  1. I had gastric sleeve on February 23rd. I have to do full liquids for for a month post-op. I am so sick of artificial sweeteners. It seems like everything has them, the sugar-free Jell-O, the sugar free pudding, the Protein Shakes and any kind of low calorie drink. Can someone tell me if they're nutritionist wanted of them to continue to use them once you're out of the liquid phase. I would much rather just eat clean.

  2. I got this advice below from my surgeon this week (I get an email from them most weeks with helpful info and videos - it’s kinda cool). I’m Australian so it’s using the metric system but it might be helpful to you.

We often get asked from those patients with a sleeve gastrectomy whether the sleeves will stretch over time. The short answer is yes, all sleeves do stretch over the years. The sleeve reduces the size of the stomachs capacity from around 1.5L down to 200ml. This good news is this sleeve will keep this capacity down to 200 ml for several years. After the 3-4 year mark the capacity will increase to around the 300- 400ml mark but it stops at that size.

It’s important to remember that the sleeve is merely a tool to help on hunger control and Portion Control. What's just as important is to modify our eating behaviours - getting used to small regular portions, eating Proteins first and being mindful of our eating patterns. We need to be mindful of the difference between when our body needs fuel versus eating for emotional issues (tiredness, stress, boredom etc.).

The emotional (non hungry) eating patterns are what often drives weight regain. Make the behavioural changes in the first 2-3 years when the sleeve is at it’s tightest and you’ll be rewarded by long term weight control and you'll be able to avoid weight regain. Watch the video below for more insights.

What video? Thank you for your response it's very helpful.

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about this. What you described is my worse fear. This hits home for me, I had severe complication during my second C-Section because of scar tissue. I was advised against having more children. In researching bariatric procedures the deciding factor is what the complication from scar tissue will be. I met with one surgeon who recommended the lap band, when I described my scar tissue issue, he replied, that it would not be a problem if done by a skilled surgeon. I'm going with my gut, and not pursuing the lap-band, my scar tissue history brings back too many traumatic memories and I do not want future complications. I have decided to go with the new endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty procedure since it is less invasive. However, my doctor does not recommend the ESG for prior lap-bander, she explained that the technique of shrinking the stomach is similar to stomach's of individuals who have been banded and they do not respond as well. I guess the body is that smart. It's like.. been there done that..I know that trick.
I assume your surgeon removing a bunch of scar tissue put a toll on your body. The next 6 weeks will provide your body the time to heal. When he goes in for the VSG hopefully you will be scar free. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. I understand how frustrating and disappointed you are, hang in there.

Thank you. I am ok with the little time in between now.

  4. I am in the process right now waiting to hear from insurance to have the sleeve. November 27th I had my lap band taken out along with a bunch of scar tissue and a hernia repaired. My surgeon believes he can do it in 6 weeks.

So my sleeve will be February 23. My surgeon decided he wanted to wait 3 months. So lap band out Nov 27 and sleeve February 23! It seems that 3 months in between is becoming the standard. They told me they wanted to wait 3 months so there is less complications.

  5. I went in yesterday for band removal , hernia repair and vsg. After 4 hours of surgery my surgeon said there was so much scar tissue from the band, he decided to not do the vsg. He was able to remove a lot of the scar tissue and do the hernia repair. He said that he could do the sleeve in 6 weeks after some healing.

Needless to say, I am pretty bummed out. So another 2 weeks of liquid diet And waiting. They already sent in for pre auth for the second surgery. Now I am nervous for some reason they will deny it even though they approved it once.

    Thanks for letting me vent.
