123crod reacted to honk in I need to do this all on my own..
I don't want to be a wet blanket but you need to do this for yourself. Hoping your mother will want to start excercising or eat better is setting your self up for disappointment. Dancing is a great way to excersise and burn calories! If you have knee issues that could be difficult. Definately make use of the treadmill. Staying motivated while exercising is BIG. If you have an MP3 player (or even portable CD player showing my age here) that will make the treadmill so much better! Could you put a Tv in front of the treadmill? Even an old school one from a thrift store would be better than nothing. Personally I swim. Once in the Water no one can see me anyway! Last night I bought a regular swimsuit instead of one with a skirt. I'll see how that goes. Anyway. For lap swimming I use a snorkle and connect a water proof MP3 player to the goggles. I chose swimming becuase I have a bad knee problem and needed to loose weight. I lost 80 pounds presurgery from dieting and swimming.

No... spanking is not child abuse and some times a smart mouth deserves a slap! Don't get me wrong, too much abuse to children in this world and I don't like to see a child spanked or slapped, but sometimes it is more affective than a parent proving he can count to three!

    Absolutely not!!
It just shouldn't be done in a fit of anger and the child should know exactly why it is being done.

I totally agree with the above post. You need help and that is nothing to be ashamed of. So many of us are emotional eaters but your problem seems even more than that. Like you want to punish yourself. I am no doctor but I have seen a therapist on and off for the past 6 years and think it will help you. Do you go to a support group? That is very important to be around people who are dealing with the things you are, you find out you are not alone. On-line support is great but not the same as in-person. We did not have a support group close to me so I met people on this site in the same area as me and we meet and talk on the phone on a regular basis. It helps so much. I aslo found when food controls me instead of me controlling it I return to protien shakes. I buy the ready made so I do not have to think about food at all for a few days.

God bless you. I said a prayer for you. You are not alone.

123crod reacted to IndioGirl55 in Almost 2 years out from banding and feeling like a failure!
Hugs Hugs Hugs for all your struggles.. Finding that sweet spot is hard for some - but you gotta know that band doesn't lose the weight for you - it doesn't make your food choices or exercise - you do those things..
As you all state - you have found out no matter how tight you are you can eat around your band - and that's the problem with being too tight - we tend to go for soft/mushie foods and those are normally higher in calories..
They have banded our stomachs and not our heads - where imho the majority of our issues w/food lie..
If you can't eat 3-4 oz of hard Protein - you are too tight - you will feel physically full on this amount of food - doesn't mean that you are going to be satisfied - doesn't mean you aren't going to want to continue to eat for the taste and comfort you get from food - but you will be full - but your head and body will still craves more food
I'm 3 yrs out and this happens to me every nite.. I eat my dinner and am full - but not satisfied and my body wants more - it's my addiction at work.. This is what you have to realize - You band is never going to take away your head hunger and I think most of what we preceive as hunger is really head hunger - if you really sit and contimplate your stomach you aren't really hungry - you just want the taste or to soothe your stress etc..
IMHO you gotta quit thinking you are dieting - you need to change your eating habits to healthy (I haven't dieted since day 1 I am eating healthy - lower fat - limited sugars and limited starches) and you gotta exercise
If you are absolutly starving - eat a some meat or veggies or even a piece of fruit not a candy bar, bag of chips or some cookie etc.. You crave the bad stuff - again cuz this is our addiction talking to us - and if you need sweets - have sf pudding - sf fudgesciles - sf yogurt - hell a pure Protein vanilla cream pre-made pt shake has 110 cal - add 1/2 banana and 1 tsp of Peanut Butter and some ice blend and you will think you have died and when to heaven - about 200 cals - 19 grms of pt and you will be full and your sweet tooth satisfied..
You all can do this - you really can - I was 52 when banded I'm now 55 - I feel 10 yrs younger - have so much energy - I eat healhty and don't feel deprived and I exercise 4-5 days a week (have bootcamp tonite) if I can do this - so can you- I'm no diff that any of you - I have had this addiction my entire life - I was just sick and tired of being morbity obese - letting life slip by without being able to participate in it cuz I was too fat and tired all the time..
So make up your minds that you will never be able to eat like you use to - why - cuz our normal eating is what got us fat in the 1st place. Definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting a diff result...
You gotta make the lifestyle change and with the help of your band you can do that - I did 75% of the work by changing my habits - the band did 25% by providing restiction..
Good Luck to you all !!!

123crod reacted to ElfiePoo in Stop the comparisons
The best thing you all can do for yourself is to *STOP* comparing yourself to everyone else...and that goes for those who say "Look at how successful I am. If I can do it, anyone can do it."
We are all unique individuals and while our basic anatomy is the same, they are not identical. Age, activity level, health factors and so much more go into how slow or fast we lose weight. Our reasons for being overweight will vary. Some eat for emotional reasons...some just bad habits...others because of a constant driving hunger. The dynamics of our personal lives vary. Some are able to remove all temptation from their home...either because they're single or they have fully supportive family members willing to eat the way we need to eat (healthy choices, no junk). Others have families unwilling to give up their own bad eating habits or who deliberately try to sabotage them for whatever reason.
If you want to compare yourself to anyone...compare yourself to *you*. Keep a journal of your progress and when you feel like you're falling down, read back and remember where *you* started.
Comparing ourselves to others will only help to make us feel like failures...and telling others "if I can, you can" (I'm paraphrasing) is only a way of grandstanding and saying "Look at me" while at the same time making the other person feel like a failure.

123crod reacted to ElfiePoo in So, here's the issue.....
I agree it sounds like your doctor wants his patients to see fast results, but we know from experience what happens on such restrictive diets...they don't last and then we go overboard in the other direction.
You will still lose quickly on a low carb diet where the carbs come from vegies (no Pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, etc.) without having to eliminate the fat. There's absolutely no reason that I can think of to avoid pork, red meat or dairy products like cheese...and, in fact, it is these higher fat foods that will make you feel more satisfied after a meal.
Low carb and low fat diet is a recipe for disaster for most of us, but if you can do it more power to you.

    Jazz,
If you've been banded for 2 years and only lost 16 pounds since surgery (based on your ticker...14 of that 30 was preop maybe?) *and* unable to eat real food, there's no doubt that you've been overfilled for a good part of that 2 years. As we all discover, being overfilled does not lead to weight loss because we end up eating higher calorie/carb slider foods. In addition, we can damage our esophagus from too many episodes of urping up stuck food.< /p>
I know it's scary to be without a fill but, to be honest, haven't the last 2 years been sort of like you haven't a fill in the sense that you were eating sliders and not really losing weight?
Please don't think I'm insensitive. I spent several months in the same condition with the same results so I really do understand. Just look at this as a rest period and do the best you can with at least making good choices.

After tons of stress about pre-existing conditions and being turned down by insurance company was finally approved last Monday for a Dec. 20th Surgery date. I'm a Type II Diabetic and am hopeful to put that disease in remission and start felling good again. Start liquid diet on the 6th and I'm anxious about it-two weeks on liquids alone feels like an eternity to a guy who is always hungrier than a runaway slave-lol. I'm excited and scared all at the same time-I'm thankful for this community. I'm open to any feedback/advice.
