refined sugar right now and I have no intention of finding out.

Cast Iron before. Nothing was too hot, too spicy, too sweet...

Now I dump when I eat ice cream or a rich cream based Soup. I can still eat super hot or spicy foods, but I cannot drink after or it all comes back up. Rice and Pasta make me vomit. I can eat a few bites of bread and potatoes but I feel crappy after so I just don't.

None of the changes bother me. They keep me honest and on track.

I had a cast Iron stomach pre and just after (maybe 5-6 months) it was more sensitive but again I can eat just about anything...some stuff makes me queasier than before...like raw onions (cooked are fine), go figure and rice was touch and go for a long time..some could come from age related I guess...but I am really surprised how much I can eat at times....and other times how little...depends on the food and what not....I am over a year out, and have lost a total of about 102 lbs. (including my pre-op 40) so we are stunned by the slow down, I lost SO FAST and SO MUCH at first (1-2 months) then it really slowed and the last 6 months I have been stalled in the same 5-10 lbs......we cut my calories back to 1500 (yes, I admit to the occasion cheat or bad choices, but the head takes much longer to catch up to the body)
Tummy wise, I named her Rosarita cause from the beginning she LOVED spicy stuff

I had a cast Iron stomach before surgery. Very rarely would food make me ill.
Post op, things don't make me "sick" per se (no nausea, vomiting) but I never know what will send me to the bathroom. And it changes from day to day.
Also, before surgery (sorry if TMI), but if I had to have a BM and I was out in public/mall/running/shopping/whatever, I could "hold" it until I got home. Not anymore - gotta go gotta go! And sometimes when I gotta go, my tummy cramps. I definitely didn't have that kind of urgency pre-op.
As far as complications are concerned, my recovery was fabulous. I didn't feel bad at all. My gallbladder did have to be taken out about 9 months post-op.

Coming up on my 11th month post-sleeve.
I could pretty much eat anything and have no issues.
I enjoy grilling and cooking and use lots of jalapeño, hot sauce, spicy rubs and an occasional habanero.
I was glad to discover that I can still enjoy everything the same.
I have never had much of a dumping sensation, although I do have an a predictable reaction to foods high in sugar. I seldom have any sweets, candy and equivalent. It's a food type that has really dropped off my radar along with beer and diet soft drinks.
For example, just celebrated wife's birthday. She'd asked that I not get a cake. I did, however, sneak by a gourmet cupcake bakery and bought a few varieties that I thought she'd like. One of them was chocolate cake with mint icing and a thin mint cookie on top. She said she wanted the other types and I did my husbandly duties and ate this thin mint cupcake to spare her the horror. I've had these before and loved 'em. Not this time. Tasted like a bag full of sugar. It seemed to be much bigger than I remember it being last time, even though I know it was the same. Within minutes of finishing the sugar bomb.....it hit my system and my system wasn't happy with me. It did what it could to get that stuff outa my body. It's all the proof that I need to know that our bodies were not designed to consume refined sugar. I don't need it in my life and my body doesn't like it so I'd call that a great outcome of avoiding it.
I do best when I enjoy meats and vegetables. I've also resumed eating salads. They always have chicken or other Protein in them....usually have kale or spinach as the leafy stuff....and always have eggs, cheese, sunflower seeds and light or no dressing.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I had one of those cast Iron stomachs before surgery and have had no issues or illnesses since the surgery. I haven't tried bread or rice or anything really solid like raw carrots, but I have tried a good selection of different foods including some Pasta and potato and no problems so far.

Frankly, I can't believe you found a doctor who would actually do the surgery. That is a low BMI. Yes, at 22 you could have done it yourself and kept it off. Maybe not 52 pounds, but 35? You'd be 155. That's a great weight.

Yes!!! A test should be given, psych evals should take place, patients should be given clear and full information.
And all information, from A to Z should be given pre op, not post op on discharge as in my case!
Warnings about changes to staff pay should be announced to patients before surgery, so they might decline being admitted during industrial action.
The program should be longer, more intensive, more thorough.
We were TOLD that six weeks out, we would be eating "normally", just in smaller quantities!

Why not just move along? Reading this thread is a choice.
    You just like the argument.
I wasn't obese because I ate what I wanted, I became obese following a period of a five year illness which left me bedbound.
Anyone following the low FODMAP plan for IBS will tell you, you cannot just eat what you want.
But I clearly could have gone on a starvation liquid diet and lost weight, as that is what has happened to me and several of my friends, post op.
What "work" are you talking about? I "work" now to STOP weightloss!

Thank you all for your kind wishes. Of course I new that I would be healing and therefore restricted at 9 weeks (now 10). But if you read these forums, some people are eating quite alot at three months out. My nutritionist said that I would be "eating normally at six weeks out, just less". No mention of problem foods, intolerances etc. Upon discharge after surgery, then the booklet is issued to me discussing the food stages in detail and that "meat and lettuce" might be problem foods.
I take your point that maybe a year from now, I might be eating better. Or I might not.
Again, I will never, ever have a different opinion. 6 months, 6 years. Never.
This was wrong for me. I want to be free to choose how, when, where I eat and drink. I made a mistake, I made a bad decision.
I am stuck with this forever now and that makes me sad but it is done.
Just trying to live with it now.
