Live alone - post-op care
You know, there are people on here who have had the entire procedure and never told a soul. I don't know how they made it. I had surgery on Wed. and was back at work on Monday, the first 2 days were tough, by the third day I was pretty much good to go. I guess if your job doesn't involve a lot of physical activity (and absolutely NO lifting) you can probably make it. I will say my weight loss has been much quicker than you would expect on your average diet and by 10 days post op I had patients noticing and asking how I was doing it so have a good answer ready! I told the people closest to me before surgery then decided after that I'd just tell anyone who asks and so far I've had nothing but support from everyone, a LOT of questions from a few but still support. Do whatever is right for you, but it's nice to have someone you can confide in and who can support you with this. Good luck! You'll do great

Live alone - post-op care
You'll be fine, achy and tired but fine. I'd probably make a bed on the couch to rest on for the first 48 hours where you're close to the kitchen (to get in all those liquids you'll be sipping) and hopefully you have a bathroom downstairs....just keep in mind that pain meds can make you dizzy so be careful on the stairs. And you can't drive yourself home so you'll need to hitch a ride with someone. Good luck!

Hello - New to The Forum
Good luck with your decision. You're right, now is the time to do something before you have any serious heath problems. I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and have been overweight my entire life. I'd lose 30 pounds, gain 40, I think we all know the drill. I was tired of hiding from cameras and refusing to look at pictures because I didn't want to see myself. I'm a single mom with a 5 year old son and while I do as much as I can I still felt like I was missing out on so much of his childhood because I was tired and worn out by the end of the day. I'd go out to practice soccer with him and 10 minutes later would be exhausted. I still have a long long way to go and can't wait to get my first fill and have a little restriction but so far am loving my band. The pre-op and post-op 2 week liquid diets SUCK but eventually end. The surgery itself was a breeze to recover from. And I'm already feeling better, less tired and run down and kicking my son's butt on Wii fit . My best advice? Go to your PCP and get started on the supervised weight loss program so that you've got that going, even if you decide against the lap band it will be beneficial to you. Then read, read, read, and read some more. There is some excellent advice on this site and a lot of people who are ore than happy to help with any questions you have. Again good luck!

Confused?
You're right, it is a tough decision and not to be taken lightly. There are problems that could arise, no one can argue that. I'm a single mom of a five year old, I'm all he has...I didn't take it lightly either....however, for me, the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc...plus the fact that I was missing out on so much of my little boys life made me opt to go for it. I'm only 2 1/2 weeks out from surgery but haven't regretted it for a second. Good luck with your decision. I suggest you go to a seminar, it'll scare ya but give you a lot more information to base your decision on.

I am so ashamed
Don't be ashamed! Just start over!!! If you read other posts many of us are struggling through before our first fill. Apparently it's very very common to have little to no restriction and be starving all the time. What does your surgeon want you eating 3 weeks out? For most of us it seems to be soft/mushy stuff. Stick with what's approved for you right now so you don't mess up your surgery (even if you're eating more than you are supposed still stick with the approved stuff), make sure you're getting plenty of water and protein and get your booty moving. Nobody said this was going to be easy. This is your first real post band challenge and you can beat it! Keep your eye on the prize, a healthy you. It will get easier after you get your fills and get some resistance but until you get there do your best and don't beat yourself up too hard. You can do this, you really can!

Big Day is Tomorrow!
I'm so excited for you! The day before surgery is almost like the day before Christmas...the anticipation!!! I am very glad to hear you have help and support, you also have a great attitude going in. Take care and good luck, we'll be waiting to hear from you on the other side!!!

Surgery In 2 Days
I'm so excited for you!!! Be glad you didn't have to do 2 weeks pre op liquids like a lot of us. You can make it 2 more days. Just think 2 days out of the rest of your life, not such a big deal! Good luck, we'll be thinking about you!!!!

Can't imagine a lifetime of this
You shouldn't be having that much trouble with clear liquids, if you're not getting at least 64 oz. of fluid a day you're likely getting dehydrated and that is going to complicate everything. I would call your surgeon for advice, if he's comfortable with how you are then I would stick with broth and gatorade, hit the gas-x like crazy, and walk walk walk....but absolutely I'd call and let him know how much pain you're in and how little you are able to get down! Good luck, it will get better, really it will!!!

