marfar7 got a reaction from LaurieC in Please Tell Me It Gets Better
It absolutely gets better. I thought my recovery was long. By 3 weeks I was feeling much better, but those first 2 weeks, I felt like I was hit by a semi. I'd come on here and see a bunch of people out running marathons at 3 days. Used to bum me out. Felt I was the only one whose recovery sucked. I wasn't.
Anyday now you'll wake up feeling better. I promise. This can't last forever. and once u start eating real food, ull get ur energy back. I rpmise...
    Good luck

Take advantage of the "Honeymoon period" (like the first 6 mths or so). It's much harder to stick to small portions when ur hunger returns and u find u can eat much more at 8 mths than at 3 mths (I'm 10 mths out and can eat about 2x as much as 6 mths ago).
And please don't follow my advice on the way I lost my weight. I eat everything - just a few bites of it (including burgers, fries, tacos, pizza, and sandwiches). I have found myself stuck, 13 lbs from goal, almost a year out becuz of my philosopy. Trying to get it straight now but I think it's much harder now.
    Good luck to u

I am also a band to sleeve revision. When I got the band in 2009, that was a selling point - that it was reversible. But, as I started to lose weight, I wanted it to be permanent, not temporarily. Why would u want something temporarily?
I thought the same thing. God put this organ in my body for a reason and would I regret losing most of it? Not yet. I'm 10 mths out and don't regret it for a second. 15% is all u really need.
    Good luck!

    Hey RJ,
popcorn is my biggest slider also. I can only eat a small amt of ice cream, milkshakes, Cookies, chips - but for some reason, If I tried hard enuf, I could eat a whole bucket of movie popcorn. At home, I usually measure out air popped (with real butter, of course, non of that microwave crap) to 2-3 cups but at the theater, I just eat until I'm stuffed -which is alot of popcorn.
Cheez Its also. Not sure why I can eat an endless amt of these 2 things but only a few bites of ice cream? Oh, and candy, except chocolate. I can only eat a bite of chocolate.< /p>
Sliders are different for everyone. It takes some practice to find out what sliders are urs.
    Good luck!

marfar7 got a reaction from Carol P in Newbie. Beverages, Alcohol, carbonated drinks, caffeine, coffee
Not sure if I woulda gone ahead with wls if someone told me I'd have to give up coffee (well, probly but I wouldn't have been happy). I was offered coffee after I passed my leak test the day after surgery in the hospital. It didn't sound good so I didn't have 1 for about 4 weeks. Then I just woke up and said "Today is the day"!
I drink 1-2 cups (to be perfectly honest, they're more mugs than cups) a day splashed with a little sf Creamer or sf coffee Syrup and milk. I only drink good coffee (grind my Beans as I go) and my family says I'm the "coffee snob" of the family. U couldn't pay me to drink Folgers.
As for alcohol, I do drink a glass of red wine most nites. Started that about 3 mths post op. I don't remember there being rule about alcohol, as in when. Just remember to log in those calories (and don't drink too much cuz that will lead to mindless eating - been there). And I've taken a sip or 2 of hubbys soda about once a month when we go out to eat. I miss it when I eat pizza, but thats about it. My dr told me that carbonation might stretch my sleeve so that scares me enuf to keep me away. And I'm not a big fan of letting the bubbles die and then drinking it (as some suggest). Yuck. Whats the point?
    Good luck to u!

I had absolutely no ban of coffee at all. In fact, I was offered a cup of real coffee after my leak test the day after surgery in the hospital. Sounded gross at the time (not to mention I'm a coffee snob and hosiptal coffee doesn't meet my standards). I woke up about a month after surgery and said "today is the day". I've been drinking real coffee ever since. Either 2 cups of my own (grind my own Beans every am) with a splash of sf Creamer or sf coffee Syrup and milk, or 1 cup of a good (read: NOT STarbucks. Ick) coffee house coffee with Splenda and milk. Always add an extra shot of espresso. Like to taste my coffee. So far nothing bad has happened to me.
My sleeve has not collapsed under the "pressure" of something "bad". My nurse actually told us that they were not limiting caffeine cuz u hafta have "something" in ur life to look forward to.
Not sure I would had wls if they told me I couldn't have real coffee forever. I might've but I wouldn't have been happy bout it!
Good luck! Follow ur own drs guidelines. Just telling u what mine expects...

