On May 5 2008 I had Lap Band Surgery. After leaving the hospital I was able to go off diabetes medication and some of my blood pressure medications. I had lost weight before the surgery and continued losing weight till about January 2009. After a few months of having fills and still staying at the same weight or gaining a few pounds each month, the surgeon determined I had a leak somewhere in the system.  His suggestion was to replace the port and see if that corrected the problem.  I had gotten down to 263 pounds at this point.  After the port replacement I continued to gain a pound or two, or stay the same weight through monthly appointments and fills. During this time I was extremely hungry and fought to keep off every last pound. I am now at 285 and getting more frustrated by the day. At my last appointment I was told there is definitely a leak in the system and that he will either replace the whole apparatus or gave me the option of other surgeries. Right now I am awaiting an answer to see if my insurance will pay for the replacement apparatus.  I had to pay $1600 for it the first time. My doctor told me this problem was in no way my fault. So now I wait and see if they will pay for replacement of a defective apparatus and try to keep my hunger under check until we can figure something out. I do not look forward to going through the surgery and recovery and then having to wait till they get the band adjusted right.  I do not believe it ever reached the point of correct fill at any point since the original surgery.  I worked really hard to loose the weight that I have to this point and to try and keep it off. I exercise excessively and pay dearly because I have fibromyalgia.  The band worked for me in the beginning and I chose this method of weight loss surgery because it was less invasive than the other options available. Hopefully this situation will have a quick remedy and I can again be on my way to taking off the pounds.