Day ONE POST-OP!!!
My surgery was supposed to be at 9:00, the day before they called (which freaked me out, I just KNEW they were cancelling) and moved it to 1:30...at 3:20, after having been NPO since 10:00 p.m. the night before they finally came to get me to take me back. It was all worth it but just something to whine about . Glad you're doing well, you'll be sore a bit but it's really not that bad is it?

I have a stitch sticking out!
I was banded the day before you and have one sticking out also....I'm just pretending it's not there for now so let me know what your surgeon says!

Hello
Just know that we're here for you in and support you in your decision. I'm sorry to hear you don't have support at home, that makes everything hard but shoulders back, chin up, you can do it on your own. Three months is nothing when you consider how long you've had bad habits and how long it took you to get where you are. You lost 6 pounds over three months, three months that included Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years...In an average year I probably would have gained 15 pounds during that time so consider those 6 pounds to be pretty freaking amazing and keep on going!
-
What to tell people?
I've only been banded about 2 1/2 weeks but came out to my co-workers as soon as I got my surgery date. I've now got patients (I'm a physician assistant) noticing that I've lost weight and asking questions and made the decision this week to just tell whoever asked...I have several (MANY) patient who would benefit from the lap band and decided that maybe I can be a role model and encourage them to do what they need to (and have had 2 of them schedule appointments with my surgeon this week!). I figure if I can give someone hope or encouragement it's worth blabbing about it! Whatever decision you make is the right one for you, don't fret about it too much!

Just getting started... I think
Welcome and good luck! The waiting is HORRIBLE! Once you make the decision to go for it then having to sit back and wait while everything else gets done is terrible, but you'll make it. Use this time to read read read and ask us anything that pops into your mind. I'm early in the journey but will be the first to jump up and say "if you're ready to do the work GO FOR IT!!!!!" Again, good luck! We're rooting for ya!

Hi!
So, I'm new here, just found this world earlier this week when I googled "2 weeks post lap band and starving" and boom, here you are, and 'lo! Apparently everyone 2 weeks post surgery is starving right along with me!!! I was starting to have my doubts, "oh my God, I"m going to be hungry forever?!?" but now am on mushies and while not full or satisfied, no longer starving and anxiously awaiting my first fill in 11 days. I lost 12 pounds in the 2 weeks pre-op and now have lost 12 pounds post-op, so 24 pounds since Dec. 3, not too shabby! I jumped up to get something off the ceiling at work earlier this week and almost lost my pants (much to my co-workers amusement). Oh, and a little about me in case you're curious. I'm a divorced single mom to an amazing 5 year old boy. My ex was verbally and on a few occasions physically abusive. But we got out and never looked back and our lives are amazing. I've been overweight forever, in fact, my mom got yelled at when she took me to my 6 week check-up because I'd gained too much weight...My mom had a gastric bypass almost 30 years ago, I think I am a combination of genes and learned behavior. My family loves to eat, it's what we do to celebrate, it's what we do when we get together, it's what we do to show our love...and we can cook too...bad combination to be a good cook and a great eater! So...I'm cruising right along, feeling great, little to no pain unless I do something stupid (lift something too heavy, etc), hungry, but not starving, exercising/walking 4-5 times a week, and happy and excited about my future (something I haven't felt in a long time), not to mention well on my way to a healthier me. I'm happy to be here and thrilled to have someone to ask my millions of questions to when I need to! Best of luck on your journeys! :smile2:

feel no different and Soooo hungry
I think most of us felt that way a few days after surgery and before we could have anything even semi-solid. Once you to to food that has a little more constancy to it it will get better, and (I'm hoping) will get better after your first fill (Mine's in 11 days so I'll let ya know!). Hang in there, you can do it!!!