marfar7 got a reaction from catfish87 in Depression and Bariatric surgery
I've been diagnosed with clinical depression for about 15 yrs. I've been on Prozac, Paxil - then took about a 4 yr break from them.
My husband of 19 yrs died in 2007 (46 yrs old). I became horribly depressed. Actually did a stint in the psych ward for 2 weeks while they found a medication cocktail that worked. I took Celexa, Wellbuttin and Abilify.
In 2009, I had lapband surgery and proceeded to lose 100 lbs over the next 2 yrs. I started dating again and even found my 2nd husband (2 1/2 yrs now). No more depression. Over the last few yrs, I've worked with my psych to wean myself off the drugs. I now take a 1/4 of a dose of Celxa (cuz when I try to go without it, I feel "blah") but the rest r gone. Not sure if it was losing weight and feeling more confident or falling in love again that did it.
Not sure how changes in my living could have an effect on my brain chemicals but they do. Give it a while, take the drugs, and ull probly not need them after losing weight. At least for me this was true...
    Good luck!

Just eat the thing, or a part of it! It's not like you're going to eat 2, 3 or more.
That's the great part about the VSG. I don't feel I'm "cheating," so to speak. If I want whatever, I don't fret and guilt trip about it, because I know I can't eat the whole bag, or package, or quart (like ice cream, etc).
I've had a very busy month and last night, I wanted ice cream. So, I ate one of those 4oz cups of B&J Cookie Dough ice cream, whereas before, I'd have eaten half the near-quart carton (Breyer's butter almond).
One pop-tart? Enjoy at least half of it!

2 years out and 200 lbs down? 10 lbs from goal? I say don't take just a bite......eat it all.........a bite is just the kind of test we couldn't pass and ended up here......embrace it...own it....enjoy it.... And then get back up on the horse like you've done so well for the past almost 2 years......really.....live a bit......it's a pop tart, not heroin:)

And all this time, I've been counting 5 oz as my nightly red wine intake on myfitnesspal. Thats the serving size. Just actually measured it. 12 oz's! Wow. Went from 112 cals to 252 cals. Never even thought I could drink 12 oz of wine at once.
Guess I'm gunna give up my wine at least till goal (about 13 lbs). And no, I'm not even getting buzzed (for those who think they'll get toasted on 2 oz of wine)
Advice: Measure at least ur favorite foods/drinks just to get a more accurate estimate on calorie content...

marfar7 got a reaction from virgo63 in Head hunger after sleeve?
About 50% of people lose hunger after the Ghrelin producing stomach is removed. However, Ghrelin is also made by the pancreas and the brain - and I guess my brain and pancreas work overtime to compensate for the removed stomach! I got my "real hunger" back on day 10. I could've eaten my arm by the time I ate soft foods at 4 weeks.
For the lucky ones who lose their hunger for a long period of time: IT'S JUST NOT FAIR!

    What he said...
Alas I don't feel the restriction nearly as much at 15 months post-op. Though I do feel it of I over eat and it's misery. I think everyone's advice here is great. It's very important to retrain your eating habits and lifestyle. It's also important to enjoy your life. So I try to enjoy my food so that I feel satisfied. Then I'm less likely to overeat or go grazing in the kitchen. Boredom and stress are big eating triggers for me and the emotional eating behavior and food addiction is what I am finding the hardest to address effectively.

I'm 10mths post op and still heavily rely on my sleeve restriction. I can only eat so much without being in extreme pain. I'm wondering if the longer I go, will the restriction still be my main goal or if the healthier habits I should have picked up by now take over?
What do u think the secrets of ur success r attributed to? I know I should pick up healthy habits just in case I lose the optimal retriction I now enjoy. I guess I'm holding on to the hope Ill always be able to eat very little and that I can continue eating whatever I want. A girl can dream can't she?
