  1. Yes, I've heard that they can. But I think if you are realistic in your expectations than it shouldn't be a problem. To be honest, I have bipolar disorder and have been hospitalized for it twice in my life but I got through because they said I had a realistic view of what I was getting into. I have a strong emtional attachment to food (don't we all) that they said I would need to continue to work on but other than that it was a piece of cake. (yummmm, cake!)

    Antidepressants and Lapband

I take several meds f0r bipolar and for atrial fibrillations, about ten pills a day. I was freaked out so I talked to my pharmacist before surgery and she made several suggestions for substitutions. However, my meds are so finally balance, I didn't want to take a risk, so I just tried swallowing them and they went down fine. The biggest one, Depakote 500, I still cut in half...but I only take 250, so I would be doing that anyway. Point it, you may want to try getting different forms in the early days, but unless they are big old horse pills you should be able to get them down.

    Pre Op Diet Cheat

I had a two-week liquid diet before surgery and then only clear liquids for 3 days before. I cheated a few times during the liquid phase and once early in the clear liquids. I was freaked out so I talked to my bariatric coordinator and she said not to worry, she wouldn't encourage doing anymore, but as long as I did clear liquids for 24 hours before the surgery and used milk of magnesia to clean me out beforehand I would be fine. That being said, the pre-op diet is there as much to start getting you in the right mind frame for after banding as much as it is to help you lose weight and shrink your liver. I'd try to stick to it until your surgery, because there are some tough times after as your baby stomach gets used to new foods. Hope that helps!
  4. Okay, I'm shocked and pretty much devastated when I got on my scale this morning and had gained 2 1/2 pounds. I'm moving beyond mushies into soft foods and am eating about 700 to 1000 calories per day, but am having trouble getting down all the liquid while planning arund the food. I had been down to 235.5 from a high of 265 at my sugical consult, but today I a back to 238. I know it seems a small amount in the big picture...but I just went through so much to get to this point in my lap band journey, it just pisses me off to see the scale going in the wrong direction!:cool2: Any words of wisdom from those of you who have been down this road and possibly experienced something similar??

    Self Pay Cost

I did salf-pay in central California and its $16,500. I probably could have found it cheaper but I wanted to be at home and have a surgeon who was right around the corner if I needed anything. Good luck!

    "Top Surgeons"

I know I'm a late-comer to this thread, but wanted to put my two cents in if you are still looking and researching. As a cash pay, I thought about going out of town...beleive me, cash is welcome anywhere. But I ended up right in little ol' Bakersfield. With John Garcia of Bakersfield Surigcal Associates. He does seminars at both Mercy Southwest and San Joaquin (which I beleive has the better overall program.) He came highly recommended from a friend who had him and my husband and I just loved him...practical, a real person you can talk to and always takes the time to answer all your questions. If you prefer a more "distinguished" surgeon, Dr. Hormuz Irani, who started the group, is also very caring and great with patients....he's been doing this since God was a boy, so his skills are supreme. Hope that helps! Cristy

Hey Dani - I'm from Bakersfield...banded on March 31. I'm still having all the first week issues, bu each day gets better..Where dd you have your surgery and which surgeon? What has your experience been like? I'd love to get more Bakersfield folks on here so we can chat and eventually meet...the hospital support groups just don't happen frequently enough to meet my needs!

    Cymbalta question

Hi. I am bipolar type 2 and cymbalta is just one of mant meds I take. I started out by opening capsules and swallowing the foul stuff inside. But in the last day or so, I am going back to swallowing my smaller pills. I've had no problems and I'm 5 days post surgery. The warm water things sounds like a good idea.