getting closer....but still have questions!
Melissa, that's what we're here for! I am 2 weeks and 2 days post op so I'm still new to this. I had my surgery on a Wednesday and went home Thursday, took very little pain medication while in the hospital (I'd take a hit before I got up and walked). If I was laying in the bed I was fine, once I was up I was fine. It was the act of getting out of bed that hurt (not terribly but very similar to how you felt after your gallbladder surgery) then once I was up I was fine again. I was sleeping on my tummy by night three, at first with a pillow propped under 1 side to support some of the weight, now flat on my tummy. My surgeon apparently puts the port deeper than some others and I can't feel it at all when I'm laying down, I have to really search to find it at all actually. I did have 3-4 days of that "bloated pressury gassy feeling" but my docs nurse had told me to smuggle gas-x into the hospital and I lived off of it for about 4 days and I think it saved my life...that and move, walking, stretching, the more I did, the better I felt. I was back at work (tired) the following Monday. I haven't had any nausea at all. The first week I never felt hungry, then on day seven I woke up starving and stayed that way for a week THEN I got moved up to mushies and now I'm fine, I can get satisfied on the mushy stuff and stay that way for a couple hours. I can eat more than I am supposed to but much less than I would have previously and I can gulp water with no problem but I've continued to lose weight so that's all that matters! My first fill is on Jan. 12 so hopefully that'll reduce the amount I can eat a bit. Like I said I'm 16 days post op and can do pretty much anything I want. I have to remind myself I can't pick up my five year old because I actually forget I just had this done. I feel great, almost had a pair of pants fall off this week at work, and am slowly learning how to not think about food 24/7...that has been the weirdest part for me. I think I've spent my life planning what I would eat next. This morning I sat down to a breakfast 1/2 the size of what I would have normally ate and couldn't finish it...it's an amazing feeling. I have no regrets except wishing I'd done it 2 years ago! Take care and don't worry too much! And ask away! That's why we're here

December Bandsters 2009
I can't believe you only have 2 incisions, I have FIVE!!! I'm so jealous. Next summer you'll be a bikini model and I'll be all scarred up...Must go pout now.... I too had the pressure and felt the need to burp...eventually did burp and burp and burp and OHHH felt so much better, are you taking gas-x? It saved my life! Do your best to get the fluids in, it will make your entire recovery easier.

timeline after surgery
I'm a newbie. I'm 2 weeks post-op today, lost 12 pounds in the 2 week pre-op liquids and 12 pounds post op so far....Granted, that will slow down now that I'm actually "eating" (sort of). I'm not saying 140 pounds in a year isn't possible, but everyone varies (and as you've seen it can vary a lot) and I hate to see you on here a couple months post-op feeling frustrated because you haven't lost as much as you're hoping for. Again, good luck! (my doc recommends 1-2 pounds a week FYI)

timeline after surgery
Keep in mind it took you a while to get to 290...it'll take a while to get it off. The lap band will help but don't set yourself up for disappointment by expecting too much. Take care and good luck!

First Appointment Next Week
I am so happy for you and hope this is the beginning of a thinner, healthier (and eventually pregnant) future for you. Getting approval, pre-op diets...it all gets frustrating as all get out but (2 weeks out) I can say it is so worth it! Good luck, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

more optimistic today
I'm fairly certain 4 weeks would kill me, seriously :Dancing_wub: I am incredibly proud of you for sticking with it, I broke down and started mushies a couple days early from my 2 weeks of liquids...and I will confess...am doing much better now, not starving all the time, although I'd love a slice of pizza! Go chocolate medi shake go!!!!! You can do it!!!!!
-
New to the Site...
Congrats!! I"m so glad you were approved, now the waiting 'til surgery is torture!!!! (But it's worth it)

I am STARVING!
Sandy, I'm right there with you. Same surgery date, same starving. I do get a full feeling that I didn't get before but I can eat a significant amount (much more than 4 ounces) before I get it and it's gone quickly, definitely not lasting for 4 hours...I can chug water without a problem. I'm trying to just stay active and eat fairly healthy so at least I don't gain....I will DIE if I gain!!!! Protein does seem to keep me full longer but the protein shakes appear to be going straight through and don't last me any time at all. Don't get discouraged yet! Hopefully the fill will make all the difference in the world for both of us!!

postop weight gain
Likely they filled you up with IV fluids while in the hospital, I had the same problem but after 3-4 days it disappeared plus a little extra went with it.
